The floodplain of the rivers Danube, March/Morava and Thaya/Dyje in eastern Austria and western Slovakia harbours a great diversity of meadows, reed swamps and sedge-bed communities. However, the grasslands along the Danube have not been adequately addressed by any study up to now, and a transnational revision of the alluvial grasslands is completely lacking. In this third part of a series focusing on the syntaxonomy of the Pannonian grasslands of Austria, we present a detailed classification of the grassland and marsh vegetation of the Danube and March-Thaya floodplain. We compiled all available relevés from the study area belonging to the classes Phragmito-Magnocaricetea, Molinio-Arrhenatheretea and Festuco-Brometea. In total, our data set comprised 2119 relevés, of which 355 were from Slovakia. We conducted a TWINSPAN classification and, based on a provisional syntaxonomic interpretation of the clusters, assigned all relevés to classes, orders, alliances and associations using the total cover of the diagnostic species in each relevé as the assignment criterion. We identified 42 associations and five provisional communities belonging to 14 alliances. Our revision includes substantial changes to previous overviews, in particular regarding the alluvial grasslands of the March-Thaya floodplain. We merge Lathyro palustris-Gratioletum, Gratiolo-Caricetum suzae, Cnidio-Violetum pumilae, Serratulo-Plantaginetum altissimae and "Silaetum pratensis" into only two associations (Gratiolo-Caricetum suzae and Cnidio-Violetum pumilae, alliance Deschampsion), which are differentiated along the moisture gradient. The Ophioglosso-Caricetum tomentosae is revealed as a geographical vicariant of the Cnidio-Violetum pumilae, replacing the latter along the Danube. The Agropyro-Alopecuretum pratensis is newly reported for Austria. The mesic Festuca rupicola grasslands along the March/Morava (previously named "Serratulo-Festucetum commutatae") are included in the Colchico-Festucetum rupicolae (Cirsio-Brachypodion). Ranunculo bulbosi-Arrhenatheretum, Pastinaco-Arrhenatheretum, Festuco rupicolae-Brometum and Polygalo-Brachypodietum (the latter in a new subass. selaginelletosum helveticae) are confirmed as widespread grassland types in the Danube floodplain, and the Teucrio botryos-Andropogonetum (Festucion valesiacae) is split into two subassociations. Moreover, we report four grassland types dominated by Elymus repens and Calamagrostis epigejos, provisionally treated as rankless communities, which have been neglected by all previous authors. ddc:580 - Abstract
With the 3rd edition of the International Code of Phytosociological Nomenclature, a special Committee was established to faciliate and accelerate the decision of the Nomenclature Commission on submitted proposals for nomina ambigua, nomina inversa, nomina mutata, and nomina conservanda. Here we present the first report of this Committee. In the first part of the paper, a short overview of the major problems related with each of the four categories is given. In the second part, 19 proposals are discussed together with a recommendation whether the proposal should be accepted or rejected. Authors who wish to submit a proposal to the Nomenclature Commission are asked to use this report as a guideline.

ddc:580 - Abstract
The aim of the present study was to investigate the whole floristic and environmental variety of fringe vegetation on nutrient- poor sites within the biosphere reserve ‘Wienerwald’ The Wienerwald (Vienna Woods) is one of the largest areas covered with semi-natural deciduous forests in the colline to submontane belt in Central Europe. It is situated at the border between the subatlantic Central European and the Pannonian climatic region. Based on 132 newly sampled relevés a TWINSPAN classification was carried out. Correlation with environmental factors was investigated using canonical correspondence analysis (CCA). For the syntaxonomical interpretation, additional relevés from the literature were included. The alliance Trifolion medii is most widespread in the study area. Communities of the alliance Geranion sanguinei are less common and mainly restricted to the warm margins of the Wienerwald. Some problems in the syntax - onomy of both alliances are discussed.

ddc:580 - Abstract
This paper describes 11 forest remnants in the southern part of the Vienna basin. The Vienna basin is a fracture zone between the Alps in the west and the Carpathians in the east. The study area is characterised by loess-covered terraces. The forests are floristically described and syntaxonomically classified. Additional information was collected from the land survey of 1820 known as the “Franziszäischer Kataster”, in order to characterize former land use of the forests. The oak-hornbeam forests of the study area were classified as Polygonato latifolii-Carpinetum, the oak forests mainly as Euphorbio angulatae-Quercetum. Within this association, four subtypes were noted (degraded, mesic, moderately dry and dry). One relevé was classified as Lithospermo purpurocaerulei-Quercetum pubescentis. Three relevés that were highly affected by Robinia pseudacacia were classified as Balloto-Robinietum. The oak- and oak-hornbeam forests lie in an old settlement area and thus have been used for many centuries. The forest is thus present in only small fragments. There is also a problem with neophytes like Robinia and Ailanthus. These trees are a danger for the continuity and the species composition of the forest remnants.

ddc:580 - Abstract
The vegetation cover of 50 small patches of dry grassland in Eastern Austria was investigated and documented by relevés. In addition to phytosociological data, the particle size composition of the soil was determined for each relevé. All substrates are located over Tertiary and Quaternary sediments. Grasslands on rocky outcrops were not included in the present study. The following plant communities were distinguished: Polygalo majoris-Brachypodietum, Astragalo austriaci-Festucetum rupicolae, Ranunculo illyrici-Festucetum valesiacae, Poo angustifoliae-Festucetum valesiacae, Potentillo arenariae-Festucetum pseudovinae, and Fumano-Stipetum eriocaulis. Species combination, geographical distribution and soil parameters of all units are described. Finally, some problems concerning the syntaxonomy of western Pannonian dry grasslands are discussed.
