In many countries of the world, including Lithuania, suicide rates for men are several times higher than for women. Therefore, the phenomenon of men’s suicide is receiving a lot of attention in public, scientific, and political discourses. In contrast, much less attention is paid to tackling women’s suicides and women’s mental health problems. Lithuania has been among the countries with the highest suicide rates for both men and women in the world for several decades, but research on the social and demographic aspects of women’s suicide in Lithuania is lacking. This paper aims to examine the demographic losses that Lithuania suffers from women suicides and assess the socio-demographic differentiation of these losses. The empirical part of the study was based on the calculation of years of life lost methodology. The years of life lost method is acknowledged as an accurate measure for assessing the impact of specific causes of death on premature mortality. Data sources for this study were the World Health Organization, Institute of Hygiene, and Human Mortality Database. The results of our study show that the number of years of lives lost due to women’s suicide decreased statistically significantly from 376 [321; 431] in 2007 to 287 [238; 335] in 2020. In Lithuania, the total number of women suicide was the highest among the 80+ year age group, however, the number of years of life lost due to suicide was the highest among the 30-39 year age group. The change in women’s suicide rates was inconsistent and for women, the decline in demographic loss due to suicide was twice as slow as for men. Nevertheless, the number of years of lives lost due to women’s suicide was about 5 times smaller than that of men in 2020. In Lithuania, high rates of women’s suicide reflect the poor state of women’s mental health, which poses challenges to the country’s mental health policy and sustainable demographic development.

DIFFERENTIATION (Developmental psychology) , *PARENTING , *PRESCHOOL children's attitudes , *CONFLICT management , *MENTAL health , *CHILD psychology - Abstract
Background. Family and emotional environment are among the most important factors influencing development of children personalities. Their mental health during pre-school years and later is strongly influenced by the patterns of interactions that parents follow when communicating with each other and with children. The literature leaves no doubt that parenting styles and interpersonal conflict management strategies applied by the parents are important factors in this context. However, there is a lack of research on the influence of parents' personalities on the choice of parenting style and conflict management strategy. In this paper, the role of parents' self-differentiation flBowen, 1978) in the communication with their spouse and pre-school child was addressed. The aim of this research was to examine the link of self-differentiation of parents raising pre-school children (3-7 years) to their parenting style and conflict management strategies. Methods and materials. Participants of the research were 92 parents (19 men and 73 women) of preschool children. Participants were asked to fill out the questionnaire, consisting of socio-demographic questions, Skowron, Friedlander fl1998) Differentiation of Self Inventory (Cronbach alpha = 0,833), Communication Patterns Questionnaire (Cronbach alpha = 0,882), flChristensen, Sulloway, 1985), Questionnaire of Parenting Styles (Cronbach alpha = 0,707) (Robinson, Mandleco, 1995). Results and conclusions. The results of this study revealed that self-differentiation correlates positively with constructive communication and authoritative parenting style and negatively with authoritarian parenting style and demand-withdraw conflict management resolution. Regression model showed that self-differentiation has the prognostic value for parenting style and conflict management strategies: the higher prevalence of authoritative parenting style is best predicted by higher self-differentiation; same can be said about constructive communication, except this is true only for female participants; the higher prevalence of demand withdraw strategy is best predicted by lower self-differentiation in combination with unemployment. Finally, higher prevalence of authoritarian and withdrawal parenting style is best predicted by lower education [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The article is based on a paper presented in the European Congress on Mental Health in European Families (Prague, May 1991). It draws on results of the values survey conducted in 1990. In this survey 1,000 respondents were interviewed using a representative national sample. Factor and cluster analysis broke down respondents into two groups – those who have recently felt more positive than negative emotions, and those who have recently felt more negative than positive emotions – and revealed that they correspond to the characteristics of the family. The first group contained more men, married people, the second – women and widows. This survey also confirmed attitudes to the family and the relationships within it that were revealed by previous surveys. A three-dimensional model is used to describe them. Cultural harmony, the factors supporting the relationship (relationship supporting resources) and interpersonal harmony were distinguished. Generally it can be said that all the factors of this model have an impact on an individual’s psychological well-being.
