Abstract University between Research and Co-Planning: The Application of the Triple Helix Extended Model to Local Action Groups The University is a strategic actor for territorial development in the cultural, social and economic fields, showing the integration of research, teaching and third mission activities for the co-construction of public goods and the improvement of the well-being of inhabitants. The paper presents the co-design process started by the geographers of the Imago Mundi Lab at the University of Bergamo to support the definition of the Local Development Strategy 2023-2027 of the Local Action Group (LAG) Colline Bergamasche. Assuming a Triple Helix approach, a socio-territorial study was carried out in preparation for a participatory process, in which public bodies, private enterprises, non-profit associations and inhabitants were involved in order to define strategic actions for the future, laying the foundations for a new shared local governance.

The new media technology tools and co-production processes used in the ongoing POR FESR Mobiquity – Shared Solutions for Safe and Inclusive Mobility project aim to increase the complexity of reading the city, identifying those who live the territory the interlocutor to build shared projects and improve the accessibility of urban services. The project investigates the theme of public transport accessible to all as an element of redesigning the city; through the application of transdisciplinary processes in the multicity, the project investigation is constructed through the relationship of quantitative and qualitative, objective and subjective data, in a decision-making ecosystem involving Administrations, the University, public transport companies and citizens, for the transition to the Co(mplex)city. Informal land and building occupations form a significant part of Southern urbanism, emerging as central features of city-making in places defined by colonial histories and dispossession. They transgress normalised property and legal regimes and thereby open the possibility for alternative relations connected to shared practices of use and being in common. Drawing on long-term engaged research in Bogotá, Colombia and Cape Town, South Africa, this paper traces the origins and dynamic trajectories of two occupations, paying particular attention to the ways occupiers engage state logics transversally to assemble material infrastructures and advance citizenship claims. In comparing these situated practices relationally, we identify three modalities of transversal engagement that shape their presents and futures: 1) direct co-design; 2) aspirational co-design, and 3) anticipatory counter-design. Whilst the potentiality and outcomes of these are uncertain, we argue they are important contributors to contesting racialised regimes of dispossession and reimagining more just and equitable urban futures.

The Good Life explored in the famous book of the same name by architect Iñaki Ábalos can be compared to the “good life” questioned by philosopher Judith Butler. Her question of who has a right to a good life is comparable to the question of who belongs to the “together” propagated by the New European Bauhaus.According to Butler, a “good life” cannot be separated from “togetherness”, the relationship with others, but also from resistance to a bad life. Resistance consists of opposing the differential distribution of the value of life and precariousness, trying to create conditions in which human interdependence and vulnerability become livable.The paper addresses two conditions under which vulnerability and interdependence become unbearable, depending on the role that architecture also assigns to bodies and determines their right to be present in public and private spaces. In this respect, “together” can be a tool of critical resistance for architecture.

The study investigates benefits, criticalities and challenges of the co-design of a training programme based on learning outcomes and the transferability of the strategy to other educational contexts, through the analysis of the perceptions of the Professors involved in the design of the course for "Professional Socio- pedagogical educator" at the University of Florence. Following the analysis of the interviews with Professors on the collaborative design of this curriculum, some results align with previous studies while allowing to explore opportunities to advance knowledge on the subject. This design approach is not without its challenges, in particular with regard to the lexical divergence of the disciplines and the difficulty of negotiating knowledge within shared practices. Furthermore, the focus on the learning outcomes, also promoted through their declinations into different didactic formats, would appear relevant in conjunction with an approach centred on learners. Finally, the transferability of the practice appears to be linked to elements of the organization and structure of the academic context, which should facilitate the effort necessary to deploy the resources that co-design implies in its implementation.

The application of digital technologies for the accessibility of cultural heritage sites is an emerging area of research that presents relevant design challenges. In this regard, the potential of virtual reality (VR) is increasingly highlighted to guarantee the universal right to enjoy cultural heritage to visitors with different accessibility needs. This study provides a contribution to advance knowledge and practice in this area by presenting the design process and findings of a research project aimed to develop a compensatory solution through VR for improving the accessibility of cultural heritage sites for visitors with mobility impairments. For this research, the Scenario-Based Design method (SBD) is applied within a User-Centered Design approach to identify user requirements of the VR interface. Based on this method, different personas and corresponding scenarios are designed to represent the needs, motivations and behaviors of the main user groups of the compensatory technological solution. Further, the SBD is used in the prototyping phase as a tool for co-design activity, which involved users with specific accessibility needs, designers and other stakeholders to identify the requirements of the VR application. The paper presents the findings of the co-design relating to the functional and experiential requirements and discusses the methodological and practical implications to support the use of this approach for the development of digital solutions for cultural heritage accessibility

The article presents the results of a study aimed at investigating the engagement networks activated in the planning process of the territories affected by the 2016 earthquake in the Marche region. The research objective is to reflect on communication strategies implemented by a selection of municipal administrations to promote transparency and information sharing and, at the same time, citizen participation in design and planning processes. The results highlight the emergence of an all-of-society engagement approach, to experiment and co-create with a renewed relationship between institutions, science, and local communities.

A questão da sustentabilidade é apresentada hoje como um dos principais desafios da sociedade hipermoderna. Designers de moda e educadores têm a oportunidade de adotar um paradigma de design de moda, que se afasta das estruturas clássicas da moda rápida e pode guiá-los para um novo conceito de moda ética e sustentável. A partir dessa abor-dagem, é possível trabalhar com critérios de projeto, fabricação e consumo; mas também reativar a longevidade das roupas, melhorando a experiência do usuário e a consideração do desperdício de moda. Nossa pesquisa é baseada no conceito de moda lenta e na aplicação de métodos de co-design em salas de aula, para incentivar o desenvolvimento de práticas sustentáveis e novos métodos de colaboração na educação, envolvendo, no processo de geração e desenvolvimento, designers, pesquisadores, artesãos, diferentes grupos sociais e organizações não-governamentais.A abordagem metodológica qualitativa foi empregada a partir da prática do design par-ticipativo em comunidades offline, onde várias estratégias de design para a sustentabilidade foram implementadas, como técnicas de pirataria, decodificação e recodificação de roupas de segunda mão, todas baseadas em critérios de otimização e melhoria da qualidade das peças de vestuário.A amostra incluiu 30 participantes divididos em 5 grupos, cujos membros adotaram di-ferentes papéis e ações dentro dos grupos. Também foram utilizados vários instrumentos de coleta de dados que mediram os níveis de conscientização e os impactos positivos sustentá-veis nos participantes do workshop.

The pandemic crisis has definitively exposed the limits of a development model that the crisis of the new millennium had already amply demonstrated. Urban commerce has been heavily affected by the polycrisis, requiring innovative solutions to overcome it. In Saint-Germain-en-Laye (SGL), the problem was addressed through a relaunch project aimed at transforming the city centre of SGL into an open-air urban market through the pedestrianisation of selected areas and encouraging multimodality and multifunctionality of spaces and services assisted by digital technologies. The goal was pursued by leveraging the sense of community of the inhabitants and the ability to interpret their needs by a team made up of planners and designers from the municipal administration of Saint Germain-en-Laye and researchers in several different disciplines from the Politecnico di Milano. Overall, the experience was configured as a co-design activity aimed at experimenting with new ways of urban resilience for citizens and business keepers particularly affected by the effects of the pandemic.

Contemporary society is changing by reason of technical, technological and social processes that are evolving faster than ever before. Thinking and designing with a Human Centered Design (HCD) approach means expanding the catchment area of the possible users of our product or service without losing specificity and relevance in terms of performance. It is necessary to conceive spaces, services and products that are able to adapt to the variable characteristics of the context, and which can dynamically respond to needs that vary in time for the same user base. The HC project assumes that an organized multidisciplinary approach has to be applied to identify a suitable, effective and articulated response for this scenario. The paper investigates application tools that can be useful to pursue the objectives of complex interdisciplinary projects. Some national and international researches carried out by the project team, supporting and using a HCD methodology will be specifically described.

The design theory of the 21st century has mostly contributed to highlighting the antagonistic co-existence of capitalism and socio-environmental emergencies. However, it has only marginally investigated the role that fashion designers can play in this context. This article aims to contribute to the theoretical debate on the sustainable future of fashion and design, discussing the implications that the three key concepts of strategic autonomy, developed by Hal Foster, co-design, theorised by Ezio Manzini, and future, defined by Tony Fry, can have on the ability of fashion designers to modify the system, trigger a change, direct or manage it.

Geodesign is a set of methods to shared construction of alternative futures to a territory. Among the existing methods, Steinitz’s framework proposes analytical and propositional steps. In analytical step the goal is to compose maps identifying vulnerabilities and attractiveness of the area. In propositional step the users design diagrams of projects and policies to the place to be negotiated between the participants. To analyze the diagrams could help support the negotiations. The study presents the construction of methods, using ETL Tools, to describe the characteristics of the diagrams, mainly the locational and topological similarities. The similarities can be used to indentify projects or policies that are equivalent, complementary or conflicting, helping the negotiation process, reducing the time spent in unnecessary discussions.DOI: https://doi.org/10.20365/disegnarecon.20.2018.15

The research addresses the theme of the enhancement of two devotional cultural sites according to the principles of Responsible Research Innovation (RRI). The methodology provides for the involvement of various designers and local stakeholders, and is supported by digital technologies, both to speed up communication between those within the design process and to facilitate envisioning possible solutions by non-professional individuals. The aim is to enable new educational uses of the cultural heritage of the two historical-devotional sites, which are the focus of enhancement in a circular cognitive process based on collective construction of opportunities. This thesis project, whose speaker was Prof. Francesca Tosi (Unifi), aims to involve the way makers design applied to a bicycle brand business.

In the last decade, there has been a rapid development of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT), which provide for an active involvement by citizens in the care and maintenance of public space. In particular, digital participatory platforms (DPPs) have become increasingly important in fostering dialogue and interaction between citizens and the Public Administration. The contribution focuses on the issue of public space and its governance, critically analyzing some best practices of European DPPs, from the point of view of their impact and degree of success, in order to bring out the objectives, the processes and co-design actions, the technologies they use and the specificities that make them innovative pilot projects at international level.

This article provides insights on the urban regeneration project conduced in the densely populated centre of the “Costanzo Ciano” neighbourhood of Piacenza. Financed by MIBAC - Ministry of Heritage and Culture through the Creative Living Lab programme, the project is configured as a participatory urban regeneration action (Placemaking) aimed at testing various possible solutions for a more structured future renewal intervention. The organisational formula adopted distinguishes through the active involvement of the inhabitants at both the design and realisation stages. The output consists in the product to which the inhabitants have contributed but also, and most importantly, in the social relationships which have been formed, through which, the functional plan for the future renewal intervention has been laid out. The experience coherently follows the URBACT method principles while its cultural and practical implications refer to both the “dilemmas” theme1 posed by the current European debate regarding the strategic development of public spaces and the Placemaking tool in the Living Labs 2.0 formula2, for an innovative governance straddling theory and practice.

The aims of this issue is a reflection on the concept of user in design projects and its place in design processes. Beyond any lexical choice, questioning the multiple identities of users means considering them according to the contexts and approaches: users, individuals, persons, citizens, beneficiaries, stakeholders, actors, subjects, agents, clients, patients, consumers, etc. Each definition consists in a conceptual posture that both includes and constructs an anthropological vision of the subjects concerned as well as the consequent practices.

Our thought on innovation starts from the dichotomy between the strong and the light design’s components: on the one hand opposed, on the other complementary. Hard is the process based on the consumerist model, Soft is more sustainable. Hard is the dimension of possession, Soft is that of access and sharing. Hard is the top-down process and Soft is the bottom-up process that values social innovation. The project tools are not records to be applied. They must adapt, be customized to the needs expressed by the people who are activating themselves in the structuring of answers. The role of designers today is to face our time challenges, to which the models used in the last century are unable to respond. It is to answer to the world’s change by performing the change in the project.

This paper is based on research conducted by Creative Industries Lab of Politecnico di Milano for creating the new brand image and communication strategy for Fondazione Cariplo. A Co-Design approach has involved both internal and external stakeholders in visually defining a shared future identity for rebranding this significant foundation to the public. The research results have revealed that the co-creation process has not only generated the expected objectives, but also raised a cultural change towards innovation inside the organization itself. Therefore, this experience has opened a new research realm for applying design methods and tools in organizations.

When language is a barrier to constructing knowledge, visualising and prototyping can facilitate communication internally with one’s self, externally with others, and speculatively with the future. The cognitive effects of the making process help participants express tacit knowledge, and surface assumptions that may have otherwise gone unnoticed and unchallenged. Within design thinking workshops, the collaborative act of hands-on making helps mediate power dynamics and contributes to social learning. As ideas are explored, prototyping supports a speculative discussion about possible and preferable futures. This collaborative process of shared meaning-making helps give agency to previously excluded voices, such as youth and minorities, and has implications for socially inclusive practices. These ideas are discussed and illustrated verbally and visually.

The renewed interest for under used sites of historical city centres is addressing a change in design paradigms on existing buildings involving local communities in the process from the very beginning. The paper reports a recent cooperation, named “Anteprima Lab”, between the Department of Architecture (DA) of University of Bologna, the City of Bologna and Urban Center. The action is intended as an enabler of initiatives aimed at enhancing those places assumed as common goods by local communities. The pilot defined the functional and spatial features of an innovative participated environment that follows the socio-political trends characterizing the modern age of Bologna.

Este artigo explora as dimensões tangíveis e intangíveis da relação entre o mobiliário urbano, o espaço público e o seu utilizador. Procurou-se discutir esta relação através de uma reflexão sobre os conceitos e as características fundamentais no desenvolvimento de projectos interdisciplinares de design de mobiliário urbano. Abordou-se a importância dos elementos de mobiliário urbano na valorização e percepção da qualidade do espaço público e as várias dimensões subjacentes a estes artefactos. Também foi tratado o conceito de interdisciplinaridade integrando-o dentro da visão do co-design e como as novas formas de participação pública estão a alterar as práticas do design. Pretendeu-se compreender todo o potencial de inovação derivado de uma abordagem interdisciplinar ao design de mobiliário urbano e quais as implicações dessa acção.

This article discusses the role that co-design could take in the planning and implementation of urban public spaces and its importance in the creative process as a dimension of the project itself. It is performed a reflection on co-design and urban public space concepts, through which, this paper seeks to problematize these issues. It is presented various actions by citizen activists concretely engaged in shaping the spatial, material, and social aspects of their cities, as well as participatory projects as strategic tools for urban development. The co-design emerges as a participatory approach that allows establishing communication between experts and non-experts and allows the intervention, participation and involvement of all stakeholders regardless their professional, social or cultural knowledge and practice.
