Objectives: Obtaining competency in medical skills such as interpretation of electrocardiograms (ECGs) requires repeated practice and feedback. Structured repeated practice and feedback for ECGs is likely not provided to most medical students, so skill development is dependent on opportunistic training during clinical rotations. Our aim was to describe: Methods: First year medical students from two medical schools were provided with online rhythm strip practice cases. Diagnostic accuracy was measured throughout practice, and students were provided feedback for every case they completed. Total cases practiced and time spent practicing were correlated with their performance during practice and on an exam.Results: 314 of 384 (82%) students consented. The mean number of ECGs each student practiced was 59 (range 0-280), representing 18,466 total instances of deliberate practice. A method for the preparation of squalene ligand chemically bonded to silica gel is described. The chromatographic properties of the material for column liquid chromatography were examined by use of polyaromatics and alkylbenzenes. Owing to the existence of a Π - Π-interaction between squalene ligand and solute, the retention mechanism and the elution order for some solutes on this column was found to differ from those obtained on a RP-18 column. A method is described for the preparation of a safrole chemically bonded phase to silica gel. Its structure on silica has been investigated by FTIR, solid state FT-CNMR andSiNMR spectra. The safrole phase has strong π-donor ligands on the silica surface so that the separation of nitroaromatic compounds can be demonstrated as a donor-acceptor complex-chromatographic separation in high-pressure liquid chromatography. A comparison of retentions on the safrole phase, 3-phenylpropylmethylsilyl phase and RP-18 is also described. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A nosocomial infection in adults due to rotavirus is described. The identity of the infecting rotavirus strains was demonstrated by genomic dsRNA electrophoresis. At an interval of 19 days another patient in the same hospital developed a pararotavirus infection. Pararotaviruses or rotavirus-like agents are antigenetically distinct from rotaviruses and thus cannot be detected at present by the available antibody mediated antigen detection systems. The current prevalence of pararotavirus infections in adults is unknown in Switzerland. The question whether there is a relationship between the small nosocomial rotavirus epidemic and the sporadic pararotavirus infection remains speculative. We also performed microbiological workups of 394 fecal samples from outpatients with diarrhoea. During the study period from January to April 1984 rotaviruses were the third most frequent aetiological agent, after salmonella and campylobacter, in acute adult gastroenteritis. Selecting the bacteriologically negative fecal samples with a watery and non-bloody aspect, rotaviruses were found in 30%.
