The Polish Polar Station in Hornsund is a scientific base of great importance. In 2020, students of Gdynia Maritime University were able to visit the station and prepare photographic documentation of its surroundings. This article includes historical basics compared with the latest research concerning the flora, fauna, meteorology and studies on the Hansbreen glacier, research programme conducted on the station and climate changes in the Spitsbergen and perspective for the future fate of the Svalbard Archipelago.

Progress in audiological and imaging techniques has improved the diagnosis of cerebello-pontine tumours (CPAT) and enabled the discovery of tumour at the stage when relatively good useful level of hearing is preserved. Thus the surgeon, in addition to radical removal of tumour must pay particular attention and use "conservation-friendly" operative techniques that enable minimizing both the hazard and the degree of intraoperative damage to the hearing organ. The authors describe various audiological classification methods for evaluation of hearing ability in CPAT patients and preoperative criteria for hearing preservation. Principles of deciding about the choice of operative access to CPAT are reported. Particular attention is paid to intraoperative monitoring of hearing and prognostic factors including the size of tumour that well correspond to postoperative hearing preservation results. Preoperative analysis of those factors makes it possible to minimize the adverse effects and preserve useful post-operative hearing ability, thereby enabling the patient to resume his/her regular family, social, and professional life activities.
