This paper examines and compares, in the light of French Discourse Analysis, four life stories - collected through interviews - that were produced by Brazilian migrants that live illegally in France or in England. The main objective is to find out the discursive representations (of themselves, of the others, of the world) constructed by such individuals in their narratives and, at the same time, verify if and how their irregular situation interferes with their routine in the new country. In order to analyze and compare the four stories, some categories that integrate Maingueneau's Global Semantics (2005) were used: themes, vocabulary, enunciative deixis and enunciation mode. If the results reveal differences in the way of telling and evaluating the migratory experience, they also allow us to apprehend similarities, such as the primarily economic motivation to migrate, the difficulties (cultural, linguistic etc.) faced especially when arriving in the destination country and the precarious working conditions to which Brazilian migrants are submitted due to being in an irregular situation. Even though two of the interviewed subjetcts have preferred to be silent on this issue, their opinions can be implicitly identified. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

War broke out in Europe when Europeans were convinced of their lasting peace, based more on ideas than reality. Pacifism, the dream of Europeans in the 60s and 70s, was replaced by the violence of conflict. Analysts, historians, militaries, sociologists and other commentators on war have found it difficult to deal with the novelty of a nationalist war of defense in a global world. The global turn in political theory has been put to the test. In its analytical capacity, in the normative projection of the desired world in the face of the strategic and political reality of resources, multilateralism and the emergence of new global actors. The Wider West or the Global South are examples of emerging concepts whose substantive meaning has yet to be clarified. This issue of Political Observer aims to contribute to the debate, and provide a historical record of the emergence of the present of the war, sometimes contextualizing the past in order to clarify some of the vectors of the analyses that will follow in a future perceived as uncertain, for which this opening paper provides a first viewpoint sustained by some further readings mentioned at the end, which are essential to understanding the conflict.

This paper aims to demonstrate the efficacy of a five-level homelessness prevention typology, encompassing universal, targeted, crisis, emergency, and recovery categories. We argue that this typology can be deployed to illuminate key comparisons in homelessness prevention policy and practice between different jurisdictions and over time. Meanwhile, it avoids the confusions and overlaps that occur in extant categorisations. Using the UK jurisdictions as an empirical testbed for this analytical framework, four key lessons emerge which we contend have resonance across much of the global north. First, though there is growing evidence of the importance of both universal prevention measures (particularly the delivery of affordable housing and poverty reduction), and targeted preventative interventions (focused on high risk groups and transitions), practical action on both fronts has been deeply deficient to date. Second, and more encouragingly, there is a nascent shift in homelessness practice from an overwhelming focus on basic, emergency interventions, towards more upstream attempts to avert the kind of crisis situations that can lead to homelessness arising in the first place. Third, and also welcome, is a trend within recovery interventions from treatment-led to more housing-led models, albeit that this shift has been frustratingly slow to materialise in many countries. Fourth, across all of these categories of homelessness prevention, there remain substantial evidence gaps, especially outside of the US.

The article aims to do specific and relevant observations regarding the collective redress in Europe. This is a polemic and enigmatic subject, which has been receiving increasing attention from European political agents. It is also be analyzed the possibility of using collective redress instruments to regulate situations of mass damage, as well as the responses given by Europe to this demand. Finally, it is imperative to emphasize that the present paper does not have the pretension to state if there is some superior model of protection and compensation. The article only intends to critically describe the current scenario, in an attempt to optimize all options for better protection of the collective damages.

Is there such a thing as Euronoir? And if so, what would be its concept? Basing itself on a loosely defined corpus of Eastern European crime fiction from the past three decades — of which only a few are accessible to a French-speaking audience, in translation — this paper intends to question the notion of Euronoir. Where can one draw the Eastern border of European crime fiction? And what are the defining characteristics of Eastern European noir?
