BROILER chickens , *IMMUNE response , *IMMUNE system , *DIETARY supplements , *POULTRY , *AFLATOXINS , *CHICKEN diseases - Abstract
A new study shows that supplementing poultry feed with yeast cells can improve the immune response of broiler chickens contaminated with aflatoxin. The yeast cells have a positive effect on the immune system and increase resistance to infections. The study shows that supplementation improves the innate and acquired immune response of the chickens, resulting in higher antibody concentrations after vaccinations. This could help reduce the negative effects of aflatoxin contamination and improve the health and productivity of poultry. [Extracted from the article]

ANIMAL welfare , *ANIMAL breeds , *TURNOVER frequency (Catalysis) , *CONSUMPTION (Economics) , *REGIONAL development , *ANIMAL breeding - Abstract
Animal breeding is an essential component of sustainable land-use systems with livestock. Therefore, it has to contribute its share to the solution of problems and conflicts in the areas of animal welfare, environmental impacts, land-use change and feed-food competition. An important lever is the reduction of the number of livestock and the turnover rates. This will give opportunities to keep the remaining animals in more open husbandry systems. Further efficiency improvements are necessary, but Jevons’ Paradox has until today caused productivity improvement to be used to increase production instead of saving resources. Therefore, stronger regulations will be required to control the development of regional concentrations in line with consumer demands. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract

Highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) poses an important threat to poultry farming and the whole value chain. Since biosecurity is a major strategy to reduce the risk of HPAI virus introduction into farms and poultry flocks, a self-assessment tool for farmers concerning their farm-specific biosecurity management was developed. It is based on a questionnaire referring to risk factors retrieved from the literature or elaborated by experts, respectively. The risk factors are related to farm-, biosecurity- and animal health-management. Their epidemiological relevance is expressed through weights that were determined by an expert panel in a two-stage Delphi approach. The overall risk of a farm is estimated as the complementary to the percentage compliance with the measures assuring a maximum biosecurity as represented by the compiled questions and their respective weights. The tool is offered as a free of charge, open-access web - based tool, the so-called AI-Risikoampel (AI-Risk Traffic Light), an online anonymous risk-check, which does not only allow to elicit farm-specific optimization potentials concerning biosecurity, but also generates a farm-specific to-do list with tasks ranked according to relevance. Biosecurity gaps may thus be closed by the farmer, possibly also in cooperation with a veterinarian or consultant. The to-date experience concerning the acceptance of the tool and the user statistics are presented.

LIVESTOCK , *DAIRY cattle , *ANIMAL nutrition , *POULTRY , *CATTLE , *ANIMAL culture , *SWINE farms , *SWINE , *SERVICE animals - Abstract
The downward trend in animal stocks in Germany and in the production of compound feed seems to be slowing down. The pig segment is particularly affected, while the cattle and poultry segments are experiencing slight growth. In the past three years, 13 percent of German pig farmers have already given up. The situation is similar for poultry and cattle farmers, especially in the dairy cattle segment. It remains to be seen whether the support program for the conversion of animal husbandry can provide timely assistance to the remaining operators. Aldi & Co are already increasing their requirements for meat production, which makes efficient and sustainable animal nutrition, as well as new scientific findings in this area, increasingly important. HENS , *FEATHERS , *ANIMAL welfare , *POULTRY , *SKIN inflammation , *INFRARED cameras - Abstract
Image-based technologies are increasingly being used successfully for process monitoring, for example in the field of harvesting technology or during slaughter for assessment of foot pad dermatitis in poultry. The principle is based on the planimetric detection of areas that are set in relation to each other. In this study, this procedure was used for the detection of plumage damage in laying hens. Camera systems were used for the detection of plumage damage based on near-infrared NIR, visual VIS and ultraviolet UV technology. The ability to differentiate between intact and damaged plumage areas was examined. The best results were achieved with near-infrared-technology (600-1100 nm). The additive 3D technology enables the system to differentiate between hen and background. The system calculates the part of damaged surface. At the end of this project phase a prototype was developed, which shows promising first results regarding the detection of plumage damage in brown hens. However, in order to achieve practical maturity, further development is needed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The article discusses the importance of zinc as an essential trace element for poultry. It is pointed out that a zinc deficiency can lead to symptoms of deficiency, and therefore zinc is added to feed. The maximum amounts of zinc allowed in the EU are mentioned, and it is emphasized that over-supply should be avoided. An innovative protected zinc source (MiaTrace Zn) was tested in male broilers, and positive effects on body weight, feed intake, and bone quality were observed. The present study by TH Bingen examines performance data and bone quality as part of an experiment. [Extracted from the article]

The industrial compound feed production in the EU-27 will decrease by almost 2.4 million tons in 2023. The EU compound feed production is estimated to be a total of 144.3 million tons, which represents a decrease of 2% compared to 2022. The pig feed sector was the most affected, while the production of poultry compound feed has slightly increased. The production of feed for cattle will also decrease. The outlook for the demand for compound feed in 2024 is uncertain, as factors such as animal diseases, economic uncertainty, and environmental policies influence local production. The compound feed production in the EU-27 has decreased by 2 percent in 2023 compared to the previous year. The decline is particularly strong in the pig feed sector with a decrease of 5.2 percent. Germany has seen a decrease in compound feed production for pigs by over 7 percent, which is accompanied by a reduction in livestock numbers. The compound feed production for cattle is also continuing to decline. However, there is a slight increase in the poultry sector and in smaller segments, which cannot compensate for the loss in 2022. In the context of mismanagement of natural resources going with an increasing consumption of protein from animal origin through the world population, one major challenge for the future in animal nutrition is the improvement of its efficiency and hence sustainability. Up to now, a broad range of methods like feed additives or technological treatments have been available to improve the efficiency or the production of pig-derived and poultry-derived food and hence the sustainability in pig and poultry nutrition. Nevertheless, the exact knowledge of the mode of action of these tools is a prerequisite for their successful application. Furthermore, information concerning their impact on the nutrient availability of the different feedstuffs is of great importance, in order to formulate diets that cover the animals’ requirements. Diets covering the animals’ performance level ovoid undersupplies, which can lead to health problems on the on hand, on the other hand the emissions of nitrogen are kept as low as possible.

Introduction: The potential association between biocide and antibiotic resistance in Salmonella (S.) infantis raises concerns. In recent years, there has been an increased reporting of infections caused by the serovar S. infantis, which carries a megaplasmid called "Plasmid of Emerging S. infantis (pESI)", particularly associated with poultry meat and broiler flocks. According to veterinarians, the spread of antibiotic resistance genes occurs more frequently through horizontal rather than vertical transmission. This raises the question of whether the biocide Benzalkonium chloride, commonly used in livestock facilities, could contribute to the horizontal dissemination of antibiotic resistance genes. Methods: This study aimed to determine the minimum inhibitory concentration of Benzalkonium chloride (50 %) against Escherichia coli (recipient) and S. infantis (donor) strains carrying the pESI plasmid. The MIC values were determined using the microdilution method. Subsequently, a conjugation assay was performed with and without exposure to the biocide at a concentration of 0.125 µg/ml to investigate the impact of biocides on the enhancement of horizontal gene transfer, specifically the conjugation of multiresistant S. infantis. The methodology involved plating diluted samples onto selective and non-selective agar plates. Confirmation of transconjugants was achieved using Matrix-assisted Laser Desorption/Ionisation-Time-of-Flight Mass Spectrometry (MALDI-TOFS-MS) and MacConkey agar. The study was conducted with five technical replicates, each consisting of five replicates. Results: Due to unanticipated challenges, it was not feasible to examine whether there existed a statistically significant difference in conjugation frequency between samples with and without exposure to the biocide. The employed methodologies, such as MALDI-TOFSMS and MacConkey agar, exhibited limitations and potential instances of misidentification. Furthermore, an observed phenomenon of adverse effects associated with the use of counterselective agents (specifically Nalidixic acid in conjunction with sodium azide) was noted. Lastly, confirmatory analyses utilizing MacConkey agar supplemented with Nalidixic acid indicated a probable absence of transconjugants. Conclusion: Due to the encountered issues, no further conclusions could be drawn regarding an increased horizontal gene transfer of multiresistant S. infantis through the use of Benzalkonium chloride at a concentration of 0.125 µg/ml. The planned statistical analysis was not feasible. Nevertheless, significant progress has been made in the development of the method and the design of suitable controls. Additionally, a phenomenon of the negative effect of the combined use of Nalidixic acid and NaN3 as counterselective agents has been identified, which is of great importance for such studies. However, further refinement of the conjugation assay method is required to investigate the biozidal effect of Benzalkonium chloride on the increase of horizontal gene transfer, particularly in the case of multiresistant S. infantis.

Over the past decades, great efforts in poultry management have led to a tremendous uplift in the productivity of poultry production. This progress, coupled with the intensification of production, has created the potential for diseases in birds as their energy is fully oriented towards productivity but not to resistance. In order to prevent or treat the diseases, biosecurity measures and vaccination are widely applied; nevertheless, medication is still widely practiced worldwide. Information on influencing factors and use of veterinary medicinal products in poultry industry as well as data on detection of residues in poultry products were collected from various sources. The data obtained were analyzed and ranked to represent a likelihood of occurrence of substances to be monitored in poultry and products thereof.
