The 1434 Arnolfini Portrait by Jan Van Eyck is a model example of reinterpretations made by scholars both under the influence of archival discoveries, which shed a new light on the scene painted by Van Eyck, as well as contemporary methodological strategies, which call into question the hitherto established interpretation. At times, this practice brings more serious consequences, which question the established model of art which the work of art in question is supposed to represent. The article engages with the most important interpretative strategies — from the classical conception of Erwin Panofsky to Lorne Campbell’s ideas — while discussing yet another aspect of reinterpreta-tion, which allows artists to create their own works of visual art. Van Eyck’s painting has become such a pretext for creating new narratives across a variety of media, such as installation (Lynn Hershman), painting (David Hockney), and conceptual works. The author of the article points to the reflexivity of those transformations — through creative reinterpretation, we give historical pieces of art meanings they have never possessed before.

Celem artykułu jest analiza i interpretacja autorskiej wersji Iliady Homera napisanej w 2004 roku przez współczesnego włoskiego pisarza Alessandro Baricco. Oparł się on na tłumaczeniu Iliady autorstwa Marii Grazii Ciani. Reinterpretacja starożytnego poematu Homerowego stanowi, jak się wydaje, interesujący przykład próby uwspółcześnienia starożytnego dzieła literackiego. W artykule autorka analizuje oraz interpretuje treść i konstrukcję współczesnej wersji poematu, porównując ją z jej pierwowzorem oraz tłumaczeniem na język włoski Iliady, na którym bazował Baricco. The aim of the article is to analyze and interpret the new version of the Iliad written in 2004 by the contemporary Italian writer Alessandro Baricco. He based his version of the text on the Italian translation of Iliad by Maria Grazia Ciani. The reinterpretation and reconstruction of the ancient poem of Homer by Alessandro Baricco seems to be an interesting example of an attempt to modernize an ancient literary work. In the article, the author analyzes and interprets the content and the structure of the contemporary version of the poem, comparing it to the original text of the Iliad and its Italian translation on which Baricco was basing.

Podczas gdy niektórzy kognitywiści podważają charakter moralny ludzkiego postępowania oraz wskazują na jego deterministyczną zależność od czynników pracy mózgu, trzeba nam na nowo pytać się o etyczność procesu poznawczego. Czy takie pytanie w ogóle jest uprawnione? Często w naukach kognitywnych nie ma już miejsca na etykę i zagadnienia natury moralnej. Św. Tomasz z Akwinu widział człowieka jednak zawsze całościowo: duszę i ciało, jego wiarę i rozum, cnoty intelektualne w łączności z cnotami moralnymi i teologalnymi. Artykuł, wprowadzając kwestię dotyczącą możliwości etycznej odpowiedzialności za głupotę, pragnie wskazać na niektóre zagadnienia etyczne w kontekście budowania procesu poznawczego. Głupota nie jest zatem tylko brakiem inteligencji lub niedorozwoju umysłowego, ale raczej wiąże się z brakiem wewnętrznej spójności władz duszy oraz integracji czynników formujących poszczególne etapy wiedzy. While the braver cognitivists try to subject the nature of morality and its formalisation within the frames of ethical theories to reinterpretation, we need to think whether cognitive science is able to make such changes. Surely, ethics shaped upon an appropriate vision of human nature should also take into consideration information about the knowledge of reality and truth. Saint Thomas Aquinas is considered one of those significant theorists and practitioners of morality who analysed in depth the principles of how judgements about wisdom and morality are formed. Are the teachings of Thomas Aquinas today merely an unnecessary “spirit of the past”? They are not and his analysis of the principles of cognition even nowadays can inspire further studies on human choices and subjective ethical actions. The reason is entitled to wisdom, not folly, and the soul is entitled to perfection, not numbness.

Giselle to jeden z najsłynniejszych baletów romantycznych, którego premiera odbyła się w 1841 roku w Paryżu. Jego popularność nie słabnie do dnia dzisiejszego, choć obecnie funkcjonuje on zarówno w wersji klasycznej (choreografia Jeana Corallego i Jules’a Perraulta), jak i w wariantach współczesnych (choreografie między innymi Matsa Eka, Borysa Ejfmana), przedstawiając różnorodne taneczne obrazy szaleństwa. Balet ten inspiruje jednak nie tylko samych choreografów - postać Giselle równie silnie oddziałuje także na same tancerki-wykonawczynie, dla których do dziś rola ta jest wielkim marzeniem i ogromnym wyzwaniem. Jedną z najsłynniejszych odtwórczyń tej partii była rosyjska balerina Olga Spiesiwcewa, która tak bardzo wniknęła w psychologię swojej bohaterki, że sama ostatnie lata swego życia spędziła w zakładzie dla psychicznie chorych. Jej losy zainspirowały rosyjskiego choreografa Borysa Ejfmana do stworzenia baletu Czerwona Giselle, w którym wyraża on swoje fascynacje nie tylko biografią Spiesiwcewej, lecz również samym procesem rozwoju choroby psychicznej. Celem niniejszego tekstu jest ukazanie na podstawie analizy wybranych choreografii baletu Giselle Adolphe’a Adama, w jaki sposób taniec ukazuje problematykę szaleństwa, a także omówienie rozmaitych kontekstów kulturowych, społecznych, obyczajowych itp., przez pryzmat których współcześni artyści interpretują to zagadnienie. The libretto of Giselle served choreographers and dancers as the starting point in showcasing their ideas and images of dance madness successfully for generations. One of its most famous performers was the dancer Olga Spessivtseva. She got so worked up with the psychology of her character that she ended up spending her last years of her life in a psychiatric clinic. This terrible tragedy inspired the choreographer Boris Eifman to create a ballet called Red Giselle. He focussed his ideas not only on Spessivtsea’s madness, but on mental illness in general. So, this once great romantic ballet, created two centuries ago, has gone in a completely new and bold direction. Through the support of its choreographer’s ideas and the dancer’s abilities, Giselle is still regarded as an attractive staging production for companies today, and more so, it has now evolved into a story established on the categories of madness.

In the last two decades there has been a far-reaching reinterpretation of the factors and mechanisms of socio-economic development, described in the context of the territorial paradigm. The concepts of territorial capital and the territorialisation of development processes have been introduced, which firmly expose specific space resources and both the material and non-material determinants of economic development. The post-industrial heritage, which constitutes a specific characteristic of many Polish cities, is an element of that territorial capital. This heritage includes both material and non-material elements and is perceived as a key factor in territorial development. The aim of the article is to analyze industrial heritage in the context of the paradigm of territorial development. A case study investigation of former industrial sites in Łódź offers concreto examples for theoretical analysis. According to the authors, this capital offers a specific territorial potential in Łódź and still exerts a significant influence on its development. The paper is based on an interdisciplinary approach, which interweaves economic, social and technical threads. The applied research method is based on a critical analysis of the literature on the subject, combined with analyses of the case studies. W ostatnich dwóch dekadach nastąpiła reinterpretacja czynników i mechanizmów rozwoju społeczno-gospodarczego, opisana w ramach terytorialnego paradygmatu. Wprowadzono pojęcie kapitału terytorialnego i terytorializacji procesów rozwoju mocno eksponujące zasoby specyficzne miejsca i niematerialne uwarunkowania rozwoju gospodarczego. Elementem kapitału terytorialnego jest dziedzictwo poprzemysłowe tworzące specyficzność wielu miast. Dziedzictwo to, obejmujące materialne i niematerialne elementy, jest postrzegane jako kluczowy czynnik rozwoju terytorialnego. Celem artykułu jest analiza dziedzictwa poprzemysłowego w kontekście paradygmatu rozwoju terytorialnego. Ilustracją dla rozważań teoretycznych jest analiza typu case study potencjału poprzemysłowego Łodzi. Zdaniem autorów kapitał ten tworzy w Łodzi specyficzny potencjał terytorialny i wywiera wciąż istotny wpływ na jego rozwój. W pracy zaprezentowano interdyscyplinarne podejście łączące wątki gospodarcze, społeczne i techniczne. Zastosowana metoda badawcza to krytyczna analiza literatury przedmiotu połączona z analizą case study.

Głównym celem niniejszego tekstu jest przedstawienie sposobów reinterpretacji motywu konia trojańskiego we współczesnej reklamie i wpływu tego procesu na odbiorców. Przykłady poddane analizie zostały zaczerpnięte przede wszystkim z zagranicznych reklam prasowych oraz outdoorowych i dotyczą kilku obszarów: produktów spożywczych, środków higienicznych ,motoryzacji, usług oraz promocji czytelnictwa. Artykuł stanowi także próbę odpowiedzi na pytanie, które aspekty funkcjonowania wojny trojańskiej w masowej wyobraźni są najczęściej wykorzystywane przez reklamotwórców: wygląd drewnianej konstrukcji, wnętrze machiny, moment wjazdu konia dostrzeżonego miasta, inne? Analizie treści poszczególnych reklam, nawiązujących do starożytnego motywu, towarzyszy równoległa analiza kompozycyjna (mise-en-scène). Podsumowaniem referatu jest kategoryzacja nowych znaczeń przypisywanych figurze konia trojańskiego np. przestrogi przed zagrożeniem, solidności wykonania przedmiotu lub usługi, a także skuteczności w dążeniu do wyznaczonego celu. The main purpose of this paper is presenting how Trojan horse motive might be reinterpreted in contemporary advertising. The analyzed examples are primarily derived from foreign newspaper advertisement and related to some areas: food industry, hygiene, motorization, services and the promotion of reading. The paper also might give an answer to question which aspects of the Trojan War are commonly used by advert designers: appearance of a wooden structure, the inside of war machine, moment when horse gained entry to the safeguarded city and others. Analysis of adverts will be connected with analysis of advertising layouts (mise-en-scène). The summary will be containing the types of new meanings of Trojan horse: warning of danger, reliability and efficiency. Formists were the first avant-garde movement in Polish art that integrated the creators coming from various artistic milieus: Krakow, Warsaw and Lvov. The members of the group on principle rejected Naturalism and Impressionism and took their inspiration from Expressionism, Cubism, and Futurism. Nevertheless, apart from the works that presented purposeful deformation of form, color and space, the painters created works drawing from both classical and folk art. This current was particularly visible in the paintings by Tymon Niesiołowski, Jacek Mierzejewski, Eugeniusz Zak and Roman Kramsztyk, the oeuvres of whom inscribed in the realm of New Classicism. This turn towards classical patterns, frequently connected with the interest in the antiquity, did not mean the return to academic patterns, but expressed the rediscovery and reinterpretation of those patterns. The fascination with universal values, frequently referring to the art of the past ages, was reflected in the works by the artists forming the moderate wing of the group and became visible in the works by Leon Chwisek, Zbigniew Pronaszko and Jan Hrynkowski, who represented the avant-garde branch of Formists. Folk art became another important source of inspiration; among artists who particularly frequently referred to it were Tytus Czyżewski, Konrad Winkler and Władysław Roguski.
