Over recent decades in the German-speaking world, photo albums have grown in popularity as historical source material, both in the fields of cultural studies and contemporary history. To date, however, this international and interdisciplinary research field has lacked comprehensive mapping, something which this article attempts to redress by providing an overview of historical developments, current debates, and approaches. Pursuant to this, narration, materiality, use, and performativity are presented and discussed as central guiding concepts of album research. Doing so not only allows different perspectives and methodological approaches to subject matter to be taken, but also highlights the versatility and multitude of forms album usage can facilitate. The overall aim of the article is to demonstrate the historical value of photo albums in relation to practices of “meaning-making” spanning a wide range of historical and political contexts. An editorial is presented on theoretical and methodological developments in the field of interdisciplinary album research oriented towards contemporary history. Topics include visual cultural and contemporary historical source in order to explore possibilities for transdisciplinary development and interpretation; and research into photo albums as a historical source with increased interest in the materiality, objectivity and mediality with geographical spaces, societies, and political regimes.

The article discusses the history of transnational labor migration and the social conditions of foreign workers in Austria. The authors highlight that public debate and political discourses about immigration after World War II was often at least implicitly informed by the history of forced labor under the National Socialist dictatorship. Other aspects addressed include racism and xenophobia, the use of prejudicial language to describe migrant workers, and a televised political debate about immigration in Austria in 1973.

The article reports on a series of conferences on European integration and the governance of the European, held in November and December 2010 in Hungary. Topics discussed included the takeover of the presidency of the Council of the European Union by Hungary in 2011, the Eurozone crisis, and the relationship of the European Union with the non-member countries of Eastern Europe.

Straipsnyje yra nagrinėjamas pastarųjų metų ekonominės krizės poveikis asmens socialinės apsaugos garantijoms. Šiuo laikotarpiu priimti sprendimai palietė daugumą socialinės apsaugos išmokų. Tačiau dėl kai kurių išmokų priimti sprendimai buvo itin jautrūs tiek poveikiu visuomenei, tiek teisinių principų laikymosi garantijomis. Straipsnyje plačiau nagrinėjamos dviejų tipų socialinės apsaugos garantijos – socialinio draudimo pensijos ir trumpalaikės išmokos – nedarbo draudimo išmoka ir ligos pašlapa.
