Abstract

オーロラX線イベントの2次元イメージを得ることと，30keVから778keVの領域でエネルギースペクトルを得ることを目的として，大気球を編隊飛行させ観測を行うバルーンクラスター計画の下に，2003年1月13日にPPB8号機とPPB10号機の2機が南極の昭和基地より放球された。両機は大気深さ9－12g/cm2を保ち，磁気緯度55°.5－66°.4の範囲を飛翔し南極大陸を半周した。両機はフライト中に多くのオーロラX線イベントを観測した。特に，1月22日から1月25日には，数例のイベントが両機で同じ時間帯に観測されている。2003年1月23日には，始めに10号機，218sec.の間隔をあけて8号機でイベントが観測された。このとき8号機は10号機の西650kmに位置していた。このことはオーロラX線源が速さ約3.0km/sec.で西に向かって移動していたことを示唆している。本論文では同じ時間帯に観測された，オーロラX線イベントについてその描像を述べる。, In order to make the two-dimensional image for auroral X-rays and to obtain the energy spectrum of aurora with energy range from 30 keV to 778 keV, the Polar Patrol Balloons No8 and No10 (PPB#8 and PPB#10) were launched in rapid succession to form a cluster of balloons during their flight on Jan. 13, 2003 from Syowa Station. They drifted westward 0.5 circumpolar rounds over Antarctica, covering 9－12 g/cm2 atmospheric depth and 55.5 deg －66.4 deg geomagnetic latitude. From Jan. 22 to 25, 2003, several auroral events were detected by PPB#8 and PPB#10 at the same time. On Jan. 23, 2003, PPB#10 and PPB#8 observed auroral X-ray events in succession. PPB#8 which was located about 650 km west from PPB#10 observed auroral X-ray event after PPB#10 with delay time 218 sec. It is suggested that the auroral X-ray source region moved from east to west with speed of about 3.0 km/s. 28. [Usefulness of the Principle of Selective Excitation Technique Non-electrocardiogramgated 3D-TOF Method in Lower-extremity MRA Using a Whole-body Coil].

Abstract

Purpose: Generally, non-contrast, lower-extremity, magnetic resonance angiography (MRA) uses electrocardiography; thus, examination is difficult in patients who exhibit arrhythmia. However, the use of electrocardiography can be avoided by using the selective excitation technique in non-electrocardiogram-gated three-dimensional time-of-flight (TOF) (pNon-Gate) MRA. Therefore, patients who exhibit arrhythmia can be examined with pNon-Gate MRA. The purpose of this study was to assess the usefulness of pNon-Gate MRA by using a whole-body coil., Methods: Images acquired using pNon-Gate MRA were compared with images acquired using electrocardiogram-gated two-dimensional TOF (Gate) MRA. Comparisons comprised visual evaluation, as well as comparisons of contrast-to-noise ratio and imaging time., Results: In visual evaluation of the pelvic region, Gate MRA showed better results than pNon-Gate MRA. In terms of contrast-to-noise ratio, there were no significant differences in either region. Imaging time showed no significant differences between the two methods. However, it exceeded 30 minutes frequently for Gate MRA, but rarely for pNon-Gate MRA., Conclusions: pNon-Gate MRA is useful in patients with frequent arrhythmia and in those with difficulty in maintaining long-term postures. By using a whole-body coil, pNon-Gate MRA enables easier patient positioning and setting. Therefore, pNon-Gate MRA can be used in routine examinations.

Abstract

Respiration-deficient (petite) mutation is caused by hereditary impairment in mitochondrial functions. Yeasts have been grouped into "petite-positive" and "petite-negative" yeasts. Candida albicans has been regarded as a member of the petite-negative yeasts in which the respiration deficiency cannot be easily induced. We have succeeded in inducing the petite mutation in C. albicans by culturing in the presence of a chemical mutagen, acriflavine, at an elevated temperature. In the present review, we describe the cell biology of C. albicans petite mutants on the basis of experiments performed by our research group: namely, on respiratory activity and cytochrome composition, fine structures of cells and mitochondria, mitochondrial DNA structure, pathogenicity, oxidative stress sensitivity, generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and the roles of ROS in antifungal actions. We discuss also the usefulness of petite mutants in Candida research.
