- Abstract
Crucial to a successful outcome in vitreoretinal surgery is an adequate anaesthesia, both for the surgeon's work as well for the patient's safety and comfort. In this article the most frequently cited anaesthesia techniques for vitrectomy are discussed. Depth of anaesthesia, muscle relaxation, recovery behaviour, and changing times, vomiting, cough and post-operative cardiovascular stability are the main criteria for choosing the specific technique. With increasing aging and multimorbidity in the ophthalmic patient population careful balancing of the advantages and disadvantages of each technique is required and therefore sufficient communication between anaesthesiologist and surgeon is essential., (Georg Thieme Verlag KG Stuttgart, New York.)
