This paper focuses on the papermaking inventions that, beginning with the Flemish physician Andreas Vesalius' De humani corporis fabrica (1543), became part of anatomy books. In particular, flaps became the tactile and visual tool that allowed, by progressively lifting individual flaps of paper (lift the flap), to represent the layered arrangement of organs and apparatuses of the human body. These movable devices, along with others (e.g., volvelle) widely employed especially in astronomy texts, became the educational complements of the new science. Giovanni Alessandro Brambilla, personal surgeon of the Emperor Joseph II and Protosurgeon of Hapsburg Army, worked for several years on the drafting of an unfinished work dedicated to the Italians who made important contributions to the development of medicine and surgery. Among his papers preserved in the historical civic archive of Pavia there is an unpublished profile of Giovanni Battista Morgagni whom Brambilla met personally. The deep admiration shown in the text - here fully transcribed - by the imperial surgeon offers evidence of the consideration that Morgagni's work enjoyed among contemporary scholars. The article aims to show that in the second half of the XIXth Century the European Romantic trend in literature became even in Italy part of the launch pad for the first "Fanta-clinic" and "Medical-thriller" novels. According to the lesson of the coeval French literature it also baptized a kind of modern poetry turned to épater le bourgeois through the transfiguration of Anatomy and later through the use of the scientific method in composing verses and novels. This paper aims to focalize some links between Literature and Medicine by concerning literary inspirations felt by many coeval writers about Paolo Gorini (1813- 1881) and Efisio Marini (1835-1900). The paper tries to demonstrate that the dark suggestions offered by the two scientists to some well known names of the Italian Literature (from Carlo Dossi to Matilde Serao) grew up strong in the Northern part of Italy as well as they did in the Southern part. In this paper I aim to investigate the theme of corrupted imagination in Robert Burton’s Anatomy of Melancholy, translating it from a medical perspective to an aesthetical one. To this end, I decided to start from a very specific site, i.e. thermal baths, from which I trace an exegetical path that first of all isolates hypochondriacal melancholy – i.e. the physiological cause that such a treatment was meant to cure – as a disease connected to the intellectual faculties. This paper outlines the history of the Cabinet of Pathological Anathomy at the University of Palermo, describes rapidly its current status and analyzes the composition of its displays in 1859. It aims to highlight the analogies with other collections of a similar kind and to pinpoint potential actions to endorse and develop this important scientific asset.

Computer assisted education in radiology has been increasingly used during the past ten years and now complements traditional learning resources. Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) of musculoskeletal anatomy, and particularly of joints, lends itself naturally to learning modules on computer. This paper describes the design, development and use of an interactive computer assisted teaching module of MR joint anatomy on CD-ROM for Macintosh: to date, we have used this atlas for ankle and elbow anatomy. The atlas is divided into three main sections: MR anatomy, traditional anatomy and a quiz. On each MR image, any anatomical detail can be identified clicking on it with the mouse. Buttons allow to visualize cross-reference points and to go directly on the desired image. If the student wants to look at anatomical drawings of the last identified structure, a button retrieves all the cards in the traditional anatomy section containing that structure. Finally, the student can make his own self-assessment, verifying his learning immediately with the exam mode: the software makes a random selection of 10 MR images where an anatomical structure must be indicated: if the answer is wrong, the software gives the right one and shows the misinterpreted structure. Then, the student is given a total score for his performance. The computer assisted teaching modules present some advantages: the images can be viewed in a given sequence (like traditional learning resources) or in any self-paced, customized way; this possibility, together with the friendly interface of Macintosh computers could make learning more active and pleasant.

The research paper discusses the facial features on a number of statues of kings and queens from the New Kingdom, and whether they are “realistic or idealistic” when compared to their mummies’ faces. The aim is to try to understand the extent to which the anatomical differences of the individual features of the statues’ faces differ to the facial features found on the corresponding mummies’ faces.

In a cultural context dominated by men, Jane Sharp was the first English woman to have authored a midwifery treatise. The present essay highlights the originality of her Midwives Book (1671) in comparison with the previous male treatises, showing how she consciously exploited her male counterparts' works, often taking position against them. In pursuing this purpose, the article analyzes the functions attributed to the use of a metaphorical language, identifying some specific rhetorical strategies: in particular way, Sharp's insistence on her own visual experience as a certification of truth, and her use of metaphors taken from the natural world. Thus, the Midwives Book seems to take the shape of an "experiential journey" in the woman's body which, in Sharp's words, is no more the territory of mere speculation, but a real landscape, seen, contemplated, explored and described.
