The depth profile of the chemical state of tin in the natural oxide layer formed on zircaloy-4 has been investigated by angle-resolved X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). It was found that the metallic tin exists in the natural oxide layer.

The ageing behavior of Al-4% Cu alloy that contained the small quantities (0--0.35%) of the third elements In or Cd, is investigated more minutely. The effects of the third elements are very similar to that of the Sn which was studied previausly; the natural ageing is depressed but the rate of artificial ageing is extremely accelerated. But the order of the effect is different to each element for the hardness, temperature and concentraion respectively. For example the saturated concentration of Cd element to the binary alloy most effectively is 0.1% but In is 0.24 %. In these points this work is most different from previous references. Still more the agehardening curves of these alloies are examined in detail., Al-Cu合金の時効性に最も顕著な影響を及ぼす微量元素としてSn，In及びCdの三元素が知られている。特にこれ等の第三添加元素がAl-4%Cu合金の常温時効性を抑制し，焼戻時効性を著るしく促進する現象については既に小野，幸田両博士によって見出だされ，最近はH.K.Hardyにより相当詳細に研究されその機構に迄言及している。しかしこれ等の現象について決定的な説明は末だなされて居らない。而して従来の研究はその添加量を0.05%程度に一定として居り又焼入温度なども三元素とも一定として取扱って居る。著者は従来これ等の合金の時効現象ならびに状態図などにつき研究して居るのであるが，これ等の三元素にはそれぞれ独自の焼入温度並びに時効温度のあることを知った。即ちこれ等元素のそれぞれについての独自の挙動を明かにすることも極めて重要な事であると思い本実験を行った。Sn元素については既に研究し，相当詳細にその挙動を知ったので今回はIn及びCdについての結果を報告する。
