Pawning practices are widely practiced in Banjar society. So far, pawning in Banjar society has been considered a form of social solidarity to help those facing financial difficulties. However, in reality, pawning is also closely related to economic and religious issues. This practice carries various meanings within Banjar society. Therefore, this study is crucial to explore the meaning of pawning in the context of Banjar society. Through in-depth interviews with local communities, it was found that pawning has multidimensional aspects. In addition to being regarded as a form of mutual assistance and social solidarity to help communities meet emergency financial needs, pawning also has economic motivations, where the recipient of the pawn aims to gain profit. Interestingly, both the pawner and the pawn recipient adhere to principles to ensure that their transactions do not violate Islamic law. Consequently, they modify the pawn into a sale-and-buy-back transaction known as jual beli hidup (living sale). The findings of this study demonstrate that pawning practices in Banjar society are a complex blend of social, economic, and religious aspects. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
