COGNITIVE load , *EDUCATIONAL outcomes , *COGNITIVE learning , *EYE tracking , *PRIOR learning , *ELECTRIC circuits - Abstract
In the context of a video-based learning environment, the present study examined how to support learners by auditory and visual instructional cues in learning complex materials. Against the background of theories of multimedia learning, we analyzed the effects of cues on cognitive load, learning outcomes, and eye movements. In an experimental between-subjects design with pre- and post-test, 46 participants learned by the support of instructional visual (n = 23) or auditory (n = 23) cues. The learning environment consisted of diagrams of electrical circuits, which were used as cognitive tools for solving physical tasks. There were no significant differences in cognitive load and learning outcomes (.00 ≤ ηp2 ≤.08) between the experimental conditions. However, measures of cognitive load were significant predictors of the learning outcomes. In addition, there were significant influences of prior knowledge on retention (R 2 =.213) and transfer of knowledge (R 2 =.257). A qualitative study delved deeper into gaze pattern of persons with low and high prior knowledge. Here, we found similar effects for both modalities: learners with low prior knowledge tended to show a more detail-oriented gaze pattern towards single elements of the circuits and learners with high prior knowledge tended to show a gaze pattern towards the circuits as a whole. With regard to the differences in the gaze pattern depending on prior knowledge and the complexity of the learning object, both a temporal and an instructional adaptability of the learning environment for learners with low prior knowledge in both modalities appear meaningful. For future research, it seems to be useful to relate the processes and results of learning in terms of a mixed-method approach to gain deeper insight into the use and effects of instructional cueing. Abstract (english): Multimodal explaining in the Classroom & per video. A model for the analysis and production of explanatory videos. Explaining is an everyday practice in schools; it is constitutive for the institution itself. Explanations are given in textbooks and in lessons, by teachers and students, purposefully, prepared or also incidentally and en passant, in German lessons and in all other school subjects. In recent years, this explanatory practice has been supplemented by explanatory videos, which are used in and outside of lessons, for follow-up and preparation and sometimes also as a substitute for lessons. But how does explaining in videos differ from explaining in class? In our article we propose a model for the explanatory video using a media-linguistic and media-didactic perspective and define the video as a specific form of multimodality also in relation to explaining in class.

«Immersive Medien bzw. Lernumgebungen» (vgl.

- Abstract
Background: In order to cognitively and physically activate people with dementia (MMD) in institutional settings, there are numerous touch-based multimedia applications specifically designed for this target group that are actually being used in practice. In contrast, the use of similar applications in domestic settings has been relatively limited., Aim and Method: This study is based on 11 expert interviews guided by questions and examines design options and requirements for application content as well as requirements for study designs to provide evidence of the effectiveness of touch-based multimedia applications for MMD and their caregiving relatives (PA)., Results: There is a high degree of consensus regarding the criteria for requirements for touch-based multimedia applications. Acceptance is highly dependent on user competence, usage practices, experiences and incentive structures; however, there are diverse opinions about their structural and content-related design. The quality of life is mentioned as an essential evaluation parameter for multimedia applications., Discussion: The highly variable individual life circumstances of MMD and their PAs, along with limited access options and a lack of suitability of the multimedia applications, may be causal factors for their relatively limited use, especially in domestic settings. Daily performance capabilities and individual disease progression pose special requirements for the scientific evaluation and the demonstration of the effectiveness of touch-based multimedia applications., (© 2024. In the present globally networked society English language is lingua franca especially promoted by internet. In face-to-face teaching, and especially online teaching, media transfer information, language and culture, and therefore multimedia, or multimodal communication stands out as necessary for stimulating critical visual literacy and learning English language. That is the way it is because correlation of image and text intermediates in the manner which strengthens the individual’s self-awareness of language and culture knowledge and activates his efforts and engagement in learning. Taking into consideration the above mentioned, this paper seeks to examine the following: a) the effort put into learning English language and b) ratio of the effort put into face-to-face and online teaching. The survey was conducted at the Juraj Dobrila University of Pula during the academic year 2019/2020, period of the obligatory staying at home because of Coronavirus pandemic. Such and similar research will be in the future important for permeation of media represented information as well as for expansion or replacement of face-to-face teaching in usual communication circumstances or in the circumstances when online teaching is the only option

Abstract This work raises the problem of the judicious use of the INJS multimedia resource center in Yaoundé. The central question it raises is that of knowing how to assess the added value of this infrastructure in the training of auditors of this institution. A methodology based on documentary analysis, systematic nonparticipant and concealed observation and questionnaire, revealed that the INJS multimedia resource center is a subject of academic and non-academic use. Thus, this space favors the search for information related to training, the entry of texts in the languages of the users, communication with actors of the scientific world. It equally gives rise to deviant practices, characterized mainly by the inappropriate use of messaging and imaging. However, proposals aimed at optimizing the contribution of this space have been formulated.

New tools are added to the educational toolbox in order to enhance and support learning. This descriptive study expands and explains the intricate nature of blended learning. Adding to the four basic components of time, space, media and activities are the three modes of formal, informal and non-formal delivery and the external components of prior learning and lived experience. Contrary to the narrow use of traditional, mostly Western-based learning options, blended learning opens up the opportunity to incorporate not only developing technology but also neglected, traditional means of knowledge acquisition into the process of learning. It opens new pathways for the teaching of Theology in an African context. It adjusts to individual needs and serves as a countermeasure against potential digital colonialism and digital serfdom on the one hand and provide opportunities that close the space and time gaps and filter out academic isolation on the other hand. Blended learning allows educators to use and combine pedagogical approaches and learning and teaching theories in creative ways. Intradisciplinary and/or interdisciplinary implications: The article calls for a widening perspective on the concept of blended learning, resulting in unique opportunities for Africanisation, decoloniality and a fresh way of teaching Theology in higher education.

The article presents the frequency of using written and online sources as well as of electronic media during preparation of secondary school students for in-class examinations in Slovene language and literature. Within the scope of the above mentioned aspects we have controlled the of age and type of secondary school programmes. In the first part of the article the concept of information and communication technology/multimedia, the concept of e-learning and the concept of student activity are defined. In the second half of the article I present the results of the research, which show the frequency of use of written and web sources as well as of electronic media. These results have shown that with the oral examination of knowledge of grammar and literature the use of the notebook is prevalent, while with the written examination of knowledge of grammar and literature the use of the course book is predominant. The frequency of use of World Wide Web sources and electronic media increases with age and according to the level of difficultness of education programme. Thus the use of the notebook is the most prevalent in vocational schools whereas the use of the course book is predominant at the level of technical gimnazija and general gimnazija programmes.

The article is trying to highlight the major skills of a present-day translator, without which failure is assured. Although we start with general (classical) requirements, particular ones will be discussed, such as the gradual shift from PRAT (paper-and-rubber-assisted translation) to CAT (computer-assisted translation). We argue that professional translators in the 21st century must make use of personal computers and specific software designed to support translation: translation memories (TM), term bases (TB) and translation environments (TE), which already have built-in machine translation (MT) possibility as well. This shift also entails that translators have to deal with further impediments as well: the so-called "text"-to-be-translated has changed to "whatever"-to-be-translated. We argue that would-be translators are hardly ever prepared for this new type of multimedia challenge (e.g. surtitles), thus leaving room for technical experts to discover their skills in translating multimedia. It is our belief that managing translations is directly linked with managing translators, and there are more traps for translators in the 21st century than a layman would think. Consequently, we would like to offer some tips how to build and acquire translation databases in order to catch up with the 21st century rush hour in the field of translation.

The use of flipped lectures and Active Learning has been explored in first year lectures for several years. Learning Catalytics software has been used to facilitate Peer-2-Peer learning in the Active Learning sessions. Several lessons were learned during these sessions which were important as we moved into delivering online material much more comprehensively. Bringing interaction to the lectures that were delivered live (synchronous sessions) was important to staff. Several technical solutions for producing online videos of high quality were brought into broader use. New teaching formats including a 'radio show' have been introduced to ensure that rich interaction with the students is possible with large groups.

Based on sample evaluation, this article investigates didactic actions and the display of expertise within the field of popular music-related online tutorials distributed on YouTube. In a first step, didactic activity and musical expertise are discussed with reference to institutional, interactional and media aspects in order to gain a comprehensive image of what influences the teaching of popular music. By means of the sample evaluation – the sample concentrates on highly-requested YouTube channels – basic insights into the specificity of the didactic situation induced by popular music-related online tutorials are to be provided. The analysis pays particular attention to the interlacing of knowledge organization, performance and audio-visual production. Overall, it can be shown how specific rules regarding the representation and gratification of expertise emerge in the YouTube media environment, examples of which are the “professional” appearance of the instructors and the compartmentalization of popular music-related cultural knowledge.

The close interaction between linguistics and lexicography over the last few decades has had many good effects, not least of which has been the development of a theoretical framework or meta lexicography. However, this close link has had an unfortunate result: the marginalisation in the theoretical debate of nonlinguistic dictionaries and especially of the encyclopaedia. In this article, semantic, lexicographical and pragmatic motivations will be given for a renewed interest in encyclopaedias. The revolution caused by CD-ROM encyclopaedias and the benefits they hold for a large spectrum of users, will be the most important pragmatic motivations addressed. Microsoft Encarta 99 Encyclopedia will act as a guide for the exploration of the impact this revolution has had on the ideas of user-friendliness and dictionary accessibility. Finally, a future is envisioned in which the Internet will be the logical culmination of the ultimate potential of computers as accessible, user-friendly reference tools.

Die Multimediatechnik stellt tatsächlich fakultative Tools bereit, die individuelle Kompetenzdefizite ausgleichen helfen., The given article is dedicated to the study of a relevant issue of modern methodology, namely – the use of innovative multimedia technologies in the acquisition of foreign discourse competence in order to increase motivation to learn a foreign language. Today leading universities are constantly increasing the use of multimedia tools in the study of foreign languages, because this technique in teaching foreign languages has proved to be a promising area, because it allows to control students’ learning activities with high accuracy and objectivity, providing constant feedback. New multimedia tools that use audio-visual format provide opportunities that traditional printed textbooks cannot provide. The article considers multimedia technologies (also used in online learning) as an important source of cognitive activity of students, the development of their creative abilities, interests, skills and abilities in mastering foreign discourse competence. There are now a large number of tools that can support online learning of German as a foreign language. The lessons conducted with the active use of multimedia resources provide an opportunity to use different learning platforms, through which traditional classes are expanded in the phases in which German is studied with the support of digital multimedia. We consider the current situation of introducing multimedia into modern education, based on which the prospects of modern teaching of German as a foreign language are formulated, as well as advice on learning that develops German students both discourse and linguistic as well as cultural competences. Thus, multimedia technologies provide optional help, which makes it possible to compensate for the individual deficit of competencies.,

Despite the still high relevance of linear TV usage, the importance of non-linear content distribution (e.g., via media libraries) is increasing. Based on interviews with seven managers from German public broadcasters, this article examines the strategic orientation of the broadcasters as well as the operational program management for their media libraries. The research shows: Linear television continues to have an important strategic value; at the same time, however, the broadcasters have recognised the need to expand the media library as a non-linear channel. A large part of the content in the media libraries is still based on linear TV programming, although the share of primarily non-linear productions is slowly increasing. Background: Malawi faces a severe lack of health workers. Despite initiatives to address this problem, a critical shortage of health care staff remains. This lack challenges the education and training of junior medical staff, especially medical interns in their final and crucial training year before they independently work as medical doctors.Project description: We have introduced an e-learning platform in the medical department of the Kamuzu Central Hospital (KCH) in Malawi. With the support of computer-assisted instruction, we aimed to improve the quality of medical training and education, as well as access to current medical materials, in particular for interns.Method: From March to April 2012, we conducted a qualitative evaluation to assess relevance and appropriateness of the e-learning platform. Data was collected via face-to-face interviews, a guided group discussion and a checklist based observation log. Evaluation data was recorded and coded using content analysis, interviewees were chosen via purposive sampling. Results: E-learning proved to be technically feasible in this setting. Users considered the e-learning platform to be relevant and appropriate. Concerns were raised about sustainability, accessibility and technical infrastructure, as well as limited involvement and responsibilities of Malawian partners. Interest in e-learning was high, yet, awareness of and knowledge about the e-learning platform among potential users was low. Evaluation results indicated that further adaptions to local needs are necessary to increase usage and accessibility. Conclusions: Interview results and our project experiences showed that, in the given setting, e-learning requires commitment from local stakeholders, adequate technical infrastructure, identification and assignation of responsibilities, as well as specific adaption to local needs.

The diploma thesis focuses mainly on advertising from the point of view of multimedia and how different media present and advertise a certain product. The diploma thesis consists of a theoretical part, where basic concepts, such as advertising, advertising campaign, advertising language, internet advertising, multimedia and advertising components are defined. The second part of the diploma thesis is the practical part, where two campaigns are presented and analyzed. The first campaign is for the electrical car Mini and the second for the cosmetic products with the trademark Nivea Sun. Both campaigns consist of four ads in different media, which are explained and analyzed in detail. The first medium is a poster or newspaper advertisement, a traditional advertising medium with a focus on the image. The second medium is a television clip, where the image is accompanied by sound effects, moving pictures and thus attracts the viewer’s attention even more. The last two media are the website and Instagram, which are representatives of internet advertising and are now more popular with the younger generation. At the end a comparison is drawn between the media, where we summarize differences and similarities between the ads in different media.

For millennia, maps have been used to transfer spatial information on a flat medium, generalized and to scale. Once exclusively a visual science, cartography has experienced an influx of technological advancements that have broadened the spectrum of mapmaking tools. These facilitated the use of the acoustic dimension in maps. Since the 1990s, cartographers have approached this topic mainly through the creation of thematic maps. This thesis explores the question how cartography might benefit from acoustic elements. The approach taken is to examine how audiovisual maps, i. e. maps that utilize both the visual and the acoustic dimension, might support cartographic communication and thus convey spatial information more effectively than purely visual maps. The cumulative thesis at hand contains three empirical studies that investigate possible cognitive effects from employing audiovisual cartographic tools possibly assisting map use and improving cartographic communication.

The concept of exhibition, which has been diversified from the 1850s to the present day, has changed in such a way that it will differ according to the purpose of use as well as the target mass and has created research fields in itself. Perception directions that can be made with display design enable to create controlled experiences. In the research, exhibition, visitor-space and increased reality titles, which are thought to be the basis of related perception management, are examined. In exhibition design, space, subject and object tasks can be assumed at the same time for the visitor to whom the message will be transmitted. It is thought that exhibition and space relation is active at the point where the experience of the visitors is controlled. Exhibits designed with the facilities provided by today's technology can differentiate between exhibitions and exhibitions. In this way, examples of exhibitions designed with increased reality applications have been examined. As a result of the investigations made, it is thought that the multimedia applications which enable to interact with the history in the context of the visitor-space relationship play an important role in the visitor experiences and the perception directions to be made during the exhibition.

Two ethnologists were thus made responsible for producing an exhibition in less than six months. This finally resulted in a 20-minute film. Looking at the technical and ethical issues that have emerged throughout the making of the film, this paper presents the different steps and problems we faced. It also analyses this achievement regarding its display conditions and its reception by the public. Two issues are particularly addressed. Firstly: what is the historicity of such a film? what does its temporality involve? Secondly: what does the exhibition production process does reveal of forty years of film archiving? The positive effects of a healthy lifestyle on the holistic physical condition and quality of life of cancer survivors is scientifically proven. The National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN) Guidelines for Survivorship specifically highlight the need for support in these areas. The lack of specialised offers for cancer patients in predominantly rural areas, however, represents a high level of assistance needed in terms of the development and implementation of a healthy lifestyle. Following a needs assessment, our aim was to conceptualise and design an easily accessible multi-media patient information system on the basis of a social-cognitive process model on health behaviour (Health Action Process Approach - HAPA). A higher level of health literacy represents, inter alia, the basis for informed choice and, as such, forms an important resource for the aftercare of cancer patients. Further studies are recommended on the acceptance, use and effects of patient information with regard to intended longer-term changes of health behaviour., Competing Interests: Die Autorinnen/Autoren geben an, dass kein Interessenkonflikt besteht., (Thieme. This study focuses on augmented reality (AR) technology from a copyright perspective. This compara-tively new technical phenomenon is characterized in particular by a dynamic intermingling of reality and virtuality. One of the key aspects of the study is the potential classification of such interactive works as cinemato-graphic works, which is examined and rejected. Consequently, a proposal of a better suited work type, the multimedia work, is presented before the marketability and authorship of such works is analyzed. First, the technical functionality and scope of AR technology are examined (chapter 1) in order to sub-sequently address its protectability (chapter 2). In particular, the similarity to other works defined by a combined aesthetic and technical nature (hybrid works), namely video games, is explored. Based on this, the possibility of protecting the underlying code as a computer program, on the one hand, and protecting the generated AR surface, in particular as a cinematographic work, on the other hand, is analyzed. It is concluded that the classification as cinematographic work, and also as any other known type of work, is to be rejected and furthermore, the prevailing view classifying video games as cine-matographic works is critically questioned. A proposal for an unnamed type of work – the multimedia work – is made. Modern interactive designs, in particular the digital surface of augmented reality environments, can be subsumed as such in a flex-ible and contemporary way. This study concludes with the third chapter, analyzing the practical marketability of such multimedia works as well as their authorship. A particular focus is set on the development of an analogous applica-bility of the legal framework for the exploitation of films (Sec. 88 et seq. German Copyright Act) to the multimedia work proposed here.

The qualified training of users of medicinal products is enshrined in law by the Medical Devices Act. In this article, a survey and analysis of the training measures for arthroplasty of the large joints offered by distributors of medical devices is carried out. To that end, the internet presence of suppliers of medical devices was evaluated with regard to the training measures on offer, and selected suppliers were sent questionnaires. The presentation of the available training programmes on the websites was incomplete. Even after the amendment of the Medical Devices Act, this has only slightly changed; however, legally required instructions for use were available for all distributors questioned. In some cases, there are large gaps in the range of modern training methods on offer, such as practical instruction, multimedia offerings or visual-haptic training methods.

ANESTHESIOLOGY , *PSYCHOLOGICAL stress , *EMOTIONS , *DATA analysis , *BIOLOGICAL monitoring - Abstract
Background: Many anesthesia departments operate a pre-anesthesia assessment clinic (PAAC). Data regarding organization, equipment and structure of such clinics are not yet available. Information about modern anesthesiology techniques and procedures contributes to a reduction in emotional stress of the patients but such modern techniques often require additional technical hardware and costs and are not equally available. Aim: This survey examined the current structures of PAAC in the state of Hessen, demonstrated current concepts and associated these with the performance and the portfolio of procedures in these departments. Material and methods: An online survey was carried out. Data on structure, equipment, organization and available methods were compiled. In addition, anesthesia department personnel were asked to give individual subjective attitudes toward the premedication work. Results: Of the anesthesia departments in Hessen 84 % participated in the survey of which 91 % operated a PAAC. A preoperative contact with the anesthesiologist who would perform anesthesia existed in only 19 % of the departments. Multimedia processing concepts for informed consent in a PAAC setting were in general rare. Many modern procedures and anesthesia techniques were broadly established independent of the hospital size. Regarding the individual and subjective attitudes of anesthetists towards the work, the psychological and medical importance of the pre-medication visit was considered to be very high. Conclusion: The PAACs are now well established. This may make economic sense but is accompanied by an anonymization of care in anesthesiology. The high quality, safety and availability of modern anesthesiology procedures and monitoring concepts should be communicated to patients all the more as an expression of trust and high patient safety. These factors can be facilitated in particular by multimedia tools which have as yet only been sparsely implemented in PAACs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The focus of medical-didactic research is the improvement of clinical-practical training. One way to support practical skills training in a time- and resource-saving way is to provide instructional videos. Often the freely available instructional videos do not meet didactic or content requirements. Creating your own videos can therefore be a useful alternative for teachers. There are a variety of instructions on the Internet for shooting instruction videos. To date, this does not include any concrete instructions/assistance for the production of medical instructional videos. However, the presentation of medical learning content in particular can contain many hurdles. The aim of this work was to design a checklist for the creation of instructional videos, which can be used as a guide. As a first step, a systematic literature search was carried out to identify works that deal with the creation and not the use of medical instructional videos. To date, corresponding publications do not exist. In a workshop, the participants, who already gained experience in creating this type of video, exchanged ideas. These were critically discussed and analyzed. As a result, a checklist was created. In a subsequent multi-step review process, the checklist was reviewed with regard to applicability, comprehensibility, completeness and quality of the items.Four phases in the creation of an instructional video could be differentiated: preliminary reflections, preparation, day of filming, post-production. The checklist is structured accordingly and should be actively processed phase by phase. The checklist is created in such a way that it can be used and edited without reading this text. Particular focus is placed on the patient and his needs. The checklist created provides useful help in the creation of medical instructional videos and can for the first time serve as a guide especially for orthopedic and accident surgical instructional videos.

Nowadays there are a few tools on the market which support the development of soft competences and build users’ motivation to self-development. One of the newly created tools, which is described in this paper is the Internet application called Integrated Development Assistant (ZAR), which can be accessed at the Internet address: www.zar.edu.pl. The ZAR system differs from the existent solutions because it combines online practices with the face-to-face ones (diagnostic and educational games). It also allows to follow in a flexible way and shape the educational path of an adult, therefore in some areas, it is an innovative tool, offering functions which have not been used in other applications so far and the one integrating various solutions applied in competitive tools. ZAR provides its users with the possibility to use educational contents, development materials, etc. The assumptions of ZAR are based on the concept of real/ideal me by E. T. Higgins.

macro- and microstructural information. In order to evaluate the methods which lexicographers employ to improve dictionary accessibility, the concept of guide structures was introduced by Hausmann and Wiegand (1989). Since the appearance of that article, various academics have written articles and read papers on guide structures in print dictionaries, but few studies have focussed on the tremendous potential of guide structures in electronic dictionaries. In this article it will be shown that electronic dictionaries add dimensions to the implementation of guide structures not possible in print versions. The role of two of the guide structures in the transfer of infonnation in CD-ROM dictionaries will be discussed. The access and mediostructures of the Microsoft Encarta World English Dictionary and the Elektroniese Handwoordeboek van die Afrikaanse Taal will be analysed and critically evaluated to illustrate the advantages of electronic dictionaries over print dictionaries and the urgent need for metalexicographical discussion of this publication medium. Keywords: ACCESS STRUCTURE; ACTIVE CROSS-REFERENCES; CD-ROM DICTIONARY; DICTIONARY ACCESSIBILITY; ENCYCLOPAEDIC DICTIONARY; GUIDE STRUCTURES; INNER ACCESS STRUCTURE; INNER SEARCH PATH; INTERNET; MEDIOSTRUCTURE; MULTIMEDIA; OUTER ACCESS STRUCTURE; OUTER SEARCH PATH; PASSIVE CROSSREFERENCING; USER-FRIENDLINESSOpsomming: Gidsstrukture in CD-ROM-woordeboeke, met spesifieke verwysingna EWED en ELHA T. Die sukses van modeme woordeboeke hang grootliles af vandie toeganklikheid van hulle makro- en mikrostrukturele inligting. Sleutelwoorde: AKTIEWE KRUlSVERWYINGS, CD-ROM-ENSIKLOPEDIË, EKSTERNESOEKROETE, EKSTERNE TOEGANGSTRUKTITUR, ENSIKLOPEDIESE WOORDEBOEK,GEBRUlKERSVRlENDELlKHEID, GIDSSTRUKTURE, INTERNE SOEKROETE, INTERNE TOEGANGSTRUKTUUR,INTERNET, MEDIOSTRUKTUUR, MULTIMEDIA, PASSIEWE KRUISVERWYSINGS,TOEGANGSTRUKTUUR, WODRDEBOEKTOEGANKLIKHEID

Qualitative researchers have evolved their methods continually, often due to technological breakthroughs that have enabled them to collect, analyze or present data in novel ways or to obtain a stronger authenticity or reflection of participant perspectives. In examining historical situations that have led to methodological shifts, we assert that the qualitative research community is currently on the precipice of another such change, specifically in the transcription of audio and visual data. We advocate for the benefits afforded by emerging technologies to collect, analyze, and embed in research reports actual multimedia data, thus avoiding the loss of meaning and unavoidable interpretation bias inherent in transcription. Working with data in its original multimedia (audio or video) state, instead of a transcription, can allow for greater trustworthiness and accuracy, as well as thicker descriptions and more informative reporting. We discuss the challenges still present with this approach, along with suggestions for improving future methodologies. URN: http://nbn-resolving.de/urn:nbn:de:0114-fqs1103216
