Abstract

The article discusses evidence from literature, inscriptions, and papyri of women practicing medicine in the Hellenistic world, as physicians rather than as midwives. Among other topics addressed are previous scholarship on the subject, an overview of the living conditions of women during the Hellenistic period and how they changed during that time, and the role of women doctors.
