A copy of the volume Cultura e laicità published in 1914 by Gaetano Salvemini, with Antonio Gramsci’s signature, found years ago in a paper mill, adds a few elements to our knowledge of Gramsci’s training and early political activity in Turin. In 1917, he edited a publication published by the Turin editorial office of ‘Avanti!’, entitled La Cittàfutura, in which he included excerpts from writings by Benedetto Croce and Armando Carlini, and a long quotation from Salvemini’s opening essay, entitled Cosa è la coltura, in his words ‘a little book that all young people should read’. In October 1918, 17-year-old Piero Gobetti bought a copy of Gaetano Salvemini’s book, a fundamental cultural and political reference for young Gramsci. The article discusses the strategies adopted by schools to manage scholastic daily paper of pupils who have migrated from Bosnia to Turin, Italy. It analyzes some aspects of the pupils' behavior and the way in which they perceive and live in the scholastic atmosphere. The analysis attributes the scholastic failure of these pupils to cultural factors and presumed cognitive deficit. A school has a double role, including an educational function of the formation of citizens and to prepare students for the working life. Both these aspects send back to the integration concept and presuppose the school as a total immersion space where there is a positive integration of children to structure a small society beyond the fundamental condition for learning.

This paper focuses on the representation of food bank users through the lens of Garfinkel's degradation ceremony (1956): that is, a communicative work aimed at transforming an individual's total identity into a lower social identity, by recalling moral indignation, in order to reassert social norms and reinforcing group solidarity. The aim of this paper is to investigate how representations on users might be put in place in a real life assistance context, as a food bank, and the ways in which this could be framed as a degradation ceremony (Garfinkel 1956), as a way to reassert the social norm by clearly separating the ingroup and the outgroup (Goffman 1963). For this purpose, the paper will discuss the results of a qualitative research held in two food banks in Turin, Italy, conducted using participant observation and qualitative interviews with users and volunteers. The strong processes of economic repositioning that the West experienced in the last decades of the 20th century with the transition from the industrial economy to the so-called "enrichment economy" led to the emergence of new project themes within the territorial disciplines. The decommissioning of large industrial areas is seen by the design culture as an opportunity to re-found cities through new policies and new design devices. The case of Turin is exemplary of this process in Italy. A city that symbolises Italian Fordism, from the 1980s onwards it was invested by an incremental process of large industrial areas abandonment due to the crisis of mass production. This paper aims to discuss how, after the end of the first post-Fordist cycle, decommissioned spaces accommodate not only residential or tertiary practices as in the thirty-year neoliberal era, but also new productive functions. It does so with a descriptive approach, recounting the change in Turin's production system and describing three exemplary cases of the new productive Turin: the new Pirelli in Settimo Torinese, Lavazza and the new Manufacturing Centre in Mirafiori. In this process we seem to be able to discern a paradigm shift in the design of the contemporary city, which does not deny but welcomes productive practices. This paper compares the onomastic use of newspapers and the case file of a crime committed in Turin in 1930. These sources were the inspiration for two different works by a Turin writer, Guido Ceronetti, who as a child listened to the story told by his mother and as an adult creatively returned to memories, testimonies and archival sources. The paper illustrates the results of a survey conducted in the period January-February 2023 involving the users of the Turin Public Libraries, an urban system currently affected by a significant strategic rethinking process. Through the analysis of the answers to questionnaire provided by 3,926 people, it was possible to bring to light the complexity and the multidimensionality of the act of reading and to gather interesting information on three central issues: the process that leads readers to choose the book; the libraries' role in fostering and enriching the reading experience; the complementarity between book and other form of access to narrative world, both outside and within libraries. These cognitive elements can help both to improve the collection development policies and to favor the meeting between readers and collections, also through their integrated and transmedial organization within an enriched physical and virtual bibliographic space, which stimulates and enhances the reading experience. Two articles defaming the upper class in Pinerolo, a political pamphlet against king Carlo Alberto and a life full of expedients that were often unscrupulous, led to the opening of an investigation file on Lorenzo Giribaldi in 1844. Initially, he used his passion for art and literature – as well as his ability to create lifelike depictions – to target lawyers, ladies, mayors and many other high-ranking people. Later, he used his historical and political knowledge to defame king Carlo Alberto, pope Gregory XVI and all the other sovereigns in the Italian Peninsula. The paper, through the analysis of the documents under investigation and the files from the Turin Police Department, outlines a man who was as ambiguous in his behaviour as cunning in his deeds: a hero who followed Mazzini, a progressivist and an advocate of the Italian independence on the one side, he could also be an Austrian spy and an unscrupulous fighter on the other. The recent rearrangement of an important section of the Museum of Antiquities – one of the Royal Museums of Turin, devoted to the historical collections from the ancient Mediterranean – was an opportunity to review and delve into the history of the events of Turin’s archaeological museum since its founding. The essay presents a general analysis of the history behind the Turin’s museum institution, spanning over three centuries: the paper starts in 1724, the year acknowledged as the date of birth of the Museum of Antiquities within the Royal University of Turin, it then looks at the 18th century, with the growth of the museum’s collection and structure within the University, and the 19th century, with its “spoliation” during the Napoleonic era, the subsequent transfer to Palazzo del Collegio de’ Nobili and the unification with the newly founded Egyptian Museum. In the 20th century, the two museums were separated again, which led the Museum of Antiquities to focus on the heritage of the Piedmontese territory, thus becoming a showcase of the Superintendence’s protection activities. Finally, the museum attracted renewed attention and was eventually included in the Royal Museums in 2015. The analysis of these three centuries of history is conducted through the study of archival documents and of the acquisition of the main collections of antiquities. In the process, the stories of the people connected to the museum (directors, curators, collectors) have also been explored, as well as the arrangements from the 18th century to the recent rearrangement of the rooms of the Archaeological Gallery in February 2022. This paper intends to reconstruct the climate of Turin where he lived and worked Giuseppe Levi, the particular figures which animated the subalpine universities in the fascist period, the fruitful interaction between Jewish and anti-fascist world. The aim of this contribution is to analyze the work experiences of 50 precarious young people, interviewed in a city of Northern Italy, Turin, and in a city of the South, Catania. The subjective points of view, the definitions, the perceptions and the strategies of the interviewees are investigated in relation to the transition to adulthood, phase of the life course (Elder 1995) that they are experiencing in a historical period and in societies marked by work precariousness as a state of generalized and permanent insecurity (Bourdieu 1998), and paying attention to the role of the territorial context. How can living in Turin and Catania change the interpretation that the young individuals give of their own precariousness, the "navigation" strategies of it and the possible "exit strategies" and where instead transversal similarities between the young people interviewed in the two cities emerge? The paper presents the main findings of an exploratory research focused on Fiat workers living on cassa integrazione (redundancy payment) in Turin. The large factory manual workers who are the subjects of in-depth interviews are unskilled or low-skilled older workers with permanent contracts and, at the same time, men with family responsibilities. Today these workers feel exposed to new risks of impoverishment and long-term unemployment, due to the economic crises, and perceive a great insecurity regarding their future. Cassa integrazione has serious economic consequences for family living conditions: the analysis reveals situations of suffering and economic deprivation. While sociological research has mostly focused on economic vulnerability resulting from atypical employment, this paper investigates experiences of vulnerability of the so-called «insiders» as well-protected workers, without a background of job changing, recurrent unemployment and short-terms contracts, and explores their coping strategies, thus pointing to the need for a renewed interest in the relationship between poverty and work. In current theoretical and policy debate concerning urban regeneration in Europe, the neighbourhood has re-emerged as an important setting. This paper addresses the theme of urban regeneration drawing on a research study about a specific «area and people-based» program, realized in two neighbourhoods in Turin. In these selected areas some estates, originally built to host athletes and journalists during the Olympic Winter Games (2006), were converted into social housing units meant to promote social mix among less and more well off inhabitants of the area. The aim of the study is to gain a better insight into the development and the outcome of the program. Evidence is offered from a survey on orientations and behaviours concerning social relationships in one of the two neighbourhoods, after two years from the intervention. The core question of the paper is whether the effect of cohesion and cooperation among people living in the same area, but belonging to different social classes, has taken place as expected. The paper explores factors and mechanisms explaining the partial failure of this social and urban experiment, focusing on the experience of daily inclusion/exclusion from a specific shared place. The Olympic legacy, whether temporary or transitory, can manifest itself before, during or after the Games. It can quickly disappear after the event if efforts are not made to keep it alive through, for example, cultural programming, new environmental legislation, public awareness programming or new, more comprehensive applications. The study has the objective of recounting the Olympic legacy of the Torino 2006 Games through the results of the qualitative interviews held with the main actors of the event. In recent years, the Olympic legacy and the planning of the Olympic legacy have become increasingly important in the choice of host cities. The importance has allowed many cities, such as London, Sydney, and Tokyo, to develop an entity in charge of planning and managing the post-Olympic legacy. The intangible possibility of training and involving new profiles in the territory is fundamental to managing the Olympic structures in the post-Olympic period. The professionalism of resources, the definition of objectives, management tools and human resources are some of the critical elements for the organisation of a working team that can promote the post-Olympic transformation of host cities. The promotion of an Olympic city and an urban model to pursue can catalyse supra-local transformations that support the intangible knowledge of citizenship. The social transformations through the promotion of the city and its image can become a "Know-How" of the organising committee which, in the post-Olympic phase, will support the future strategies of the city regarding the organisation and planning of the mega-event. The One Health approach emphasises the need to tackle the challenges of human, animal and ecosystem health using a more integrated approach. Since the mid-2000s and even more since the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic, public health scholars and policy makers have been paying an increasing attention to the One Health approach. The authors retrace the different reconstructions on the origins and meanings of the One Health approach with the use of an interdisciplinary case study jointly conducted by sociologists and veterinary epidemiologists in the context of dairy cattle farms located in the provinces of Turin and Cuneo. In the context of the "risk society" theorised by Ulrich Beck, the division of labour between science, politics and economics breaks apart and has to be renegotiated. In such a perspective, One Health appears as a utopia of science structured as a field of research and interdisciplinary intervention held together by a common project of the future. Besides, One Health is a science of utopia aimed at avoiding the disaster with the same tools that scientists use to foresee the possibility of it happening in the future. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article illustrates a case study from an ongoing research project on the statues and sculptural fragments from Tebtynis, discovered by Carlo Anti during the 1930-1936 excavation campaigns, in the temple dedicated to the god Soknebtynis. Specifically, it examines a non-royal statue which one of the authors has recently identified as Turin, Museo Egizio S. 19400+S. 19400/1. The authors combine a study of relevant archival records currently kept in Padua and Venice, Italy, with the virtual reconstruction of the fragment of the head and the stylistic analysis of the statue in order to shed light on the sculpture and retrace its post-excavation history. This article contributes to the debate on digital platforms by focusing on the analysis of the micro level, in order to understand the experiences of food delivery riders with respect to macro-changes in the labour market. The reflection investigates the relationship between structural transformations and subjective experiences in the organizational model of digital platforms. The contribution is part of a wider research started in Turin (Italy) in 2016 and currently ongoing, conceived and carried out embracing what Alquati (1993) defined ‘co-research’. The article underlines the centrality of conflicting practices by workers. The findings highlight among the triggering causes of antagonism towards management, the conflicts between riders and companies, the contradiction between income and health, the tensions between autonomy and control. The research shows that what is at stake in the conflictual practices should not be understood as concerning merely regulatory issues, but has to do with interpretative and political issues. The research draws on a unique chance of comparison across time: the case of Turin (Italy) 1979-2003. In both years time use surveys have been carried out, each including children aged 7-13. The conditions of the urban young population can be seen as a mirror of the social change in a city moving from a still mainly industrial economy to a post-industrial one. As a consequence, today children live in different family context with more educated parents, more female employment and more divorce rate. Some results about trends in children's patterns of time use are quite striking: TV watching for example one of the most debated forms of leisure despite popular fears, did not increased at all; social life instead, measured as time spent with friends (a more reliable measure than «time spent in social activities» which are not always unambiguously defined) dramatically decreased by 50%. This is likely to be linked with the growing institutionalisation of children in 2003. Today young people spend more time than in the past in institutionalised context such as school and extracurricular activities (sport training, music lessons etc.): time spent at school rose by 31% and time spent doing sports (including training courses above all) increased by 77% on average.
