顎放線菌症の治療中に播種性血管内凝固症候群(Disseminated Intravascular Coagulation：DIC)および上部消化管出血を併発した症例を報告する. 患者は89歳女性. 2021年10月中旬に左側下顎8部歯肉の排膿および左側頬部腫脹のため当科を紹介受診した. 初診時, 著しい開口障害と左側頬部腫脹および疼痛を認め, 左側下顎8番智歯周囲炎および左側頬部蜂窩織炎と診断した. その後, 切開排膿時に採取した膿の細菌検査にてActinomyces meyeriおよびその菌塊が検出されたため, 顎放線菌症と最終診断した. 処置および経過：初診日に入院し, 入院3日目の血液検査にて血小板数の低値およびFDP, アンチトロンビン, TATの高値を認め, 日本血栓止血学会の定める診断基準より感染症型DICと診断した. 入院4日目に口腔外切開排膿術およびメロペネム投与を開始し，入院11日目に感染症型DICからの離脱を認めた. また入院9日目より顎放線菌症に対しスルバシリン3.0 g /日を15日間静脈内投与し左側頬部腫脹の軽減を認めていたが, 入院18日目に吐血と著しい貧血を認め内視鏡検査にて上部消化管出血と診断しクリッピングおよび焼灼止血を行い止血した. その後全身状態および開口障害と左側頬部腫脹の改善を認めたため入院43日目に軽快退院となった., Actinomycosis of the jaw, which is slightly rare disease at the oral and maxillofacial region, progress to the disseminated intravascular coagulation irregularly. Here, we report a rare case of the actinomycosis of the jaw complicated with disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC) accompanied by intestinal hemorrhage. The patient was an 89-years-old woman who had the swelling of the left buccal region and lower-left mandibular gingiva. Above the findings of imaging and bacteriological examination, diagnosis of the actinomycosis of the jaw was made. During antibacterial treatment, her general condition deteriorated rapidly, and the blood test results met the diagnostic criteria of DIC. Moreover, the hematemesis and significant anemia developed during the intensive care, and endoscopy findings showed the hemorrhage at the greater curvature of stomach. Watchful general care should be needed during treatment actinomycosis of the jaw, in particular, affect the elderly.

当院では 2010年7月からコンピューターを用いたインシデント報告システムを導入し,職員が匿名でインシデントを報告できる体制となっている.本体制運用開始後10年間に当科で報告されたインシデントレポート55件を患者影響レベルに従って8段階に分類した.レベル0は6件(10.9%),レベル1は14件 (25.5%),レベル2は13件(23.6%),レベル 3a は10件(18.2%),レベル3bは8件(14.5%),レベル4aは0件(0%),レベ4bは3件(5.4%),レベ5は1 件(1.8%)であった.当科におけるレベル別報告件数の比率は，重大なアクシデントと中等度のエラーと300のヒヤリ・ハットの比率が1：29：300であるというハインリッヒの法則に則っていなかった.しかし当科では2010年から2020年にかけてヒヤリ・ハット報告数は増加しているため,インシデントを報告する習慣が身につきつつあると考えられた.今後,より積極的に報告を行うように，職員へのさらなる啓蒙活動が医療事故の防止のために重要であると考えられた., In July 2010,we introduced a computerized incident reporting system, which allows staff to report incidents anonymously. The 55 incidents reported in our department during the first 10 years of operation of this system were classified into 8 levels according to the patient impact level. Level 0 was 6 incidents (10.9%),level 1 was 14 incidents (25.5%),level 2 was 13 incidents (23.6%),level 3a was 10 incidents (18.2%),level 3b was 8 incidents (14.5%),level 4a was 0 incidents (0%),level 4b was 3 incidents (5.4%),and level 5 was 1 incident (1.8%).The ratio of the number of reports by level in our department did not follow Heinrich's law, which states that the ratio of serious incidents to moderate errors and 300 near-misses is 1:29:300.However,the number of Hiyari-Hatto reports increased from 2010 to 2020 in our department, suggesting that the habit of reporting incidents is becoming more common. In the future, it will be important to educate the staff to report more actively in order to prevent medical accidents.

多形腺腫は唾液腺腫瘍の中で最も発生頻度が高い腫瘍である. 小唾液腺にも発生する多形腺腫の中であるが, 口唇に発生することはまれである. 今回われわれは口唇腺に発生した多形腺腫の1例を経験したので文献的考察を加えて報告する. 患者は52歳女性で, 上唇の腫瘤精査目的に当院皮膚科を受診し, 上唇良性腫瘍と診断され, 当科へ紹介され受診した. 左側上唇粘膜下に11×9 mm大の弾性硬, 可動性良好な腫瘤を認め, 全身麻酔下に摘出術を施行した. 腫瘍は被膜に包まれており, 周囲組織との境界は明瞭であった. 病理組織学的検査所見では, 腫瘍は薄い線維性被膜に覆われ, 大小の腺管構造とその周囲に筋上皮細胞の増殖, および軟骨様組織の形成を認め, 多形腺腫との診断であった. 術後1年6か月経過した現在, 口唇の機能的, 形態的異常はみられず, 腫瘍の再発は認めていない. 多形腺腫には悪性転化の報告もあり, 今後も注意深く経過観察を行う必要があると考えられる., Pleomorphic adenoma is the most common type of salivary gland tumor. The lip is a rare site of onset for pleomorphic adenomas that occur in the minor salivary glands. Here, we report our experience in the treatment of a patient with pleomorphic adenoma of the labial gland along with a review of the literature.The patient was a 52-year-old female who was referred to our department after consultation at the dermatology department of our institution for detailed examinations of a mass in the upper lip and being diagnosed with a benign tumor of the upper lip. A firm, elastic, highly movable mass of 11 × 9 mm was found under the mucosa of the left upper lip, which was excised under general anesthesia. The tumor was surrounded by a capsule, and the boundary of the surrounding tissue was well-delineated. Histopathological examinations revealed a thin fibrous capsule, and the proliferation of myoepithelial cells and formation of cartilage-like tissue were observed in and around the large and small ductal structures. Consequently, the tumor was diagnosed as a pleomorphic adenoma. At present, 1.5 years after surgery, no functional and morphological abnormalities of the lip have been observed, and there has been no recurrence of the tumor. Since there have been reports of malignant transformation of pleomorphic adenomas, careful follow-up will be necessary in the future.

総説, 近年，教職協働を通じて，職員にも大学のガバナンス変革の一角を担わせることへの期待から，大学職員の職能開発（SD）についての関心が高まっており，多くの検討が行われてきた．しかし，これらの検討において，学習による能力開発という側面に焦点が当たるあまり，大学という組織において，職員が企画業務に取り組むために必要な技法や企画業務を通じた人材育成・組織変革をいかに実現させるのかという観点からの具体的な議論は十分に行われず，実務的な有用性に乏しいという課題があった．本稿では，これまでのSDに関する議論を改めて整理するとともに，特にこれまでのSDに関する議論が，個人・組織の学習に関する理論の枠組みを中心とした検討に偏ったものであり，組織全体を射程に入れた組織開発や組織デザイン，人的資源管理の観点からの考察が不足していることで，SD自体が機能不全に陥っている側面を明らかにする．さらに，これからのSDにおける議論の射程を拡大すべく，大学組織における職員の企画能力の開発とその活用について，新規事業創出に関する研究を援用しながら，大学職員の専門性，新規事業創出のスキル開発と組織との相互作用による変化を織り込んだ「大学職員の企画力モデル」を検討し，新たな視座を示す．, Administrative staff in universities are increasingly expected to develop the skills needed for contributing effectively to organizational innovation in collaboration with the academic staff, and research on university administrative staff has achieved prominence in recent years. Although previous discussions regarding university staff development have referred to the importance of learning, they have little practical application because of human resource development and organization change through planning and management. This study examines previous research on staff development in universities and establishes that a lack of discussion through the lens of organization development, organizational design and human resource management causes the disorder. Furthermore, this paper presents a new model to develop and utilize the abilities of the administrative staff and proposes an entrepreneurial approach to plan and manage universities.

高速実験炉「常陽」では、復旧措置の一環として、平成26年5月に旧炉心上部機構を撤去し、キャスクに収納した。旧炉心上部機構は、「常陽」建設時より30年以上使用された機器であり、高い表面線量率を有する。炉心上部機構交換作業用設備の合理的かつ安全な設計・製作・運用に資するため、「常陽」では、原子炉容器内の線量率測定を実施し、C/E補正する手法を導入することで、旧炉心上部機構の表面線量率の最適化を図った。本研究では、当該評価手法が妥当であったことを検証するため、プラスチックシンチレーション光ファイバ(PSF)検出器を用いて、旧炉心上部機構を収納したキャスクの軸方向$\gamma$線の検出器応答分布を測定し、計算値と比較した。その結果、(1)軸方向$\gamma$線の検出器応答分布は、キャスクの形状に応じたピークを有し、その位置は、計算値と測定値で一致した。(2)軸方向$\gamma$線の検出器応答分布のC/Eは、1.1$\sim$1.7であった。なお、旧炉心上部機構の表面線量率の最適化においては、原子炉容器内の線量率測定結果の反映する際に、保守性を確保したものとしている。以上より、「常陽」旧炉心上部機構の表面線量率評価に用いた手法は、十分な信頼性を有することが確認できた。, In the experimental fast reactor Joyo, the damaged upper core structure (UCS) was retrieved into the cask in May 2014 The dose rate on UCS surface was quite high due to the activation for over 30 years operation. In order to attain the optimum safety design, manufacture and operation of equipment for UCS replacement, the method to evaluate UCS surface dose rate was developed on the basis of C/E obtained by the in-vessel dose rate measurement in Joyo. In order to verify the evaluation method, the axial gamma-ray distribution measurement on the surface of the cask, which contained UCS, was conducted using a plastic scintillating optical fiber (PSF) detector. This paper describes the comparison results between calculation and measurement as follows. (1) The measured axial gamma-ray distribution on the cask surface had a peak on proper location with considering the cask shielding structure and agree well with the calculated distribution. (2) The C/E of axial gamma-ray distribution on the cask surface was ranged from 1.1 to 1.7. It was confirmed that the calculation for UCS replacement equipment design had a margin conservatively. Then, the results showed that the developed evaluation method for UCS replacement equipment design was sufficiently reliable.

植物は常に様々な生物的あるいは非生物的ストレスにさらされている。植物の根は水分や栄養の吸収だけでなく、病傷害、乾燥、塩ストレスなど環境ストレスに対する応答においても重要な役割を担っている。植物体内におけるこうしたストレス応答において大きな役割を担っているのが、サリチル酸(SA)、ジャスモン酸(JA),エチレン(ET)、アブシシン酸(ABA)などの植物ホルモンである。病傷害関連の応答には、主にSA,JA,ETの関与が知られており、各種のストレスに対応した経路が働き応答タンパク質等が誘導され抵抗性を獲得する。中でも一群の感染応答タンパク質(PR protein: Pathogenesis-Related protein)ファミリーが耐性獲得に大きく関与することが知られている。RSOsPR10(Root Specific Oryza sativa PR 10)は、当研究室でのイネの根におけるプロテオーム解析において、塩や乾燥処理により発現が根特異的に誘導されるタンパク質として単離されたPRタンパク質である。これまでに、RSOsPR10の根特異的な発現は、塩、乾燥、傷害などのストレス刺激受容後、JAやETを介して誘導され、その誘導がSAによってほぼ完全に抑制されることが転写レベルおよび翻訳レベルで明らかにされている。この発現誘導には、ETおよびJA応答性の転写因子であるOsERF1の関与が推定されている。一方、SAによる発現誘導抑制については、最近の結果から病害応答関連の転写抑制因子であるOsWRKY76の関与が示唆されている。また、RSOsPR10遺伝子上流0.6kbおよび1.9kbをGFPレポーターに繋いだコンストラクトを導入した形質転換イネでは地上部および地下部でのGFPシグナルの強度に変化はなく、根特異的発現、ストレス応答といったRSOsPR1Oの発現制御に関わる領域は2kbよりも上流にあると考えられている。さらにプロモーター上流の発現制御領域を検討するため、遺伝子上流1.9kb,2.9kb,4kbをGUSレポーターに繋いだコンストラクトを導入した形質転換イネを用いて解析したところ、JAやACCにより1.9Kでは根特異的な応答性がほとんどみられないのに対し、2.9Kおよび4Kでは根特異的な応答性がみられたことからRSOsPR10の発現を制御する主要なプロモーター領域が1.9～2.9kbの間に存在することが示唆されている。しかしながら、その詳細な機構は明らかとなっていない。そこで本研究では、RSOsPR10の発現制御に関わるプロモーター領域のシス配列とトランス因子を明らかにするために、firefly luciferase (FLUC)/renilla luciferase (RLUC)レポーターを用いたデュアルLUCアッセイによる解析を進めた。まず、イネの根においてparticle bombardment法による遺伝子導入が有用であるか検討するため、先行研究で根特異的なJA応答性およびSA抑制が確認されているRSOsPR10の4kbpプロモーター領域をLUCレポーターに繋いだコンストラクトを導入した。その結果、JAによる誘導とSAによる誘導抑制が確認出来たため、以下の実験に取り組んだ。(1) RSOsPR10の1.9,2.7,2.9,3.3および4kbpプロモーター領域をLUCレポーターに繋いだコンストラクト(1.9K,2.7K,2.9K,3.3K,4K)を作製し、イネの根に導入した。その結果、2.9Kでは顕著なJA応答性が見られたが2.7Kでは僅かな誘導しか見られなかった。一方で、1.9KではJA応答性が見られず、3.3Kおよび4Kは2.9Kと同程度のJA応答性が見られた。このことから、2.7～2.9kbpの223bpの領域にJA誘導に関わるシス配列の存在が考えられた。この領域にはERF結合配列 GCC-boxが4つ密集して存在している。そこで、GCC-box4つのうち一つに変異を入れた2.9KコンストラクトではJA誘導に変化が見られなかったが、4つに変異を入れると、JAによる誘導レベルは2.7Kと同程度にまで減少した。(2) JA/ETの下流でGCC-boxに結合する転写因子OsERF1がRSOsPR10の発現誘導に関与するか検討するため、OsERF1遺伝子上流にT-DNAが挿入された変異体(ERF1KD)イネを入手しqRT-PCRによる発現解析を行った。WTと比較し、ERF1KDではERF1の発現量が低下していることが確認された。その上でRSOsPR10の転写レベルでの発現量を調べた結果、WTと比較して有意に誘導が減少していた。しかし、35S::ERF1を2.9Kと共導入してレポーターアッセイを行ったが、プロモーター活性に影響は与えなかった。(3) OsERF1以外のJA/ET誘導因子候補探索のため、シロイヌナズナでJA/ET誘導因子として報告のあるORA59に配列が類似するイネERFファミリーの中からOsERF83、OsERF87およびOsERF88をクローニングし、2.9Kと共導入した。すると、OsERF87に高い誘導活性のあることが見出された。OsERF87の機能に関してはこれまでに全く報告がなく、イネのJA/ET経路における新規の転写因子として同定した。(4) SAによる誘導抑制について、SAの下流で働くOsWRKY76の関与を検討した。OsWRKY76過剰発現イネの根に2.9Kを導入したところ、WTと比較して有意にJAによる誘導が抑制された。また、WTイネに2.9Kと35S::WRKY76を共導入したレポーターアッセイにおいても強い抑制が確認された。上述のようにOsERF87遺伝子の共導入は2.9Kの発現を大きく増加させるが、これにOsWRKY76遺伝子をさらに共導入するとその増加も強く抑制された。(5) OsWRKY76がRSOsPR10プロモーター領域内のW-boxに結合するか検討するため、2.7～2.9kbp領域にあるW-box配列を用いてゲルシフトアッセイを行った。その結果、W-box配列に特異的な結合が見られ、変異を入れたW-box配列には結合しなかった。これらの結果から、RSOsPR10のJAによる発現誘導にはOsERF87とOsERF1の関与が示唆された。特に遺伝子上流2.7～2.9kbp領域にある4つのGCC-boxに変異を入れると誘導が減少することから、この領域の複数のGCC-boxへの結合を介して働く可能性が考えられた。一方でSAによる誘導抑制については、OsWRKY76がW-boxに特異的に結合をすることでRSOsPR10の誘導抑制に働くことが示された。今回の研究結果からRSOsPR10の発現制御機構の一端が明らかになってきたが、それらに加えて本論文では、イネにおける根特異的なJA/ETによる誘導とSAによる抑制の生物学的な分子機構についても考察する。, Plant roots have important roles not only in absorption of water and nutrients, but also in stress tolerance. Plants cannot move on their habitat environment by themselves, so they are constantly exposed to a variety of biotic and abiotic stresses such as herbivory, pathogen attacks and environmental stresses. Therefore they have developed elaborate mechanisms to perceive external signals and to manifest adaptive responses with appropriate physiological changes. As one of the mechanisms, PR (Pathogenesis-Related) proteins have been well known to be induced by pathogen infection and act as some protect functions. The PR proteins are classified into 17 families based on amino acid sequence identity, small molecular masses and acidic pIs. It is considered that some of them involve in the defense mechanisms such as RNase activity and cell wall catabolic enzyme. However the accurate protein functions of many classes are not elucidated yet. RSOsPR10 (Root Specific Oryza sativa Pathogenesis-Related 10) has been identified as a root specific protein that is induced by biotic stress and abiotic stresses, such as salt, drought and wounding in rice at our laboratory. Transcripts and proteins of RSOsPR10 were significantly induced by exogenously applied jasmonic acid (JA) and ethylene (ET) precursor 1-aminocyclopropane-1- carboxylic acid (ACC), while salicylic acid (SA) almost completely suppressed these inductions. Furthermore, the previous study suggested that OsERF1 is one of the putative transcriptional factors in the induction of RSOsPR10. On the other hand, Takao and Yoshida of our laboratory showed preliminary results indicating that OsWRKY76, one of the transcriptional factors in the SA pathway, is involved in the suppression of JA/ET induction of RSOsPR10. However, the regulation mechanisms and signaling pathway for RSOsPR10 induction and suppression are still unclear. In this study, in order to investigate the regulational mechanisms of RSOsPR10 gene expression by JA and SA, I conducted promoter analysis using transient expression assay which was performed with rice roots by particle bombardment. (1) To identify the region of the RSOsPR10 promoter involving in the response to JA, I used a deletion series of of RSOsPR10 promoter. Sequences corresponding to -4006, -3314, -2924, -2701 and -1895 bp upstream region from the translational start site (4K, 3.3K, 2.9K, 2.7K, 1.9K), were fused to the FLUC reporter gene. These five constructs were tested for their JA inductivity of the RSOsPR10 promoter by introducing them into wild-type rice roots using particle bombardment and subsequent treatment of the roots with or without JA for 12h. In the case of the 4K, 3.3K and 2.9K, LUC activity was increased up to two fold over the mock with JA treatment, but 2.7K LUC activity was reduced. These result suggested that the region from -2924 to -2701 bp contains cis-elements contributing to the responsiveness to JA. Then, to identify JA-responsive cis-elements in the RSOsPR10 promoter, I researched GCC-box which is the putative binding site of ERF proteins and I found four GCC-box within -2924 to -2701 bp from the translational start site. In order to determine whether these four GCC-boxes are involved in the responsive to JA, I constructed a 2.9K [G2-5mut] (four GCC-box were mutated). The responsiveness to JA in this construct was similar to that of the 2.7K construct. This result indicated that GCC-boxes are important cis-elements to induce RSOsPR10 gene by JA. (2) To identify the activity of OsERF1 as a transcriptional regulator, I decided to measure RSOsPR10 gene expression in the ERF1 KD mutant line. ERF1 KD showed that RSOsPR10 gene expression was decreased, compared with wild-type plants. However the LUC activity was not affected when 35S::ERF1 was co-introduced with 2.9K using dual LUC assay (FLUC/RLUC). (3) To investigate some OsERFs other than OsERF1 as an inducer of RSOsPR10, I searched rice orthologues of Arabidopsis ERF1 and ORA59 which are known to the key regulator of JA/ET signaling pathway in Arabidopsis. First, I identified the OsERF83, OsERF87 and OsERF88 as a part of Arabidopsis ERF1 and ORA59 orthologues. Therefore, I analyzed involvement of these ERF genes by the effector assay. OsERF87 showed strong inducible activity on 2.9K expression when 35S::ERF87 and 2.9K were co-introduced. In contrast, the LUC activity was not affected when 35S::ERF83 (or 35S::ERF88) was co-introduced with 2.9K. (4) To investigate the activity of OsWRKY76 as a transcriptional repressor, 2.9K was introduced into the roots of WRKY76 OX and WRKY76 KO plants using particle bombardment. In the case of the WRKY76 KO, LUC activity was increased up to two fold after JA treatment similarity to wild-type but not in the WRKY76 OX. Furthermore, the LUC activity was suppressed when 35S::WRKY76 and 2.9K were co-introduced in the effector assay. (5) To determine the sequence specific DNA binding activity in vitro, OsWRKY76 was prepared as a fusion protein with MBP and tested for its binding activity by a gel mobility shift assay. WRKY76 bound to the W-box, but MBP control did not. Furthermore, OsWRKY76 did not bind to the mutated W-box with a single base substitution. 85歳男.血清CEA, CA19-9が高値を示した浸潤性膀胱腫瘍(移行上皮癌)であった.いずれの腫瘍マーカーも組織内での発現が確認され, 治療に伴う腫瘍サイズの減少と共に血清値の低下を認めた.治療開始後CEA, CA19-9は両方ともに腫瘍縮小にしたがい減少したが, その後CA19-9のみ上昇を認めた.原因としては, 1)画像では指摘できないサイズの再発, 転移が生じた, 2)水腎症の増悪によるCA19-9の上昇を生じた, 3)膀胱癌以外の悪性腫瘍の発生, などが考えられる.CA19-9の腫瘍組織内発現が確認されていることより, 1が最も考えられたが, CT等の画像や尿細胞診では病変の存在は指摘できなかった.腫瘍マーカー産生移行上皮癌において, これらの腫瘍マーカーが治療効果判定に有用であることが示された, An 85-year-old male with asymptomatic gross hematuria was diagnosed with invasive bladder tumor, transitional cell carcinoma grade 3. Serum levels of CEA and CA19-9 were elevated and histological examination revealed expression of both markers in the cytoplasm of cancer cells. Out of therapeutic options, intra-arterial chemotherapy and radiotherapy were selected because of his age. During the treatment, serum levels of CEA and CA19-9 decreased along with reduction of tumor size. These serum markers have been reported to be elevated in 10 to 60% of patients with bladder tumor and are useful markers for evaluation of the treatment as suggested in the present case.

The objective of this study was to investigate changes in kinematics, kinetics, attention, and performance when a continuous motor skill is performed under pressure. Fifteen right-handed university students performed a ball-bouncing task with a table-tennis racket for 5 pre-test trials, 60 acquisition trials, 5 post-test trials, and 1 pressure-test trial. In the pressure-test trial, they were told that they would receive a reward or a punishment contingent on their performance. The result showed that the average increment of heart rate under pressure was about 8 bpm (p, プレッシャー下で連続運動スキルを遂行するときの運動学的特徴,運動力学的特徴,注意,パフォーマンスを調べることを本研究の目的とした.ボールバウンド課題を用いて,15名の実験参加者に5試行のプリテスト,60試行の習得試行,5試行のポストテストを行わせた.その後に,1試行のプレッシャーテストを行わせた.プレッシャーテストでは,パフォーマンスの結果次第で報酬や罰が与えられるという教示を与えた中で課題を行わせた.その結果,ポストテストからプレッシャーテストにかけての心拍数に有意な増加が認められた.ボールの高さの正確性とグリップ把持力に変化は見られなかったが,3次元動作解析の結果,プレッシャーテストではラケット運動の周期の変動性の減少が認められ,さらにはラケット運動の左右方向の運動変位の減少が認められた.プレッシャー下での注意に関しては,身体運動に対する注意の増加は見られなかったが,注意散漫性の増加が示された.本研究におけるプレッシャー下では運動方略の変化に伴い,ラケット運動のタイミングの変動性や,変位が小さくなる運動学的変化が生じた.

In the last quarter of the nineteenth century American evangelical Protestantism, facing both the social and intellectual challenges, tried to reappropriate its tradition in the new conditions. As a result, it gave birth to two major interdenominational movements; the Social Gospel and fundamentalism. The fundamentalist movement was organized by the revivalist Dwight L. Moody, with the aim of evangelizing the entire society, particularly the labor class who had been alienated from the middle-class mainline churches. In the latter part of the 1870s Moody tried to reach the masses through urban mass revivalism, which utilized the means of big business. The overall effect of his revivals was, however, to attract middle-class regular church-goers, who saw in them a way to reconcile the preindustrial evangelical values and the new industrial ones. Troubled by the fact that his revivals had failed to reach the masses, he shifted his emphasis from directly awakening the urban poor to quickening the church members into going out among the masses as evangelists. Nonetheless, with the public enthusiasm for his revivals on the wane, Moody came to believe that the only way to reach the urban poor was through the Christian workers. Therefore, in the 1880s he concentrated upon founding the Bible schools and conferences designed to train laypersons as evangelists. The fundamentalist organizations are the product of the interactions between evangelicalism and American culture. The same can be said about the three new theologies fundamentalism adopted, i.e., "inspiration," "dispensational premillennialism," and "Keswick holiness." The fundamentalists incorporated parts of these doctrines with a view to promoting evangelism among the masses as well as the renewal of the formalistic churches. These theologies explained the "is" of American culture in the Gilded Age, while at the same time reorienting the fundamentalists toward the "ought." Fundamentalism, contrary to the popular belief that it is committed to a fixed set of beliefs, has, in fact, been a more flexible movement, always responding to and being influeced by the changes in the general culture. The fundamentalist movement, like any other popular religious movement, has made use of historically and culturally conditioned concepts in order to make an impact upon the general culture. This has entailed, on the other hand, a mingling of the Gospel and culturally defined assumptions, ideals, and values.
