In recent years an increasing tendency in Candida yeast isolation from pets and domestic animals have been noted. This study was planned as an review, showing the most frequent cases of candidosis in domestic, breeding and companion animals. Candida albicans still remains the main pathogen causing different infections in mentioned animals. Also, C. guilliermondii, C. krusei, C. tropicalis and C. parapsilosis are frequently isolated from animals specimens. Pathological symptoms, their intensity and localization in Candida infections does not significantly differ either in animal or in human candidosis. Usually yeast infections occurs easier in very young and/or immunocompromised hosts. In such cases Candida species may become the etiological agent of serious invasive mycoses. Most frequently Candida yeasts are isolated from urinary system or alimentary tract disorders. Also, a number of clinical cases of local skin disorders, reproductory organs candidosis or fungal mastitis caused by different Candida species was described in literature. Relatively less common are infections of oral cavity, nose, ear canals or guttural pouches in mentioned animals. Presented review shows the important role of Candida yeasts as the clinically significant pathogen, frequently isolated from different animal disorders. Moreover Candida albicans and non-albicans species of Candida genus can cause serious, generalized infections sometimes lethal for the patient. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
