It is assumed that in the case of contact languages, it is the nonverbal context of use of these languages that may be the key factor in determining the nature of each language. Contact languages, perhaps even to a greater extent than larger or more common, the so called national languages, may establish the identity of the speech communities that use them. The text presents also selected ways in which contact languages arise, adding to the types of languages known to science, such as endogenous and exogenous contact languages, a new name for the category of languages, which are isogenic contact languages.

This article offers insight into the generic profile of news media discourse (O’Keeffe 2006:1, Silverstein 2005:7, Van Dijk 2008:94, Kopytowska 2013:379) based on the (Western) online news coverage during the first day of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022. It is believed that the generic value of news reportings is realised in patterns which underlie discourse order (Foucault 1972:49), generate its cultural representations (Silverstein 1975:157, Sherzer 1983:11, Chilton 2004:48, Bazerman 2020:152), and construct its social reality (Foley 1997:24, Langacker 2008:21). Advancing the concept of collocates as a tool for establishing lexical patterns in online news reports, examined through a referential lens of anthropological pragmatics (Chruszczewski 2011:50), this paper provides an integrated approach which combines the quantitative method of a concordance-informed discourse analysis (Baker 2006:92) and a qualitative approach which presents how text provides for the context of use through the dimension of media framing (Anshori/Pawito/Tri Kartono/Hastjarjo 2022, Goffman 1986:26).

The purpose of this paper is to present the concept of linguistic memory studies, developed by Wojciech Chlebda, as a research program of modern linguistics. Wojciech Chlebda assumes that memory, both individual and collective, is strongly linked to language, that is, it participates both in the forming of memory content and in its material expression: its externalizing in verbal narrations (and, more broadly, semiotic narrations). In this context, he identifies the following challenges facing linguistic memory studies: description and classification of linguistic exponents of memory, description of the process of mapping collective memories, and research on collective oblivion. For many years of the existence of the Soviet Union, the status of the Russian language was semi-official, although it played a large role in the public space. Only the act on the Languages of the Nations of the USSR of 1990 approved its status as an official language in the entire territory of the USSR. After the collapse of the Soviet Union, its former republics began to shape their own language policies, guided by national interests, considering the current linguistic situation and historical conditions. The effect of these activities was the diversified status of the Russian language (as state, official, inter-ethnic communication, national minority or foreign). The main purpose of the article is to present the differences in the status of the Russian language in the post-Soviet countries, primarily in the formal and legal aspect. An additional question was whether the legal status of the Russian language reflected its actual position in public and social life in the individual countries. This paper explores the interrelationships between religious attitudes, ethnic and linguistic identities, and geopolitical preferences in three geopolitical fault-line cities in Eastern Ukraine - Mariupol, Kharkiv, and Dnipro. The research is based on data taken from a survey and the associated descriptive statistics and correlation analysis. The findings suggest that the religious divide in Eastern Ukraine does not generate additional division but instead strengthens the existing divide, which is known to be formulated in terms of geopolitical as opposed to languageor ethnicity-based categories, although language and ethnicity do have an influence on geopolitical preferences. Moreover, civic-national identity appears to be more relevant than ethnic-national identity to understanding the religious fault-line in Eastern Ukraine. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The climate crisis is no longer just a question of crisis, but a question of rescue. In 2019, the word of the year in the Oxford Dictionary became the term climate emergency. Ecolinguistic schools are popping up, such as the one founded by Arran Stibbe, who teaches about the necessary shift in language resources. So how do we begin to talk about what lies ahead in relation to the climate crisis? Which ecolinguistic resources to use? Since when can we talk about ecolinguistics? Why is ecolinguistics an important element of discourse, especially in the Czech-Polish linguistic field? This article focuses on ecolinguistics in the Czech-Polish environment, on its terminological definition, as well as on the genesis of the discipline in Polish and Czech linguistics and Czech linguistics. The research material consists of the texts of banners striking against the climate crisis in Poland and the Czech Republic. The article attempts to reconstruct the linguistic image of democracy in Polish language in accordance with the methodological assumptions of the "Lublin school of cognitive ethnolinguistics". The material for analysis has been excerpted from three types of sources: dictionaries, surveys and texts. First, a set of fundamental defining features ("basic features") of the concept of democracy has been established, which focused on four aspects: political, social, ethical and economic. Second, using the operation of profiling, the author of the article outlined which sets of features are ascribed to democracy in various types of Polish public discourse. This paper is an attempt to reconstruct the picture of a groundbreaking historical event captured in oral accounts from Warmia. To this end, terms from the field of ethnolinguistics, in particular linguistic worldview and point of view, have been applied. The analysis of the texts has revealed a clear opposition marked by lexemes polski (Polish) and niemiecki (German) and their derivatives as well as positive evaluation of what is local (Warmian). At the lexical level, borrowings from German (welować 'to elect'), dialectal lexis (poszczwać 'to bait') and a significant share of collocations referring to the situation of elections (odprawiać wiece) can be distinguished. What plays an important role in the picture of the plebiscite is the language exponents of negative phenomena and emotions, e.g. acts of violence, feeling of fear. The aim of this article is to analyze and compare Polish and Russian speech acts of request observed in messages sent on postcards. The presented analysis is a continuation of research into pragmatic as well as cultural aspects of postcard texts. The considerations presented in the article lead us to conclude that both similarities and differences can be found in Polish and Russian speech acts of request. For instance, one can observe discrepancies in their location within the structure of postcard messages. As far as similarities are concerned, the analysis shows among others that the basic form of speech acts of request in the messages written in both languages are sentences with imperative verb forms. The practice of expressing requests directly and explicitly might be caused by the small size of the postcard, but it can also be the result of symmetrical relationships between interaction partners. The paper is a pilot publication of a project on language contacts in a poorly studied area of the Baltic-Slavic border. The author presents the specifics of the egodocuments of Vandalin Shukevich (1852-1919), an autodidact scientist from the Nacha of the Lida district. The egodocuments were identified in the national historical archive of the Republic of Lithuania in 2021. The author presents their research potential in the study of linguistic contacts in the peripheral dialectal area of the Balto-Slavic border. She proves that the analysis of the dialectal material extracted from the manuscripts will introduce new knowledge about historical multilingualism, the Balto-Slavic language contacts, the development of local dialects, the state of the north-eastern Polish language at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, and about the history of the Polish science. The results of the analysis will also be relevant for the present, introducing novel data on geolects and the dynamics of the development of cross-border language contacts in the poorly studied area of the Balto-Slavic borderland. The article is concerned with the two-volume publication Językoznawstwo Bronisława Malinowskiego [Bronisław Malinowski’s Linguistics], edited by Krystyna Pisarek. Its first volume contains the editor’s thorough analysis of the linguistic achievements of this Polish-born British anthropologist, while the second volume includes translations of Malinowski’s works and a dictionary of the Kiriwina language. The linguistic importance of Malinowski’s works had been underestimated: his articles “Classificatory Particles in the Language of Kiriwina” (1920) and “The Problem of Meaning in Primitive Languages” (1923) were not included in the thirteen-volume collection of his writings (Dzieła [Works]). Pisarkowa, in turn, does recognize Malinowski’s contribution to linguistics and considers the following to be his unique achievements: (1) the discovery of the phatic function of speech (adopted by Roman Jakobson in his classification of language functions); (2) an explicit formulation of the principle of contextualism and the pragmatic aspect of word meaning; and (3) a precise description of the Kiriwina system of classificatory particles. The paper contrasts Jan Baudouin de Courtenay's approach to language with Neogrammarian views on the one hand, and Ferdinand de Saussure's approach on the other. Similarly to the Swiss linguist, de Courtenay understood language as a system, but his views on the langue-parole and synchrony- diachrony relationships were more complex. He can also be considered a precursor of sociolinguistics, psycholinguistics, ethnolinguistics, and even gender linguistics. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The aim of the article is to analyse the elements of folk poetics in the novel Pleasant things. Utopia by T. Bołdak-Janowska. The category of folklore is understood in a rather narrow way, and at the same time it is most often used in critical and literary works as meaning a set of cultural features (customs and rituals, beliefs and rituals, symbols, beliefs and stereotypes) whose carrier is the rural folk. The analysis covers such elements of the work as place, plot, heroes, folk system of values, folk rituals, customs, and symbols. The description is conducted based on the analysis of source material as well as selected works in the field of literary text analysis and ethnolinguistics. The analysis shows that folk poetics was creatively associated with the elements of fairy tales and fantasy in the studied work, and its role consists of – on the one hand – presenting Bołdak the folk world represented and – on the other – presenting a message about the meaning of human existence. The paper summarizes the first stage of development of a new subfield of linguistics known as linguistic memory research, and poses three questions which are important for its further development: what are the mutual relations and tangents between language and memory (both individual and collective), what are the mutual relations between linguistic memory research and the related field of cognitive ethnolinguistics (as well as such disciplines in humanities as historiography and theoretical archaeology), and lastly, in what areas can linguistic memory research and ethnolinguistics support each other most effectively. A greater part of the paper is devoted to a brief overview of the ten problem areas in memory research, and a presentation of specific tasks posed before linguists by questions concentrated in those areas: from the determination of the role of memory in the processes of lexicalization and phraseologization, through the classification of verbal (phonic, lexical, phraseological, syntactic, genre-related, etc.) exponents of memory, and the determination of their role in the learning of aspects of individual and collective memory, up to an analysis of the role of the given ethnic language in the building of large mental constructs interepreting the reality, such as collective memory, linguistic image of the world, and community knowledge. The purpose of this article is to present the latest dialectological research conducted in Lithuania based on the achievements of dialectology as a science. Primary attention will be devoted to the presentation of the latest research project, carried out in 2011-2014, and headed by prof. Danguole Mikuleniene at the Institut of the Lithuanian Language. The project involved 33 dialectologists, including specialists in Slavic dialects. This project is a continuation of earlier studies conducted in Lithuania by well-known Lithuanian dialectologists. The project takes advantage of their accomplishments and achievements, but at the same time it considers new aspects of the research and applies contemporary methodologies; thus, it gives rise to a new stage of the dialectological research in Lithuania. Lithuanian dialects are described in the context of the complicated language situation in many dialectal regions of Lithuania. What is more, the research project takes into account the effects of other language codes on dialects of Lithuanian in terms of synchronic and diachronic dimensions, and aims at description of the consequences of such interactions. This project is based not only in traditional dialectology, but also on methodologies developed by other branches of linguistics, such as sociolinguistics, ethnolinguistics and geolinguistics. The article discusses the issues of the co-existence of languages in the former Grand Duchy of Lithuania and the consequences of the phenomenon as documented in the works of Jan Karłowicz - the outstanding scholar of the second half of the nineteenth century, an expert and researcher of the "Lithuanian" version of Polish language. The article emphasizes the fact that the research on languages in the area of The Grand Duchy of Lithuania and results of their co-existence goes back to the second half of the nineteenth century and Jan Karłowicz was the pioneer of this research. He was the first to observe the following phenomena of their co-existence: interference; bilingualism and multilingualism; prioritization of co-existing languages with the unique role of the Polish language in focusing various functions in the history of The Grand Duchy of Lithuania; the diversity of Polish with sociolinguistic classification of its provincialisms and their division in the view of their origin; and the dangers to the Polish language in the period of Russification. Karłowicz struggled with the lack of terminology to describe the linguistic phenomena characteristic for the area. The article focuses on the classification of provincial qualities of the "Lithuanian" Polish language executed by Karłowicz in the social and ethnolinguistic area; and on the presentation of the phenomenon of linguistic interference visible in the provincial vocabulary in The Grand Duchy of Lithuania collected in "Dictionary of Polish dialects" by Karłowicz [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The author assumes that etymological analyses are "ethnolinguistically relevant" because by reconstructing the motivation of names, etymology allows one to reach the methods of linguistic conceptualization of phenomena and objects. He discusses the words świat 'world', kwiat 'flower', and gwiazda 'star' (endorsing Brückner's and Sławski's thesis that they all belong to a single etymological nest), and adduces examples of proverbs, riddles, and folk songs where the semantics of 'world', 'flower', and 'star' are joined, to demonstrate the benefits of directing etymological analyses to historically documented texts. The paper attempts to synthesize and revise the views on wishing and congratulating as specific speech acts which are represented in Polish by the performative verbs życzę, życzymy 'I/we wish', winszuję, winszujemy 'I/we congratulate', by optative formulas based on aspect operators (niech, oby, aby, żeby 'let', 'so that' &c.), and sometimes also by imperative sentences. It examines the conditions of fortuitousness of the wishes and their illocutive value, and especially the quite questionable honorific function of wishing formulas, and their connection with the linguistic relics of primitive magical thinking. The article presents one of the methods of developing the KABA indexing language - developing terminological subentries - used in the years 1992-2003. The rules of that were formulated, and stages of developing these subentries characterised, with particular attention put on the significance of an equivalence relation.
