The paper addresses the complex nature of the myth and its puzzle, through the ancient literary sources that shaped the story of Antigone as we know it today. The review of the literary treatments of the myth of Antigone in European literature served us as an interpretative direction in the conception of the literary treatments of this myth in contemporary Macedonian literature through the example of two poems entitled Antigone, one by Janko Ninov and the other by Kalia Dimitrova, the short story entitled Tragedy ‘Creon’ by Kalina Maleska and the play Ismena by Katerina Momeva. On the one hand, in both contemporary poetic achievements we follow a stable adherence to the basic mythic schemes and a consistent takeover of classical patterns from dramatic templates, as is the case with the poems dedicated to Antigone of Ninov and Dimitrova. On the other hand, in the works of Momeva and Maleska, a series of deviations from the classical patterns are evident. They are manifested as differences in the dramatic structure, freedom in the characterization of the characters and contamination of the classic mythical fables with ethical behaviors and aesthetic solutions inherent in the current context of postmodern society. All this points to the conclusion that the establishment of the network of intertextual relations such as citationality, sententity, emulation or imitation aims to address the social dichotomy of the contemporary context, rather than expressing fidelity to classical patterns. These connections of the content of the current reality with that of the classical past are realized by injecting contemporary poetic, critical and theoretical material into the new representation and recreation of the original mythical story.
