The paper first tackles some problems (of genre, chronology and style) related to the anonymous poem preserved in POxy 1794, then offers a thorough commentary on it. The analysis shows that the poem is an example of careful, if epigonal, composition.

Videogames are a fundamental tool in shaping new generations' collective imagination. In particular, videogames usually present limited depictions of masculinity and femininity and, for this reason, offer canonical norms concerning gender identity. The present paper explores narrative videogames as a key medium to indirectly deconstruct gender canons. Specifically, the paper focuses on the analysis of non-conventional female identities in three videogames based on the adventures of three different protagonists that counteract gender standards. The general tendencies regarding the gender of nouns are dealt with in the paper with the specific aim of building a contrastive microtypology of German, Italian and English. In particular, up to six different types and functions of gender will be distinguished and will be tested against the background of empirical data drawn from the three languages. Interesting phenomena of convergence and divergence at all levels of the respective linguistic systems pop out from the contrastive analysis, starting from the phonological level up to the pragmatic and cognitive dimension. SCIENTIFIC knowledge ,GENDER role ,ELECTRONIC textbooks ,TEXTBOOKS ,TELEVISION talk programs ,CONTINUITY - Abstract
This paper focuses a genre belonging to a complex level of LSP communication which can be defined as "intermediate", i.e. the academic textbook. This level plays a central role in granting the continuity of specialised scientific knowledge, as the fundamental requirement for the survival of each scientific field lies in the possibility of recruiting new members through formal (academic) education. Since this latter largely makes use of (and often depends on) this genre, a description of its linguistic features, internal structure, and the way it presents scientific knowledge should necessarily fall within the research trends in LSP communication. The aims of this paper are therefore twofold: 1. to determine the levels of analysis required for the description of this genre and to describe the characteristics of the (neurological) textbook according to those levels, and 2. to interpret such features and thereby investigate whether they may be classified exclusively as didactic or whether other categories are necessary to interpret them. The assumption arising from the analysis is that only some functional aspects can be regarded as didactic while others can only be interpreted as serving the (socially determined) function that this text fulfils in its context of use. The analysis also offers insight into of the differences existing among the various types of textbooks. These can in fact be connected to the way the two functional features of the texts are balanced depending on the specific needs of the addressees. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In the public debate, on the one hand, the so-called cancel culture (CC) is stigmatised as an attack against the Western tradition and the rationality of dialogue, on the other, it is associated with the oblivion of material issues, substituted by identity claims. These two readings can be opposed by a third that frames the events subsumed under CC in a positive way as 'intersectionality', and a fourth that, while appreciating its purpose, challenges its liberal grammar of rights. CC, identity politics and intersectionality - although they identify both broader and more specific sets of problems - can thus be read as the names that different scholars give to the same dynamics. After briefly reviewing some of the literature on the topic, the paper will focus on the conflict between economic instances and identity, first by recalling some reflections from the Marxist tradition on the subject of 'race' and gender, and then by looking at two contemporary Marxist texts, by Asad Haider and Ashley Bohrer. With a different stance on intersectionality, but criticising economicist determinism, the two authors reason about ways of composing social heterogeneity in a political project. This allows for an original reading of some of the issues involved in the discussion about CC. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Christa Wolf's short story Neue Lebensansichten eines Katers has generally been read as a parody of the technocratic ambitions of the GDR and a satiric science-fiction in which women play no role. The following paper, however, focuses on the female characters of the story to illustrate the literary strategies that Wolf adopts to criticise and subvert the conventional power relations operating in gender dynamics. A close reading of the text will lead to a re-evaluation of the significance of the story within the path of the author's growing gender awareness, which culminates in her later rewritings Kassandra and Medea. In intergenerational projects, learning a craft is an activity that may be of interest to people of different ages. This paper focuses on knitting as a craft. In most Western societies, knitting is often considered a craft for women, but on Taquile Island, Peru, it is the men who knit. This paper discusses knitting from an intergenerational perspective whilst focusing on gender and culture. To this aim, we introduce an intrinsic case study to examine the role of gender and culture in intergenerational learning. The data used in this study was collected during a visit to Taquile Island. In summary, the study’s findings reveal that (i) on Taquile, members of the community invest in maintaining cultural traditions in opposition to being swept along by (con)temporary social changes; (ii) knitting on Taquile is approached as a practical technique in contrast to Western culture where knitting is connected to the concept of ‘well-being’; and (iii) whilst gender structures may set frames for performance, the Taquile case demonstrates that what is typically considered ‘male’ or ‘female’ may vary.

BINARY gender system ,ENGLISH language ,GENDER ,LEXICON ,RAILROADS - Abstract
The paper analyses the diffusion of the term BINARIO (N) in its meaning related to gender identity in the Italian lexicon. In order to analyse the use of the term BINARIO (N), different sources have been investigated, such as Italian web corpora, Google searches and contents provided by Italian youtubers dealing with gender issues. I suggest that the term BINARIO (N), borrowed from English in its meaning of 'dichotomy' related to gender issues, has been reinterpreted in the light of a pseudo-etymology (a popular but false belief about the origin or derivation of a specific word) that involves the term BINARIO (N) 'rails, railway'. The metaphor LIFE IS A JOURNEY, described by G. Lakoff, seems to play an active role in the speakers' interpretation of the construction BINARIO (N) di genere, which can shift from the meaning of 'gender dichotomy' to that of 'predetermined path (rails) in gender identity'. As a matter of fact, gender binarism is often represented as a railway system, and those who do not identify their gender in binary terms are described as passengers being derailed from their path. Television is a dominant medium that can influence one’s attitude and social ideologies formation since it reflects sociolinguistic reality and maintains language ideologies and existing social stereotypes. For that reason, we can mention so-called female and male language patterns and their main characteristics, which are to a great extent associated with social power, i.e. the role that an individual has in his social community or community of practice. This paper aims to examine whether the Greek media and more specifically, the Greek TV series promote so-called male and female language patterns, as well as social stereotypes directed towards women. In this paper, we analysed the linguistic behaviour of the protagonists of the Greek series Mην αρχίζεις την μουρμούρα. Qualitative non-experimental research based on the analysis of linguistic behaviour at the level of the characters‘ lexical choice, Vaso and Charis showed that their choice of language patterns is proportional to their social or professional status. In addition, we noticed the presence of certain social stereotypes, while it is evident that the use of stereotypical-female language patterns is associated with a hierarchically lower social position.

Our economy is broken, with hundreds of millions of people living in extreme poverty while huge rewards go to those at the very top., The number of billionaires has doubled since the financial crisis and their fortunes grow by $2.5bn a day, yet the super-rich and corporations are paying lower rates of tax than they have in decades. The human costs – children without teachers, clinics without medicines – are huge. Piecemeal private services punish poor people and privilege elites. Women suffer the most, and are left to fill the gaps in public services with many hours of unpaid care., We need to transform our economies to deliver universal health, education and other public services. To make this possible, the richest people and corporations should pay their fair share of tax.

Last year saw the biggest increase in billionaires in history, one more every two days. This huge increase could have ended global extreme poverty seven times over. 82% of all wealth created in the last year went to the top 1%, and nothing went to the bottom 50%., Dangerous, poorly paid work for the many is supporting extreme wealth for the few. Women are in the worst work, and almost all the super-rich are men. Governments must create a more equal society by prioritizing ordinary workers and small-scale food producers instead of the rich and powerful.

This paper analyzes Harry Brighouse and Erik Wright’s paper “Strong Gender Egalitarianism” and discusses the three options for parental leave that they propose to help achieve gender egalitarianism, or a structure in which the division of domestic labor is not affected by gender. This paper discusses potential weaknesses of these options, and, building on the concepts that Brighouse and Wright put forth, proposes a modified version of their policies which will ensure the equal distribution of domestic labor in the family.

In recent years, there has been a notable rise in the portrayal of LGBTQ+ characters in TV series available on online platforms. This poses a challenge for translators from a linguistic, social and cultural perspective, as they need to deal with the transference of fictional speech according to diverse identities. In this respect, translators are not only in charge of translating the fictional speech for a given audiovisual product to be either subtitled or dubbed into a different language, but they have the role of conveying and preserving LGBTQ+ characters’ identities accurately. The objective of this paper is to analyze the translation of sex-related language in TV series with LGBTQ+ representation. On the basis of a selected corpus of two different English-language TV series (Euphoria and Sex Education), this descriptive study analyzes the fictional speech of several LGBTQ+ characters and focuses on the translation of sex-related language from English into Spanish in both their dubbed and subtitled versions. The translation strategies used to render sex-related conversations when translating audiovisual fiction are discussed throughout the study in order to show different ways of facing the translation of specific sexual expressions. In this respect, the study intends to highlight the fact that all decisions made when translating fictional conversations that LGBTQ+ characters have about sex may have an influence on the representation of several topics such as sexuality, gender or identity. The study also discusses how other aspects such as the translation of inclusive language and the expression of gender identity may also affect the portrayal of LGBTQ+ characters.

The paper analyzes the use of late 19th – early 20th century photographs by Antoin Sevruguin in the paperback edition by Helsinki-based author Ivar Lassy Behind Lattice and Veil (Helsinki, Otago, 1917). Photographer Antoin Sevruguin, originally Russian, lived and worked in Tehran from late 1860s up until his death in 1933. A generalized picture of a Persian woman is among the most common motifs of photographs that had been bought from Sevruguin studio by travelers and researchers alike, and eventually landed in the West. This paper looks closer at the re-contextualization of Sevruguin’s images in Lassy’s book as an example of adaptation of photographs as means of cultural representation by both popular and scientific discourse of the Orient.

Ethnic marginalisation minorities is a recurring theme in ethnic writers’ works, such as Julia Alvarez’s novel How the García Girls Lost Their Accents, which highlights the marginalisation of Dominican family García in American culture. This paper, which draws on postcolonial and Latina feminist theory, focuses on the societal practices and familial dynamics that decenter the García sisters’ status both in their family and Dominican and American sociocultural environments. The close reading analysis conveys various forms of discrimination and oppression against the García sisters based on gender and ethnicity. Contrary to the novel’s title, which implies that the sisters eventually lose their accents or connection to Dominican culture, the paper argues that the sisters, in their effort to transcend the margins, manage to situate themselves between two cultural fames, developing specific bicultural consciousness, which aids them in overcoming feelings of marginalisation, cultural and social alienation.

This paper explores the intersections between gender, display, and empire at turn-of-the-century world’s fairs in the United States. The 1915 Panama-Pacific International Exposition serves as a case study. Designed to celebrate the completion of the Panama Canal, the 1915 fair was hinged on contemporary notions of manliness and used gender ideology to articulate prevailing ideas and assumptions about the American nation, its new empire, and its influence on the entire world. Indeed, gendered rhetoric found its way into numerous contemporary published tracts, articles, paintings, and popular culture that take on the enormity of the Panama Canal and its implications. Manliness and its mechanical prosthetic, technology, became the arenas through which the United States refashioned its national body and confidently assumed its new role as imperialist on the world stage.

We start from the observation that language pairs like Polish and English display an intriguing asymmetry: Polish has the structural resources to express grammatical gender in nouns while English predominantly leaves these under-determined. Therefore, a speaker of English can conventionally say “I am a nurse” irrespective of the speaker’s gender, while in Polish male/female/non-binary speakers would likely use variable forms. This asymmetry leads to nuanced translation choices which this paper aims to explore. Based on a newly compiled corpus of English-to-Polish Netflix subtitles – amounting to 3.5 million words – we examine how 113 different occupation-related feminatives are deployed by translators. We address three main research questions (RQ1-RQ3). RQ1 is about the frequency of the relevant feminatives in our corpus. RQ2 deals with how the feminatives are distributed across the 284 productions analysed in the dataset. Finally, RQ3 addresses the relationship between the frequency of feminatives in Netflix subtitles and the acceptability of these feminatives, as judged by speakers.

Society management and the COVID-19 pandemic require continuous restatement and consolidation. Furthermore, the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development created by the United Nations establishes a set of 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) that meet the needs of the present without compromising the ability to meet the needs of future generations and where Goal 5 addresses gender equality as a central priority. The main aim of this paper is to present a crossed-analysis study on how the health crisis has influenced differently the social behaviour between gender and generations in Spain. For this study there have been used a massive open data from the Sociological Research Centre (CIS). The mixed techniques´ methodology of this research was applied to study four social effect dimensions, such as “way of living”, “way of thinking”, “way of self-healthcare” and “social habits and behaviour”. The used techniques contributed analytically to gender and generations management during the pandemic with the intent of complementarity. Obtained findings by analysing four studied dimensions explain the effects and consequences of the pandemic involving differences between men and women, younger and older generations, leading to society management implications that can timely serve as a paradigm with scientific insights for public policies.

Since the success of the Twilight saga (2008-2012) Kristen Stewart has become a powerful image whose status of star is permeated of many aspects that make of her also a celebrity. Her charismatic image that in few years has been associated to important fashion brands like Chanel or Balenciaga, also because of an androgynous body that condenses together female and male elements, establishes herself as a gender fluid icon. This paper aims to examine Kristen Stewart’s image as an influencer and a fashion icon taking in consideration her official profiles on social network (like Instagram, Facebook, Twitter in particular), and those one created by her followers (on Tumblr and Pinterest for example), confirming her as a model for young generation, taking into account fashion pictures, her appearance during Tv programs, public events (like previews, runway shows), commercials and videoclip where her celebrity status has become predominant. In order to highlight the mechanism employed in shaping Kristen Stewart’s new image, the paper is going to analyze her transformation, passing to be a dark teenager, and one of the most important sex-symbol’s girlfriend, like Robert Pattinson, to a new transgressive fashion icon, appreciated for being a nonconformist and able to catalyze mass media attention. In addition to her iconic image the paper is going to highlight her as a symbol of the fluid gender process, using her celebrity status to support some social issues: like female emancipation and rights or LGBTQ cause, increasing her popularity and making of her an active celebrity.

The analysis of the so-called gender paradox represents the starting point of a theoretical-interpretative framework which, through a structuralist analysis of gender identity, intends to introduce understanding criteria capable of shedding new light on a paradox that only appears to be such. After examining the achievements of the most recent sociological literature on gender, with particular reference to the multidimensional perspectives that look at gender as a structure in the Giddensian sense, the article proposes an original interpretative framework that explores the potentialities of structuration theory, delving into the dual nature inherent in structures, through the recurrence of "cultural patterns" and "symbolic resources". The second part of the article proposes a theoretical shift that assumes gender identity as a structure, to thematize the processes of social structuring that, starting from modernity, have led to the emergence of individuation processes, then declined, in late-modern societies, into individualization and singularization. The proposed interpretative framework allows, in the concluding part of the article, both to highlight how the gender paradox is not paradoxical at all, and to read the strong polarisation of the public debate around the redefinition of possible gender identifications as an expression of the new cleavage between hyper-culture and cultural essentialism. Viewing the process of production and dramatization as intrinsically linked to aspects of the city from a post-conflict perspective, the paper examines how issues of onscreen violence and gender are worked out in this context of economic regeneration in operation since the 1998 Good Friday Agreement. The introduction of a fictional serial killer to the province after decades of violence and a fragile peace process can be seen as an attempt to normalize the region in the popular imagination. The paper firstly examines the various ways that the older geography and spatial markers of the city are incorporated into the series and characters. At times used by the director to add a sense of unresolved social tension and spectral presence of simmering violence, the city and its history provide a repressed background to the foregrounded conflict. This is examined further by framing the series as an example of third-wave Troubles drama where cultural production plays an important role in the stabilizing of this post-conflict society. Within the drama itself images of birth and the tenuous beginnings for future generations are configured around issues of gender, masculinity and unpredictable reactions to the opening up of Northern Irish society to forces of globalization. The paper reflects on how the series effectively intertwines issues of loss, grieving and fragile recovery in a place still not clear on how to deal with its recent history and the anxieties over the return of violence.

In line with critical approaches to foreign language education the paper examines the representation of diet in Italian as a foreign language textbooks in relation to gender ideologies. In order to identify and interpret ideological mechanisms that shape body politics in textbooks we employ quantitative content analysis and critical discourse analysis. To illustrate how the power of ideologically shaped sociocultural norms produces gendered body politics we introduce the Foucauldian concept of «docile bodies». This concept is furthermore interpreted from the feminist perspective, according to which female bodies are culturally subject to a more intense discipline and surveillance. The results confirm that diet discourse is characterized by a pronounced contrast between the docile bodies of women and the free of constraints bodies of men – unlike the female body that is subject to continuous surveillance and control, the male body is accepted in its natural form and furthermore embraced as a symbol of hedonism.

This paper investigates the effect of the COVID-19 crisis on the relationship between gender diversity in management and supervisory boards and the level of earnings management. The research sample comprised companies listed on the Croatian national stock exchange, and the panel data was obtained for the 2015- 2020 period to estimate regression models. Findings indicated that the presence and higher share of female directors on management boards were beneficial for curtailing earnings management but only for the financial statements disclosed during the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic. At that time, such effort was vital due to the escalation of earnings management caused by extremely pessimistic economic expectations. In the financial statements disclosed during the second year of the pandemic, the level of earnings management considerably declined, and female directors were not as effective in restraining these activities as in the first year. It could imply greater prudence of female directors when anticipating the intensity of public scrutiny regarding financial statements in a period of crisis. Gender diversity in supervisory boards proved to be an insignificant determinant of earnings management during the COVID-19 crisis.

Feminism, motherhood and the media - historically close relations in review – We start from the premise that motherhood is a social construct increasingly linked to communication processes, especially in the voluptuous offer of advice and guidelines of what is to be a mother. Taking on from this idea, this paper seeks to situate such debate. Based on the main approaches about motherhood in feminist studies, the paper presents a state-focused approach of this research in Brazil, bringing attention to three thematic-theoretical axes and to potential topics yet to be explored in media and motherhood studies.

Contributing to the debate on gender equality, the article analyses gender differences by age group. We build an index of traditionalism -- based on dimensions namely «familism», «religiosity», and «localism», by analyzing 3.923 Italian cases and 2.578 Argentinian cases collected in the context of a piece of international independent research about values, called «Identity and Nature», coordinated by Alberto Marradi. Argentina appears to have a higher index of traditionalism and much more pronounced gender differences even among young people. In Italy, there is a levelling off between women and men in the younger age groups and a greater distance with the older ones, showing that cultural change is proceeding faster, thanks to the increase in the level of women's education. Argentina is also experiencing the same phenomenon in education, however the process is slower, and so is women's emancipation. Limits of the work and future research directions are discussed in the conclusion. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

While cinema and especially the Hollywood Golden Age has constructed a mythology of its own, cinematic storytelling has also recycled heavily on classic mythologies and cultural stereotypes. The female figures have represented during the Hollywood Golden Age and in film noir in particular a special category from this perspective, being both deified and demonized, depicted as goddesses, vampires, fascinating ghosts and, above all, femmes fatales. Classic feminist studies have argued that both this depiction/representation, verbal or visual, and the intended spectator, are male. Based on a comparative case-study, the current paper discusses the manner in which what I call a cinematic witch complex is constructed through either hiding or revealing in order to conclude which is more efficient in the process of gendered myth-making.

Renal transplantation represents the best treatment for end-stage kidney disease, leading to improved quality of life and life-expectancy for most of the patients. However, gender disparities are evident both in access and in outcomes of kidney transplantation. Women on dialysis are less likely to be on the waiting list for kidney transplantation and to receive an organ from a deceased donor or living donor. Several biological and sociocultural aspects could explain this disparity. On the contrary, more women than men are living kidney donors. Italian women are the first organ donors for living transplants in Europe. The gender difference in living donation is certainly affected by different comorbidities, but such a marked trend highlights a greater predisposition to donate of women, especially in the family context. Some differences are also found in kidney outcomes, even not fully understood. Our paper analyzes the main differences in different aspects of kidney transplantation related to gender, including nutritional aspects.

The paper discusses D’Ippolito definition of Nonnus’ Dionysiaca as a set of epyllia, held together by a rather tenous narrative frame. After arguing that the influence of Ovid’s Metamorphoses (a secondary argument in D’Ippolito’s thesis) is yet to be demonstrated and quite improbable in itself, the paper discusses the specific ‘Nonnian’ nature of the epyllia in the poem and their integration within the larger narrative frame; as an example of this, the paper analyses Ares’ deception in Dionysiaca 29. If epyllion can still have a heuristic value to label the episodes of the poem, the analysis needs however to take into account the cultural and social motivations that lead Nonnus to conceive a digressive and centrifugal structure for his ambitious poem.

In the contemporary Francophone literary space, the Belgian author of Algerian origin Malika Madi is a leading figure among the exponents of second-generation migrant writing, born out of the identity and cultural debate of ‘belgitude’. It must be said that the migratory discourse is being explored by writers who were born in or moved to their parents’ host country. Among the texts on immigration from Maghreb, Madi’s work tackles, with new writing methods, issues concerning realities that clearly and objectively outline the contemporaneity of women, still subjected to prejudices that limit their right to speak. This paper will analyse Nuit d’Encre pour Farah (2000), the writer’s first novel, in which the subjective dimension of the speaker will be highlighted through the analysis of the experience lived by the novel’s protagonist, thanks to the analytical investigation of the different enunciative strategies. As for literary discourse in relation to linguistic issues, reference will be made to personal experiences that the author pours into the behaviour and stances of the protagonist, all with the aim of highlighting the importance of a biographical reading, which outlines a different discursive image of gender identity, related to a new cultural and geographical space.

This study explores linguistic and literary phenomena in the ancient Greek world, with a specific focus on the convergence of genres and role exchanges. We begin by briefly examining the emergence of the feminine gender in the reconstructed Proto-Indo-European language. Subsequently, we analyze instances of linguistic and cultural cross-contamination, shedding light on the complex dynamics of gender convergence within ancient Greek society. Our examination is framed within a socio-cultural context, drawing insights from recent developments in gender studies. This research contributes to a deeper understanding of the multifaceted interactions shaping gender roles and linguistic expressions in the ancient Greek context. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The basic prerequisite for using any language is the willingness of the speaker to follow the rules of the game. Socially defined norms of language use then tend to set the limits within which one can express oneself using this language. Whether these norms set the speaker free or whether they act as constraints in a free expression of Self, is a question that will be raised in this article. Using examples from Hindi, the paper highlights the role of such norms of language use in perpetuating gender stereotypes. Gender stereotypes get constructed as part of a broader process of social differentiation but the site of this construction is to a large extent the normal everyday discourse. A normal classroom discussion amongst university students in New Delhi thus shows how deep rooted such stereotypes are and how effectively they get perpetuated through language and linguistic norms in Indian society. The basic premise in this paper is that meanings are context-specific, they are not fixed and they get created in discourse. But since language use is one thread in social fabric, it serves as an instrument to construct and perpetuate gender stereotypes. The paper is more of an essay on issues that became obvious about gender stereotypes during two classroom discussions. It should not therefore be taken as a study into the deeper aspects of gender representation in Hindi.

This paper carries out a morphological and syntactic analysis of errors in the form of a dependent member of a nominal phrase, specifically – in gender of the congruent word. The corpus has been formed through the excerption of material from 503 assignments written by students who have taken an intensive course in Serbian as a foreign language (at level A1 and A2) at the Centre for Serbian as a Foreign Language at the Faculty of Philosophy in Novi Sad. The aims of the analysis are as follows: identification of errors, systematisation according to types, quantitative and statistical analysis, presentation of analysis results according to types of errors, frequency of occurrence and the students’ first language (since the participants are ethnically and linguistically heterogeneous). Another aim is to compare, as far as possible, the analysis outcome with results of previous analyses of errors in gender of the congruent word in language production by students with Hungarian as their first language learning Serbian as their non-native language. Since there is no category of gender in Hungarian, it is pointed out that the acquiring of this category is especially difficult for speakers of this language. The analysis has shown that: foreign students incorrectly use male gender forms most frequently (45,5%), while the incorrect use of female and neutral gender is completely equal (27,2% per gender). Considerable similarities in errors have been established between foreign students and students with Hungarian as their first language. What was previously determined as the most frequent error among students of Hungarian nationality in Serbia has now been confirmed in the case of foreign students as well, including students whose first language is Hungarian regardless of whether they live here or come from Hungary.

The aim of this paper is to examine the features of Hamlet that allow for a new understanding of the play through gendered mimesis. Long discussed as a revenge tragedy and as an exemplary model of mimes, Hamlet is in itself a deliberate and self-aware remake of earlier iterations of this tale and the revenge tragedy genre, and it has been more or less freely adapted over the centuries across multiple genres. Here two cinematic adaptations will be discussed: Ophelia (2018) and The Northman (2022), with special focus on the key female characters of Ophelia and Gertrude.

We do so by dwelling on some of the most influential voices that have contributed to the recent rediscovery of utopia as a sociological method and mobilizing force for critiquing and reacting to advanced capitalism and existing arrangements of gender relations. The article closes with some reflections on how utopian realism can enable us to overcome the fear of change in gender relations and counter the risk of "retrotopias". The paper analyses the condition of women detainee in a gender perspective. Starting from the analysis of the principle of equality in Antisubordination dimension and from the constitutional tension regarding prisons and sanctions, the paper focuses on the protection granted to mother detainee, which risks to essentialize the condition of women in prison. By framing these issues, the paper addresses the complex relationship between gender, detention, vulnerability, trying to outline the potential evolution of new form of protection. In that way, the possibility to shape a dual society, i.e. a gender sensitive society, may emerge, as to guarantee a gender sensitive detention., BioLaw Journal - Rivista di BioDiritto, N. 1 (2021)

Although women have a long history of contributing to classical scholarship, they continue to be a minority both among faculty members and scholarly authors. In this paper, I compare the proportion of women employed at Classics departments in the US, Canada, UK, and Ireland with their proportion among the authors of a sample of English journal articles. While the overall institutional gender balance is approaching parity, women continue to be underrepresented in senior positions, and progress seems to have stalled over the last ten years. In addition, my analysis of the L’Année philologique database demonstrates that while the share of articles written by women has greatly increased from 1970 to 2009, it has remained stagnant since, hovering just around the 28% mark. I hypothesise that the main reason for women’s continued underrepresentation in Classical scholarship, apart from unconscious biases, is the disproportionate share of care responsibilities shouldered by women both within and without academia. In order to improve the situation, I propose a series of interventions to be taken by journal editors and university administrators, particularly the introduction of quotas.

This paper analyses the construction of the image of oriental women in the production of commercial photography between the 1860’s and the 1880’s. It is based on an unpublished corpus: a collection of 1568 photographs purchased by the Genevan traveler Alfred Bertrand (1856-1924) between 1874 and 1883. By studying this corpus, this paper shows the differential photographic treatment existing between oriental women and oriental men. It first details the techniques used by the photographers yielding this differentiation, such as the process of decontextualization and recontextualization and the association between eroticization and typification. It then suggests some possible explanations for these differences, such as the constraints imposed on the photographers (norms of the societies of origin of the photographers, rules of the societies photographed, material conditions), and the imaginaries and ideologies of these photographers (fascination with oriental women, the supposed inferiority of oriental societies). Finally, it highlights the role of the customers of these photographers.

This paper traces the history, main themes and goals of three important Italian feminist magazines DonnaWomanFemme (DWF) (1975 to present), Via Dogana (1991-2014) and Leggendaria (1997 to present). Each of these magazines is an essential document which explains the evolution of and changes in Italian feminism, the emergence and circulation of ideas, practices and feminist theories from the 1970s to the present day, and their cultural, social, and political impact, in a national and international perspective. The analysis of these publications is structured around five thematic axes: feminist politics; feminist archives, bookshops and libraries; work, insecurity, care; body, sexuality, gender; writing, literature, literary criticism, languages.

This paper analyses French and Italian exchanges on the subjects of feminism and gender in the light of French translations of books originally published by specialised publishing houses and collections in Italy. The focus on translation firstly provides a panoramic perspective on feminism, women and gender in Italy and also assesses how specialised publishing affects cultural exchanges through the transfer of these texts. Whilst the publication of a book in a specialised house provides a framework for interpreting it or reinforces its militant message, the transfer from one language to another does not always involve homologous structures. Nonetheless, through their translation, policies, specialised publishers helped to promote the transnational circulation of feminist thought, in languages other than English, through the export of various texts. The development of a new offer—previously unpublished, translated, or rediscovered, of local origin or from elsewhere—reflects the editorial rivalry generated by the opening up of a new market from the activist core, a market which was later populated by better positioned publishers.

This paper provides a general critical overview of “gender dysphoria” as a DSM-5 diagnostic category. Gender dysphoria refers to persistent psychological distress associated with the incongruence between the assigned gender at birth and gender identity in transgender people. Previous research suggests that people with gender dysphoria have a higher risk of psychiatric comorbidity than general population samples. There is evidence that stressful events related to discrimination, stigma and social exclusion against transgender people contribute to explain, at least in part, gender dysphoria and comorbidity in this population. Furthermore, pathologizing gender dysphoria, through the disease connotations of this diagnostic label, may increase stigma and discrimination towards transgender people.
