ddc:570 - Abstract
In contrast to plant feeding thrips species, Suocerathrips linguis lives on succulent Sansevieria leaves and feeds on fungi which grow on the surface of the leaves. The digestive system consists of a straight tube and differs from all terebrantian species in having not a mid gut loop with three histologically different parts. The hind gut bears five rectal glands, a feature which has only been described for the two small families Melanthripidae and Aeolothripidae.

ddc:570 - Abstract
Defensive secretions of 30% of the investigated thrips species consist of mixtures of long chained saturated and unsaturated aliphatic esters of acetic and butyric acids, sometimes dissolved in alkanes. The mixtures can provide a long-lasting liquid surface coating with a very low vapour pressure and are used to make potential predators with olfactory sense “blind”. There are many ways to get lower volatility, longer durability, and more persistence of surface wetting. For each solution to make an optimal mixture one or more thrips species were found to use it. In one species highly volatile iridoids are acting as allomones additionally.

ddc:590 - Abstract
These waxy masses, measuring up to 10mm in diameter, are sometimes abundant in eastern Australia on the stems of the host plant (Kunzea ericoides), and the wax is of interest biologically for two reasons. First, unlike many coccid species that secrete waxy coverings, ants do not attend C. banksiae despite often walking near them on the plant stems. Second, a particular species of thrips, Teuchothrips fuscipennis (Moulton) (Phlaeothripidae) breeds beneath the waxy mass, and the larvae and adults move quickly and freely between the wax filaments without adhering in any way. The wax surface is the subject of current investigations, for which this report on taylor-made triglycerides provides a base.

ddc:570 - Abstract
A new multivariate Lucid-Key “Pest thrips of the world” is available. The CD-ROM includes a visual and molecular online-identification system based on restriction fragment length polymorphism of the ITS1 and ITS2 region. A further addition is an information database of pest thrips. The visual system is programmed with LucID 2.1 developer kit. The online-identification is based on a phpdatabase, which contains DNA-products and fragment lengths after the use of 4 primer pairs and 5 restriction enzymes.

ddc:570 - Abstract
Several thrips species were tested for the presence of parthenogenesis-inducing bacteria of the genus Wolbachia using primers amplifying either the 16S rDNA gene or the ftsZ gene. Tested species show either arrhenotoky (Frankliniella occidentalis, Echinothrips americanus, Gynaikothrips ficorum, Suocerathrips linguis) or thelytoky (Hercinothrips femoralis, Parthenothrips dracaenae). In contrast, Thrips tabaci reproduces by arrhenotoky in some areas and by thelytoky in others. The thelytokous thrips species H. femoralis and P. dracaenae possess Wolbachia, and the presence of the bacterium in H. femoralis was shown to cause thelytokous reproduction since male offspring could be generated by treating females with antibiotics. Males copulated with females and sperm was found in the spermathecae of females. The arrhenotokous species E. americanus, G. ficorum, and S. linguis also have Wolbachia, but the bacterium was not detected in F. occidentalis and T. tabaci.

ddc:590 - Abstract
Thrips exhibit a wide range of biology. Larvae and adult stages feed on the cells of angiosperms and gymnosperms, with a few on ferns and mosses and others predatory on small arthropods, but with many feeding only on fungal hyphae or spores. All larvae and adults of these species have unique asymmetric mouthparts with only the left mandible, although development of paired mandibular appendages occurs twice during ontogeny – in the embryonic and the metamorphotic stages. Numerous cells of the right mandible shrink, their nuclei become pycnotic and their cytoplasm gets brighter just before katatrepsis or pupal phase. These cells then die due to programmed cell death.
