Complete and consistent atomic data, including excitation energies, lifetimes, wavelengths, hyperfine structures, Landé gJ-factors and E1, E2, M1, and M2 line strengths, oscillator strengths, transitions rates are reported for the low-lying 41 levels of Mo XXVIII, belonging to the n = 3 states (1s22s22p6)3s23p3, 3s3p4, and 3s23p23d. High-accuracy calculations have been performed as benchmarks in the request for accurate treatments of relativity, electron correlation, and quantum electrodynamic (QED) effects in multi-valence-electron systems. Comparisons are made between the present two data sets, as well as with the experimental results and the experimentally compiled energy values of the National Institute for Standards and Technology wherever available. The calculated values including core-valence correction are found to be in a good agreement with other theoretical and experimental values. The present results are accurate enough for identification and deblending of emission lines involving the n = 3 levels, and are also useful for modeling and diagnosing plasmas. Abstract

The launch of ERS-1, the first operational radar satellite, in 1993, has led to considerable interest in images acquired at radar wavelengths (1-50 cm) as means of gathering information about agricultural crops and their condition. The main advantage of radar systems with respect to optical satellites is that they can acquire images of the earth's surface irrespective of cloud cover, since clouds are transparent at these wavelengths. This is especially important for agricultural applications, where reliably timed images are needed throughout the growing season in order to follow continously the status of the crops as they develop. Multi-frequency polarimetric radar systems represent a convincing evolution of radar systems and their capabilities. The X-SAR/SIR-C radar-instrument, which was flown twice on the space shuttle in April and October 1994, allowed many researchers access to high quality radar images aquired from a space-borne system for the first time. Thus far, the full potential of radar has not been realized, mostly because existing radar satellites such as ERS-1 only aquire information at a single-wavelength and polarization. By restricting the collection of information to a single channel means such images often lack the extra information needed to characterize crops. However, recent studies using multifrequency-radar have shown that vegetation type, structure and condition can be better characterized when data is aquired at several wavelength and polarizations. In order to obtain significant differences in growth stages for identical crop types during the first 10-day long shuttle mission, winter barley fields were chosen along a gradient from southern Italy to southern Germany. These test fields were surveyed coincidentally with shuttle passes over them. One of the main results was that the spread in fresh biomass measured in (g m-2) between winter barley and maize fields as a function of their different growth stages, could be detected with great precision from the backscatter data. The best parameter for the measurement of winter barley and maize biomass was the ratio HH/VV at L-band. For the extraction of dry biomass in winter barley fields, the cross-polar polarization HV at C-bard showed the best results. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Measuring wheelsets are used today during the homologa-tion of new railway vehicle types. By measuring the wheel-rail forces it is checked, whether the requirements for a safe guidance are fulfilled. On the side of the infrastructure, an indirect method is the state-of-the-art: the geometric measurement of the track alignment. The measurable wavelengths of this method are limited. Therefore, errors with extremely long wavelengths cannot be assessed by this method. The direct measurement of the wheel-rail forces has the advantage to measure directly the safety-relevant values while taking into account the vehi-cles behaviour. The measuring wheelset technology is an approved method in vehicle homologation. Due to the progress in signal transmis-sion systems and in the simplification of operation it can be applied in long term applications as well. By the use of modern software technologies and the imple-mentation of a service oriented programming interface, the technology can be easily incorporated into infrastructure di-agnosis vehicles. One of the main challenges in railway asset management is the analysis of vertical track geometry in order to execute a condition-based maintenance strategy. Beyond the currently used approaches, studies to improve wavelength analyses on track geometry have been carried out in order to distinguish the cause of defects. Since the 1980's, attempts have been made to establish the power spectral density analysis for this purpose. However, due to the complexity of result interpreta-tion and computeraided calculation it was not implemented as a standard in track geometry analyses. Abstract

The global question of this thesis is in which regions of the ventral visual field Cataglyphis is able to measure distances by vision. Besides, the Introduction depicts the natural habitat, colony arrangement and navigation and orientation behaviour of the two species Cataglyphis bicolor and Cataglyphis fortis. Furthermore, the potential and actual sensory systems involved in navigation tasks are discussed. Bees are phylogenetically closely related to ants and rely nearly exclusively on their visual system in navigation tasks. Therefore, the visual navigation features of Cataglyphis are compared with those of bees. To determine which areas of the ventral visual field are suited for visual distance measurement, the second part of this thesis deals with theoretical calculations of the ventral visual flow fields (spatial wavelength of ground patterns and experienced angular velocities) occurring during locomotion. Thereby the potential oscillation of the head induced by locomotion is taken into account. This oscillation leads to changes in the eye-to-ground distance, which in turn leads to special non-linear perspective-induced switching effects in the perception of pattern size and angular velocities in the frontal azimuthal plane of the ventral visual field. Considering these switching effects which destabilize the animals’ environmental image, the calculations show that presumably only the lateral areas close to the horizon are suited for visual distance measurement. The third (experimental) part deals with the question whether the visual orientation and navigation behaviour of Cataglyphis can be examined under laboratory conditions. Initial experiments focussing on the optomotor response of Cataglyphis workers, queens and males were carried out to determine artificial visual flow fields that lead to a reaction.
