The purpose of this paper is to show, through the analysis of the libretto Mameli (1916), the peculiarities of Leoncavallo᾽s working method, which is based on a scrupulous historical, linguistic and musicological investigation which precedes the drafting of the librettos and the musical scores of a large part of his production: from Chatterton (1877-1896) to Pagliacci (1892), from Bohème (1897) to Rolando of Berlin (1904), from Maià (1910) to Zingari (1912). In Mameli, as had happened with I Medici (in whose libretto he had exhumed entire poetic forms of the ancient Italian lyric tradition), the Neapolitan librettist and opera composer inserts a notable number of quotes taken from the compositions of the young Genoese poet and patriot main character of the opera.
