Background and Objective: Papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) can be affected by underlying diseases. There is controversy about whether PTC and Hashimoto's thyroiditis are connected. The present study was conducted to evaluate the effect of Hashimoto's thyroiditis on papillary thyroid carcinoma. Methods: This retrospective study was conducted on 100 cases of total thyroidectomy (TT) referred to pathology centers of public and private hospitals of Kurdistan Region, Iraq, from 2019 to 2021. Data about histopathological findings such as pathology diagnosis, Hashimoto's thyroiditis (HT), toxic goiter, multinodular goiter (MNG), diagnosis based on the physician’s report and FNAC (fine needle aspiration cytology) results were collected and compared. Findings: Out of 100 TT cases examined, 41 cases were diagnosed as HT, 22 cases of PTC were identified, 11 of which were associated with HT background. Out of 100 TT, non-toxic goiter was found in 54 cases and toxic goiter in 5 cases. The most common indication for TT was multinodular goiter, which was found among 10 cases of PTC. There was a significant association between HT and PTC (p=0.036) with Odds ratio of 1.87 (95% CI: 1.19-2.82). FNAC was malignant or suspicious for PTC in 7 cases and histological diagnosis was malignant in 5 cases. Fourteen surgeries were performed depending on the radiological findings of suspicious nodules with the diagnosis of thyroid cancer in 6 cases‎. Conclusion: The results of the study showed a potential relationship between Hashimoto's thyroiditis and papillary thyroid carcinoma.

Background and Objectives: Vaspin is a novel adipocytokine. Various studies have shown that vaspin is associated with many types of cancer. This study aims to determine the association of vaspin rs2236242 gene polymorphism with vaspin level in women with papillary thyroid cancer (PTC) and Multinodular goiter (MNG). Methods: In this case-control study participants were 134 women. They were divided into three groups; PTC (n=49), MNG (n=30) and control (n=55). Ten milliliter peripheral blood samples were taken from participants, 5 ml was used for DNA extraction and 5 ml for preparation of serum. The vaspin level was measured by Sandwich ELISA kit. The genotype determination of vaspin rs2236242 polymorphism was done using the tetra primer-amplification refractory mutation system/polymerase chain reaction method. Results: There were no significant difference in serum vaspin level among the three groups. There was no significant association between genotypes of vaspin rs2236242 polymorphism and serum vaspin level in any groups. Logistic regression analysis showed that the difference in the frequency of the genotypes of rs2236242 polymorphism in the MNG group was significant compared to the control group. Today, immunohistochemical markers can be used in diagnosis and prognosis of tumors. The aim of this study was to compare the expression of CD117 in multinodular goiter and papillary thyroid carcinoma and its association with prognostic factors. Materials and methods: In this cross-sectional study, samples of thyroid tissue from 60 multinodular goiter and 60 papillary thyroid carcinoma cases who underwent thyroidectomy in Tehran Mostafa Khomeini Hospital during 2011-18, were evaluated for CD117 expression via immunohistochemistry. The expression intensity was scored 0-3. Increased CD117 expression was associated with decreased lymph node involvement and increased tumor size (P<0.05), but there was no significant relationship between this marker and other prognostic variables (P=0.081). Conclusion:There are contradictory findings on the relation between CD117 expression and prognostic factors in malignant cases, therefore, further studies are recommended to clarify the association. Introduction : Surgery is an option for multinodular goiter (MNG), but extension of surgery is controversial due to risk of recurrence and post operative complications. So, we decided to compare these problems between subtotal (ST) and total (TT) thyroidectomy as surgical treatment of MNG. Materials & Methods: This cross-sectional retrospective study was done between 2011-2012 . 104 patients with benign MNG ( 52 in TT and 52 in ST groups) that operated before year 2006 in Imam Reza Educational Hospital ,were enrolled. Rate of recurrence and surgical complications compared between two groups. P < 0.05 considered significant. Results : Mean age of patients was 45.3 years .Mean duration of Follow up was 74 months . 8 patients in ST group( 15.4 %) and no patient in TT group had recurrence of goiter . ( p< 0.05) . There was no significant differences in transient and permanent hypoparathyroidism , transient and permanent recurrent laryngeal nerve palsy , mortality ,hematoma,wound infection and hospital stay duration between two groups. Conclution : Total thyroidectomy as procedure of choice for multinodular goiter is recommended in Educational Hospitals with experienced surgens. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
