Weather is defined as the current state of atmosphere in a particular place and time. There is well-known effect of weather on men, especially related to their health problems. In ancient Greece and Rome, then in European tradition, the idea that animal behavior can be read as prediction for ongoing changes in weather, was broadly present. During those times birds were also used in divination as messengers of Gods will. More scientific outlook on weather effects on animal behavior was gradually established from XVII century. This paper contains overview of current, weather-related, studies of various animals: insects, lower vertebrates, domesticated mammals and birds. The aim of this paper is to present various links between films and other arts. As a starting point the author has chosen presenting the theoretical base of the division of classical arts, their languages, materials and characters. Film is the youngest among the arts. Further, the text focuses on the problem of adaptation, in particular film adaptation. The ground thus laid allows to discuss the main topic of the paper: comparison of Call Me By Your Name the book by André Aciman and its film version of the same title directed by Luca Guadagnino. Comparative analysis is applied here to: literary and film narration, the autotelic nature of both works, the merging of literary and cinema worlds -- with reference to both the novel and the film. A lot of space is devoted to the director's attempts to enhance the aesthetic and erudite values of the work; the context for those aspects in the film are philosophy, painting and music. Besides the interdisciplinary character the paper also evokes the history of idea and the question of translation, though the latter in vestigial form, more to accentuate the problem than to make an attempt to deepen the explication. The article presents the results of the analysis of the declarations of the authorities of small and medium-sized cities in Poland regarding the need to implement adaptation measures to the effects of climate change, and an assessment of the adequacy of the planned activities in this area. As part of the study, Environmental Protection Programmes in 80 cities with a population of up to 100,000 inhabitants were analysed. In the beginning, the most important challenges that the effects of climate change pose for cities are discussed. Then the results of the research are described and discussed. The paper ends with a short summary. The obtained results are not unambiguous. On the one hand, it has been shown that the issues of environmental protection and adaptation to climate change are not among the most important priorities of the authorities of small and medium-sized cities, and the way of presenting the issue of adaptation in the analysed documents, concerning the threats caused by the effects of climate change, is not sufficient and adequate to the level of danger. On the other hand, the results show that the importance of this problem has been increasing in recent years and that the authorities of small and medium-sized towns more and more often declare the need and readiness to support adaptation measures. The smart city concept, which is a consequence of the doctrine of sustainable development and technological change, has gained popularity in the international arena over the last decade. A discussion of the world literature indicates the need for intensive efforts, both in the areas of science and business practice, to implement, monitor and develop the smart city concept. The aim of the paper is to explain the specificity of the smart city concept on the basis of a systematic literature review and to identify the process of Warsaw’s adaptation to the smart city concept. The publication uses the methodology based on a systematic review of literature pertaining to the development of the smart city concept and functioning of smart city models. The analysis, which uses case study elements, has been carried out on the basis of available reports, rankings and official documents of the city of Warsaw. As a result, city characteristics indicating the level of development of Warsaw as a smart city have been presented. The analysis explains the mechanisms of implementing smart undertakings in Warsaw, providing at the same time the basis for indicating the city’s resilience model as an adaptive model adequate for the city. The authors’ considerations, focused on the development of the smart city concept, have resulted in a proposal of a smart city model. They also reveal a research perspective focused on Polish cities. This paper explores a Russian translation of Lewis Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland made by Vladimir Nabokov in 1923. A significant aspect of its emergence relates to the fact that the target text was created when the writer and many other representatives of the Russian intelligentsia were living in exile. The starting point for the article is the hypothesis that Nabokov’s version is an adaptation. The aim of the paper is to show how adaptive procedures influence the original and what profits and losses they produce. The author focuses on two elements of the book: the names of the characters and literary allusions both filtered through the Russian culture by the translator. Their juxtaposition with the original reveals changes in the semantic layer of proper names and in the formal structure of parodied texts. Nevertheless, this “domestication” also brings a new value. It enriches the target text with an additional therapeutic function which allowed Russian expatriates and their children to deal with hardships of exile and to keep Russian canonical literary works in their minds.

The paper outlines a distinction between several allied notions related to intersemioticity, polysemioticity and translation, with examples pertaining to the indicated categories. It begins with an overview of how Roman Jakobson's concept of intersemiotic translation has been re-interpreted and broadened to account for more types of transformations and new modes of expression. Secondly, non-identity of referentiality and transmutation is indicated. Next, the notion of intersemiotic complementation is proposed for the instances that involve adding a new code to an existing work rather than changing its code. A distinction is also drawn between intersemiotic translation and intersemiotic aspects or contexts of interlingual translation (of a polysemiotic work or a verbal text which refers to non-discursive media). It is emphasized that it is this last category that deserves the attention of translation scholars, and some particular areas of interest are enumerated. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The article focuses on three different versions of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland created by the very same Polish translator, Antoni Marianowicz (1924–2003), in the second half of the twentieth century. The paper initially describes his unabridged and frequently reprinted 1955 Polish translation of Alice, then discusses the musical adaptation from 1975, to finally concentrate on the third version, i.e. his 1996 translation of a picture book originally published by Disney corporation. The subsequent Polish versions of Alice were published at an interval of almost exactly twenty years, most probably making Marianowicz the only translator who retold Alice’s adventures in Polish at three different points in the twentieth century. The article highlights the distinguishing features of the three Polish Alices, explains what other texts, apart from Carroll’s original, these versions are indebted to, as well as examines the possibilities they offered to the translator and the ways in which they limited the translator’s imagination. Film is one of the media which, due to their accessibility and popularity, can be easily used in today’s world as a tool supporting integration and the process of integration into a foreign culture, which is often very distant (geographically and mentally). The paper is based on the assumption that a foreign culture cannot be learned, but that one can get to know it and to learn as much as possible “about it”. The aim of the text is to indicate which criteria should be taken into account when selecting films intended for immigrants and refugees, and how these films may support the process of adaptation to the Polish culture. The study presents the theoretical basis and psychometric properties of the Sources of Teacher Efficacy Questionnaire (STEQ), by C. K. W. Hoi and co-authors in the Polish adaptation. The sample included  teachers. Confirmatory factor analysis conducted showed a good fit of the four-factor model. Analyses confirmed the reliability and validity of the scale. The major contribution to explaining the sources of teachers' sense of efficacy comes from experiencing mastery. The concept of resilience has gained much attention in recent academic and political discussion. However, its application to specific sectors, such as retail, is rather scarce. The aim of this paper is to present the concept of resilience and to analyse its applicability to the retail sector within the context of the town centre. The paper proposes a possible analytical framework for adaptively resilient retail centres that links the performance of retail centres to underlying development paths, the pre-shock position in the adaptive cycle, and other factors that drive their evolutionary reorganisation. The proposed framework has a practical application for spatial and urban planning and can be beneficial to various stakeholders and practitioners, including retailers, policy makers, and town centre managers.

Horticulture and agriculture are sectors particularly vulnerable to the effects of climate change. Most factors of agricultural production, including the length of the growing season, the amount and distribution of precipitation, the occurrence and timing of spring frosts, maximum and minimum temperatures, etc., are modified by the effects of climate change. At the same time, these sectors are a significant source of greenhouse gas emissions: methane and nitrous oxide. Reducing this emission can be difficult, because it is permanently related to cultivation and breeding practices. Nevertheless, achieving climate neutrality and stopping climate change will not be possible without the participation of agriculture and horticulture in this process. The article presents: the challenges posed to agricultural production by the EU climate policy; the analysis of the Polish agricultural strategy in terms of its integration with the objectives of this policy; the proposed actions that should be implemented to ensure that Polish horticulture and agriculture can effectively participate in achieving climate neutrality; the results of research conducted among fruit growers from the Sandomierz region. The aim of the article is to discuss the challenges faced by Polish horticulture resulting from the EU climate policy and to present the results of research on the knowledge, awareness and opinions of a selected group of fruit growers concerning climate change and to assess their readiness to take action; 101 randomly selected fruit producers from the Sandomierz region participated in the study. Introduction. According to global reports, laryngeal cancer is the most frequent type of head and neck cancers. The number of patients for whom laryngectomy is the only effective method of treatment is not decreasing. As a result of both the disease and surgery, there is a need for the patient to adapt to the new life conditions. Aim. The aim of this paper is to determine how well postlaryngectomy patients are adapted to living with cancer and what variables influence their level of adaptation. Material and method. The research involved 92 patients (65 men and 27 women) with laryngeal cancer who had been operated on 6-9 months earlier, not showing signs of recurrence of the disease. Demographical data was collected for all patients and psychological response to the disease was evaluated by means of Mini-MAC (Mental Adjustment to Cancer Scale) questionnaires. The following domains were assessed: Anxious Preoccupation, Fighting Spirit, Fatalism, Helpless-Hopelessness, as well as passive vs. active way of coping with the disease. Results. The respondents present a moderate level of adaptation. Results for the Anxious Preoccupation Scale (21.8) and Helpless-hopelessness Scale (21.4) were highest, while the ones for the Fighting Spirit Strategy (19.8) and the Fatalism Strategy (17.7) were lower (the differences between the strategies were statistically significant). The respondents obtained significantly higher results in the passive style of coping with cancer. A higher level of adaptation to disease has been proven better in women, people with higher education, those living in permanent relationships and raising children. Conclusions. Post-laryngectomy patients display a passive style of coping with cancer. The obtained results improve the knowledge on factors contributing to using a certain strategy of adaptation to disease, which can be valuable in designing programs of psychological support. The paper notes the urgency of the problem of deeper understanding and research of the relationship between alexithymia and somatic diseases, that may be important for more effective diagnosis, prevention and prediction of professional care for people with psychosomatic diseases. Analysis of the characteristics of people with alexithymia and manifestations of psychosomatic diseases will help to form common criteria that are important to consider at the first visit to a doctor or psychologist. The purpose of the article is to identify the relationship between alexithymia and personality traits in individuals with a tendency to somatization of psychological problems. The following methods were used to achieve the tasks: theoretical analysis of the scientific literature, psychodiagnostic and statistical methods corresponding to the research tasks. The study involved 61 people, 34 women and 27 men among them, voluntarily and anonymously participated in the study. As a result of the study, the concept of alexithymia and the coverage of this phenomenon in the modern scientific literature are analyzed. The processing of the literature accumulated on this topic made it possible to draw conclusions about the history of the study of alexithymia, its characteristics and manifestations, connections, this phenomenon has with other psychological constructs, as well as to make assumptions about the future direction of this phenomenon. In the course of empirical research, it was established that there are various connections, in particular the psychological characteristics of persons prone to psychosomatic manifestations. The connection between alexithymia and depression, general distress as a reaction to life’s difficulties, as well as irritability and insufficiently formed regulation of the emotional sphere was revealed. Conclusion. The analysis made it possible to draw conclusions about the characteristics inherent in individuals prone to psychosomatic disorders. Continuing to develop and explore solutions to understanding emotions and emotional self-expression would be interesting from a gender perspective. Further study of alexithymia and somatization and their gender and gender characteristics, in our opinion, should be associated with the completion of a relatively new phenomenon of normative male alexithymia.

The article's idea is to transfer the categories of magical realism to film studies. Major theoretical literary concepts concerning this tendency are quoted, as well as contextual reflections on film realism and fantasy. The next part of the paper constitutes the presentation of three distinguished trends related to the discussed phenomenon on chosen examples. These are literary adaptations, films from the amateur cinema field and a category of pictures balancing on the line between reality and fantastic, inappropriately included into magical realism by amateurs. The author focuses on two modes of audiovisual translation – dubbing and voice-over. The aim of this paper is to dispel the myth of absolute cultural non-translatability, and excerpts from films about super heroes are examined to this purpose. An audiovisual translator faces many challenges, and translation strategies for texts characterised by cultural elements are not only helpful but indispensable in facilitating the translation process. One such strategy is adaptation, which proves to be highly effective and contributes to the positive reception of films by their intended viewers. The correct interpretation of the cultural fragments determines the accessibility of the language and can contribute to enhancing the humorous effect in the Polish language version. The analyzed movie excerpts demonstrate that the Polish versions contain creative and sometimes unexpected translational ideas for adapting the source-culture elements to the target culture, resulting in dialogue that is appreciated by Polish viewers.

Mexico has been affected by extreme events such as storms, hurricanes, floods, and wildfires in the past ten years. In this paper, we will attempt to respond to the following questions: What are the climate change effects on the architectural heritage of Maya housing, and what are the adaptation and resilience practices of Maya housing and its environment? Maya houses have major climate variability adaptation potential. The building of a Maya home is conducted without architects, but with the intensive labor required for the planning, organization, technology and systematic knowledge of the climate on the part of the various artisans involved. These efforts, which we can observe to this day, implied invention, innovation and adaptation, as well as the oral transmission of knowledge for locating and orienting the home, preparing the terrain, seeking out and preparing construction materials, the actual work of building the house and conducting the related construction rituals. There exist various forms of adaptation, among them the form, design, materials and technology used. Here we review the housing’s adaptation and resilience to floods, and both water management and control. The principal objective of this text is to evaluate the adaptative and resilient processes of Maya housing to the effects of climate change, considering the principal criteria / indicators that might affect the habitat’s internal environment, its constructive structure, the materials and the inhabitant’s comfort, but without changing the Maya house’s basic design patterns.

Background The interest among researchers and practitioners in job crafting has been growing for the last dozen of years. Job crafting refers to behaviors that employees engage in to align aspects of their jobs with their own skills and needs. The aim of this paper was to analyze psychometric properties of the Polish version of a job crafting measure – the Job Crafting Scale (JCS). Material and Methods The original JCS consists of 21 items and has 4 subscales: Increasing Structural Job Resources , Increasing Social Job Resources , Increasing Challenging Job Demands , and Decreasing Hindering Job Demands . Confirmatory factor analysis, internal consistency analysis, theoretical validity analysis and test–retest stability analysis were carried out among 249 white collar workers who use information and communication technology (ICT) in their daily work. Multigroup confirmatory factor analysis and invariance test were carried out among 228 white collar workers using ICT and additionally working in a team for most of the week. Results The Polish version of the JCS displays satisfactory internal consistency, theoretical validity, and test–retest stability. The results of the confirmatory factor analysis showed a 4-dimensional structure of the JCS. Four items were excluded from the Polish version of the JCS because of low factor loadings. The results of invariance test showed that factor loadings were invariant across groups. Conclusions The Polish version of the JCS consists of 17 items and – like the original scale – has 4 subscales. Additional studies are recommended to confirm the internal structure of the JCS and measurement invariance across different occupational groups. Med Pr. 2019;70(4):445–57

The publication is devoted to the consideration of the mechanisms of the adaptive capabilities of the kidney in norm, based on epigenetic control systems of protein biosynthesis. This paper emphasizes the high plasticity of epigenetic mechanisms. The thesis that the epigenetic mechanisms have a high degree of plasticity and perform an important function in adaptive reactions of the kidney, is illustrated by data on the epigenetic transformation of key proteins of various nephron sections. In addition, brief information is given on the possible involvement of epigenetic mechanisms in adaptive rearrangements of arginine vasopressin and natriuretic peptides. High plasticity, accuracy and power of epigenetic systems regulating the adaptive capabilities of the kidney are emphasized.

In present day post-crisis period, business entities are more interested in maximizing of financial results than ever. Now we can state the revitalization of construction. However, not at all times, there is a profit of construction enterprises according to the results of business activities. As a result of the sample analysis of the financial statements of 63 construction enterprises of Ukraine in 2017, the main activities of which are construction and other specialized construction work, it has been established that according to available data, 21 enterprises in 2017 worked unprofitable, 42 – profitable. If there is a profit, there is a need for proper accounting and reporting. These issues are partly covered, and some problems have been solved in dissertation papers defended in Ukraine in recent years. In order to accomplish the tasks, it is extremely important to understand the economic essence of profit. We recommend to carry out the retrospective analysis of the approaches to the interpretation of profit by representatives of different accounting schools, in particular, Italian, French, German, and Anglo-American. The analysis of profit definitions, conducted in the study in three areas (accounting, analysis and audit, finance, enterprise economics and economic theory), indicates that there is no unified approach to the consideration of its essence among scientists, the concept of profit is multidimensional. The article outlines the author's approach to understanding the essence of profit and identifies the concept of "profit of a construction company".

Spiritual Combat (Combattimento spiritual) by Lorenzo Scupoli, and Невидимая брань (῾Ο ᾽Αόρατος Πόλεμος) by Nikodemus the Hagiorite and Theophan the Recluse: Adaptation Strategies of Spiritual Combat in the Eastern Church The purpose of the paper is to offer a general discussion of the strategy of adapting Lorenzo Scupoli’s Combattimento spiritual, which was created in the Christian West, to the doctrine, spirituality and sensitivity of the Christian East, and in particular to 19th-century Russian Orthodoxy. Two translations of the work into Russian were used as a basis for observation: one of them was taken from the Italian original without the intention of adaptation; the other (by Theophan the Recluse) was done with the intention of adaptation and its basis was the Greek text already adapted by Nicodemus the Hagiorite. Analysis shows a certain “symphony” of the strategy of adapting the content and language in both the texts: the text that was created as a translation from the Italian original without the intention of adaptation, and the text that was the result of a two-stage adaptation in Greek and then in Russian. In terms of content, the mystical and ascetic assumptions that were developed in the West in the devotio moderna trend were rejected in favor of turning towards the Holy Fathers’ tradition. In the language there was a turn to Orthodox Orthodoxy by the use of means that refer to the doctrine of hesychasm, which was recognized in the 14th century and might even be said to have become a foundation of Eastern spirituality. The result of the content and language harmonization in the adaptation of Theophan the Recluse is the complete abolition of all possible references to Western Christianity. Strategie adaptacji tekstu w Kościele wschodnim Celem artykułu jest wykazanie w ogólnym zarysie strategii adaptacji tekstu dzieła Lorenzo Scupoliego Combattimento spiritual, powstałego na chrześcijańskim Zachodzie, do doktryny, duchowości i wrażliwości chrześcijańskiego Wschodu, a w szczególności do rosyjskiego prawosławia XIX wieku. Jako podstawę do obserwacji wykorzystano teksty dwóch przekładów dzieła na język rosyjski: jednego z nich dokonano z oryginału włoskiego bez zamiaru adaptacji, drugiego zaś – autorstwa Teofana Pustelnika – dokonano z zamiarem adaptacji i to z tekstu greckiego już adaptowanego przez Nikodema Hagiorytę. Porównanie tych tekstów ukazuje pewną „symfonię” strategii adaptacji treści i języka tekstu powstałego jako tłumaczenie z oryginału włoskiego bez zamiaru adaptacji i tekstu będącego wynikiem dwustopniowej adaptacji, kolejno w przekładzie greckim i rosyjskim. W zakresie treści odrzucono mistyczno-ascetyczne założenia wypracowane na Zachodzie w nurcie devotio moderna na rzecz zwrotu w stronę tradycji Ojców. W języku zaś poprzez użycie środków nawiązujących do hezychazmu, którego nauki zostały uznane w XIV wieku i które stały się wręcz fundamentem wschodniej duchowości, również dokonano zwrotu ku prawosławnej ortodoksji. Wynikiem współgrania adaptacji treści i języka w redakcji Teofana Pustelnika jest całkowite zniesienie wszelkich możliwych odniesień do chrześcijaństwa zachodniego.

Film is one of the media which, due to their accessibility and popularity, can be easily used in today’s world as a tool supporting integration and the process of integration into a foreign culture, which is often very distant (geographically and mentally). The paper is based on the assumption that a foreign culture cannot be learned, but that one can get to know it and to learn as much as possible “about it”. The aim of the text is to indicate which criteria should be taken into account when selecting films intended for immigrants and refugees, and how these films may support the process of adaptation to the Polish culture.

Background The aim of the paper is to present the Polish adaptation of the Humor Climate Questionnaire (HCQ), designed to measure humor as organizational climate feature. Material and Methods The authors employed back-translation and independent judges method to choose the best version of the translated items. The psychometric properties of HCQ were estimated on the basis of 2 samples: the basic group of employees (N = 217) and the group of employees who had completed the survey twice (N = 55). Results The results of statistical analyses proved that HCQ is a reliable tool. Explorative Factor Analysis supported the 4-factor structure of the original method’s theoretical model. The validity of the subscales is high, Cronbach’s α varied from 0.8 to 0.9. The directions and values of intercorrelations between subscales were similar to those of the English version. The Humor Climate Questionnaire is a relatively time-stable tool (r = 0.44–0.74). Conclusions Polish adaptation is reliable and applicable for cross-sectional studies. The obtained results are comparable to the characteristics of the original version. However, the results of factor analysis show that the data do not fully fit the theoretical model. The article deals with the problem of adaptation of “internally displaced people” (for example, refugees from war zones in eastern Ukraine) to the university environment by means of students’ self-government. According to the survey among IDP students who were transferred from other higher education institutions, it was found that the most favourable field for the development of constructive relations between displaced students and “domestic” students of the academic community of the university could be created by a system of students’ self-government. The organizational and pedagogical conditions of adaptation of IDP students to the university environment were defined. The paper proves that students’ self-government in a variety of forms and organizational levels can ensure successful adaptation of displaced students at a new place of study.

Background: Self-efficacy refers to different spheres of human functioning and to different tasks, including teaching activity. It is regarded as an important personal resource related to coping with stress. This paper was aimed at presenting psychometric properties of the Norwegian Teachers Self-Efficacy Scale (NTSES), related to these beliefs in the group of teachers. Material and Methods: Psychometric properties of the scale were evaluated on the basis of the data obtained from 404 teachers of elementary and middle schools. Results: Our analyses of exploratory and confirmatory factor revealed a 3-dimensional structure, but not a 6-dimensional structure of NTSES as obtained in the original Norwegian study. They also showed high reliability and construct validity coefficients. Teachers self-efficacy was positively correlated with general self-efficacy, internal locus of control and negatively with job burnout. Conclusions: Although NTSES can be used in the study of Polish teachers, this should be done with great caution and the measure of global index of NTSES should be used. Migration, education and work. Students from Ukraine in Andrzej Frycz Modrzewski Krakow University The paper presents results of the survey carried out by the author among students – citizens of Ukraine – who study at Andrzej Frycz Modrzewski Krakow University. The survey has been aimed not only at social and demographic profiling of the group, but also at outlining dominant reasons that encouraged young Ukrainian citizens to choose Poland, Krakow, and the Frycz Modrzewski University as their education centre; at assessing attractiveness of the studying, adaptation in a foreign country, contacts with the Poles both inside and outside of the academy. Based on the results of the survey the attractiveness of studies in Poland results from the membership of Poland in the European Union, recognition of the high level of education in Poland, relatively low costs of studies compared to the other European countries, and geographical and cultural proximity of Ukraine and Poland.

The author attempts to investigate connections and interdependencies between periphery countries and the globalisation process, including the attitude of these countries to unification blocs, such as the European integration project. The basic research tool used in this work is a systemic analysis, as well as the core-periphery method, derived from social sciences. Its fundamental hypothesis is that the decline of the liberal architecture of the globe may translate into the periphery's tendency to abandon real convergence in favour of the fragmentary imitation of supranational bodies, potentially leading to intensified disintegration tendencies within phenomena, such as the consolidation of Europe. In the past, the powerless core of the community only contemplated the imitative Europeanisation of marginal territories. Today, however - because the idea to construct a homogeneous polity has collapsed - postulates of "multi-speed" integration can lead to the reconstruction of the historical division into the core and periphery of the old continent. In 1910, the Warsaw-based publisher Michał Arct released the first Polish translation of Lewis Carroll's Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. For many years this translation by Adela S. was thought to have been lost, and it has only recently drawn the attention of scholars. The translator, however, has not yet been identified. Adamczyk-Garbowska suggests that the pseudonym might stand for Adela Silberstein, a philosopher who wrote a pioneering study in aesthetics. Having outlined Silberstein's life and work, Adamczyk-Garbowska offers a concise analysis of the translation. The reason why this innovative text failed to take root in the Polish literary polysystem, she suggests, may be that it diverged too far from the conventions of Polish children's literature at the time.
