We report the lightfastness of deuterated and undeuterated ultraviolet absorbers (UVAs). The durability of following species: 2-phenylpyridine (1H, 1D); 2,2'-bipyridine (2H, 2D); benzophenone (3H, 3D); phenylbenzoate (4H, 4D); 2-(2-benzotriazolyl)-p-cresol (5H, 5D) has been evaluated under UV light (254 or 355 nm) irradiation by means of UV-vis photoabsorption spectrometry. While all these compounds show a low photoreaction quantum yield ( 10
-6 to 10-4 ), each deuterium labeled substance has a 1.2-1.5 times longer lifetime compared to the unlabeled one. Lightfastness of UVAs can be increased by deuteration through a positive isotope effect without changing its photo absorption wavelength and molecular extinction coefficient.
