Introduction: Esophageal electric impedance combined with pH-metry (MII-pH) is becoming the standard in the diagnosis of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). The ability to detect reflux episodes and analyze their chemical and physical proprieties renders this test valuable. Aim of the study: Assessment of the diagnostic value of multichannel intraluminal impedance with pH-metry in the diagnosis of gastroesophageal reflux disease, as compared to pH-metry, assessment of the correlations between symptoms reported and recorded episodes of pathological reflux episodes, based on our own studies. Materials and methods: The study group comprised 90 children aged 3 months to 17 years (average age 11.85) suspected of gastroesophageal reflux disease. We performed examination using multichannel intraluminal impedance probe with pH-metry option appropriate for the child's age. Sandhill Scientific software was used for data analysis with subsequent independent analysis of impedance and pH-metry and both together. Results: Basing on our examination, we have diagnosed pathological gastroesophageal reflux in 48 patients. Acid reflux was found in 31 patients. 15 patients had prolonged acid time in pH-metry, while impedance recording was normal. Nonacid reflux was found in 5 children and 12 patients have been diagnosed with mixed reflux. Conclusions: Esophageal electric impedance combined with pH-metry comprises a valuable tool for the diagnosis of pathological gastroesophageal reflux. MII-pH enables us to analyze not only chemical, but also physical proprieties of the refluxate and it is superior to pH-metry alone. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
