Physics ,Particle physics ,General Theoretical Physics - Abstract

In this thesis the analysis on double charmonium production at the energy of the $\Upsilon$(4S), with the \babar~data is documented. The aim of this analysis is to understand the mechanism of production of double charmonium states fro \ee annihilation, in particular after the discrepancies which at the beginning of these studies appeared. With successive studies, these discrepancies have been almost solved. This analysis was already performed by \babar~ collaboration \cite{shuwei}, and in this thesis we want to update that work, with a luminosity early four times higher (468 $fb^{1}$. In the mean time, also Belle collaboration published on this analysis \cite{bellecccc}, obtaining results compatible with \babar~ and finding out a new charmonium state, named X(3940). We aim here also to confirm this state. This thesis is composed by five chapters. Chapter I is an introduction to charmonium spectroscopy, with a description of the NRQCD, which the theorethical framework of this analysi, then the potential models that have been developed to describe the mass spectrum. The theories related to the double charmonium production mechanisms are presented in Chapter II: in particular the calculation of the cross section and the dicrepancies between theory and experiment. Then in Chapter III the \babar~detector is described. In Chapter IV there is a description on how has been performed the analysis: the analysis strategy, selection and cut optimization, and validation of the fit are documented, before the unblind of the interested region. In chapter V we give the final results, after unblind.

We discuss a grand unified model based on SUSY SU(5) in extra dimensions and on the flavour group A4xU(1) which, besides reproducing tri-bimaximal mixing for neutrinos with the accuracy required by the data, also leads to a natural description of the observed pattern of quark masses and mixings., 19 pages

In the Top-down scenarios, the decay of super-heavy particles (m~10^{12-16}GeV), situated in dark-matter halos not very far from our Galaxy, can explain the ultra-high-energy (UHE) cosmic-ray spectrum beyond the Griesen-Zatasepin-Kuzmin cut-off. In the MSSM, a major component of the UHE cosmic-ray flux at PeV-EeV energies could be given by the lightest neutralino \chi, that is the lightest stable supersymmetric particle. Then, the signal of UHE \chi's on earth might emerge over the interactions of a comparable neutrino component. We compute the event rates for the resonant production of "right" selectrons and "right" squarks in mSUGRA, when UHE neutralinos of energy larger than 10^5 GeV scatter off electrons and quarks in an earth-based detector like IceCube. When the resonant channel dominates in the total \chi-e,\chi-q scattering cross section, the only model parameters affecting the corresponding visible signal rates turn out to be the physical masses of the resonant right-scalar and of the lightest neutralino. We compare the expected number of supersymmetric events with the rates corresponding to the expected Glashow W resonance and to the continuum UHE \nu-N scattering for realistic power-law spectra. We find that the event rate in the leptonic selectron channel is particularly promising, and can reach a few tens for a one-year exposure in IceCube. Finally, we note that UHE neutralinos at much higher energies (up to hundreds ZeV) may produce sneutrino resonances by scattering off relic neutrinos in the Local Group hot dark halo. The consequent \tilde{\nu}-burst into hadronic final states could mimic Z-burst events, although with quite smaller conversion efficiency., Comment: 23 pages, 4 figures; one reference added

DELPHI data collected at centre-of-mass energies up to 208 GeV have been analysed to search for charginos, neutralinos and sfermions in the framework of the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM) with R-parity conservation. No evidence for a signal was found in any of the channels. The results of each search were used to derive limits on production cross-sections and particle masses. In addition, the combined result of all searches excludes regions in the parameter space of the constrained MSSM, leading to limits on the mass of the Lightest Supersymmetric Particle and other supersymmetric particles., 103 pages, 44 figures, Accepted by Eur. We report on the result for the charm quark mass as obtained from our lattice QCD computation in the quenched approximation. Our result in the MSbar scheme is m_c(m_c)=1.26(4)(12) GeV., 12 pages, 1 PostScript figure (version to appear in Phys.Lett.B)

The construction and operation of silicon ring counters designed to measure multiplicity and pseudorapidity distributions of charged tracks in a high multiplicity environment are described. The detectors operated successfully in the HELIOS experiment during the CERN-SPS relativistic ion runs with 16 O projectiles in 1986 and with 32 S in 1987. They also provided a multiplicity trigger for the experiment.
