The site of Ringelstein castle ruins in Büren-Harth (Paderborn district) has been undergoing transformation for some years. During the work parts of walls are constantly being exposed and stabilised. We do not yet know when the castle was built, but the first authoritative mention of it was in 1399. For generations the site belonged to one or more branches of the noble families of Büren. It had probably been falling into decay since the 17th/18th centuries and had been abandoned at the latest by the secularisation period. Various structures exist on the ca 75x60-metre site of the inner bailey; the site of the outer bailey has been covered by modern buildings. The promontory was closed off by a large rectangular tower to the north-east. The plateau of the inner bailey was surrounded by a curtain wall with an embankment and ditch. More buildings were added at a later stage; for example, a building with two cellars to the east and a further one with four supporting pillars to the south. Shortly after 1900 the industrialist Kleine constructed a park with a folly on the remains of the walls, at that time not yet exposed. Parts of this unusual structure remain to the present day.
