Mikhail Glinka represents a fundamental figure in the Russian musical culture: in traditional historiography he is considered the equivalent in music of the poet Aleksandr Pushkin as founder of original literary genres and codifier of the linguistic means with which these were expressed. For a certain period, this "parallel myth" symbolized the birth of an exclusively Russian music, a music that rejected Western influence choosing to mirror the vague concept of 'Russian soul' that he himself contributed to formulate in the years of Russian Romanticism. Today this image is subject to revisionism, oriented to highlight Glinka's synthesis of the major trends of the coeval musical language. Especially in reference to theatre, this more complex image includes elements coming from the western koiné as well as elements of Russian origin. Glinka became familiar with the Italian music tradition because this had settled in Russia during the 18th century and was still à la page during the years of Glinka's training in St Petersburg. His will to improve his compositional skills, however, led him to a prolonged stay in Italy, which made him visit several cities of the peninsula, including Rome and Naples. In his mature years, he collected the impressions of this journey in a volume of Zapiski (Memoirs, 1854). This paper investigates the effect of early-19
th -century Italy on the composer as a 'Russian traveler', his own understanding of the country's culture, and the mental frame through which he could "read" the places he visited during his youth, and write about them in later times. The goal is to highlight the difference entailed by the two-stage process of reconstruction of an imaginary, in relation to the Russian context that acted as a counterpart to this gaze. This work arises from the collaboration between the Laboratory of Archaeological Research Methodologies and the Laboratory of Geomatics of the University of Genoa, based on a multidisciplinary approach, combining archaeological and engineering skills. Since 2016, the team of archaeologists from the University of Genoa has been working inside the Pompeii Archaeological Park in the shops of insula 14 of Regio VII, an important area within the urban context as it overlooks Via dell'Abbondanza, the most important road, and it is located in a central position, in proximity to the main public areas, such as the Forum. From the beginning of the project to the present day, the archaeology team has analysed the tabernae from a stratigraphic point of view. So, simultaneously with the excavation activity, a stratigraphic analysis of the walls and coatings was carried out, involving both the commercial establishments being excavated and the three large houses of the insula, mainly focusing on the most western one, named 'Casa della Regina d'Inghilterra'. In September 2020, a survey campaign was carried out by geomatics engineers aiming to applying innovative survey methodologies to the architectural complex of the entire insula and, specifically, to the 'Casa della Regina d'Inghilterra'. In particular, the survey data were collected by total station, GNSS, laser scanner, combined with terrestrial and UAV photogrammetry. This paper presents the preliminary results obtained from the geomatic survey campaign, leading to the creation of an accurate photogrammetric model which can be used as a basis for a reconstructive model, whose hypotheses will be confirmed or denied by a future structural analysis. SCIENCE fiction ,THEMES in literature ,ORGANS (Anatomy) ,CITIES & towns ,RUSSIAN literature ,DOGS - Abstract
In this article, the author turns his attention to two specific literary motifs from Russian science fiction literature of the early 1920s: surgically obtained rejuvenation and pioneering transplantation between animal and human organs, in particular brain transplantation. These elements are present in important, mostly contemporary literary works by Mikhail Bulgakov (Heart of a Dog), Aleksey Tolstoy (The Blue Cities) and Alexander Belyayev (Hoity-Toity). By means of a contrastive analysis of these literary motifs in the works of these writers and a reconstruction of the Russian and Soviet 1920s scientific context that generated them, when medicine made enormous strides, the author will attempt to find a connection between these works and thus determine the existence of a common pattern that justifies the similarities in the thematic and stylistic approach of their authors. WAREHOUSE management ,WAREHOUSES ,CARTOGRAPHY ,CITIES & towns ,WAREHOUSING & storage - Abstract
The paper presents a GIS platform for the management of archaeological warehouses located in the territory of the IV Municipality of Rome. The need to create a GIS was owed to the distribution of archaeological material in at least 15 different stores. The contents and provenance of the boxes and their archaeological material have been recorded. A GIS platform has been developed, based on QGIS Desktop (version 3.0) and a geodatabase built on PostgreSQL/ PostGIS. As a cartographic base, both the existing cartography in the WMS format and the free downloadable cartography in .shp format were used. Further, a single table was created, merging the existing tables of different formats from the various warehouses examined. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

MASONRY ,CITIES & towns ,DOMESTIC architecture ,SAMPLING methods ,WALLS ,DATABASES ,ROMANS - Abstract
This article is the result of a research project currently being conducted at the University of Molise (Italy), aimed at drawing a cognitive framework of Roman building techniques in today's Molise Region. The methods used to pursue this objective are specifically linked to masonry walls analysis, with an innovative interdisciplinary approach, entailing the use of a database, which is the result of the work of an international team of researchers (ACoR), in addition to the use of experimental methods to analyse the metric and the GIS platform to manage the geo-localization of the sites. Two different case studies are included in this paper, such as a Roman villa, i.e. a private building, in the municipality of San Giuliano del Sannio (CB), and a theatre, i.e. a public construction, in the municipality of Venafro (IS). Thanks to the different nature of the two examples, a different approach was used in analysing the parameters. For the private villa, the method employed was a stratigraphic reading of the structure, performed analytically; whereas for the public building, given its construction complexity being examined and the lack of results from the archaeological investigation, a sample method with metric parameter analysis was applied - already tested on the sites of Olimpia, Ostia and Cuma. The main aim is to contribute, through an extremely accurate analysis, filing, and geo-localization system, in the understanding of an area which is still under-researched and in which architectural information are extremely fragmented and little known. NEIGHBORHOODS & society ,CITIES & towns ,PUBLIC spaces ,EVERYDAY life ,INTERPERSONAL relations & culture - Abstract
This paper focuses on the neighbourhood as the key site for understanding broader social processes in contemporary urban societies. In recent decades we see a new interest in the neighbourhood, as a consequence of the proliferation in the urban space of borders that isolate or interrupt the flows of communication and resources, creating new inequalities among social groups. The essay presents some theoretical tools for conceptualizing the neighbourhood and studying how it impacts on people's everyday life and on their chances of life. The concept of community, traditionally used in neighbourhood studies, seems inadequate for capturing the current models of socio-territorial organization in contemporary city. Concerning in particular to the question whether and how the neighbourhood could influence urban liveabiity, the paper proposes the concept of neighbourhood as a filter, that sets different access thresholds to the "network of networks" of relationships, services, opportunities that is the city. HOUSING ,PRODUCT quality ,POST-Fordism ,CITIES & towns - Abstract
This paper examines housing quality as a dimension of urban liveability. In the first part of the paper the act of inhabiting is defined as a complex social practice. In the second part a definition of housing quality is given, made up of five dimensions: physical quality of the dwelling, dwelling size, neighbourhood quality, security of tenure and affordability. In the third part of the paper four indices of housing quality are defined, using data from Eu-Silc. Each index is then analysed with reference to Italy. The analysis shows that housing quality in Italy is generally good, but at the same time some problems are highlighted, mainly within highly urbanized areas. Lower housing quality within the urban areas can be explained by the shift towards post-fordism. The profound social and economic transformations related to this process have given rise to a "new housing question", characterised by the combination of old and new forms of housing deprivation. URBAN planning ,ABANDONED buildings ,INDUSTRIAL sites ,BUSINESS partnerships ,CITIES & towns - Abstract
This paper investigates the rapid spread of urban mega-projects on aban- doned industrial sites of European and American cities. These projects are gen- erally developed within the context of public-private partnerships, are frequendy mixed-use and cater to the needs of office-based businesses and tourism and leisure services. The introduction of new methods of financing, with the increas- ingly integration of real-estate sector into the new networks of global capitalism, is an important distinctive element, as also the incorporation of the designs of world-famous architects. This trend has been the result of changes occurred in the economy of advanced capitalist countries as well as of the imposing of the urban redevelopment as a key issue in the political agenda. The paper argues that the property-led urban regeneration and mega-projects don't necessarily contribute to make the city more affordable, efficient and inclusive. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The Olympic legacy, whether temporary or transitory, can manifest itself before, during or after the Games. It can quickly disappear after the event if efforts are not made to keep it alive through, for example, cultural programming, new environmental legislation, public awareness programming or new, more comprehensive applications. The study has the objective of recounting the Olympic legacy of the Torino 2006 Games through the results of the qualitative interviews held with the main actors of the event. In recent years, the Olympic legacy and the planning of the Olympic legacy have become increasingly important in the choice of host cities. The importance has allowed many cities, such as London, Sydney, and Tokyo, to develop an entity in charge of planning and managing the post-Olympic legacy. The intangible possibility of training and involving new profiles in the territory is fundamental to managing the Olympic structures in the post-Olympic period. The professionalism of resources, the definition of objectives, management tools and human resources are some of the critical elements for the organisation of a working team that can promote the post-Olympic transformation of host cities. The promotion of an Olympic city and an urban model to pursue can catalyse supra-local transformations that support the intangible knowledge of citizenship. The social transformations through the promotion of the city and its image can become a "Know-How" of the organising committee which, in the post-Olympic phase, will support the future strategies of the city regarding the organisation and planning of the mega-event. These elements allow us to advance a new hypothesis on the development of new modernity induced by sports and mega-events. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Driving inspiration from classic sociology, this paper try to sketch a new way to think to social distance in contemporary society. A key role in defining and understanding social distance is played by Simmel's thought ad exposed in Sociology where he considers social distance as a process deeply embedded in the social production of knowledge. It is in facts by means of social knowledge that we give sense and organize the physical space, so that it is always a social space as well. At the same time, social space shapes the way in which actors interact and relate to each other, leading the social construction of the cathegories by which they perceive other people as distant or near. So, through Simmel's cathegories, we can describe urban space as the dynamic overalpping of two maps — physical and social — and we can understand transition from traditional, modern, european town to contemporary metropolis as a change in this overlapping that in the town was full and that, in contemporary metropolis is more problematic and complex. QUALITY of life ,CITIES & towns ,SOCIOLOGY ,CIRCADIAN rhythms ,URBAN density - Abstract
In the first part, the article depicts the origin and the evolution of theories and studies on quality of life, from the sixties to the more recent activities performed by ISQOLS (International Society for Quality of Life Studies). The second part regards the conceptualization of quality of life in the city, in particular considering the importance of the urban size in generating services accessibility and living conditions. To such a purpose a set of notions defined by Amartya Sen, like functionings and capabilities, have been adopted and applied to the analysis of the urban contexts. The last part presents some approaches concerning spatial, socio-economic and symbolic elements and indicates related methodological issues to look at in order to develop new researches on quality of life also paying attention to the resident and non resident metropolitan populations. The article presents a representation of the city in late eighteenth-century French culture. Through the analysis of the thought of two end-of-century architects, Claude-Nicolas Ledoux and Étienne-Louis Boullée, the author proposes two particular urban views, both inspired by the concrete desire for radical transformation and empirical aesthetically and conceptually post-materialist philosophy. Criticism of the city, utopian literature, artistic and architectural debates, shape a framework within which Ledoux and Boullée fit, offering the possibility of rethinking urban space, its meaning and its profoundly innovative civic responsibility.
