Abstract

This article provides a systematic review of the arguments put forward in favour of and against the implementation of the Swiss popular initiative in 1891. From parts of the dominating Liberal Party (Freisinnige), the new popular right was met with stiff opposition, while Catholic-Conservatives and groups such as the labour association Grütliverein promoted the popular initiative. Focussing on these three protagonists and drawing on sources that scholars have not paid sufficient attention to, the article analyses the advantages and disadvantages these political actors saw in the new popular right. The paper systemizes their arguments and demonstrates that by opposing the implementation of the Swiss popular initiative, the Liberal Party was mainly trying to maintain its own power, whereas Catholic-Conservatives and the Grütliverein were hoping to expand their influence. Abstract

Is it possible that public land allocation by the government might be a mechanism to reward voters and, eventually, increase electoral support? The literature suggests that governments use distributive mechanisms to obtain electoral revenues. To analyze this, we assessed the relation between land allocation and elections between 1930 and 1946, when the Liberal Party was consolidated as the main electoral force. We implemented an Ordinary Least Squares model for more than 600 municipalities and the results show that public land allocation did favor the liberal municipalities, although it is not associated with the electoral results of the Liberal Party in the 1946 elections. Abstract

Die Radikal-Demokratische Partei RDP muß als ein gescheiterter Versuch einer liberalen Parteigründung in der Weimarer Zeit angesehen werden. Ihre Wahlbeteiligung bei der hessischen Landtagswahl 1931 - wo sie nicht einen einzigen Parlamentssitz erringen konnte - wird in der vorliegenden Arbeit näher untersucht. Die Analyse der Ergebnisse in den einzelnen Wahlkreisen zeigt vor allem, daß die Radikaldemokraten mit anderen Parteien - insbesondere der Deutschen Staatspartei - um die gleiche Wählerschaft konkurrierten und angesichts der nationalsozialistischen Wahlerfolge eine Bündelung der republikanischen Kräfte den Wählern erfolgversprechender schienen als die Unterstützung einer politischen Absplitterung, wie sie die RDP darstellte., In Weimar Germany various discussions and attempts were started to build up a democratic-liberal mass party. In 1930 the German State Party was constituted by former Democrats (DDP) and the Young German Order. The new party irritated several sections and provincial branches of the DDP and caused disaffection. Some critics founded the Independent Democratic League and subsequently the Radical Democratic Party (Radikal-Demokratische Partei). In November 1931 this party ran for election the first time in Hesse-Darmstadt. The outcome was disappointing. The party failed and did not gain a seat.
