The German guidelines for airway management aim to optimize the care of patients undergoing anesthesia or intensive care. The preanesthesia evaluation is an important component for detection of anatomical and physiological indications for difficult mask ventilation and intubation. If predictors for a difficult or impossible mask ventilation and/or endotracheal intubation are present the airway should be secured while maintaining spontaneous breathing. In an unexpectedly difficult intubation, attempts to secure the airway should be limited to two with each method used. A video laryngoscope is recommended after an unsuccessful direct laryngoscopy. Therefore, a video laryngoscope should be available at every anesthesiology workspace throughout the hospital. Securing the airway should primarily be performed with a video laryngoscope in critically ill patients and patients at risk of pulmonary aspiration. Experienced personnel should perform or supervise airway management in the intensive care unit. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The latest methodology to organize students’ independent work with information and communication technology is both an opportunity and a challenge for higher education owing to its current digitalization. The following article presents an algorithm which allows teachers to prepare for and organize students’ independent work based on student foreign-language blogging. Such an algorithm might be easily used and reproduced by foreign language teachers and researchers engaged in profession-oriented foreign language training of future graduates of a technical university. It includes four procedures: from analyzing the regulatory standards and identifying the objectives and methodology of organizing students’ independent work, to forming an expert group and developing the quality-assurance criteria for this work’s further evaluation, to finding out the structure, content and levels of professional foreign language competences to be developed, as well as its information and technical support. The results of experimental work enable us to point out the effectiveness of the given algorithm in stimulating students’ growth in the competence levels, due to its focus on students’ professional development which is often a challenge to many foreign language teachers and researchers.

A red-black (RB) tree is a data structure with red and black nodes coloration. The red and black color of nodes make up the principal component for balancing a RB tree. A balanced tree has an equal number of black nodes on any simple path. But when a black leaf node is deleted, a double-black (DB) node is formed, thus, causing a reduction in black heights and the tree becomes unbalanced. Rebalancing a RB tree with a DB node is a fairly complex process. Teaching and learning the removal of DB nodes is also challenging. This paper introduces a simplified novel method which is a symbolic-algebraic arithmetic procedure for the removal of DB nodes and the rebalancing of black heights in RB trees. This simplified approach has enhanced student learning of the DB node removal in RB trees. Feedback from students showed the learnability, workability and acceptance of the symbolic-algebraic method in balancing RB trees after a delete operation.

The Model of Automated Knowledge Communication outlined in this postdoctoral thesis aims to broaden the scope of current conceptualizations of specialized communication to account for self-adapting, AI-/LLM-based machines since these are presently changing the practice of multilingual specialized communication in fundamental ways – hence affording research to adapt. The model facilitates the development of research on specialized communication specifically by integrating, firstly, new approaches toward concepts of expert knowledge and, secondly, the involvement of sophisticated machines able to act increasingly autonomously. The monograph sets out with an overview on the objects of research the model can be applied to as it incorporates approaches of cybernetics, technical sociology, and media sociology. The description of the model is followed by its validation on basis of seven case studies from which some suggestions for further research are derived.

ALGORITHMS , *INFECTION - Abstract
To date no biomarker has been identified bringing together perfect sensitivity and specificity to discriminate between inflammation and infections. Since the 1930s new markers of tissue damage and endothelial damage have been identified but which are incapable of identifying infections in every clinical setting to enable initiation of early antibiotic treatment. In this review the most important classical biomarkers and upcoming new PCR-based approaches are addressed. These markers are highlighted with respect to special clinical settings and to control the success of antibiotic treatment. The issue of discrimination between inflammation and infection is not yet solved. Based on one single biomarker it is impossible to decide whether infection is the reason for the patient's worsening condition but the combination of biomarkers or the integration of new biomarkers may be a meaningful supplement. The measurement of different biomarkers of infection or inflammation is part of the routine in critical care and will be essential in the future. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Accidents will survive the outbreak of driverless cars, but their moral implications will suffer substantial changes. The decision made today by a human in a fraction of a second will eventually be replaced by an algorithm subject to moral scrutiny. This not only raises the question of how the algorithm should work, or whether alternatives solutions are indeed comparable, but also changes the essence of the problem: from ascertaining liability to defining desired outcomes. In this paper, I first contest two possible approaches to resolving the driverless car dilemma – which I call statistical and nominal – to conclude that neither is morally sound. I then propose an alternative solution based on “time-relative equality”, or always sparing younger people. This follows from seeking (i) an egalitarian solution, that is (ii) the least intrusive – a position I defend from a possible ageist critique.

Marxist criticism considers the financial market as the utmost achievement of abstraction. It is the jewel of capitalism, which is in turn the accomplishment of metaphysics and of the Greek logos. This article argues, against this Marxist view, that the financial market should not be confused with capitalism, and even less so with the notions of algorithm and automatism. Indeed, it will show that once capitalism is augmented by the derivatives market, the financial market will no longer appear as an abstract structure, but rather as a concrete infrastructure, which presents an alternative to the foundation of the traditional schema of abstraction. It will effectively contradict abstract probability theory, which is founded on such a schema.

Educational strategies often derive from ideas of eminent founders. They convey traditional conceptions of good practice and professional identity. However, the environment changes dramatically. Megatrends such as multimorbidity, staff shortage, claims for outcome proofs, expectations of the Millennials, and also digitalization produce slow but steady efects. Yet, the question if education adequately tackles the challenges is avoided. Strategy papers show that arrangements and instruments have been adapted, but not contents.

Processing and storage of a large amount of information is one of the difficult and interesting tasks at the moment. The performance of the system as a whole depends on how well the performance and reliability of the database are implemented. One of the most difficult aspects of this issue is the handling of a database query and its efficient execution. In this paper we consider modern methods and models of query processing in databases. We offer an algorithm to service the request of users, which involves the use of parallel technologies in the exchange of information with the nodes of a distributed database and a dictionary, and also allows to increase the query execution time, which in turn will increase the speed of the system as a whole. We bring the current at the moment the technology of storing large amounts of data: distributed and parallel databases, MapReduce.

A new hybridized algorithm that combines process optimisation with response surface mapping was developed and applied in an automated continuous flow reaction. Moreover, a photochemical cascade CSTR was developed and characterised by chemical actinometry, showing photon flux density of ten times greater than previously reported in batch. The success of the algorithm was then evaluated in the aerobic oxidation of sp3 C–H bonds using benzophenone as photosensitizer in the newly developed photo reactor.

- Abstract
Background: The presence of abdominal injuries has a major impact on the mortality of severely injured patients. For injuries that require surgery, laparotomy is still the gold standard for early surgical care; however, there is increasing evidence that laparoscopy may be an alternative in the early clinical care of polytrauma patients. Objective: The present registry-based study analyzed the utilization and the outcome of laparoscopy in severely injured patients with abdominal trauma in Germany. Material and methods: A retrospective analysis of 12,447 patients retrieved from the TraumaRegister DGU® (TR-DGU) was performed. The primary inclusion criteria were an injury severity score (ISS) ≥ 9 and an abbreviated injury scale (AIS) [abdomen] ≥ 1. The included patients were grouped according to early treatment management: (1) laparoscopy, (2) laparotomy and (3) non-operative management (NOM). Finally, group-specific patient characteristics and outcome were analyzed. Results: The majority of patients were treated by NOM (52.4%, n = 6069), followed by laparotomy (50,6%, n = 6295) and laparoscopy (0.7%, n = 83). The majority of laparoscopies were performed in patients with an AIS [abdomen] ≤ 3 (86.7%). The ISS of the laparoscopy group was significantly lower compared to that of the laparotomy and NOM groups (ISS 23.4 vs. 34.5 vs. 28.2, respectively, p ≤ 0.001). The standardized mortality rate (SMR), defined as the ratio between observed and expected mortality, was lowest in the patients receiving laparoscopy followed by laparotomy and NOM (SMR 0.688 vs. 0.931 vs. 0.932, respectively, p-value = 0.2128) without achieving statistical significance. Conclusion: Despite being rarely employed the data indicate the effectiveness of laparoscopy for the early treatment of severely injured, hemodynamically stable patients with an AIS [abdomen] ≤ 3. Die Erkenntnisse tragen dazu bei, ein besseres Verständnis der Herausforderungen und Chancen der Plattformarbeit im Kontext der Geschlechtergleichstellung zu gewinnen., Platform work is becoming increasingly important as a new form of employment and offers advantages in terms of achieving a good work-life balance. However, platform steering elements such as algorithms and rating systems can also pose risks. Current research on discrimination against women in online labor markets provides evidence of possible unequal treatment. Familiar patterns of the traditional labor market in hiring and pricing are also evident on platforms. This suggests that gender stereotypes are being transferred to the platform economy. Previous research has rarely focused on the importance of platform-specific steering elements in this process. This dissertation examines the role of gender stereotypes and algorithms in hiring and pricing on one of the world's largest freelancing platforms, freelancer.com. A unique dataset is created through web scraping and processed using machine learning methods. Econometric models are used to investigate the research question, considering job-specific effects. The results indicate that gender stereotypes do not play a role in the hiring decisions on the platform. However, the ranking algorithm of the platform is of great importance. Furthermore, it can be determined that the ranking of freelancers has a different influence on the probability of being hired depending on gender: For women, the rank in a female-dominated field of task is less relevant than for men. Gender stereotypes therefore seem to have no relevance on the freelancing platform. Women are offered more gender-equitable employment. However, platform-specific elements such as the ranking algorithm pose new potential for gender discrimination. The findings contribute to a better understanding of the challenges and opportunities of platform work in the context of gender equality.
