The article details the frequent challenges faced in arc welding, particularly the unexpected deterioration in weld quality that can occur close to delivery deadlines. It examines the phenomenon of "blow effect," which can divert the arc due to magnetic fields, leading to significant weld defects. It highlights how issues like bonding errors can arise from various factors including the skill of the welder, welding position, and parameters such as melt performance and welding speed.

Social Studies course is one of the basic courses that prepare students for social life. Change and development have become important in science and technology in the present time. Social Studies course has found its place in the development and change in science and technology. Developments in science and technology are given in Social Studies course, considering the basic competences in science and technology. The aim of this research is to reveal the process of activities related to the basic competence area of social studies course regarding science and technology and to determine the views of students and teachers regarding this process. The research was designed in action research pattern which is one of the qualitative research methods. The research was conducted in the first and second semesters of 2022-2023 academic year. The participants of the research are 6th grade students and their social studies teacher. The data of the research, observation form, teacher and student diaries, student products, semi-structured interview forms were gathered via video recordings of the researcher in the process. Data analysis of the research was conducted using descriptive analysis method. In the research it was concluded that the activities conducted regarding basic competence in science and technology in social studies course entertained the students during the course, the course was better comprehended and the subjects were learned easily. In addition, it was concluded that the activities related to the basic competence in science and technology in Social Studies course improved students' ability to conduct research using scientific research process, and realized the importance of the scientific ethics concept, respect for labor and citing references. Considering the results of the research, recommendations for practitioners and researchers were made.

This practice report focuses on the integration of virtual exchange (VE) with mobileassisted language learning (MALL), where learners act as ethnographers within the context of language education. This VE model harnesses mobile technology capabilities to exchange personal and immersive cultural insights through asynchronous video content using Flip.com. The model consists of three integrated sections: Preparation, Intercultural Exchange, and Reflection. This report covers a pilot implementation of the mobile-enhanced VE model to evaluate the outcomes on Intercultural Communicative Competence (ICC). The project lasted eight weeks, covering various topics, such as greetings, food, and education. Participants were L2 learners of Spanish in the United States and L1 Spanish speakers in Spain. Outcomes were evaluated through a survey where students in the United States self-assessed their perceived ICC gains. This survey, grounded in Byram’s (2009) ICC model, measured changes in students’ attitudes, knowledge, skills of interpreting and relating, skills of interaction, and critical cultural awareness. Students reported substantial improvements in all areas of ICC, highlighting enhanced engagement and understanding of the target culture facilitated by the mobileenhanced VE model. This report provides insights for the incorporation of mobile technology for VE projects in L2 settings, emphasizing its role in expanding global interconnectedness and deepening intercultural learning among learners by offering a more dynamic, authentic, and immersive learning experience.

This practice report investigates the role of humor in enhancing cross-cultural learning and group cohesion in virtual education settings. Most collaborative international learning training focuses on structuring content, co-teaching, and managing coursework for specific outcomes (Rubin & Guth, 2015). Beyond including time for icebreakers for students to become acclimated with each other, often much of the rest of the experience emphasizes task completion; this serious focus may contribute to discomfort and reduced engagement among diverse students. After witnessing this our first year working together in a collaborative online international learning experience connecting North American students with those from Muslim-majority countries, we explored how modeling and creating opportunities for shared laughter in synchronous group exercises might better promote a relaxed and engaging learning environment. Our findings, derived from qualitative feedback and quantitative surveys, demonstrate that humor enhances group cohesion and cultural exploration. Students reported increased comfort, enjoyment, and willingness to engage and humor-driven activities consistently rated as the most impactful and enjoyable aspects of the course.

This paper reports on the implementation of intergenerational service-learning (SL) through virtual exchange (VE) across a German as a foreign language program at a private research institution on the East Coast in the U.S. The S-L integration started during the pandemic in intermediate courses as an outreach effort to Germanspeaking older adults in Germany and in the U.S. and has become a cornerstone of the German Program. Participants include intermediate and advanced German learners, two non-profit volunteer organizations in Germany that focus on improving the living conditions of older adults in society, one local U.S. community partner, and German heritage speakers in the U.S. Since Spring 2021, students have engaged with older adults in different formats (tandem, whole-group, a mix of both) via technology tools (landlines, Zoom, WhatsApp, Facetime). The Program is rooted in three experiential pedagogical approaches and frameworks, namely VE, S-L, and Intercultural Citizenship Education, which are driven by principles of reciprocity and reflection. The overall programmatic objective is to contribute to Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging (DEIB) goals (community engagement, partnership formation) set forth in the institution’s strategic plan. Course learning outcomes include fostering intergenerational, intercultural, and language learning and raising students’ awareness towards challenges older adults may face. On the level of language program development, the Program provides opportunities for instructor-instructor collaborations, instructor-student collaborations, and communityengaged research.

Francis Bacon says knowledge is power. The creation of knowledge and its dissemina-tion largely depends on the creation of literary works. The great works of Shakespeare, da Vinci, Homer, Picasso, Milton, Tagore etc. have been a treasure trove of mankind. Human beings have enjoyed the work, been inspired by the work, taken joy and eternal bliss in such works. However, the creation of knowledge is dependent on pre-existing knowledge. Creators create a work which requires hard work, imagi-nation, creativity and which is incentivised by recognition of their work. The legal order of a couth society affords protection to such a work by copyright law & fair use. Fair use allows a person to use a work by duly acknowledging and referencing the work. Issue of plagiarism and abuse of fair use was aggravated by human greed. The economic implication of copyright infringement aggravated the whole issue. Referencing turned into war. The Bluebook, the Maroonbook, the ALWD, the APA and OSCOLA citation styles engaged in some kind of a war. Reference management systems like Zotero, Endnote, Mendeley etc. just fanned the flame. Disruptive and generative artificial intelligence has created a serious challenge to academic research. In this paper, the author attempts to delve into the inter-linkage of academic writing, research, citation, copyright, referencing mechanism and plagiarism in contempo-rary society, and the aftermath of it. Presented in this paper are findings from a research project exploring policies and pedagogies for collaborative online international learning (COIL) in the context of Japanese higher education. Our study comprised a qualitative investigation of a government-funded COIL project, in which 13 Japanese universities were awarded funding from 2018 to 2023 to establish and implement COIL programs with international partner universities primarily in the United States. Through our study we aimed to gain an understanding of the perceived opportunities and challenges of COIL as a policy idea for internationalization and as a pedagogy for internationalization of curricula (IoC) in the Japanese context. To achieve this aim, our research design entailed a comprehensive document analysis and 12 semi-structured interviews with educators involved with the funded COIL programs at eight different Japanese universities. Findings revealed that various actors both enabled and blocked COIL as a form of IoC, and that COIL itself served in many contexts as a mechanism that shaped IoC at institutional and personal levels more broadly, beyond the confines of the respective COIL programs. We argue that COIL offers a viable means to contribute to an inclusive and collaborative internationalized curriculum in Japanese universities, given adequate institutional support and faculty buy-in.

Previous research focusing on e-tandem virtual exchanges where learners practice each other’s languages has examined mainly aspects related to form-focused interaction, linguistic development, and intercultural competence (see Akiyama & Cunningham, 2018, for an overview). The present paper examines learners’ introspective data about the benefits they obtained from participating in a Spain-Canada e-tandem virtual exchange. Particularly, the participants’ alternating roles as language learners and language experts and their intercultural understanding were examined to provide insights into their evaluation of the experience of taking part in the exchange. Introspective data was collected on how this exchange helped learners theorize about language learning and teaching and about their intercultural understanding. Learners highlighted that focusing on communication, having patience, and collaborating and cooperating with others were their most frequent concerns when they reflected on their role as language experts helping others practice their dominant language. The findings also indicate that learners’ perceptions about the intercultural understanding gained during the virtual exchange show appreciation of multiculturalism and a tendency to speak about one’s own culture.

Today, more than ever, effective communication, regardless of the shape it takes, is important for every company’s success. Having as a target the idea of going global, employers search for employees who know exactly how to express themselves in order to be understood efficiently and correctly, constantly ranking writing ability among the most popular skills for business graduates to possess. Nowadays, the global business image needs professionals who possess communications skills, especially writing skills since businesses want to convey their idea, a message, a concept to employees, customers, partners, contractors all over the world. We can think of a lot of reasons why writing skills are important in the business world. As communication technologies and information are having a great impact on all the aspects of the language use, written communication changes, too. The more diffused computer-mediated communications are, the more we witness a modification in the purpose of writing, the genres of written communication and the nature of the audience. For both teachers and students, writing has always been a problematic issue, due to several aspects, among which the most significant ones are: it is more time-consuming, it is not very dynamic, it is not very interactive and therefore, it is more difficult to be integrated in the structure of the course of Business English. The whole picture has changed. One of the most used platforms among students is WhatsApp, being a popular instructional learning medium. The present article is based on research using semi-structured interviews, in the qualitative phase, as an instrument for data collection, aimed to find out the students’ perspective towards the use of WhatsApp group in improving their writing ability in English. The sample of the study consists of 45 students at the Faculty of Economic Sciences, University of Oradea, first and second year of study. The author wants to research how today’s technology influences the development of writing skills in Business English students, more exactly the impact of the WhatsApp groups, in the case of the above-mentioned students. The elements discussed are the following: tone, simplicity, clarity and concision. The results show that the students feel that their writing skills have improved after a period of using WhatsApp group and benefit during the teaching and learning process. It also shows that it can develop the writing ability of the students. This result is supported by the opinions of the students who gave more good responses than bad ones. Thus, the result shows that the WhatsApp group is one of the most appreciated and appropriate learning platforms for today’s Generation Z.

In the context of globalization and in circumstances that have generated an economic competitiveness, organizations in the field of I.T. from Romania are in particularly opportune situations in terms of recruiting, selecting, retaining and developing talent. Talent effectively contributes to organizational success, which is why we are justified in saying that it can be the “lifeline” for any organization in the context of globalization. Regarding the evolution of the concept of talent management, the starting point can be found in the organizational context through the McKinsey consulting group, which later attracted the attention of academic theorists. In the desire of McKinsey consultants to emphasize the role of human resources in organizational success, the war for talent formula appeared. Recruiting, retaining and developing talent is a significant issue, which is why organizations have started investing in overcoming related issues and implementing talent management strategies. Talent management is recognized as a priority so that organizations in the field of I.T. are faced with this challenge to develop talent management systems that lead to the progress of the organization or produce its performance. Talent cannot be copied and is what creates value for the organization.What we can clearly state at this moment is the fact that talent management is a determining factor that supports the field of human resources. Success depends on the organization in the relationship with the existing human resource, in keeping, motivating and developing it according to its potential. In this research we proposed an analysis of the relationship between talent management practices and the personal and career development of the individual in organizations in the field of I.T. from Romania. Thus, the purpose of the research is to identify how employees in this field perceive their professional development within organizations. In the research methodology, I formulated the research objectives and hypotheses, described the research methods, instruments and sample. The analysis of the results was carried out with the help of the Qualtrics XM Survey platform, and the statistical analysis with the help of the SPSS program (version 22.0), by transferring the data from the Qualtrics XM Survey platform.

Interacting with target-language speakers online has become an important way for many second language students around the world to improve their skills in their target language. These types of learning interactions can take place on a wide range of online platforms, whether paid or unpaid, one-on-one or in small groups. Although research on these types of activities, often called virtual exchanges (VE), has increased, relatively little research has compared students’ experiences across different platforms. The present study compared the experiences of first and second-year university students with native speakers in in-person interactions as well as through several online services that connect language learners. Results indicate that students claimed to learn more in the in-person interactions than in the online settings. They also claimed to feel less anxiety in the in-person interactions. However, they also felt that certain online services improved their language learning in ways that were similar to the in-person interactions. In addition, each online or in-person setting offered unique advantages and disadvantages in terms of practicality and learning.

As the popularity of virtual exchange (VE) has increased worldwide in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, many higher education institutions are seeking the most efficient ways of building capacity for this practice. Using the context of VE implementations between the United States and Mexico as a case study, this research aimed to identify strategies for VE capacity-building that can be useful to institutions in a variety of contexts. The study included only instructors with experience implementing VE, the majority of whom had implemented VE multiple times, and used mixed methods data gathered via a questionnaire and focus groups. The findings identified specific examples of the types of resources that higher education institutions in the U.S. and Mexico may consider investing in, such as increased support for teaching with technology and different types of incentives for instructors’ continued VE engagement. Based on these findings, recommendations are made for strategies that universities worldwide can use to enhance the support they offer their VE instructors, including resource sharing with partner institutions and VE organizations.

Virtual exchanges through the Trans-Atlantic and Pacific Project (TAPP) allow instructors to design collaborations that engage students in global, international, and intercultural (GII) competencies, which are increasingly emphasised through the ongoing process of internationalisation of higher education. This article constitutes a practice report that describes two TAPP virtual exchanges designed by an instructor in Spain and one in the United States between master’s level translation students at a research university in Spain and 1) undergraduate students enrolled in a specialised technical writing course at a research university in the U.S. and 2) students in a graduate editing course at a regional university in the U.S. A content analysis of pre- and postlearning reports authored by the translation students demonstrates that students engaged in GII competencies such as openness, adaptability, and intercultural communication, which further reinforced the internationalisation of the curriculum.

Collaboration between technical and professional (TP) writers in English as a second language is important for successful communication. This is evident in legal documents in both English and Spanish, where accuracy and clarity are paramount. However, achieving this is challenging because law students often lack effective writing tools, and translation students may lack the required encyclopedic knowledge. The present paper describes a co-designed exchange project between U.S. students in business and law and students of legal translation at a university in Spain. This paper aims to determine potential improvements in students’ encyclopedic and conceptual knowledge of this specialized language and their translation performance after the collaboration intervention. To evaluate these aspects, three textual items were targeted: terminological, nominal and, what we call, substitutional density. Our results indicate that peer collaboration helped Spanish students acquire encyclopedic knowledge in the field and avoid repetitive terms in their translations, leading to greater textual cohesion through the use of general language, synonyms and hypernyms. Other aspects of this peer collaboration as well as follow-up approaches to consolidate the observed effects are needed.

Virtual exchange has widened internationalisation to more inclusive internationalisation at home initiatives. This study is set in a higher education context where 122 students from a public university in southwestern France took part in Sharing Perspectives Foundation’s flagship Climate Movements virtual exchange. In this context, L1 French learners of English, who majored in the hard sciences, interacted on a weekly basis with other students worldwide on the sensitive topic of climate change, marking the critical turn of virtual exchange projects (Helm, 2016; O’Dowd, 2016, 2018; Zečević & Milekić, 2022). The data (questionnaire responses, reflective journal entries and interview transcripts) were collected into textual corpora and read for repeated emergent themes through conventional content analysis (Hsieh & Shannon, 2005). The perceptions of the participants strongly suggest that Climate Movements virtual exchange is pivotal to internationalisation at home initiatives carried out in English as a second language.

The article "What an AI will never be able to do, the human will also never be able to do: Considerations on the concept of AI and its limits" discusses the definition of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and its limits. It argues that no system, including AI, can ever fully understand itself. The discussion refers to various positions in the debate on AI and concludes with the statement that what an AI can never achieve is also unattainable for humans. It highlights the benefits of this technology adoption, including significant time savings in preparation and cutting tasks, improved production flexibility, and streamlined workflow management.

En este artículo se presenta EtiqueTool (http://www.etiquetool.com), una herramienta web diseñada expresamente para el Análisis de Errores (AE) asistido por ordenador de Corpus de Aprendientes Informatizados (CAI) de español L2, cuyas funciones principales son la codificación y etiquetado de errores conforme a una taxonomía preestablecida pero altamente modificable y adaptable. EtiqueTool cuenta con funcionalidades adicionales para complementar y contrastar resultados, como estadísticos descriptivos básicos, y para obtener listados de errores a partir de búsquedas simples o combinadas conforme al repertorio de variables seleccionadas. La originalidad de la herramienta reside en (1) su sencillez, dado que el análisis se lleva a cabo en un procesador de texto y EtiqueTool codifica y gestiona los datos; (2) su practicidad, al ser una herramienta web que no requiere ningún tipo de instalación; (3) su naturaleza colaborativa, ya que facilita el trabajo colectivo en todas las etapas del AE y se pueden gestionar las mismas muestras sin generar versiones paralelas; (4) su versatilidad, que le permite adaptarse a otras taxonomías, añadir informantes y sumar varias muestras a sus perfiles, así como trabajar con distintos tipos de variantes/variables, con lo que se facilita el Análisis Contrastivo de la Interlengua (ACI) y el desarrollo de estudios longitudinales. En el apartado 1 se describen los CAI y algunos de los principales softwares de análisis textual y gestión de corpus. El apartado 2 se ocupa del AE Informatizado, sus fases, sus dificultades y los recursos informáticos disponibles. El apartado 3 se reserva a EtiqueTool: su gestación y desarrollo, sus objetivos y su diseño e interfaz, con ejemplos gráficos de cómo se ejecutan algunas de sus funciones principales. Con todo ello se pretende mostrar cómo EtiqueTool, creada por y para docentes, puede contribuir a la investigación de AE Informatizado de forma precisa, fiable y sencilla.

Dieser Artikel beschreibt Herausforderungen, Ziele und Möglichkeiten strategischer Kommunikation zum Forschungsdatenmanagement. Er zeigt, wie das Chemie-Konsortium zur Umsetzung einer Nationalen ForschungsDatenInfrastruktur NFDI4Chem arbeitet, um mit begrenzten Ressourcen möglichst effektiv den Einsatz von Forschungsdatenmanagement und den Output FAIRer Daten in der Chemie zu erhöhen. Beschrieben wird die Erstellung und Umsetzung einer Kommunikationsstrategie von der Analyse über die Planung und Implementierung bis hin zur Evaluierung.

The effective training of law students, which demystifies technology, and the creation of cost effective, fit for purpose technology solutions are crucial to democratising legal technology and levelling the playing fields between "Big Law" and the legal services available to the bulk of South African citizens. A public/private partnership between the Nelson Mandela Faculty of Law, the university's Information and Communication Technology department and a consortium of legal practitioners (including Cliffe Dekker Hofmeyr and various industry players) has piloted HiveLaw, a SharePoint-based practice management solution custom designed to fit university law clinics' dual purpose of legal service delivery and practical legal education. This pilot serves as a case study firstly to investigate how legal technology can contribute to transformative teaching and learning and transformative legal practice at university law clinics, as it exposes staff and students to the benefits of digital and online activities. Secondly, the pilot illustrates how proficiency in the use of technology such as HiveLaw aids the staff and students to adapt to digital processes while improving access to justice for indigent communities. In this way staff and students make a difference in the working world by implementing their knowledge in legal practice, which is widely known for slowly adapting to digital processes, while being exposed to experiential learning and getting in touch with the demands of modern legal practice.

El objetivo de este artículo es presentar el software GRAPE-MARS (Multimodal Analysis Research Software) (https://www.grape.uji.es/mars), un programa de código abierto y uso gratuito desarrollado por el grupo de investigación GRAPE (Group for Research on Academic and Professional English) para el análisis multimodal de vídeos, en el contexto particular de la investigación en segundas lenguas. La investigación multimodal ha avanzado mucho en los últimos años, especialmente en el análisis del discurso, aunque también se han realizado estudios relacionados con la traducción o la pragmática, entre otros. GRAPE-MARS es un programa de interfaz sencilla y usabilidad asequible que pueden utilizar tanto investigadores e investigadoras, como profesores o estudiantado y cuyo objetivo es facilitar la tarea de identificar los elementos o modos que conforman el discurso y facilitar su representación. En una época en que los géneros digitales, con una multimodalidad inherente, cada vez cobran más protagonismo, creemos que GRAPE-MARS puede ser una herramienta esencial para desgranar los elementos que los componen y contribuir a análisis multimodales más completos que ayuden en la investigación de las segundas lenguas.

Bei der Institutionalisierung des Forschungsdatenmanagements (FDM) stehen Hochschulen für angewandte Wissenschaften (HAW) vor einer Vielzahl von Herausforderungen und müssen die notwendigen Rahmenbedingungen zur Umsetzung des FDM für die Forschenden ihrer Institution schaffen. HAW besitzen einen starken Fokus auf der praxisbezogenen Lehre, wobei Forschung auch einen zunehmend höheren Stellenwert erfährt. Dementsprechend muss neben dem Ausbau der wissenschaftsunterstützenden Infrastruktur auch ein Bewusstsein für die Bedeutung von FDM in der Hochschulleitung geschaffen werden, um zu einem nachhaltigen FDM zu kommen. An der Hochschule für nachhaltige Entwicklung Eberswalde (HNEE) wurde zur strukturierten Planung der Institutionalisierung eine Strategie entlang des RISE-DE Referenzmodells erstellt und verabschiedet. Im Beitrag werden der Strategieprozess und die Rahmenbedingungen dargelegt. Dazu gehören auch die in der Landesinitiative Forschungsdatenmanagement Brandenburg (FDM-BB) bestehenden und in der Entwicklung befindlichen Angebote und Services. Diese betreffen die Bereiche Beratung, Schulung und technische Dienste und werden im Projekt durch Data Stewards abgedeckt. Für diese unterschiedlichen Formen des Data Stewardships wird eine Einordnung vorgenommen und aufgezeigt, wie Data Stewardship an der Eberswalder Hochschule zum Erstellen der Forschungsdatenstrategie mit Hilfe des RISE-DE Referenzmodells zum Einsatz kam. Hier werden insbesondere die personelle Verortung und der Aufbau einer Forschungsdaten-Governance durch den Data Steward entlang des Strategieprozesses beschrieben. Zum Abschluss zeigt der Artikel auf, wie eine kleine Hochschule durch die Zusammenarbeit im Verbund und von den Angeboten in den Bereichen Beratung, Schulung und technische Dienste profitieren und so in der Forschungsdatenstrategie höhere Ziele setzen kann.

Prozesse und Verfahren des Forschungsdatenmanagements befinden sich in der Ost-, Ostmittel- und Südosteuropaforschung im Aufbau und sind an vielen Institutionen, Universitäten und Lehrstühlen noch nicht fest institutionalisiert. Als eine Maßnahme des Community Buildings führte der Forschungsdatendienst OstData (2019-2022) eine Umfrage zur Bedarfsermittlung in den Bereichen Datenmanagement, Beratung, Publikation von Forschungsdaten und Vernetzung durch. Die Umfrage adressierte drei Zielgruppen, die in unterschiedlicher Weise mit Themen und Prozessen des Forschungsdatenmanagements in Berührung stehen: Forschende, Personen, die andere im Umgang mit Forschungsdaten beraten, und FDM-Entscheidungsträger:innen mit Leitungsfunktion. Der Beitrag präsentiert die Auswertung der Umfrageergebnisse und zeigt als eine Form der empirischen Umfeldanalyse zentrale Perspektiven für den Auf- und Ausbau des Forschungsdatenmanagements in der Osteuropaforschung auf.

The Research Data Management Organiser (RDMO) supports researchers in the creation of data management plans (DMPs). The open source software has established itself widely across Germany as the standard DMP tool. For its broader adoption, integration with other services for research data management is key. In this paper we reflect on the potential of RDMO on this issue, we explain its adaptiveness by design, its plugin architecture, and report on the first RDMO Hackathon organized in Darmstadt in Aug 2023 which focussed on the integration of RDMO via plugins. We present three extensions and plugins developed during the hackathon: 1.) a JSON-editor for RDMO data transfer and mapping, 2.) an RO-crate export plugin, 3.) a sensor database option set plugin.

The magnetic flux leakage test is a non-destructive testing method employed to assess the integrity of tendons, which are of crucial importance for the stability of the entire prestressed concrete structure. The detection of fractures in prestressing steel strands is subject to a large number of physical and geometric parameters. A significant proportion of these influencing factors have already been quantified in reductionist laboratory experiments. The overarching objective of the master's thesis was to investigate these factors in an application-oriented setup. This was achieved through a series of laboratory tests, which allowed for the variation of boundary conditions. The signals were evaluated using a standardised detection algorithm based on correlation analysis. The digitalization in structural engineering significantly amplified the importance of Structural Health Monitoring systems, especially in civil engineering and the renewable energy sector. Initially, after installation, a monitoring system needs to be adjusted. This paper presents three methods to adjust sensor offsets of tilt and acceleration in wind turbine towers. In the first method, we use an initiated 360-degree nacelle rotation and its unbalanced rotor weight-induced tower bending. In the second method, uniaxial operational data forms a database for a univariate regression. A third method uses a biaxial operational data set for a multivariate regression. The second and third approaches can be extended to any slender structure under environmental load. The presented workflow also allows for automated sensor orientation determination and fault detection due to long-term drift observation of sensor characteristics.

It is well known that an ultrasonic beam provides a maximum echo reflection when the beam impinges at right angles to the surface. To this end, some inspection standards recommend using refracted angles that provide normal incidence to a weld bevel in order to detect lack of fusion indications. However, perpendicular incidence cannot always be achieved and it is often not even possible to know the exact angle that a weld bevel was prepared. Although incident angle is an important factor in flaw detection, it is not the only factor that should be considered when preparing an ultrasonic weld inspection procedure. Civa simulations and experimental tests are used to assess the effects of angle, frequency and flaw size on the probability of detection of ideal planar flaws located on weld bevel surfaces.

Literary translation usually brings linguistic, textual, cultural, and pragmatic problems into perspective. As a knowledge-transfer process, it also demands a set of skills as the translator intends to convey, to some extent, the literary subtleties of the original. Graduate students attending a MA seminar of Translation of Literary Texts are frequently asked to undertake the process of translating a selection of excerpts of a variety of literary texts, to acknowledge difficulties and set up strategies for achieving their work. One of the most rewarding tools available to literary translators is working with the author, which is not always feasible in real-life activity and even more unlikely in Literary Translation classes. This report presents the practice of virtual exchange by describing the experience of matching Creative Writing students with students attending a Translation of Literary Texts seminar. Online collaboration gave Literary Translation students a sense of real-life experience by having the opportunity to communicate and work with the author, translating unpublished and untranslated texts. It was not only an opportunity of participating in a collaborative international project by means of virtual exchange, but also an opportunity of translating with the author.

This special issue follows our conference, which was held in October 2021 and attended by beer historians and sociologists from the U.S., Europe and Australia. By taking beer as a lens to approach questions of knowledge transfer and circulation, we seek to refine our historical understanding of the global entanglements of the beer industry. This is all the more important as to-date the majority of historical beer studies have obscured transnational connections by solely focusing on the nation-state or smaller regional units.

Changing conditions inevitably affect military structures and systems. Throughout history, military structures have constantly undergone changes due to doctrinal, organizational, strategic, and technological developments. This research aims to identify the problems experienced by armies in the digital transformation process and to discuss possible solutions to these problems. As a research method, a hybrid method has been used by applying systematic literature review and expert interviews. The unique value of this research is that it addresses practical and current problems faced by armies in the digital transformation process and offers concrete, realistic, and applicable solutions to these problems. This study has reached the conclusions that old systems had problems adapting to new technologies, digital transformation created cyber security vulnerabilities, there was a lack of infrastructure in data management, and personnel having ten years or more in education and training fields may be resistant to change. These findings will help practitioners and decision-makers in the armed forces to make predictions in situations such as transformations in the organizational structures of armies through changes in technologies during the digital transformation process, personnel employment, new skill and capacity requirements, military training systems, and decision-making processes.

The paper discusses the potential of virtual exchange (VE) to promote the development of Internationalization at Home (IaH) approaches. With that aim, the GAZUFES VE project was undertaken in the COVID-19/post-pandemic scenario between two universities in the Global South: one in Brazil and another one in Turkey. The theoretical framework informing the research is that of VE as a strategy to internationalize higher education and English teacher education. The methodology employed is qualitative, using content analysis to analyze data collected through reflection reports, interviews, journals, and observations produced by the project informants: preservice English teachers, researchers, teacher trainers and international relations office (IRO) staff in the two institutions involved in the GAZUFES project. Results of the analysis suggest that the GAZUFES project made a significant contribution to English Language Teaching (ELT) education and IaH in the contexts researched, not least by raising the awareness at the IRO offices and the two institutions about the potential of VE for IaH approaches. The implementation of the GAZUFES project was a teacher-led innovation in the two institutions involved and more work is required to institutionalize VE projects beyond individual teachers’ efforts. Results are discussed in terms of the challenges and benefits of VE for ELT education in general and IaH in particular through the inclusion of voices and perspectives of different agents in the two institutions (student teachers, researchers, teacher trainers and IRO staff) involved in the GAZUFES project.

Preparing future public health (U.S.) or health and social care (U.K.) professionals for international settings is imperative in today’s higher education landscape. Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL) is an innovative form of virtual exchange (VE) that provides students with international experience, cultural competence, and an understanding of global healthcare needs. This practice report summarizes how two universities in the U.S. and U.K. co-developed a COIL unit for their public health and health and social care students to learn about international healthcare systems. Public health faculty used SUNY COIL planning strategies and backward course design to guide the planning of the COIL unit. The learning processes and outcomes were designed to support program and campus learning outcomes that align with domain areas required by the Council on Education for Public Health. The planning process, curriculum, and technology used for the COIL unit are outlined. Evaluation of the unit included achieving student learning outcomes at the course, program, and campus levels; changes in intercultural awareness based on the Intercultural Knowledge and Competence VALUE Rubric; benefits to students, research assistants, and faculty; and alignment with the qualities of VE.

Digital inequality and digital justice are pressing issues in today's world. This work examines the socio-philosophical aspects of these problems and proposes measures to achieve digital justice. The authors draw attention to the fact that digital inequality can manifest itself in various forms, such as access to information, technology and resources, as well as opportunities to participate in the digital economy. This can lead to increased social inequalities and limited opportunities for the development of individuals and society as a whole. To achieve digital justice, the authors propose a number of measures, such as improving access to digital technologies and resources, ensuring equal opportunities to participate in the digital economy, and protecting consumer rights and data privacy. They also draw attention to the need to promote digital literacy and education so that people can make effective use of digital technologies and resources. The authors also examine digital inequality and digital justice in the context of monopoly and free speech. They point out that some companies that declare their social responsibility may use their monopolistic position in the market to limit freedom of speech and access to information. In this context, the authors suggest strengthening the role of the state in regulating the digital economy and protecting consumer rights. In conclusion, the research is a valuable contribution to the field of research on digital inequality and digital justice. It emphasizes the need to take into account the socio-philosophical dimensions of these issues and suggests measures to achieve digital justice. It also draws attention to the importance of cultural and historical sensitivity in the development of digital policies and resources.

The concept of Industry 4.0 has revolutionized the manufacturing sector by integrating advanced technologies, real-time monitoring and data analysis to improve production processes. This thesis highlights the critical role of quality control in Industry 4.0, employing IoT sensors, artificial intelligence and data analytics for early defect detection. The focus is on continuous and comprehensive inspection using Non-Destructive Testing and Evaluation (NDT&E) methods. This thesis addresses the challenge of developing methodologies aligned to NDE 4.0, employing low-cost sensors for on-line and real-time measurements. In particular, the study explores eddy current methods for thickness estimation overcoming limitations through optimization techniques. Furthermore, the application of dimensional analysis is introduced to reduce the complexity of NDT&E problems.
