This contribution addresses the debate that took place in Italy at the beginning of the Eighties between the “sexual difference theory” (“pensiero della differenza”) and lesbofeminism, when the Libreria delle Donne in Milan published the issue of «Sottosopra» also known as “Sottosopra verde” establishing thus the hegemony of the “pensiero della differenza” within Italian feminism. The article reconstructs the differentialist position on lesbianism since its origins in the early Seventies and explores the criticism expressed by lesbofeminists who saw in the Milan proposal a new cancellation of lesbianism and articulated in response a wider stance joining the international debates about the clash between differentialist and materialist feminism.
