Background: Moral intelligence has a direct effect on the professional performance of individuals, desirable health services and reduction of medical costs. This study was aimed to evaluate the moral intelligence of trainees and medical interns of Kashan University of medical sciences in 2021. Materials and Methods: This descriptive cross-sectional study was performed in 2021 on clinical students. Sampling was done by stratified random sampling among medical trainees and interns. A total of 209 people participated in the study. The data collection tool was Lenick and Kiel Moral Intelligence Questionnaire. Data were analyzed using SPSS software. Results: The results of this study showed that the mean score of students' moral intelligence was 71.75. 9.15 (good). In examining the dimensions of moral intelligence, honesty with a score of 73.15±10.44 has the highest score and forgiveness with a score of 10.92±68.06 has the lowest score. The difference in the mean score of moral intelligence in the dimension of responsibility was significant (P=0.03). Moral intelligence and all its dimensions except empathy were lower in dormitory students than in students living in a private home with family. Conclusion: Considering the level of moral intelligence score of medical students in clinical courses, there is a need to revise the ethical guidelines for the development of moral intelligence.

Introduction: By conducting a proper evaluation, it is possible to identify the strengths and weaknesses of clinical education, and by strengthening the positive points and eliminating the shortcomings, steps can be taken in the direction of reforming the educational system. This study was conducted with the aim of investigating the three-circle model of Dundee University in determining the essential duties of clinical students of Jahrom University of Medical Sciences. Materials and Methods: This research was carried out using a cross-sectional descriptive method. The subjects of studied were interns of Jahrom University of Medical Sciences (Intern) who were working in internal, surgery, pediatrics, women and events departments. Sampling was done in an easy and accessible way (from different sections by age and sex). Data collection was done using a researcher-made questionnaire. The questionnaire was distributed among 50 interns in Jahrom Faculty of Medical Sciences in Peymaniyeh and Motahari hospitals who were present in different departments. Data analysis was done using spss software version 21 as well as descriptive statistical tests (mean, percentage and standard deviation) and inferential tests (regression and Spearman). Results: The highest level of satisfaction with the quality of clinical experiences gained in clinical internship was in the surgery department (63.2%) and the lowest in the family medicine department (63.2%). The highest satisfaction score of students in social medicine, internal medicine, psychiatry and surgery department was from observing at least one professor during physical examination, and the highest satisfaction score of students in pediatric department was a good opportunity to follow the progress of patients' treatment. The majority of the students considered the training in patient interviewing skills (65.8%), taking care of hospitalized patients (65.8%) and doctor-patient communication skills (65.8%) as sufficient (suitable and good). Also, the majority of the students considered the educational training in the field of doctor-patient communication skills using an interpreter if needed (63.2%) and caring for elderly patients (65.8%) insufficient. The majority of the students found the educational training in the field of medical data recording (65.8%) and confidentiality and privacy of the patient (81.6%) to be sufficient (suitable and good). Also, the majority of students considered education in the field of medical economics (35.1%) and population-based medicine (31.6%) to be insufficient. Conclusion: Based on the results of the present study, it was determined that using the three-circle model of Dundee University is an effective method in identifying the strengths and weaknesses of medical students in relation to clinical training. Background and Aim: Ideal clinical education is the process of preparing nursing students to accept different roles in the areas of health services. This study was aimed to determine the facilitating and inhibiting factors of learning clinical skills from the viewpoints of intern nursing students in the Faculty of Nursing and Midwifery at Kurdistan university of Medical Sciences. Materials and Methods: In this study, 48 nursing students were selected by convenience sampling. Data collection tool was a questionnaire consisted of three sections including 7 questions for demographic information, 34 and 30 questions related to the facilitating and inhibiting factors affecting learning clinical skills respectively. SPSS software and regression 16 were used for data analysis. Findings: The results of this study showed that the most important factor in facilitating intern student learning clinical skills was related to the scope of the relationship between teacher and student (34%), and the most inhibiting factor was teacher characteristics (45.8%). Conclusion: The findings indicated the desperate need for professional competence in intern nursing students of Kurdistan University of Medical Sciences while considering the facilitating and inhibiting factors in clinical education.

Introduction: Thesis is the last part of graduate programs, especially general medicine program, in which students engage in research work related to their academic disciplines, and publish the results of the thesis (according to the existing regulations). Assessment of Interns’ view about existing thesis-related rules can lead to revision and qualitative and quantitative improvement of thesis process (i.e. topic approval, research skills, budgeting, thesis defense, and research line). Methods: This cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted on medical interns who defend their thesis and graduated in 2010. 82 interns were selected through census method. Data gathering was done using a researcher-made questionnaire (alpha cronbach coefficient= 0.86). Data analysis was done using descriptive statistics. Results: The Results showed the mean score of thesis topic approval process in educational group (16.92.06), thesis topic approval process in the research council (10/472/03), research skills (21/023/08), budgeting process (21/114/02), defense process (13/11/38), and research line (7/011/61). Conclusion: Based on the results, most interns had very little satisfaction. It seems that it is necessary to plan some workshops about research methodology, writing proposals, budgeting, writing a thesis and papers for interns.

Introduction: Pronouncing bad news is one of the most difficult duties of a physician. Lack of education in this field may negatively affect physician-patient relationship. These skills are not taught in our country vastly and effectively. The aim of this study was to assess knowledge and attitude of clinical teachers, family physicians and interns of Jahrom University of Medical Science about giving bad news. Methods: This study was conducted among a census sample of 40 clinical teachers, 22 family physicians, and 30 interns in 2009 in Jahrom University of Medical Sciences. A questionnaire was designed by the researcher, then its validity and reliability was determined. Data was analyzed by SPSS software using ANOVA and independent T test. Results: The average scores of knowledge and attitude were 15.96 (out of 25) and 34.43 (out of 52) among faculty members, 16.72 and 35.22 among family physicians, and 15.26 and 33.43 among interns group. Knowledge level in all 3 groups was medium and their attitudes toward training in these skills were positive. No significant difference was found between knowledge and attitude of these 3 groups (respectively: p=0.095 and p=0.548). Conclusion: According to the result of this study and considering the fact that these skills are currently learnt through inactive methods and via try & error technique, there is a real need for developing planned courses in Iranian medical universities.

Introduction: Being competent in performing clinical skills is necessary in medical profession. Acquiring essential competencies requires for time, patience, and practice in an appropriate context. Logbook is an instructional notebook in which there is a list of skills students must learn. These skills have been organized according to the opinion of faculty members of each ward and the international objectives set by ministry. The educational process could be evaluated continuously by means of these logbooks. This study was performed to evaluate the effect of using log books on clinical skills learning in cardiology ward. Methods: This quasi-experimental study was performed on 60 clerkship and internship students of cardiology ward in 2007-2008. In the first phase, students entering cardiology ward were selected as the control group. They received the usual instructions on clinical skills of the ward. In the second phase, logbooks were distributed among the next group of students as the experiment group and necessary explanations were provided for them. Students were asked to fill the required parts in the logbook and confirm them by their teacher. The educational content for both groups was the same. At the end of the course, students of each group were evaluated by their teachers using checklists for every single competency. Scores achieved for each competency were added up separately. Introduction: Considering the important role of nutrition in health, attaining a high nutritional knowledge is essential for physicians. So, this study was performed with the aim of determining the level of residents' and interns' knowledge about nutrition in Shahid Beheshti University of Medical Sciences and Health Services. Methods: Sixty six interns and 70 residents were selected randomly out of the total target population in this descriptive cross-sectional study and received the nutritional knowledge questionnaire in hospitals affiliated to the medical university. They all filled and returned the questionnaires before the end of official working hour. Data was analyzed by SPSS software using ANOVA, and chi². Results: The level of nutritional knowledge was weak in 25.3%, average in 61.3%, and good in 13.4% of the participants. But none of the participants had a very good level of nutritional knowledge. The mean score for correct answers was 50.28. Ninety three point seven percent of residents and interns had no idea about the relationship between overconsumption of Vitamin C in pregnancy and infant’s dependency to this Vitamin and 80.3% were also not aware of the relationship between overconsumption of Protein and Calcium excrete. Among the participants, 96.5% knew no comprehensive reference on nutrition and no one identified any website or journal in the field of nutrition. Conclusion: This study affirmed the results of preceding studies implicating the necessity of enhancing nutritional knowledge in medical universities' curriculum and during clinical activities.

Introduction: Predetermining practical educational objectives and confronting students with equal educational opportunities based on the objectives, thorough logbook is regarded as part of their final evaluation. Investigating the manner of completing different parts of the logbook by interns in emergency ward is the aim of this study. Methods: This descriptive cross-sectional retrospective study was performed on all logbooks filled by interns from April 2006 to May 2007 in emergency ward of Imam Khomeini Hospital. Data was analyzed by SPSS software using descriptive statistics. Results: In total, 388 internship logbooks were investigated which belonged to 221 male (56.96%) and 167 female (43.03%) interns. Considering all concerned activities, 75.98% of interns at least one time, 49.36% one time less than expected, and 32.25% completely performed, participated, or observed the activities expected in the ward. Conclusion: By using logbook in emergency ward, interns could be guided in performing activities expected in the ward but effective use of logbook requires further familiarization of interns with logbook as well as proper supervision on the manner of its completion. The present logbook needs some modifications. It is recommended to design a comprehensive logbook in order to have a uniform education throughout the entire internship course and cover all practical educational objectives.

Introduction: The prevalence of musculoskeletal and orthopedic diseases is high in outpatient visits and emergency ward. Meanwhile, evidences show that there is no appropriate and sufficient education in this regard, in the educational programs of medical students and especially orthopedic interns. The aim of this study was to determine the accomplishment of minimum learning essentials by interns in orthopedic ward of Isfahan University of Medical Sciences. Methods: This descriptive study was conducted in educational hospitals of Isfahan Medical School in April and June 2006. A 14 item questionnaire including determined minimum learning essentials in 4 fields of surgery room, emergency, ward, and clinic was developed. Forty orthopedic interns, who at least had passed 3 months of their internship course, completed the questionnaire as self-administered. The data was analyzed by SPSS software using frequency distribution. Results: All participants in this study performed the assessment of the "signs of the compartment syndrome" and "sutures" by themselves. Not all of the interns had received the needed education for casting and splint, doing different kinds of bandages, suturing open wounds and doing intra-articular injections. Conclusion: Interns could not achieve minimum learning essentials in orthopedic ward which was in accordance with previous studies. Therefore, it is necessary to implement a complete revision in educational programs of orthopedic interns such as extending the course duration, determining the task descriptions, and providing externship course.

Introduction: Clinical rounds as one of the clinical teaching methods, may cause adverse effects on patients and the medical team is able to report such problems. The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of clinical rounds on patients from medical teams' points of view. Methods: This descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted on 150 members of clinical care team including clerkship and internship students and nurses who were selected through convenient sampling method in educational hospitals affiliated to Isfahan Medical University. A questionnaire containing demo-graphic features, items asking the medical team's viewpoint about the method of running medical rounds, the list of events experienced by the patient, and medical team opinions regarding the patients' feelings toward the manner of clinical round was distributed as self-administered. The data was analyzed by SPSS software using frequency distribution, mean and standard deviation, and the comparisons were made by ANOVA. Results: The medical team believed that patients had the most satisfaction from performing procedures by interns and residents, precision and follow up in therapeutic affairs, general outcome of hospitalization, and the duration of visits. Their least satisfaction was about the number of examiners, the duration of patient's encounter with the main physician, explanation about the disease and taking the patient’s opinion into account in decision making. Conclusion: Based on the medical team's opinion, the current method of clinical rounds may cause dissatis-faction in patients and result in undesirable consequences. Revision and reforming the current situation of rounds can lead to the improvement of this process.

Introduction. Taking care of patients is a team work and in each team work the members’ performance has a direct impact on their relationship and efforts in achieving their common goal. It is necessary that medical interns as a member of health care team pay attention to the health care services provided by nurses. The purpose of this study was to determine the viewpoints of interns about nurses’ capabilities and behavior with patients and interns in teaching hospitals of Isfahan Medical University. Methods. In this descriptive study, 157 interns working in educational hospitals affiliated to Isfahan Medical University were selected by stratified random sampling method. The data collection tool was a Likert type valid and reliable questionnaire consisted of 25 questions about nurses’ performance towards patients and interns, and interns’ performance towards patients. The mean, standard deviation, t-test and spearman were used for data analysis by SPSS software. Results. The mean score of interns’ view about nurses’ performance was 3.06 out of 5. This score was 2.99 for professional skills of nurses, 3.12 regarding the nurses’ behavior towards patients and 3.14 for the nurses’ behavior towards interns. The score earned from interns’ viewpoint about their own performance towards patients was 3.32. The mean number of improper contacts between interns and nurses reported by interns in previous 5 days was 0.3. Conclusion. The overall score of interns’ view towards nurses’ performance was at an intermediate level which could be because of different reasons such as their undefined responsibilities towards nurses and patients. It is obvious that this defect could have a negative impact on patient management and team work. Therefore it is necessary to consider “the way of communicating with nurses” in the learning objectives and educational content of interns.

Introduction: Medical education in Iran has four stages: Basic Medical Science (BMS), Pathophysiology, Clinical Clerkship, and Internship. The relevance of basic medical course contents to professional practice needs is considered to be a problem in such traditional curriculum. Also, diminished retention of the content is another problem. These two problems are explored in this study. Methods: One of the national comprehensive BMS exams was given to interns. The participant's previous score in a similar (but not identical) exam was assumed as the previous knowledge state. Their attitude toward clinical relevance of each question and different BMS courses were assessed using statements with five point Likert scale. Results: 70% of participants claimed that they filled questionnaires precisely. Mean of scores in the present exam was 25% less than the previous one (four year interval). Mean scores for clinical relevance of exam items was 3.7 out of 5.Knowledge scores didn't correlate with demographic variables. Present knowledge scores were directly correlated to the previous exam score and intern's average. Score for clinical relevance of a given exam item did not correlate with the knowledge score about it. Maximum knowledge scores were for questions of Health, Histology, and Pathology. The highest scores of clinical relevance were for questions of Nutrition, Health, Physiology, Pathology, Bacteriology, Parasitology, and English language. The highest scores of clinical application were for Nutrition, Health and Physiology. There was a miss-match between interns view about clinical relevance of some BMS courses (Genetics and Medical Physics) and clinical application of their exam items. Conclusions: The causes of 25% decline in knowledge retention should be explored more. The observed miss-match between clinical relevance of some BMS courses and clinical application of exam items as well as knowledge scores suggests that BMS course contents and exams should be revised according to professional practice needs.
