This article presents a history and stylistic analysis of the avant-garde furnished apartment-studio of the Italian Futurist Giacomo Balla (1871-1958), commonly known as Casa Balla. The decor and the painterly interior design of the flat portray the utopian premise of 1920s Futurism, which aimed at a modern synthesis of the arts and their complete integration into reality, in an intimate way. The author of the essay describes the current state of the "Balla House", which, after many years of oblivion, has been restored and opened to the public in a new arrangement in 2021. Effective presentation is a skill wanted by many. This competence is of great relevance for scientific lectures and can be transferred to other speech situations such as student seminar papers or oral presentations. How to achieve the intended speech effects and how to act rhetorically competently is often explained in the scientific literature. However, this monograph is also devoted to the unintended effects of speech, taking into account their causes.

We normally hardly notice the mass-produced paper products that pass through our hands on a daily basis, which we then recycle. In fact it has recently been predicted that books printed on paper will be replaced by digital formats. However, paper endures and specialist craft papers are now being produced in increasing quantities, especially valued by artists and conservators, but also by tourists visiting paper-producing areas around the world. Paper is therefore flourishing even in our computer and mobile-phone focused world. One of the areas benefiting from this revival is the Himalayas. As well as serving the tourist trade these products are now exported world-wide, as they were when paper first arrived in Europe in the eleventh century. There are even organisations that run Tibetan-style paper making workshops in Amer­ica. This paper focuses on the papermaking revival in Tibet (China), Nepal, Bhutan and Sikkim (India). Using information gained from visits to producers, middle men, as well as retail and export operations, it seeks to compare the economic and social factors influencing the revival, including conservation issues. The conclusion highlights the fact that, even in the twenty first century, hand-crafted items still play an important rôle in our lives.

In the academic year 2020/2021 the Jagiellonian University Faculty of Law and Administration initiated a series of scholarly meetings devoted to legal heritage. Nine meetings were held, during which eight papers were presented. This paper has been inspired by Jacques Derrida’s statement revealing that his philosophical writings were mostly devoted to paper. “I have the impression,” he said, “(the impression!—what a word, already) that I have never had any other subject basically, paper, paper, paper” (Derrida, 2005, p. 41). My paper addresses this thrice repeated noun as a name not so much of a material object on which we scribble, but as a space between the spirit and the letter, a space which turns out to be ineradicable even at the time of paper’s alleged eradication in the e-textual age, which may be called a fin de livre culture. This end of the book, I argue, is a highly provisional declaration of the beginning of a paperless era of digitized media, which are not quite capable of eradicating various traces and spectres of paper haunting their own theorizations.

The article comprises a set of observations, as well as reflections, on broadly conceived artistry of books and it is written from the point of view of an art historian, as well as a book researcher and a bibliophile. Diverse aspects of the artistry of books have been discussed, among them the obvious ones related to the fi eld of visual arts, as well as ones that tend to be underestimated, i.e., those of materials (paper, parchment, leather) serving as base surface to the text, illustrations or bookbinding decoration. In each case the problem is scrutinized by tracing the 'way' leading from the 'inside' of the book to its 'outside.' Hence the first objects of analysis are parchment and paper (including different grades of decorative papers); then the research focus is shifted to other aspects, namely, writing (handwriting and printed text), page compositions, illumination and book graphics, illustration printing, graphic books, book bindings, and finally new trends in the art of the book. The Middle Ages 'feed' on the book. The culture of this period was shaped by Christianity, which is sometimes called a 'religion of the book.' After the decline of the Roman Empire together with the disappearance of statehood and the expansion of the illiterate barbarian peoples, the only remaining institutional mainstay of culture was the Church, which executed its mission on the basis of books. Apart from the 'book of books'--the Bible, there were liturgical books as well as a rich literary tradition of commenting the Bible and forming the Christian doctrine and its apology. In the Middle Ages, the book was therefore both an object of cult and the main creative factor of culture. The Church created a network of schools and, as a consequence of their development, the university. At first, books were produced in monasteries where scriptoria were founded as centers of literary culture, supplying schools, churches and individual recipients with manuscripts. Together with the development of schools and the founding of universities in the 13th century, the production of books was taken over by lay people, becoming the source of their livelihood. Systems of text copying developed: writing under dictation or the pecia system. Created by artisans and scholars, the mediaeval codex was the work of many hands. The production of a codex involved the manufacture of parchment or paper, toilsome work of a copyist and an illuminator, as well as the effort of a bookbinder who supplied the codex with a (frequently richly decorated) binding. Handwritten books were eventually supplanted by printed ones. The history of books is also connected to the development of writing (with its most mature form, called the Carolingian minuscule, codified in the 8th century). Mediaeval manuscript collections are studied by various disciplines, e.g. bibliology, librarianship, archivistics, manuscript studies (which include codicology, as well as palaeography and brachygraphy). In Poland, every citizen statistically produces about 300 kg of garbage per year, including more than 80 kg of waste paper. Only a third of waste paper products is reprocessed. In connection with the entry into force of the Act on maintaining cleanliness and order in municipalities there is a need to recover more recyclable materials, including recycled paper. Recovery of waste paper intended to reduce the amount of waste in landfill sites, reducing the felling of trees, as well as reducing the amount of sewage and solid waste in paper mills. The paper presents basic information about the paper industry in Poland and worldwide and the paper production process. It also shows types and characteristics of waste paper and collects data on the processing of waste paper products and product development directions for processing of waste paper products. The article deals with technology and conservation issues concerning Leon Wyczółkowski’s six portraits from the Jagiellonian University Museum at Collegium Maius. The characteristics of damage related to the type of ground is discussed. Non-typical canvas grounds sprinkled with woolen and cotton fibre, the so called velour canvas, are described, along with conservation methods. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

An analysis of mortality in a cohort of workers employed in the pulp and paper industry, carried out by the authors of this presentation several years ago, indicated an increase of 22% in the risk of mortality from lung cancer. This risk decreased by only 4% after taking account of smoking. The results obtained then were considered as sufficient to undertake further studies aimed at identifying specific occupational factors responsible for an increased risk for mortality from lung cancer in the population under study. The nested case-control study, in which cases (of lung cancer) and controls were selected from the same cohort observed earlier, was approved as the most suitable method for achieving the aforesaid aim. The study covered 79 cases of deaths from lung cancer confirmed by histological and cytological or radiological examinations, and 237 'healthy' controls matched in the ratio of one to three, taking into account gender, date of birth and date of employment. A group of experts carried out in-depth analysis of exposure to harmful factors in each case of death and in each control. Using a questionnaire, specially developed for this purpose, detailed data on smoking habits among persons under study were collected. Odds ratio was used as a measure of a relative risk for death from lung cancer. A crude relative risk and risk adjusted by eliminating the effect of smoking, applying the model of conditional logistic regression, were calculated for individual exposure factors. Smoking proved to be a significant causal factor responsible for the development of lung cancer in the cohort studied. That was evidenced by relative risk accounting for 12.9 for smokers in relation to non-smokers and an enhanced risk with the increasing number of cigarettes smoked daily, the number of smoking years and an accumulated dose. The study does not confirm a hypothesis that chemical factors specific of the pulp and paper industry exert a significant effect on the risk of death from lung cancer. Odds ratios, crude and adjusted for smoking, were lower than one in all distinguished categories of exposure.

The effect of occupational exposure on the circulatory system disorders was evaluated in 802 workers (675 men and 127 women). Occupational histories were analysed, as well as physical and X-ray examinations, laboratory tests (fasting blood cholesterol, triglycerides and glucose) and ECGs were performed. In doubtful cases echocardiography and stress tests on an ergonometer were carried out. Ischaemic heart disease was diagnosed in 1.37% and symptoms suggesting this disease in 6.48% of workers. The incidence of hypertension, anginal pain and dysrhythmias reported were significantly related to workers' age and duration of employment. Smoking, obesity, hypercholesterolaemia and positive family history were found to be most frequent risk factors. Arterial hypertension was diagnosed in 9.48% of workers. Non-occupational factors seem to be mainly responsible for the circulatory system disorders, however, the effects of occupational factors occurring in the cellulose and paper industry which may accelerate the development of ischaemic heart disease, arterial hypertension and dysrhythmias cannot be excluded.

After five successive years of observation the authors present a verified evaluation of the delayed health effects in the pulp and paper industry workers (with particular regard to mortality from malignant neoplasms). The cohort studied consisted of 10,460 workers employed for at least 12 months between 1967 and 1990 in the plants manufacturing sulfate pulp, paper, board and paper products. Subjects were assigned to three subcohorts according to the work areas: 1. pulp mill workers; 2. paper mill workers (paper and board as well as their products); 3. other workers. The workers were enrolled in the subcohort if they were employed for at least one year in one of these departments. One subject could be included in more than one subcohort. The vital status of the cohort was determined through a variety of sources over an observation period of 28 yrs (1967-95). Mortality data were analysed in terms of cause-specific standardized mortality ratios (SMRs) with expected deaths count based on the national mortality rates in Poland. The results of a twenty three-year cohort observation, published earlier, showed the lowered overall mortality (explained by a "healthy worker effect") and the excess of deaths from malignant neoplasms for some sites (peritoneum, prostate, brain). Due to a small number of deaths recorded, kind of exposure and its duration, were left out of the analysis. The results presented in this paper, obtained after five successive years of the male cohort observation, showed an excess of deaths from cancers of the respiratory tract and peritoneum. In the female cohort an excess of brain cancers was found. Only an excessive mortality from malignant neoplasms of the respiratory system was coherent with the exposure to higher concentrations of wood, paper and board dust. An excess mortality from diseases of the circulatory system was found in both males and females employed in paper production.

A cohort study was designed to evaluate the risk of death from malignant neoplasms among pulp and paper workers. This paper presents the evaluation of death risk among workers engaged only in the production of paper, paperboard and paper products. The cohort study covered 1,322 males and 1,914 females employed for, at least, one year in a big pulp and paper mill during the period 1968-90. The study of exposure to harmful factors revealed that concentrations of paper and paperboard dusts in this mill exceeded hygienic standards. The analysis of death risk by causes and gender of those under study was based on standardized mortality rate (SMR) calculated using the method of person-year observation. The general population of Poland was used as reference. The results do not confirm excess mortality from lung, stomach and hematopoietic cancers in paper mill workers reported by other authors. However, an elevated risk of bladder cancer in males (SMR = 491, two deaths) and brain cancer in females (SMR = 353, two deaths) was observed. Both SMR values were not statistically significant. Because of small number of deaths, risk according to exposure and latency was not evaluated.

Mortality among workers in the Polish pulp and paper industry was evaluated in retrospective cohort study of 10460 workers who had been employed continuously for at least one year between 1968 and 1990 in the factory producing sulphate pulp, paper, board and paper products. A standardized mortality ratio (SMR) analysis was used to compare death rates for the exposure group with Polish national rates. For all the subjects death due to all causes and all malignant neoplasms were lower than the number expected. The only significantly increased risks were those of malignant neoplasm of brain among women (4 cases, SMR = 318) and of retroperitoneum and peritoneum among men (2 cases, SMR = 659), exposed to high level of wood dust and irritant sulphur compounds. The authors could not find any etiological explanation of the excessive mortality from brain and peritoneum cancers.

The pulp mill workers are exposed to substances suspected of carcinogenic effect during production and bleaching of chemical paper-pulp. In order to assess the risk of death from malignant neoplasm, a cohort study covering 1,432 males and 546 females, employed in the sulfate pulp mills of a big cellulose and paper plant, was carried out. Those persons had worked in pulp mills during the years 1967-1990 for, at least, one year. The analysis of risk by causes and gender of those under study was based on standard mortality rate (SMR) calculated using the method of person-year observation. The general population of Poland was used as reference. Significant excess mortality from malignant neoplasm of peritoneum (SMR = 2530) and prostate (SMR = 854) was observed among males, however, the number of observed deaths in these groups was small. Excess female mortality was insignificant. It is rather doubtful whether an increased risk of death from some neoplasms, observed in this group (in this phase of exposure identification) could be linked with occupational exposure.

The study covered the work environment of a big plant producing sulfate cellulose, paper and paperboard. Measurements of chemical substance concentrations, performed by a local plant laboratory during the years 1976-1991, were analysed with reference to production departments and particular workplaces. Out of 37 substances under study, 16 were found in the air of workplaces. Their concentrations exceeded periodically hygienic standards. The most frequent excess of TLV applied to such compounds as wood dust (including hard beechwood), non-organic dusts containing 2-50% of crystalline silica and below 2% of silica, welding fumes, furfuryl aldehyde, sulfur dioxide, phenol and hydrogen sulfide. A computer-aided registrer of hygienic data facilitated the follow-up of dynamics of exposure to toxic compounds of workers employed at given workplaces.

Papers used for food packing were studied for formaldehyde migration from them by the colorimetric method with acetylacetone. The studied material comprised 14 samples of paper of Polish or foreign production: pergamenous paper, offset and sulphite papers and one sample from waste paper imported from Germany. Formaldehyde migration from these samples differed but never exceeded 1 mg/dm2, with the exception of the recycled paper from which it was 1.77 mg/dm2.

The results of various epidemiological research indicate that workers in the pulp and paper industry have an increased risk of developing and dying of malignant cancer with a specific location. The paper discusses recent studies in the area. The findings point to an increased risk of stomach cancer in workers occupationally exposed to pulp produced in the sulfite process. Workers making paper and cardboard are especially at risk for lung cancer. Some researchers signal a higher risk of lymphatic system cancer and stoma cancer. On the basis of existing data on exposure in the pulp and paper industry, it is impossible to determine the exact effects of exposure to a given compound or chemical. Assessment of exposure at particular work areas and analysis of data using the job exposure matrix is necessary. This should provide more information about cancerogenic compounds in the pulp and paper industry.

The penetrability of the ionizing radiation through the matter makes possible the sterilization of the medical devices in the packed form by radiation method. The effect of the radiation should not bring any destructive changes in the material used for the package. In this paper have been discussed the results of the investigations of the one--and multilayer packaging materials from the point of view their utility for the radiation sterilization purposes. The changes of the useful parameters of the investigated materials have been determined in the dependence on the absorbed dose immediately after irradiation and the period of the durable keeping after the sterilization. The results of the mechanical investigations in the correlation to the results of the microbiological effects of the sterilized materials enabled to draw practical conclusions concerned the usability of the particular packages.

Examined--by means of a Starkiewicz's hand localizer--were 170 right-hand workers of a paper factory working in conditions of excessive noise and high temperature of the surroundings. Analyzed were 140 persons tested 4 times in the period of each production shift (6.00-14.00; 14.00-22.00, and 22.00-6.00). The analysis showed the maximal efficacy of the visual function of the hand localization in the range of the right-hand and in the course of the night shift in both age groups.

Utilization of ionizing radiation for the sterilization purposes enables the sterilization of dressing materials in packed form together with the protecting packages. This procedure secures advantageous conditions for prolongation of storage time of manufactured articles in the sterile state. In this work the results of six years investigations dealing with the sterility of dressings sterilized by 60Co gamma-irradiation and packed in one--and multilayer packaging materials were shown. After sterilization those materials were storaged in various temperature conditions.
