Abstract

Estradiol-17beta, estradiol-benzoate, estradiol-valerianate, and estradiol-undecylate were injected intravenously and intramuscularly to postmenopausal woman and to female castrates. Equal doses were used corresponding to 20 mg of free estradiol-17beta. Estradiol-17beta, estrone, FSH and LH were measured in serum by radioimmunoassay before and after application of the hormone and the estradiol esters. Thus the depot effect of the different esters could be compared.

Abstract

In mice, the influence of valproic acid (di-n-propylacetate, DPA) on central level of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) as well as the activity of the enzymes regulating GABA metabolism, glutamate decarboxylase (GAD) and GABA-alpha-oxoglutarate aminotransferase (GABA-T) were studied. It was shown that the elevation of GABA by DPA was accompanied by an activation of GAD. GABA-T was inhibited only by toxic doses or high concentrations of DPA in vivo and in vitro, and so was GAD. DPA proved able to antagonize the biochemical alterations induced by convulsant doses of isoniazid, i.e., decreases in the level of GABA and the activity of GAD. These results point to a role of the transmitter pool of GABA regulated by GAD in the anticonvulsant effect of DPA.

Abstract

The influence of Dipropyl-Acetate (DPA, Ergenyl) on hemostasis parameters was examined in 12 patients. In 8 cases there was a prolongation of bleeding time, in 2 cases thrombocytopenia, in 6 out of 10 cases the platelet adhesiveness was pathologically reduced. We therefore recommend hemostasis-examinations--with emphasis on the thrombocytic system--in patients taking DPA.

Abstract

Ketosteroids were determined colorimetrically in samples of 24-hour urine from sows, ten days after service. Pregnancy was diagnosed by injection of the "Gravignost-swine" preparation in eight sows. Significant differences between the 17-ketosteroid excretion on non-pregnant sows were revealed by the excretion in 24-hour urine, but not by urinary concentration expressed in mg per litre. Injection of "Gravignost" had no effect on 17-ketosteroid values. In pregnant sows the urinary concentration of 17-ketosteroids was inversely proportional to daily urine volume, and there was also a significant correlation between urine volume and 17-ketosteroid excretion expressed in mg per 24 hours. The method used for determining urinary ketosteroids was sufficiently reliable and simple to be used for routine testing.
