The article describes the long-term editorial project Fraktionen im Deutschen Bundestag. 1949–2005 , an extensive collection of meeting minutes and session protocols from the parliamentary groups of the German Bundestag, which has been gradually published since 1993 in print, online, and as TEI-XML datasets in a public GitHub repository. The article addresses the significance of protocols as key sources for historical research, particularly for examining administrative structures and political decision-making processes, and emphasizes the variety of protocol types (minutes, session records, and verbatim reports), which provide insights into decision-making processes and power dynamics. The article outlines the development, current status, and future challenges of the Fraktionsprotokolle.de project, highlighting the balance between digital and print publication as well as the handling of extensive research data, including the planned ParlaBio biographical database. In an extensive outlook, the article explores experiences with the use of AI models in the editorial process, discussing both opportunities and technical as well as data protection-related challenges.

The following article takes a close look at the so-called ›Innsbrucker Fragment ULBT, Frg. B7‹. Written on the detached binding fragment are the text passages 4,10,7 -- 35 and 4,10,39 -- 67, as well as 5,3,41 -- 5,4,3 and 5,4,15 -- 35, all derived from Ovid's Tristia. A more extensive palaeographical description and dating shows that ULBT, Frg. B7 was penned around the middle of the 12th century. Therefore, the ›Innsbrucker Fragment‹ is currently the eldest known version of approximately the entire preserved text. An edition of the verses with their glosses and a listing of those passages, that have not been considered in a critical edition of the Tristia, shall deliver new insights to the Ovidian scholarship. The demand for a comprehensive overview of medieval library catalogues reaches back to the 19th century and has, over the years, sporned various individual and national undertakings, of which the German project ›Mittelalterliche Bibliothekskataloge Deutschlands und der Schweiz‹ (MBK) at the Bavarian Academy of Sciences and Humanities, begun in 1906, is the oldest still active. This paper briefly reviews the history of these efforts and outlines their different approaches up to the present day. Focusing on the long-term project MBK, the paper discusses the challenges it faces with regard to completeness, comprehensiveness, and currentness. As a solution to these problems, the project has developed an online repertorium documenting as completely as possible, for the countries of present-day Germany and Switzerland, the source material published in MBK editions and other editions as well as unedited catalogues mentioned in secondary literature or otherwise identified in finding books and catalogues. The objective of this paper is to shed light on the Hohensalzburg Fortress as depicted in a hitherto unpublished 16th century source. This record, produced during Archbishop Matthäus Lang’s tenure, bears the imprints of the Peasants’ Revolt of 1525. The document offers insights into proposals for building improvements as well as an upgrade of artillery. It also provides a list of all the people who lived and worked at the castle in 1526 as well as an inventory of food supplies and a code of conduct for the castle staff. This information allows us to gain an impression of everyday life and the provisioning of the early modern castle and to link it to current social and cultural-historical questions, which are increasingly asking about the social dimension of castles. When Poland regained independence in 1918, the different legal systems of the various partitioning states all remained in force on its territory. Drafts of uniform laws were to be drawn up by the Codification Commission established in 1919. One of its tasks was the preparation of a draft of the family and guardianship law. The sub-commission addressing this division of civil law worked until the outbreak of World War Two. The minutes of its sittings disappeared in September 1939 along with the total output of the Codification Commission. However, copies of minutes of the sittings of the sub-commission held in 1939 were found in Kazimierz Przybyłowski’s collection of books donated to the Faculty of Law and Administration of University of Silesia in Katowice. These minutes shed new light on the final phase of the codification works. Publication of these documents will enable further detailed research on the history of family law in interwar Poland. The first part of the publication focuses on minutes nos. 165–173, while following parts will include minutes nos. 183–201, and a reconstruction of the draft provisions.

The Concise Sociopolitical and Mass-Media Dictionary is an English-to-Amharic dictionary that was prepared primarily by Professor Zdeněk Poláček and digitized at the Hiob Ludolf Center for Ethiopian and Eritrean Studies (HLCEES) under the supervision of Professor Alessandro Bausi. The edition and digitization were carried out initially on Microsoft Word and then through XML using similar technology to other production work at the HLCEES. By using a lightly modified TEI Publisher application within eXist-db, this project successfully produced a 1,600-page PDF that may also be published as a book. This project note highlights the key steps taken in the process of digitizing the dictionary. It gives a succinct exploration of how TEI Publisher simplified the digitization process in comparison to Word. It also presents some of the extra revision steps that had to be taken using eXide after a dictionary entry was entered into the application. We supplement this note with figures to demonstrate these points.

Recipes in manuscripts are unstable texts, they appear in differnet manuscripts in multiple variations and were mostly handed down in anonymous, often thematically sorted collections. This article presents new methods and concepts for researching the transmission of individual recipes and recipe collections. It is using the example of art technological and cooking recipes of the Early New High German manuscript Cod. germ. 1 of the State and University Library Hamburg. In comparison to older research, the data structure is changed. The text events materialized in the manuscripts and recorded by the databases are assigned to imaginary texts in potentia. This allows a reduction of the entities and a clear visualization of the recipe transmission network as a graph.

Ralf König est à la fois l’artiste de bande dessinée le plus célèbre et sans doute le plus décrié d’Allemagne. Cet article se focalise sur la réception négative de plusieurs de ses œuvres : si certains scandales éclatent parce que les œuvres touchent le mauvais public, d’autres sont liés à des illustrations inspirées de caricatures racistes. Que ces controverses soient intentionnelles pour attirer le regard des médias ou inhérentes à son style de dessin, voire à la forme d’art, König réussit à en tirer parti pour survivre en tant qu’artiste de bande dessinée et défendre ses idéaux. Enfin, il faudra se demander si ce n’est pas aussi l’identité non-hétéronormée de l’artiste et de ses personnages qui incite les médias à déceler des provocations là où il n’y en a pas.

The subject of the study is the edition of “Suspicious” (Podejrzliwy) by Julian Ursyn Niemcewicz (Warsaw 1831). This is the late political comedy by the author of “The return of the deputy” (Powrót posła), which in artistic way registers events that are a consequence of the tsarist policy of Alexander I towards Poles after 1818. In addition to the main plot intrigue, the comedy brings a picture of extensive espionage network managed by senator Nowosilcow and his supporters. “Suspicious” was written between September 9 and November 5, 1819, but some of the scenes were added only after 1822, once the censorship blocked attempts to introduce comedy on the stage of the National Theater. It was then that the events related to the Vilnius investigation and Filaret’s process took place (these events are present in the added scenes). The basis for the edition was the first edition of the comedy published in 1831, enriched by three scenes of the first act comparing to other broadcasts. It was compared with the autograph of the work preserved in the Raczyński’s Library in Poznań (reference number 41) and a manuscript copy made for the stage and sent to the censorship in 1821.

В настоящей статье рассматривается гимнографический комплекс, посвященный митрополиту Московскому и всея Руси Филиппу, становление агиографии которому до сих пор оставляет много вопросов. В связи с этим затрагиваются вопросы, связанные с датой канонизации святителя Филиппа, временем сложения жития и составления службы, а также ее певческого воплощения. Исследователями установлено, что певческие списки службы митрополиту Филиппу появляются в середине XVII в. Достаточное количество вариантов музыкального текста службы святителю позволяет осуществить их систематизацию через выяснение точного числа реально существующих певческих редакций и их соотношения между собой. На основании наиболее ранних и репрезентативных списков службы, не переходящих границы XVIII в., были обнаружены две категории гимнографических текстов, среди которых тексты, исполняющиеся на подобен и имеющие самостоятельный напев. Основной материал статьи посвящен выявлению репертуара песнопений службы митрополиту московскому Филиппу. Анализ показал, что комплекс песнопений святителю в выбранных списках представлен в разном объеме. Их сопоставление позволило выделить пять редакций состава службы, отличающихся количеством входящих песнопений -основную, краткую, расширенную, полную, избыточную.

Medical and scientific manuscripts have been the interest of scholarly attention in recent decades and as a natural consequence, editions of unstudied material have flourished (Alonso-Almeida, 2014 or Marqués-Aguado, T. et alii, 2008, among others). This book is a Middle English edition of one of the most popular works circulating in the late medieval England, known as Circa Instans. This book presents a revised edition of the text found in CUL MS Es 1.13. ff 1r-91v, housed in the Cambridge University Library.

After a period of experimentation and prototyping, digital editions are considered a common standard and a serious, quite often even a better alternative to printed editions. In addition the TEI/XML provides a well introduced standard for mark-up of all relevant structural and semantic elements of an edition. In spite of this process of consolidation the digital edition is still accompanied by harsh critique, particularly by objecting that mark-up leaning on XML fosters a text model of an Ordered Hierarchy of Content Objects (OHCO) that does not fit all editorial problems and limits the flexibility of the editor. As a consequence many attempts have been undertaken to overcome these limits of XML, but up to now without much success. By narrowing down the perspective, however, to problems of the text model seemingly caused by XML it was often overlooked that a digital edition consists of more than a XML file. This contribution attempts to show that the critique can be dissolved when the edition is viewed not merely as a XML file, but as an ensemble of its components. In doing so it can also be shown that other than its critiques maintain a digital edition is not less stable or persistent than its printed predecessor. The seeming fluidity of digital edition disappears if it is no longer determined by its visible surface, but according to its algorithmic nature by the interplay of its components of text, structure, layout, interface and metadata.

The section named Ystoria Ethyopie in the Cronica universalis written by Galvaneus de la Flamma (d. c.1345) depends, according to the writer’s statements, on a Tractatus de mappa whose author is easily identifiable as Giovanni da Carignano (d. c.1330), who drew a famous planisphere of the Mediterranean area. The Tractatus de mappa, as quoted by Galvaneus, reports surprising pieces of news about the Ethiopia of the time and in particular on an event which has been known so far only by a later and generally disregarded source, namely the Supplementum cronicarum of Giacomo Filippo Foresti (first edition 1483): the supposed embassy sent by an imperator Ethiopie to Western Europe at the time of Pope Clement V, that would be the first diplomatic contact between these two areas in the Middle Ages. The Latin text of the Ystoria Ethyopie is edited with an annotated English translation that intends to provide a detailed critical assessment of the document. If no conclusivem evidence in favour of the existence of the embassy emerges and the depiction of Ethiopia in the Ystoria Ethyopie appears to be in several passages influenced by contemporary ideas and expectations, there is no doubt that reliable information on early-fourteenthcentury Ethiopia was directly or indirectly conveyed to Giovanni da Carignano, as we can read it resumed in Galvaneus’s Cronica universalis.

This article presents the post-mortem organization of Jan Hanč’s literary texts (1916–1963) as an open question. As a rule, the writer did not date his own works and, with the exception of three handwritten notebooks, did not put them in any order. In those cases where such information is provided within the text itself, we must understand it as an element of artistic stylization rather than evidence of documentation, or indication of the origin of the work. This article analyzes the work of the publishers of Hanč’s selected writings at the end of the 1960s, with regard to the author’s manuscripts in their material form.

Abstract In addition to the travel diaries of the American and Russian voyages, the edition humboldt digital also contains correspondence, manuscripts and notes that were created in the context of Humboldt’s research agenda. During the years 1825 and 1826 Humboldt and the botanist Carl Sigismund Kunth worked in Paris on a new edition of the Essay on the Geography of Plants (1807). Although they eventually gave up this book project, the present edition of the collection of ideas, excerpts and theses compiled, commented on and annotated by the authors offers insights into practices of collaborative reading, research and writing. Résumé Outre les carnets de voyages américains et russes, l’edition humboldt digital contient également la correspondance, les manuscrits et les notes qui ont été créés dans le cadre du programme de recherche de Humboldt. Pendant les années 1825 et 1826, Humboldt et le botaniste Carl Sigismund Kunth travaillent à Paris sur une nouvelle édition de l’Essai sur la Géographie des Plantes (1807). Bien qu’ils aient fini par abandonner ce projet de livre, la présente édition du recueil d’idées, d’extraits et de thèses compilés, commentés et annotés par les auteurs permet d’avoir un aperçu des pratiques collaboratives de lecture, de recherche et d’écriture. Obwohl sie dieses Buchprojekt schließlich aufgaben, ermöglicht die nun vorliegende Edition der von den Autoren zusammengestellten, kommentierten und annotierten Sammlung von Ideen, Exzerpten und Thesen einen Blick auf Praktiken kollaborativen Lesens, Forschens und Schreibens.

An overview of recent editions of Greek texts from Christian Antiquity is provided, with particular attention to the question of theories and methods of edition. First, we recall the main methods involved: the Lachmannian method, corrected or not by historical approaches, New Philology, etc. In a second step, we go through some large collections of editions of patristic texts, in order to identify their specificities and study their main recent productions; these are successively examined: Athanasius Werke; Gregorii Nysseni Opera; Die griechischen christlichen Schriftsteller der ersten Jahrhunderte; Patristische Texte und Studien; Corpus christianorum, series graeca; Sources chrétiennes. Some special cases are then considered: single-witness texts; treatment of overabundant traditions and phylogenetic methods; partial editions; anthologies, exegetical catenae and compilations. Finally, we propose a general reflection on the changes introduced in the editing process by the introduction of digital technologies, up to and including electronic edition itself. The study analyses and makes available the pamphlet Pasquill von itzigem Zustandt deß Kriegswesens from 1618/1619, which has been preserved in a manuscript version in the collections of the Hauptstaatsarchiv Dresden. Most probably, together with other intelligence documents, it was delivered to the court of Elector Johann Georg I of Saxony, who took a strong interest in the development of the Bohemian. The author of the pamphlet provides a list of influential persons, power groups and countries which could fundamentally intervene in the conflict between the Habsburg rulers and the Bohemian Estates. In each case he added a comment describing the current position of the individual, his past and other plans. At the same time, he clearly sided with the Bohemian uprising, which he attempted to defend in the eyes of the undecided. He was therefore merciless in his criticism, especially in his discussion of various members of the Habsburg dynasty, their followers and troops. However, he also employed irony against certain insurgents who, in his opinion, were acting too harshly or prioritizing their own goals. His text therefore represents an extraordinary example of an ironic evaluation of the contemporary military and political situation by an educated and engaged person. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The article deals with the complicated political situation in Silesia, specifically Breslau (Wrocław) in the middle of the fifteenth century. During this period, all submissive counties had to swear the oath of allegiance to King George of Bohemia, "king of heretics" as he was dubbed by Frederick G. Heymann. One canon of the Breslau cathedral, Nikolaus Tempelfeld (ca. 1400-1474), vehemently agitated against this, trying successfully to influence public opinion in the city. He wrote elaborate treatises on the theme of why George, an evident heretic, could not be king, claiming that it was impossible for truly Catholic people to accept him as a king. We know of three or four treatises by Tempelfeld, all in Latin. One of them was translated by the well-known Breslau town clerk Peter Eschenloer (ca. 1420-1481). Both the author and his translator are briefly introduced, and the German treatise is edited and commented. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The focus of the imports of TEI documents from the German Text Archive (DTA) into a graph database (Neo4j) evaluated here is the marking of uncertain readings and editorial additions in manuscripts. In this context, we also briefly present the TEI guidelines for dealing with doubts and uncertainties. Since several people usually work in editing or transcription projects, we regard responsibility information at dubious points as central to the interoperability of data and the intersubjective traceability of individual decisions. This applies in particular if additional information on the degree of security of a resolution is possible. Graph technologies offer possibilities for modeling, visualization and analysis of uncertainty and responsibility. With a sufficiently large amount of data, personal labeling profiles of the respective editors can be created, for example.

Fondée en 1985 par le philosophe et essayiste François George, l’Association des Amis d’Arsène Lupin se présente comme une association littéraire indépendante régie par la loi de 1901. Elle compte parmi ses adhérents aussi bien des amateurs des aventures du gentleman-cambrioleur que des membres proches de la communauté scientifique dont plusieurs spécialistes et biographes de Maurice Leblanc. Elle est à l’origine de deux publications : un bulletin diffusé en ligne (L’Écho de France) et L’Aiguille Preuve (aux Éditions d’Arsène), sa principale publication, d’abord annuelle puis semestrielle depuis 2014. L’Aiguille Preuve prolonge une littérature d’amateurs qu’initie La Gazette des Études Lupiniennes dès 1965. Elle répertorie aujourd’hui les dernières avancées universitaires consacrées au personnage tout en proposant des textes retrouvés ou réédités et des fantaisies d’amateurs éclairés.

The text presented in this article is the earliest homily in honour of the Archangel Uriel. The homily is attested in two copies: the earlier is EMML 1835 (fols 166ra–181vb) copied during the time of Emperor Zärʾa Yaʿǝqob (r 1434–1468), and the other is EMML 1841 (fols 137vb–151ra) dated to the seventeenth century. The text makes significant use of 4 Ezra and 1 Enoch, depicting Uriel as angelus interpres and helper of Enoch and Ezra.

The main themes of the text, occasionally ascribed to Ezra (Salathiel), are the Second Coming of Jesus Christ, the end of the world, the future rulers of Ethiopia, and the honouring of the Sabbaths. It is cast in the spirit of 4 Ezra, quoting it and Jubilees occasionally and extensively. As in 4 Ezra, its author is interested in knowing and declaring the future to call the faithful to observe the law and the ordinances. Reckoning the time by cycles, aqmar, provides him the revelation of future events ‘with exact dates’. The text, composed before the sixteenth century, is one more source of Gǝʿǝz apocalyptic literature. The article is an edition and translation of it as preserved in EMML 6429, fols 9v–39r.

This article tries to show, why we need a new edition of Galen's De sectis. It is argued that G. Helmreich's Scripta-Minora-edition, which is usually used in current research, is deficient mainly in two aspects: Firstly, there are three branches which form the basis for the transmission of De sectis: the Greek codices, the old Latin translation (6th century) and the medieval Arabic translation (9th century). Helmreich, however, has only taken into account only the Greek tradition. Secondly, Helmreich has not used all the Greek manuscripts which were known to him. In connection with the publication of the annotated works of Ernst Toller in 2015, the annotated edition of Ernst Toller’s letters was published in both online and print formats in 2018 in order to meet the needs of diverse research interests and users. To produce this highly anticipated edition in hybrid form, MS Word documents were created, converted to TEI XML, and built into a web interface. A particular emphasis was placed on usability in designing the web interface, since the online edition is intended not only for a scholarly audience, but also as a means of communicating the literature and culture of Toller and his context to a broader public.

This paper explores the concept of the ›edited text‹ and how it developed in the historical scholarly context. It describes the origins of objections that seek to deny the necessity of the ›edited text‹, and to frame it solely as a form of supplementary aid for the reader, while simultaneously insisting, with equally great emphasis, on the primacy of the ›edited text‹ as the cornerstone of the edition. In addition, this paper will also explain how modern editions interact with the construction of the ›edited text‹ as well as review the current state of debate in the field.

Scholarly editions were one of the first engines for introducing digital methods into the humanities and social sciences. The digital infrastructures developed for creating individual editions could lead to a new type of edition, if the data were prepared in such a way as to make them usable in multiple editions. The reuse of data is playing an increasingly important role, but it also generates new problems. This essay describes the opportunities and risks of overlapping editions using the example of the AMIE infrastructure.

The article explores some of the continuities and discontinuities that mark the ongoing change in international editorial ventures from a nondigital to a digital framework. Placing collaboration at the centre of the editorial work, it is assumed that reading is the minimal act of collaboration which lies at the basis of the one-language/one-literature model, i.e., the national philology paradigm. Such a paradigm appealed to international cooperation in a number of ways (archives, journals, publishing houses, etc.), but it also came to promote the idea of trans-national abstract goals (e.g., in Lachmann’s ideal of recension without interpretation or in Gaston Paris’s utopian cité des sciences). These goals favoured the progressive establishment of the digital paradigm, which in turn encouraged (or facilitated) a change of direction, from the study of in situ textual specificities to taxonomies aiming at a representation of the general structure of texts. Against the backdrop of the new paradigm, international collaboration has been intensified, but, it is argued, the new medium does not take the place of the old medium, rather interacts with it. In the end, the article touches upon some of the challenges faced by digital initiatives, namely regarding sustainability and political issues.

The act of digital editing is permanently in flux, and it is currently located between medial experimentation, the text-critical attachment to tradition, and standardization. This experimental character can be subsumed under keywords such as multiperspectivity, multidisciplinarity, and trans- or multimediality. These keywords serve as the (re)productive power driving the permanent pursuit of more, which was initiated by the shift in format, with its changing research interests and goals. However, the corresponding medial and material metamorphoses produce the dilemma of a documentary level of detail in the digital edition that requires new strategies for use. As these new possibilities take digital editing to its limits, the next question is where its future direction will lead.

This article deals with questions about interactive annotations of Robert Musils writings on MUSIL ONLINE. In this way, problem areas and approaches are described to show the development of structures of commentating.

Next to the primary goal of encoding and the systematic markup of the autobiographical documents in the manuscript collection of the Herzog August Library (HAB), it is of central importance for the project Selbstzeugnisse‹ der Frühen Neuzeit in der HAB (›Autobiographical writings of the early modern age in the Herzog August Library‹) to evaluate the options for producing and compiling texts and research results. In comparison with print-based methods, and using the group of autobiographical texts, the opportunities, advantages, and disadvantages of the scholarly distribution of information and communication should be explored. The Selbstzeugnisse in this project are defined as autobiographical writings, such as diaries, travel journals, or autobiographies, although the term is intentionally left open and is under discussion. The project results will be a finding aid to the Selbstzeugnisse using autoptic analysis of the manuscripts, a digital critical edition of the diary of Duke August the Younger of Braunschweig-Wolfenbuettel, and the presentation of the project results in a research portal.

Digital editions in the semantic web? This paper explores the question of the relevance and further development of semantic technologies in digital editions in the arts and humanities. The XML TEI-based editions of texts can be set on top of established publication structures. However, the widespread use of the TEI standard has led not to the interoperability of editions – despite the intentions of its creator—but rather to the increasingly strong specialization of the markup by discipline. This situation has led to the need for solutions for aggregation, re-usability, and the networking of editions as well as for encoding using a machine-readable semantic – one that is capable of generating other forms of connections using Linked Open Data (LOD), authority files, and other metadata.
