Salivary gland carcinomas are a rare and heterogeneous group of malignant tumors, accounting for 3-6% of all malignant tumors in the head and neck region. The 1-, 3- and 5-year survival rates are 83%, 69% and 63% respectively. Due to new molecular pathological and genetic findings, new entities are constantly being defined as part of the recurring WHO classification of salivary gland carcinomas, so that the incidence rates of the entities are subject to constant change. The only certain risk factor for the development of salivary gland carcinomas is ionizing radiation. In addition, large tumors, cervical lymph node involvement and perineural sheath involvement significantly worsen the prognosis. Today, molecular pathology is coming to the fore, with which potential targets have been identified that can offer prognosis-improving treatment options, particularly in recurrent or distant metastatic stages. Background: Lip, oral cavity, and pharynx cancers (ICD-10: C00-C14) describe a heterogeneous group of tumors with strong variations in incidence, mortality, and survival by entity., Objectives: This work provides a detailed overview of epidemiologic measures for these tumor entities, taking into account heterogeneity in age, sex, location, and stage., Material and Methods: Incidence and mortality data for Germany for the years 1999-2016 were extracted from the interactive database of the Center for Cancer Registry Data (ZfKD). Age and stage distributions and five-year relative survival were calculated on the pooled ZfKD data set (diagnosis years 1999-2017)., Results: In 2016, overall incidence and mortality for all entities were 17.6 and 7.0 per 100,000 men and 6.5 and 1.8 per 100,000 women, respectively. The five-year relative survival in 2015-2017 was 53 and 63%, respectively. There were marked differences in survival as well as age and stage distributions between entities. Trend analyses showed an increase in age at diagnosis, particularly in male patients, and no change in stage distributions. However, five-year relative survival increased from 45% (men) and 59% (women) in 1999-2002 to 52% and 63% in 2013-2017., Conclusion: The marked heterogeneity of the studied tumors highlights the need to differentiate the analysis by sex and entity for meaningful interpretation of epidemiologic metrics. Background: Infectious diseases continue to play an important role for disease perception, health-economic considerations and public health in Germany. In recent years, infectious diseases have been linked to the development of non-communicable diseases. Analyses of the German National Cohort (GNC) may provide deeper insights into this issue and pave the way for new targeted approaches in disease prevention., Objectives: The aim was to describe the tools used to assess infectious diseases and to present initial data on infectious disease frequencies, as well as to relate the GNC assessment tools to data collection methods in other studies in Germany., Methods: As part of the baseline examination, questions regarding infectious diseases were administered using both an interview and a self-administered touchscreen questionnaire. Data from the initial 101,787 GNC participants were analysed., Results: In the interview, 0.2% (HIV/AIDS) to 8.6% (shingles) of respondents reported ever having a medical diagnosis of shingles, postherpetic neuralgia (in cases where shingles was reported), hepatitis B/C, HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis or sepsis if treated in hospital. In the questionnaire, 12% (cystitis) to 81% (upper respiratory tract infections) of respondents reported having experienced at least one occurrence of upper or lower respiratory tract infections, gastrointestinal infections, cystitis or fever within the past 12 months., Outlook: The cross-sectional analyses of data and tools presented here - for example on determinants of susceptibility to self-reported infections - can be anticipated from the year 2021 onward. Beyond that, more extensive research into infectious disease epidemiology will follow, particularly once analyses of GNC biological materials have been performed.
