This article reports on a debate among historians about the role that animals played during the time of German imperialism. The author discusses several topics, such as how exotic animals and plants drew Europeans to foreign countries, how animals such as sheep and cows carried contagious diseases across the borders of South American and African countries during the colonial period, as well as how slaughtering large quantities of animals in African countries during the 1900s had an ecological impact on the continent. Other topics mentioned include the effects of European hunters in African countries, the effects of the ivory trade, and the violent behavior of the German imperialists in colonial countries.
