We examined the structural dependence of the ion-capturing function of amidinourea (AU) resins, in which the chain structures were based on polystyrene and poly (methyl methacrylate). Amidinourea resin with poly (methyl methacrylate) chain (MCAU resin) was prepared by radical polymerization and hydration of methacryloyl cyanoguanidine, which was synthesized by the reaction of cyanoguanidine and methacryloyl chloride. The adsorption efficiencies of Cu
2+ , Zn2+ , Ni2+ , Co2+ , and Cd2+ were examined. Although both two types of the resins showed highly-selective adsorption efficiencies for Cu2+ , the adsorption efficiency of the MCAU resin was at most 60∼70% of that in the corresponding polystyrene-based AU resin. On the other hand, the MCAU resin showed quite high adsorption efficiencies after dipping it in base-containing aqueous solutions. We discussed the mechanism of these phenomena by using a monomer model of the MCAU resin, which had been analyzed by UV spectra and X-ray diffraction. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]- Published
