Anticipates the co-existence of various generations of TV formats, and refers to the availability of flat displays, low cost HDTV integrated circuits and the need for displaying sport and entertainment programs to large audiences. The author also refers to high definition applications other than television. The survey mentions user configurable multimedia terminals, and reproduces a HD display carrying four separate programs simultaneously. A hardware implementation of the Eureka-standard data reduction codec is described. The algorithm employed is an adaptive intrafield/intraframe discrete cosine transform with adaptive quantisation and variable-length coding. Interframe editing, multiple copying and rapid search are guaranteed by the special codec architecture.

Discusses magnetic tape recording for HDTV studios and describes DCT (discrete cosine transform) codecs for digital video recording. Block diagrams of data reduction systems are presented, and the use of spectral analysis ahead of variable length coding is described. Advantages are suggested over normal PCM and results of multiple copying are reported, showing both subjective tests and chromakey tests. Data compression by a factor of 2 to 3 yields acceptable quality.

Rapid camera movements caused by pictures filling the whole screen in HDTV can cause problems for quick cuts and are a cause of viewer strain. It would therefore appear useful to have an automatic process for measuring this movement. The values could be regarded as indicators for camera movement during cutting, etc. This article suggests an algorithm for a simple and quick automatic method of estimating the subjective total movement content in HDTV sequences. The results correlate well with the subjective perception of viewers.

High definition television is less stressful to the viewer, but 3-dimensional television is even better. The problems of point-to-point video conferences are discussed; with present-day equipment it is difficult for all members of one team to be able to see all members of the other. Multi-point video conferences are possible under certain conditions. There are still further possibilities of stress reduction.

Describes a test rig for HDTV, to investigate various television broadcast standards, such as Linequincunx and subsampling. Attention is paid to signal processing in the TV transmitter and a transmitter block diagram is presented. Proposals are also made for a digital TV receiver and 'operating windows' for filter design are shown, based either on intermediate lines or on 'progressive' operation. A functional simulation system for TV systems was constructed, in which the various subunits were connected by Ethernet, with availability of several Micro-Vax computers. Examples of TV picture sequences with various noise reduction algorithms are reproduced. Luminance and chrominance processing are described in detail.

A coding procedure is described by means of which the data rate of a HDTV-line interlace signal of about 1 Gbit/s can be reduced to less than 140 Mbit/s without visionally perceptible impairment of the picture quality and transmitted via a broadband digital channel of the future B-ISDN. Thereby the picture is dissected in a motion-controlled manner and subscanned three-dimensionally.

Still more than one open question is hidden behind handy formulations like 'telepresence' and 'HDTV-production-grammar'. By means of human factors experiments carried out in the frame of a research project at Heinrich-Hertz-Institut Berlin, the author investigated in more detail the special characteristic features which distinguish the subjective HDTV viewing experience and under what conditions the desired effects reach their optimum. In this field sound results can only be expected on a basis of clear-cut working models of the combined action of the many potential influencing factors. As a result of preliminary studies two concepts of telepresence are up for discussion. They not only differ with regard to the predicted subjective HDTV-experience but also to the consequences for film making and editing.

HDTV cameras show less signal-to-noise ratio than common TV studio cameras because of the high bandwidth of HDTV signals. It is necessary to reduce the noise in a high quality HDTV system. A new noise reduction method was developed at the Heinrich-Hertz-Institut Berlin. This noise reduction works in motionless and motion parts of the picture without subjective visible degradations. The conversion of this motion-adaptive algorithm for noise reduction into a hardware structure and the simulations of this structure are described. The development of the hardware structure took available integrated circuits into consideration.
