DIALECTS , *ARCHIVES - Abstract
The paper presents an overview on the recovery of Tuscan data (audio and accompanying materials) of the Carta dei Dialetti Italiani (CDI). The study aims at showing the challenges met during the realisation of the CDI and highlighting the importance of recovering and safeguarding a research project largely forgotten by the very same Italian linguistic community. The relationship between oral sources and written documentation collected in the project allows us to observe the construction of the 'linguistic data' precisely from the recovered audio materials. In the last few years, artists' archives have gained a central role in the debate on the nature, treatment and valorization of 20th century and contemporary archives. They are fascinating and precious aggregations, characterized by a plurality of documentary typologies and by specific requirements for their description. Starting from the definition of personal archives, the paper proposes a definition of artists' archives and then attempts to indicate their main characteristics, contents and elements of complexity. Finally, the paper attempts to establish a dialogue between archivists and artists, collectors, gallery owners, critics and curators in order to find common elements and differences in their actions. STATE government archives , *NATIONAL territory , *LITERARY criticism , *LIBRARIANS , *ARCHIVES , *LIBRARIES , *LIBRARY catalogs - Abstract
The paper traces the history, including legislation, of the libraries of the State archives, born, often thanks to the will and tenacity of the directors who, through a capillary correspondence network with the cultural institutions of the national territory, fleshed out the newly erected libraries with volumes as a gift or obtained through exchanges of book doubles. The purchase on the antiquarian market and from private citizens of single volumes but also of entire book collections, important for reconstructing the history - including literary history - of the territory of competence, makes these libraries unique in their kind. Established for the updating of archivist officials and to allow them to study, reorganize and inventory documentary collections, over time they have changed their mission by expanding the audience of consultation to external users but only if they are unable to find publications in other libraries. To date, despite boasting a library heritage of a certain importance and often unique, they are managed in the absence of personnel in the role of librarian with all the problems that this entails in terms of cataloguing, planning of purchases and assistance for bibliographic research. HISTORY of archives , *ARCHIVAL resources , *AUDIOCASSETTES , *DATABASES , *SCIENTIFIC community , *ARCHIVES - Abstract
The digitization project Giving a new voice to sources. Communicate humanistic research for all aims to make available to the scientific community the audio archive of the Bruno Kessler Foundation's Library, which preserves the recordings of the conference activities of the two humanistic research centers of the Foundation. The project represents, at least in Italy, one of the first attempts to realize a virtual space devoted to audio archival sources researchable freely online to avoid the deterioration of a cultural heritage of extremely scientific relevance, leading to its conservation and availability. The deterioration of the analogue media of the archival collection makes the digitization a matter of survival which allows a diffusion otherwise unthinkable. The accessibility to the audio archival sources allows for enlarging the number of scholars and students that can benefit from the collection for the research. It also allows general users to approach the cultural contents of the humanities. The paper aims to describe the goals, the phases of realization of the project, the methodological problems due to the critical issues of the material supports, the descriptive analysis of the contents, and the opening of the database. The first part of the essay describes the history of the audio archive of the library. This archive covers an extensive period from 1974 to the new Millennium and is composed of the reels and compact audio cassette. The second part analyses the phases of work of the project, from the preliminary analysis of the support to the conversion and the digital reworking. The last part is dedicated to the method adopted in the compilation of metadata of the files and to the description of the structure of the database, as well as his research functions and the descriptive scheme of each audio. ART exhibitions , *PAVILIONS , *MAZE tests , *MAZE puzzles , *BIOGRAPHY (Literary form) , *ARCHIVES - Abstract
The Singapore Pavilion, set up as part of the 59th edition of the Art Exhibition La Biennale di Venezia, hosts the work of artist Shubigi Rao, a threefold multidisciplinary installation comprising a book, a video and a paper maze built around the theme of books destruction. They are part of a decade-long project under the title Pulp: A Short Biography of the Banished Book. Starting in 2014, it has brought the artist to visit archives and libraries all around the world and to meet women and men who daily dedicate themselves to defending books and cultures on the margins. Here we present the works exhibited in Venice (2022) and the three books that have already been published (2016, 2018, 2022) out of the five scheduled. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

CONCEPTUAL models , *ENVIRONMENTAL economics , *USER experience , *USER interfaces , *ARCHIVISTS , *ONTOLOGY , *ARCHIVES , *VIRTUE ethics - Abstract
In the nowadays world characterized by complexity, the digital systems for archival and bibliographic description are, especially in Italy, a faithful mirror of too many horizontal (among bodies with national functions) and vertical (among central and peripheral levels) complications. The integration of data sets conceived according to the up-to-date conceptual domain models would simplify the dynamics of representation, improve user experiences, and optimize the environmental costs of computing infrastructures. The concepts to be shared should relate to agents (individual or collective), places, and chronological data, deepening on how to address the more complex issues opened by things. This paper introduces three possible scenarios of semantic cooperation between archivists and librarians, not necessarily alternative: activating a conceptual matching through common entities, relying on a neutral semantic data infrastructure such as Wikidata, or, finally, developing a transversal core ontology. Hoping that disciplinary boundaries will not impede cooperation, two types of impediments must be considered: the organizational one (bottom-up, top-down, or a virtuous synergy between the two organizational models?) and the crucial issue of offering easy-to-use interfaces to end users, not only constituted by software agents. ARCHIVES , *DEFINITIONS , *NEW words - Abstract
This paper aims to give a new definition of the word "Archives" as a result of an accurate survey of doctrinal orientations on this specific subject, analyzing - word by word - each particular lemma which makes up the new proposal. Even though there is no definition that is valid in every context, but archival theory seems to suffer largely from a heterogeneous vision, downstream of a rigorous scientific journey, but dense of conceptual and lexical unexpected contingencies. Each term - with meanings and contexts - does not constitute a simple signifier, but refers to a specific baggage of every disciplinary and cultural tradition. For these reasons, we will attempt to provide an overview of the definitions of archives, from the particular to the general. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

HISTORY of medicine , *ARCHIVES , *SURGEONS , *ITALIANS - Abstract
Giovanni Alessandro Brambilla, personal surgeon of the Emperor Joseph II and Protosurgeon of Hapsburg Army, worked for several years on the drafting of an unfinished work dedicated to the Italians who made important contributions to the development of medicine and surgery. Among his papers preserved in the historical civic archive of Pavia there is an unpublished profile of Giovanni Battista Morgagni whom Brambilla met personally. The deep admiration shown in the text - here fully transcribed - by the imperial surgeon offers evidence of the consideration that Morgagni's work enjoyed among contemporary scholars. The widespread use of social media in people's everyday life has set the basis for big changes in the relationships between individuals, public and private bodies on a global scale. With public administrations willing to adjust their identities to new tools for communication, archival organizations approached to social networks to connect with new users and enhance their heritage. This paper aims to define methods, specificities and limits of the Italian archival institutions' social media policies, opening up to a first comparison with other national strategies, especially with the French one. A special focus has been put on the role of social networks in March and April 2020, when Italian archives faced a two-month lockdown following the health emergency caused by the spread of COVID-19: moved away from the ordinary work, archivists and archival institutes were encouraged to start alternative forms of communication with their users, including a more effective social campaign. AUTOBIOGRAPHY , *GENDER studies , *BOOKS & reading , *TWENTIETH century , *WOMEN employees , *ARCHIVES - Abstract
The paper proposes a synthesis and a reflection on the topics addressed during the conference "The other side of publishing: the women of books and reading in the 20th century", organized by the Apice Center, with the collaboration of the Department of Historical studies of the University of Milan and the Arnoldo and Alberto Mondadori Foundation. On this occasion it was intended to shed light on the women's role in the publishing during the 20th century, especially on those figures who, often without leaving any apparent trace, as editors, illustrators, translators and librarians, played a far from secondary role in discovering authors, in promoting works, in curating collections and disseminating good practices, such as reading. The conference days, organized in five sessions, were divided by themes: "Editorial work"; "In the workshop of translators"; "Promoting reading"; "Drawing the book", and "Female militancy". The event was characterized by the heterogeneity and the multidisciplinary approach of the young researchers involved, who were able to let communicate different skills, related to gender studies, literary, artistic and historical, preferring, from the point of view of the method, the exploitation of archive sources, the identification of new types of documents and the experimentation of new working tools, like digital databases. This strategy led to the articulation of an intense program, full of insights and discussion, branched out from the main topics identified, such as the importance of memory, the autobiographical writings, the ongoing transformation of editorial work and the ability of women to create strong institutions. The aim of this paper is to complete the analysis of the onomastic system in Giuliano Scabia's four novels based on the character and the adventures of Nane Oca, focusing on documents found in the author's archive. The onomastic practice of the author is deeply connected with his conception of language as a repository of stories: names are traces that refer to the childhood of the author and to the agricultural culture of the Veneto region, with its myths, its specific vocabulary, its characters. Particular attention is paid to those names which do not appear in the printed edition, but are well documented in the archive. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
The right to protection of confidentiality, involving any person mentioned in the documentation, is of great importance. The paper aims to outline the state of the art and to evaluate possible solutions for new improvements. The relationship between the rights of scientific research, the free expression of thought and the right to privacy of personal information are analyzed in legal terms, under Italian legislation, and in technological, just about the use of the technologies of the digital reproduction of documents, with particular attention to the concepts of communication and dissemination of personal data. The paper shows that the existing regulation framework fully meets the needs of protection of privacy, including in relation to technological changes taking place. Finally, it proposes strengthening instruments like the statement of informed consent and the elaboration of specific policies to ensure the highest possible protection. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

14. Nomi individuali a Manduria nel corso dell'Ottocento.

- Abstract
This paper deals with personal names of people born in Manduria (Taranto, Southern Italy) during the XIX c. It aims at highlighting the consistency of the considered database by comparing familiar preferences from the beginning to the end of the century. Emerging differences in the names' choice are also analyzed on historical and geographical bases and are discussed in connection with similar data collected in other regions. Italian State Archives preserve very interesting collections of names useful for the research in anthroponymy. They collect records about birth, wedding and death of each individual since the introduction of the Civil status (Napoleon 1806), through the Restauration period (1816), until the creation of the Italian Civil status (Jan. 1st 1866). Data is extracted from registers of birth available at the Archivio di Stato di Taranto and is related to the years 1809 and 1899. The main differences are related to changes in the frequency and the position of the traditional types and may account for the interplay between intra-familiar conservation and the diffusion of prominent religious and historical figures. - Abstract
This paper conjectures that standard archival descriptions are no longer efficient in order to answer to society needs, mainly in an intercultural perspective. After a brief evaluation of the peculiarities of cultural heritage different domain languages, the specific issues of archival descriptions are discussed, seeking the possible strategies - technological as well as cultural - valid to open to an integration of descriptive languages. A particular focus is proposed on RDA, an approach which shows to be the best candidate to harmonize the separate descriptions typical of archival domain and activating the potential informative integrations with any limitation of information environments and single content quality.
