The aim of these studies was to determine the effect of soil contamination with nickel (0, 75, 150 and 225 mg Ni kg-1 soil) on the content of nickel in biomass of cocksfoot and fractions of this metal in the soil under different liming (0 Ca and Ca by 1 hydrolytic acidity) and fertilization with organic materials (without the use of organic materials, straw rye and brown coal from Turow Coal Mine). Four swaths of cocksfoot gathered in the third year of a pot experiment were analyzed and fractions of nickel in the soil after the last swath of test plants were determined. Total nickel content in the plant and in the soil was determined by ICP-AES after earlier mineralization. Fractions of nickel in the soil were determined by sequential fractionation according to BCR procedure. The introduction of nickel into the soil, regardless of amount, significantly increased concentration of this metal in the biomass of cocksfoot and soil in all fractions, in particular the soluble and easily exchangeable fraction (F1). Liming the soil and the application of organic materials decreased nickel content in the biomass of cocksfoot and its soluble fraction in soil, easy available for plants, causing the same time to increase its share in the residual fraction (liming) and oxidisable fraction (the application of organic materials).

The aim of the study was to analyse daily food rations of patients with chronic renal failure (CRF) receiving a supplement containing essential amino acid ketoanalogues (EAAK). The study was carried out on 60 patients with CRF of different etiology. During the progression of CRF, decline of consumption of products being the source of protein and limitation of consumption of products high in energy were observed. This can lead to protein-energy malnutrition. The results of the research emphasize the necessity of providing patients with CRF constant dietician care that would assure possibility to adjust diet to individual needs of every patient as well as to modify it, if necessary, and that would have significant influence on prolongation of the phase of predialysis treatment as well as on better preparation to dialysis.

This is the introduction of chronic cystitis in course of urinary bladder calculi, 12 years after vesicoureteral reflux operation. The nucleus of the calculus (3 x 3 x 4 cm) were unresorbed dexon sutures left after the surgical treatment. Inaccuracy of radiological and ultrasonography examination delayed the settlement of the diagnosis about 18 months, and patient was caused of many months antibacterial therapy. After removal the calculus from the urinary bladder, dysuric disorders abated quickly and than after 8 weeks antibacterial therapy pathological changes in urine analysis disappeared, urine culture was sterile.

Digoxin-like immunoreactivity (DLS) and erythrocyte sodium-potassium pump (PSP) activity were measured in a group of 16 patients with chronic renal failure (CRF) before and just after haemodialysis and in a group of 9 healthy persons. Before haemodialysis DLS was present in the blood of most CRF patients, at the mean concentration of 0,14 +/- 0,13 micrograms/l. After haemodialysis DLS concentration decreased to 0,09 +/- 0,09 microgram/l (p less than 0,01). In the control group blood DLS concentration was nondetectable. In the CRF group PSP activity was higher before than after haemodialysis (p less than 0,01; 12,1 +/- 1,8 and 7,6 +/- 1,4 muMol Pi/h/g Hb. PSP activity in the control groups was 10,3 +/- 1,9 muMol Pi/h/g Hb). In the CRF group PSP activity was higher before haemodialysis (p less than 0,05) and lower after haemodialysis (p less than 0.01) than in the control group. Our results confirmed the presence of DLS in the blood of the majority of CRF patients. DLS concentration decreased after haemodialysis but we did not found any parallel increase in PSP activity in these patients. These results did not confirm the hypothesis that DLS might inhibit PSP activity in red blood cells from CRF patients.

In 8 non-dialysed patients with chronic renal failure (PNN) and hypertension (NT)-(PNNT group) sodium-potassium pump activity (PSP) and intra-erythrocyte sodium (NaE) and potassium (KE) concentration were measured. No differences were found in PSP, NaE and KE between group PNNT and healthy volunteers (Z). These results do not support an importance of the role of the so-called endogenous PSP inhibitor in the pathogenesis of NT in patients with PNN.

Two subgroups of patients were selected out of those dialysed for chronic renal failure. Group A included patients without arterial hypertension before dialysis, and group B patients with arterial hypertension before dialysis. Blood endogenous digoxin-like substance (DLS) has been assayed. Its blood levels were not increased in hypertensive patients either before or after dialysis. No correlation was found between DLS and mean arterial pressure in the whole group of patients with chronic renal failure. The obtained results do not suggest that arterial blood pressure in patients with chronic renal failure is related to the presence of DLS in the blood.
