CONSUMPTION (Economics) , *SCIENTIFIC literature , *POPULATION aging , *RETIREMENT age , *ECONOMISTS , *NUDGE theory - Abstract
The aim of the paper is to review the global research on household saving behaviour, to review the scientific literature, and to consider the selection of the optimal research methodology for the thesis ‘Lithuanian Households’ Saving Behaviour for Retirement in an Ageing Society’. The paper reviews the main theoretical perspectives defining household behaviour and the methodological approaches of research conducted in the USA, Germany, Japan, the UK and Scandinavian countries. The traditional approach of economists to the human being in the economy is compared with the theoretical perspective of behavioural economists. The article presents recommendations for the methodology of research in Lithuania, by proposing to analyse the data from the Household Finance and Consumption Survey, and, based on the assumptions of behavioural economists, to provide recommendations to help people save more for retirement. SCIENTIFIC literature , *JUSTICE administration , *CRIMINAL procedure , *CIVIL procedure , *THEMATIC analysis , *SMALL states - Abstract
Twenty-two EU member states, including Denmark, Sweden, and Finland, oblige some lay participation (lay judges/jury) in the administration of justice. However, the models of this institute differ among countries. Based on the analysis of lay participation models in Denmark, Sweden, and Finland, this article aims to point out and describe their advantages and disadvantages. To achieve this aim, qualitative research was carried out. The methods employed for data collection included thematic analysis and document selection. Document content analysis (i.e., the analysis of research papers, scientific literature on the topic, the Constitutions of Denmark, Sweden, and Finland, and other international and national legislation) was applied for data processing, and the methods of a dogmatic and comparative analysis were employed for data analysis. The findings of the research disclose that lay judges and jurors are ordinary citizens who work together with legal judges to decide several different types of criminal cases in the Danish and Swedish district and regional courts. Meanwhile, Sweden also has this institute in civil and administrative cases. Finland has only lay judges in criminal cases. This article is divided into four sections: the first section discusses the advantages and disadvantages of the Danish model; the second outlines the Swedish model; and the third describes the Finnish model. The last section compares these models and provides a discussion on the issue. Finally, the article provides conclusions based on the analysis of scientific sources and documents, and the results. EMPLOYEE motivation , *HIGH technology industries , *SCIENTIFIC literature , *INDUSTRIAL costs , *BUSINESS models - Abstract
High-tech industry stands out as progressive, inovative field of industry which continuously makes investments towards R&D development. High-tech industry also has distinguishing features such as rapid use of new science findings and constant investments to new equipment, which tends to quickly depreciate and is replaced. Also, high-tech industry companies typicaly cooperate with international organisations, research centers and universities. It is not unusual for high-tech industry companies to have a lot of patents and licences. It is difficult to implement business improvement models, which tend to increase competitive advantage by reducing production cost, increasing production speed and reducing delivery time in continiously evolving high-tech industry companies. In this paper the posibility to implement business improvement models in high-tech industry is analyzed. Additionaly, employee motivation and initiative, as factors of business model implementation success is analyzed. Finally, based on the research of scientific literature and empirical data of two high-tech industry companies a model for high-tech industry performance improvement is proposed, which also introduces tools to improve employee motivation and initiative. MENTAL illness , *THOUGHT & thinking , *SCIENTIFIC literature , *PARENT-child relationships , *PSYCHOLOGY of parents - Abstract
The act of mentalisation refers to the capacity of understanding oneself and others in terms of intentional mental states (feelings, beliefs, intentions, and desires). Different definitions of this capacity for understanding mental states - such as theory of mind or reflective function - can be found in scientific literature along with subtle differences in conceptualisations of its development. Nevertheless, an increasing interest in interpersonal factors of development in mentalisation can be observed lately. One of the approaches in understanding the development of mentalisation is suggested by Fonagy and colleagues (1991, 2004), according to who the parent-child attachment and parental mentalisation are seen as key factors in the development of a mentalising capacity in children. Of these relationships, the ones in early development are discussed more widely. Much less is known theoretically and empirically about the relationships between parental mentalisation, a child's attachment and mentalisation in middle childhood and adolescence. During these stages of development, important changes take place in the attachment system as well as within behaviors and needs of a child, including a move towards more integrated attachment representations together with socio-cognitive developmental changes related to puberty. It is not clear if parental mentalisation and a child's attachment security remain of the same importance as they are in early childhood to the development and manifestation of child's mentalisation from middle childhood to adolescence. Within this context, the aim of this paper is to analyse and reveal the most important empirical findings related to the research of mentalisation in childhood and adolescence. In this way, we aim to highlight and critically evaluate certain theoretical assumptions about the mentalisation of parents and a child's attachment security as factors of a child's mentalisation development. In this context, the aim of this paper is to analyze and to reveal the most important empirical findings related to the study of mentalisation in childhood and adolescence. An analysis of empirical studies showed that good parental mentalisation is important for attachment security and acquisition of theory of mind in early development. Data also reveals the importance of maternal reflective functioning for the development of organised attachment strategies. Moreover, poor maternal reflective functioning was related with disorganised attachment, which, according to different studies, was related to poorer mentalisation in early and in later development. Even though links between attachment security and mentalisation remain significant in middle childhood and adolescence, research findings indicate different relationships between strategies of attachment and mentalisation. It might be that not the attachment security itself, but the organisation of attachment representations might be an important condition for the development of mentalisation. Research findings show that maternal mentalisation remains important for the mentalisation of a child. On the other hand, there is still a lack of empirical data which could provide an opportunity to explain the mechanisms of how these processes interact in later development. An analysis of existing studies allows us to state that the approach-proposed development of mentalisation proposed by Fonagy and colleagues can partly be transferred to middle childhood and adolescence. MODULAR design , *PRODUCT life cycle , *SCIENTIFIC literature , *DESIGN services , *DEFINITIONS - Abstract
Maintaining a competitive edge in today's markets with short product life cycles and competitors quickly copying commercial success ideas is a significant challenge. Service organisations have to look for ways to quickly adapt to environmental changes and offer the most satisfying services to demanding and rushing customers. One of the possible ways to achieve these goals is to apply the principles of modular design to services. Although the modular design is widely used in the production of goods, its applicability to services has not yet been sufficiently researched. There is a lack of consensus on the terms used, there is no clear definition of the modular service system requirements, there are many doubts in the application of quantitative decision methods for modular service system management, and so forth. The article aims to identify the fundamental problems associated with the use of modular design for services. Based on the results of the analysis of the scientific literature, we propose a scheme describing the service system, and identify the important problematic issues related to the application of modular design to services. In this paper, we use methods of systematic analysis, abstraction, synthesis, and critical analysis. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

AUTHORSHIP , *SCIENTIFIC literature , *HISTORY of astronomy , *ENGRAVING , *ALPHABET , *BOOK illustration ,POLISH history - Abstract
The aim of this article is to investigate the history of the Cyrillic manuscript transcription of Selenographia (1647), which details Moon observation - the work of Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth astronomer Johannes Hevelius (Jan Heweliusz, 1611-1687). The codex is relevant in two aspects: first, as an example of a late-17th century book, incorporating the characteristics of both a manuscript and a printed publication; and second - as an example of scientific literature in the Commonwealth. Hevelius is a well-known sciencist. The researcher is recognized as the first precise topographer of the Moon. He has composed a catalogue of 1564 stars, discovered four comets, and defined new boundaries of several constellations. In historiography, the manuscript translation of Selenographia has been known since the end of the 19th century. However, in the beginning of the 20th century, the transcript was equated to a piece owned by Tsar Feodor III Alexeyevich (1661-1682), which was present in his library in 1682. The manuscript has been studied by multiple linguists, astronomers, and museologists from various countries; however, it is still yet to receive attention from Lithuanian scientists. This article aims to clarify the currently available scientific information regarding the manuscript version of J. Hevelius's work Selenographia, which is presently kept in the Manuscript Department of the Wroblewski Library of the Lithuanian Academy of Sciences (LMAVB). This study also seeks to answer the following questions: whether the scientists of the GDL were aware of the piece and its Slavic translation, if there is a possibility that the codex may have belonged to the library of Tsar Feodor III Alexeyevich, and what are the history and the lifecycle of the codex. The object of this investigation is a manuscript codex (LMAVB RS F19-318) archived in the LMAVB. A digital copy of an exemplar archived in the Zurich ETH Library was used for comparative analysis. The history of astronomy in 17th century Europe and the GDL, as well as the placement of this work of Hevelius in that history, is shortly discussed and based on a literary analysis. This information was used to evaluate the scientific value of the manuscript codex under investigation and make conclusions regarding any possible demand for the translations of Selenographia in the GDL's scientific environment of that time. Codicological and comparative analyses with the original print enabled to consider the circumstances of the translation and transcription of Selenographia and establish the characteristics of the manuscript codex. It was determined that the text is written in a hybrid Church Slavic language; it is written by several scribes in the Calligraphic Book Font with characteristics of the Chancellerie Font, distinctive to the cursives used in the 17th century in Kiev and Moscow. The transcription of the translation is illustrated with original copper engravings (17 of 140), hand-drawn copies of original drawings (17), and original (3) pictures. The majority of illustrations are missing, some blank gaps meant for tables are present, and several tables have been redacted completely. The contents of Selenographia were adapted to fit the environment of its purchaser: all dedications and celebratory texts dedicated to Hevelius were removed and supplementary texts were eliminated, an original preface created by the translator was added, and only an anonymous "ruler" is mentioned. The transcription of the text was intended to maintain the order of the text and illustrations as well as the exact glosses system present in the margins. All numbers and dates have been written in the Cyrillic alphabet; however a Western year numbering system was maintained, and the surnames of scientists were retained in their original Latin forms; objects named in schemes and diagrams were presented in the Latin alphabet. The coinciding fragments of an extant Selenographia translation (chapters 48, 51, 54, and 55) and texts of the codex kept in the LMAVB archives allow us to conclude that it is a translation made by S. Chizhinski during his service in Posol'skii prikaz (Moscow) in 1678-1681. Based on all the defined characteristics, as well as the unfinished appearance of the book and the variety of paper used, it may be concluded that it is a transcription meant for the diplomatic needs of Posol'skii prikaz rather than for the personal library of the Tsar. Efforts to find any evidence of the discussed Selenographia translation in the history of astronomy and book history in Lithuania were unsuccessful. It was not possible to clarify the history of the function of the codex as well. Nonetheless, the history of this book focuses one's attention to another little-studied topic in Lithuania - the connections of literature and book culture in the 17th century that bridge the GDL and the Tsardom of Russia. To sum up, it may be concluded that access to new archival sources in Russia and Lithuania and a detailed chemical analysis of materials making up the codex (the ink in particular) would affirm or deny the conclusions reached in this study. The article reviews the activities of the “Iron Wolf” of the Lithuanian National Guard in 1927–1930. The main focus is on the Kaunas group of this organization, reviewing the activities of opposition organizations, the tracking of public institution employees and the formation of nationalist organizations and a bureaucratic apparatus loyal to the nationalists (tautininkai). Based on the archival material, which has so far been little systematically used in the scientific literature, the efforts of the post-coup regime of A. Smetona and A. Voldemaras to establish themselves in power are revealed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The purpose of integrated health education is to ensure a successful child health education in school, to contribute to the child’s physical, mental and social well-being, capacity development. Integrated health education is based on the mobilized work of school community: cooperation among different subjects’ teachers and other specialists, the integrated efforts of school, families, and a variety of health care and health education institutes. The health education of schoolchildren is one of the main priorities of health policy in Lithuania. As far as the health education in emphasized in the Law on Education of the Republic of Lithuania (2011), the Primary and Basic Education General Programs (2008), and the Secondary Education General Programs (2011), General Health Education Program (2012), it is relevant to focus on and analyse the role of teachers in integrated health education. This paper aims to highlight the importance of an integrated health education and the teachers’ role in the application of this education in practice. The following research objectives were raised: 1) to describe the role of teachers as health educators; 2) to reveal the importance of an integrated health education using as the basis the teachers’ reflections. The methods applied in the study: theoretical –analysis, interpretation, synthesis and generalization of scientific literature and laws; empirical – summarization of professional experience (teachers’ reflection); and content analysis. Fourteen teachers of general subjects, participating in the study of integrated education, presented their reflection on the conducted educational activity by answering open-ended questions. Teachers were asked to express their opinion on the following aspects: what they think about integrated health care; what the integrated health education advantages are; what is the role of the health educator. The teachers’ reflections were analysed employing the qualitative content analysis method. The integrated health education is affected by the level of the preparation of teachers and in general by his or her professional competences. On the other hand, believing in the importance of health educator’s role as well as the ability to evaluate the theoretical and practical preparation, the ability to reflect on the health education activities and to share best practices with colleagues are also very important aspects. For the successful integration of health education, it is important that the teacher would become a member of developing school community, capable to convey health education knowledge, to develop healthy living skills and values of schoolchildren as well as the create the educational environment that supports and strengthens healthy living. The qualitative study has revealed that teachers believe that integrated health education contributes to the development of schoolchildren’s health and healthy living building competences as well as to other general and subject-specific competences; it enables to change and direct schoolchildren attitudes and motivation towards the healthy living lifestyle, encourages and supports teachers in cooperation with each other and with the whole school community, the motivation to improve one’s competences as a health educator. The study disclosed that teachers have different perceptions of responsibilities and their role in the process of integrated health education: some teachers perceive it as their duty, while the others emphasise the shared teachers and parents’ responsibility for health education. Some teachers believe that this field is the responsibility of health education teachers – the assigned personnel.

Although the vast majority of managers and employees understand that changes are inevitable and it is necessary to respond to them, however, few are aware that changes can be managed. Therefore, it becomes an important management issue. In addition, change management is not an easy process, and the perception of the need to change is not a guarantee of success. A large share of ongoing changes ends in failure. The main questions arise as what the key changes faced by the organization are and what major obstacles to implement the changes are. Obvious scientific problem is the complex change management process as well as insufficient coverage of obstacles while implementing changes in organizations. Novelty: the change management essence is highlighted; the opinion of managers on obstacles of change management has been investigated and determined, while determining the cause of change resistance and obstacles. The object of the paper is obstacles of change management. The purpose is to examine the main obstacles of the implementation of changes in organizations. The objectives of the research: 1) to define the concept of change management; 2) to analyze the main barriers of change implementation; 3) to identify obstacles to the implementation of changes in specific organizations. The methods applied in the research: analysis of scientific literature, comparative, statistical analysis, aggregation methods. Data analysis used the SPSS 17 computer program package. The study conducted a standardized interview survey method. While there is no doubt that in the today“™s dynamic world of instability change management has become a necessity, this perception does not guarantee the success of the organization changes implementation. While implementing changes, organizations face with a wide range of obstacles ““ both economic and managerial or psychological. In each of the organizations while implementing changes any obstacle can become a cornerstone, but it is often emphasized that main obstacles are poor change management, lack of resources, poor communication, hasty introduction of changes and certainly ““ the resistance of workers, their unwillingness and fear to change. As the study subjects, leaders of 37 organizations operating in Klaipeda city have been selected; a simple random sample has been applied, so that the selection of all items have equal access to the test sets. The study was conducted in March, 2013, communicating directly with the leaders of Klaipeda city organizations that have been chosen as complying with the selection criteria and who have given their consent. The survey of 37 organizations operating in Klaipeda city leaders revealed that managers are most likely to consider as changes that take place in order to improve or amend the organization“™s lifestyle items and respond to external and internal changes. When trying to determine what are the major obstacles to the change implementation, executives noted that major obstacles in the change implementation are considered to be the inflexibility and poor leadership of the managers, lack of initiative and employee resistance to change. The evaluation of the test results and theoretical insights may make such recommendations to managers seeking to avoid obstacles to the implementation of changes: 1) to determine the cause of change; 2) to evaluate the employee resistance to change perspective; 3) to envisage the factor of the lack of initiative; 4) to assess the change management knowledge and skills shortages.

The main purpose of this article is to propose the model of Fairtrade products’ development in Lithuania, after analyzing the Fairtrade system, as a social responsibility tool. The paper consists of the three main parts: the analysis of literature, research with its results and a developed model with conclusions and recommendations. There were varieties of methods applied: literature and document analysis, the comparison method, the survey method, the structured questionnaire interview method and synthesis methods. Based on scientific literature, the Fairtrade concept analysis, and a summary of the main problems in the distribution of Fairtrade products, the model was created that should help to spread Fairtrade ideas in Lithuania, and in turn, should produce quality for us, improve the third-world’s life and secure a bright future. The literature analysis reviews the Fairtrade concept and its variety of definitions. The most widely used definition is given by Fairtrade International, which states that Fairtrade is a trading partnership, based on a dialogue, transparency and respect that seeks greater equity in international trade. It contributes to sustainable development by offering better trading conditions to, and securing the rights of marginalized producers and workers – especially in the South. The article also presents the history of the movement evolution when the first real manifestations appeared in the mid-twentieth century, and the overall Fairtrade system, including associated organizations, standards and marking, which all have been still developed. Throughout the world, Fairtrade marked goods are widely available in supermarkets, world shops and it is reported that more than half of the respondents are aware about Fairtrade and buy these products. However, in Lithuania there are no research articles on these topics, and also information in media about the Fairtrade movement and its meaning is missing. And while people can buy such goods in Lithuania, human unconsciousness and brand anonymity discourage sales of these products. According to the Fairtrade International statistics, the turnover of fairtrade products in 2011 has increased in 12%, however in Lithuania it decreased significantly by 17%. The authors present 3 scientific references which explain the main reasons why people do not purchase Fairtrade products and what are the key factors to improve the turnover of Fairtrade products. The research was divided into two analyses: internet survey of consumers of 20-60 years– there were 406 respondents questioned that satisfied with the research to understand the demand of Fairtrade products, and also four representatives of supermarkets were examined to discuss whether supermarkets would be interested to improve the Fairtrade products’ turnover. The research data were processed by the statistical analysis program SPSS. Descriptive statistics methods were used for data analysis (means calculations, correlation analysis, chi-square tests, etc.). To conclude, the research showed that a vast majority of respondents did not know the meaning of Fairtrade. However, they were willing to buy Fairtrade products even for a higher price after they had been explained of it. The representatives of supermarkets stated that they would propose more of Fairtrade products if consumers show the demand. Therefore, the author suggested a model which should help to increase the Fairtrade products’ turnover – there must be a non-profit-making organization established in Lithuania which should spread the information about Fairtrade objectives, so that people would know and understand the meaning of it. There also must be a feedback system created so that consumers could feel the satisfaction and see the changes their purchases make in the third world countries.

The company Kultūra (1920–1937) in Siauliai was one of the largest and most significant Lithuanian interwar commercial publishers. During the first decade of Lithuanian independence it foresaw the need to provide the public with editions, which were improved in both content and form. The publishing house tried to make its books similar to the publications released in Western Europe from the artistic point of view. The subject of the work is the Siauliai company Kultūra book design from the artistic point of view. The aim is to determine design quality and characteristics of Kultūra books. The objectives are to explore the publishing activities of the company Kultūra; to analyze the company’s Kultūra attitude towards the design of the books; to identify the main factors influencing the aesthetic appearance of Kultūra books; to explore the stylistic features of the main artists who illustrated and designed the covers of the books of the company Kultūra; to analyze the design of the main types of the Kultūra company books with regard to their specifics. In the research, both general scientific and special bibliography methods were used. Analysis of primary the Kultūra company sources and scientific literature has led to the conclusion that considering difficult conditions of book production process and the lack of professional graphic artists in the third decade of the twentieth century, the company Kultūra was able to release quality books, meeting both the artistic and printing criteria of that time. Seventy percent of the company’s books were illustrated. The broad target audience demanded the development of both thematic and typological diversity ofthe publishing repertoire. Different artistic concepts of book types resulted in a diversity of illustrative material. The books printed in Germany have both a more attractive artistic design and a higher printing quality. The company Kultūra was able to choose a larger size of paper, to get cliches and replicas as well as to use offset printing. It pursued cooperation with the technically most powerful Lithuanian and foreign printing companies andinvited artists to design covers and illustrate books. All this is sufficient proof of how seriously the company Kultūra regarded artistic book design. The books were illustrated mostly by the popular artist Kazys Simonis, eight coloured covers were designed by famous artist of Siauliai Gerardas Bagdonavicius. A few books were illustrated by the Lithuanian artists Aldona Kazanavicienė, Antanas Kazanavicius and Pranas Giedravicius. Other books were illustrated by foreign artists Wilhelm Busch, Francz Muller-Munster, Paul-Gustave Dore and others.

This article elaborates on the publishing activities (1907-1940) of the Lithuanian Scientific Society (LSS) discussing the implemented plans and their significance as well as the unrealized ideas and reasons of their failure. The paper determines the authors that mostly contributed to various publishing activities and shows how the scale of the publishing activities of LSS changed from the foundation of LSS to its closure. In total, LSS published almost 90 textbooks, 29 documents, dozens of off prints from Lietuvių tauta ("Lithuanian Nation") and "Medicina". Plans to publish encyclopaedias, indices, maps and the journal Medicina ir gamta ("Medicine and Nature") were not implemented. The main upsurge in publishing was in 1918-1922. The political and cultural environment undoubtedly influenced publishing in Lithuania. LSS played the major role as a provider of textbooks for developing Lithuanian school and as a publisher and distributor of scientific literature. The publishing activities of LSS were widely known in Lithuania and abroad.

Scientific problem refers to the lack of investigations that provide answers to the question if school success depends on perceived social support, is it possible to increase grades, attendance and positive behaviors by increasing social support from parents, teachers and class teachers. The purpose of the research is to reveal peculiarities of perceived social support and school performance schools. The aim of this article is to reveal the influence of social support on grades, attendance and behavior in the school. The research was carried out applying the following research methods: analysis of scientific literature, survey research, statistical data analysis. It was developed students survey questionnaire with 236 multiple-choice items. These items address students' self-assessments of their beliefs about their social environment - neighborhoods, schools, friends, and families - and about their own psychological health and school performance. The research is based on the answers of 1071 students (577 boys and 494 girls) of eighth grade. The paper reports only part of the research results. Data analyzes reveals that higher parent's, teacher's and class teacher’s social support are associated with better school performance: attendance, grades, and behavior, so social support defined as a protective factor. Protective factors are generally strengths that are present in individuals or in the environments and they help reduce the impact of the risks. Feeling that you supported and resources from caring relations contribute to children's school success. Caring families protect children from school failure by strengthening confidence, ability to overcome difficulties and school problems. Caring teachers and class teachers protect children by ensuring healthy teacher-student relationship, student's self esteem, motivation and interest in the teaching subjects that increases grades, attendance and behavior and decreases a possibility of school failure.
