This paper analyzes the game Elsinore, developed by the group Golden Glitch in 2019, as an example of a postcolonial adaptation of Shakespeare's literary classic Hamlet. Through the work of Hutcheon (2013) and Stam (2008), the paper argues that adapting goes beyond a supposed fidelity to the adapted text and can also be a political expression that highlights the perspectives of marginalized characters. In the game, the protagonist, Ophelia, is a young mixed-race noblewoman trapped in a time loop that the player must unravel. The analysis of Elsinore contributes to discussing issues of racialization and social belonging from the perspective of coloniality studies. In addition, it also helps to integrate these debates in the gaming context, thus contributing to adaptation studies. Finally, it concludes that Elsinore is a work that has aesthetic and political value. However, it still lacks deeper discussions about its value as a decolonial production.

This paper tries to summarize the results of studies from different areas of knowledge supporting the idea that temperamental traits, such as “reckless/hyper-exploratory” attitudes, commonly believed to be associated with psychopathology, surprisingly turn out as adaptive under specific stress conditions. In particular, this paper analyzes an ethologic line of research on primates suggesting models for a sociobiological interpretation of mood disorders in humans; a study that found high frequencies of a genetic variance associated with bipolar disorder in people without bipolar disorder but with hyperactivity/novelty-seeking traits; the outcomes of socio-anthropological-historical surveys on the evolution of mood disorders in Western countries in the last centuries; surveys on changing societies in Africa and African migrants in Sardinia; and studies that found higher frequencies of mania and subthreshold mania among Sardinian immigrants in Latin American megacities. Although it is not unequivocally accepted that the prevalence of mood disorders has increased, it would be logical to suppose that a nonadaptive condition should have disappeared over time; mood disorders, on the contrary, persist and their prevalence might have even increased. This new interpretation could lead to counter discrimination and stigma towards people suffering from the disorder and would be a central point in psychosocial treatments in addition to pharmacological therapy. Our aim is to hypothesize that bipolar disorder, strongly characterized by these traits, may be the result of the interaction between genetic characteristics, not necessarily pathological, and specific environmental conditions rather than a mere product of an aberrant genetic profile. If mood disorders were mere nonadaptive conditions, they would have disappeared over time; however, their prevalence paradoxically persists if not even increases over time. The hypothesis that bipolar disorder may result from the interaction between genetic characteristics, not necessarily pathological, and specific environmental factors seems more credible than considering bipolar disorder as a mere product of an aberrant genetic profile.

- Author

ROWLAND, CLARA
- Abstract
In the closing sequence of Manoel de Oliveira's Amor de perdição (1978), Teresa's last letter to Simão Botelho reveals the phantasmagoric nature of the cinematographic image: in the posthumous temporality of its reading, Teresa enters the scene as an apparition, projected by writing and permitting the reunion, at last, of the lovers' bodies--separated throughout the film--in the same shot. Through a detailed reading of the depiction of letters in Oliveira's adaptation of Camilo Castelo Branco's novel, and of its connections to other works by the Portuguese filmmaker, this paper explores the interplay between writing, image, and authorship in what has been termed Oliveira's "epistolary cinema" and its relevance for a redefinition of the role of writing within his ideas regarding film. Climate change is a wicked problem, a framework not often used in sociolegal studies. The problem is complex, not readily named, and not limited to one jurisdiction. Therefore, the places of law are multiple: human rights instruments, supranational tribunals, regional courts, and local governments and NGOS. Litigation concerning responsibility for greenhouse gas emissions has largely not resulted in favorable judgments, and the papers in this collection turn to other ways of conceptualizing law and courts in responding to climate change. Relevant legal strategies include environmental legal enforcement, but also changes in investment, and response to the many disasters that are related to climate change. The papers in this collection travel across jurisdictions, actors and problems to assess legal strategies concerning climate change. Under the turbulent environment of the 21st century, climate change emerges as a menacing and urgent crisis, especially in urban poverty-stricken areas, where its impacts are most acutely felt. Despite the importance of understanding public perceptions to foster effective climate change resilience, there still exists a notable gap in nuanced scholarship within the informal settlements of South Africa. This study employs a mixed-method approach to explore how cognitive, emotional, motivational and cultural factors affect these communities' resilience or vulnerability to climate-related hazards. The prevailing consensus in the literature suggests a general underestimation of climate change risks among residents. However, this paper contends that innovative, resource-constrained strategies observed in these communities suggest a significant degree of agency and preparedness to confront these challenges. This study sheds light on the interplay between individual actions, social networks, information channels, cultural practices, and power dynamics in shaping climate change perceptions. It recommends integrating local, cost-effective adaptation measures into wider policy frameworks. In conclusion, the study emphasises the importance of educating informal settlement residents, harnessing community participation and utilising local adaptation knowledge and sustainable development techniques to forge a resilient and equitable future for the inhabitants of Buffalo City Municipality.

Purpose: Identifies a hierarchy of information and argues that professional knowledge has marginalized ‘local knowledge’. Methodology/Approach: In a review of recent research, the paper offers examples of how ‘wicked problems’ (from obesity to climate change) impose different burdens on different communities, which foregrounds the value of residents’ experiences. Findings: In an era of climate change, adaptive planning must incorporate ‘local knowledge’, which may return to older technologies and established practices. Research Implication: The paper argues that ‘local knowledge’ can be ‘powerful knowledge’, as discussed within educational research, which has important implications for school and college curricula. Originality/Value of paper: Amateur experts, citizen observatories and crowd sourced data can all play significant roles within communities facing new forms of risk and hazard.

Abstract In this paper, we analyze secondary data from surveys focusing on climate change and adaptation in Sao Paulo municipalities. The survey was completed by municipal actors who work in 332 of the 645 municipalities in the State. In this paper, we use a theoretical framework on urban climate governance, which highlights the role that local governments play in proposing strategies to deal with climate change, to present and discuss data related to: 1) the occurrence of extreme climatic events in these municipalities; 2) the impacts of these events; 3) local government actors’ perception about climate change; and 4) local actions and responses. Our analysis of these data significantly contributes to better understanding how cities in the most populous and economically developed state in Brazil perceive, respond and deal with climate change and what critical challenges hamper climate adaptation in these cities.

The paper focuses on Lamy’s reflections on literary fiction and theatre as displayed in his Nouvelles réflexions sur l’art poétique (1678). Bernard Lamy (1640–1715) was a prolific writer, a major Augustinian thinker and a member of the French Oratory. Today, he is mostly known for his La rhétorique ou l’Art de parler (1st edition dates back to 1675), and his numerous works continue to elicit contributions from specialists on rhetoric and literary fiction. Lamy’s reflections on literature, theatre and aesthetics are based on rigorous moral and religious grounds, hence his overriding aim to dismantle and deconstruct the core of what some continue to call the “classical doctrine”. Lamy systematically treats topics such as embellishment, respect for the unities (time, place, action), paradoxes of aesthetical pleasure, verisimilitude, morality of literary and theatrical fiction, etc., all to demonstrate their radical incompatibility with the principles and values of an exemplary pious person. Lamy’s rigorist moral and religious views might well seem shocking to a modern reader, but we aim to show that his analysis of various creative strategies (especially intricacies of rhetorical adaptation and procedures of arousing an emotional/intellectual response) has a great potential to enrich our understanding of early modern fiction and theatre.

The paper focuses on the ability of Czech speakers to explicitly imitate native English realizations of the phoneme /t/ as [ʔ] (t-glottaling). In Czech, glottalization occurs as a boundary signal of wordinitial vocalic onsets. We hypothesize that this allows for a better imitative performance in the intervocalic context as compared to non-prevocalic contexts. However, an alternative hypothesis based on language-external facts (frequency in the learners’ English input) predicts the opposite pattern. Our experiment involves 30 participants in a shadowing task. In addition to words with /t/, words with /k/ are examined to establish if speakers can generalize to a phonologically similar category to which they have not been exposed. Speakers adapted their pronunciation after exposure to t-glottaling to some degree. Our hypothesis was confirmed for the shadowing task, while the alternative language-external hypothesis was confirmed for the post-test task, suggesting a different pattern of performance in terms of imitation versus learning.

This paper focuses on two film productions of the Shakespearean play Hamlet (1600-1601), both made in Brazil in the 1970s. It is my contention that A herança (“The Inheritance”), by Ozualdo Candeias (1970), and O jogo da vida e da morte (“The Game of Life and Death”), by Mario Kuperman (1971), constitute intertextual works which can be understood as transcultural, anthropophagic adaptations of the Shakespearean drama.

- Abstract
João Botelho is a Portuguese filmmaker whose filmography includes prominent filmic productions which celebrate an interpretive reunion with key authors of the Portuguese literature. Thus, it is not surprising that his latest cinematic creation is precisely a literary adaptation of the novel Os Maias by Eça de Queiroz. In this sense, this essay focuses on the analysis of the cinematic transmutation proposed by João Botelho (OS MAIAS, 2014) highlighting the canonical novel's contemporaneousness, its cinematographic qualities and the artificial and operatic-theatrical character of this literary adaptation. Te paper also emphasizes the encounter with the novel; its reinterpretation and appropriation in a gesture of respect for its author and for the novel and simultaneously underlines a purpose of artistic and authorial emancipation where the artificiality plays an important role. Internationalizing operations requires multinational corporations (MNCs) to develop strategies capable of simultaneously dealing with external institutional pressures towards legitimacy and internal institutional pressures towards conformity. In this conceptual paper we develop a set of theory-driven propositions on what are the internationalization strategies that MNCs must deploy given their institutional environments. Especially emphasizing the external institutional environment and differences in institutional development, we also approach the relevance of considering the internal institutional environment to the firm. Entry strategies tend to be based on low-involvement modes and on partnerships, such as joint-ventures, to enter institutionally immature or institutionally farther countries. Acquisitions and partnerships may be used when internal institutional pressures are weaker. We conclude with a broad discussion and avenues for future research. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper presents a dialogue between literature and cinema, bolstering up the methodological assumptions of Comparative Literature, to discuss the film adaptation of literary A senhorita Simpson,, by Sergio Sant'Anna for the film Bossa Nova, by Bruno Barreto. The analysis of the composition and themes of the film allows the recognition of their similarities and differences with the literary text, noting that the film, although it inspire the novel, is a personal creation of the filmmaker. India’s encounter with farmers’ protests since 2015 has highlighted the constructivist attempt of grassroots movements in confronting the state’s monopoly over production of law. Farmers’ groups and civil society organisations have been mobilising legal and extra-legal tactics to gain discrete legal responses from the state towards guaranteeing farmers’ fundamental rights in the context of climate change adaptation to droughts in semi-arid parts of rural India. This paper discusses the strategies used by such actors to frame the contours of climate justice. The movement highlights the need for India’s policies to align with transformational, procedural and distributional justice goals that recognise and redress structural (socio-economic, cultural, colonial) roots of vulnerability towards just and sustainable adaptation processes. It also highlights the responsibility of the nation-state to safeguard the fundamental/constitutional rights of farmers who contribute to the nation’s food security while being the most vulnerable to climate impacts at sub-national scales. This paper focuses on the management of scarce water resources in two metropolises of the arid West of the United States facing intensifying droughts and increased water stress. Located in the Sonoran Desert and built on the model of the oasis city, Phoenix and Tucson are great examples of the socio-ecological challenges linked to extreme water scarcity. This study considers these two cities as laboratories for urban adaptation to climate change and explores competing modalities of adaptation to water scarcity. Since the system of large hydraulic infrastructures underpinning urban growth is increasingly called into question, we observe and analyze the power relations between stakeholders involved in water resource management. Using an urban political ecology framework, this contribution shows that adaptation strategies are implemented by dominant actors in order to maintain the growth trajectory of particularly attractive cities. Yet, it also highlights the role that citizen empowerment plays in the emergence of potential environmental alternatives. The results show that environmental alternatives play an important role in regulating resource control strategies and in calling for socio-environmental transformations in the urban metabolism.

This paper is connected to the Project “Pedagogical interventions in literature teaching: relations among literary adaptations” carried out in the program Mestrado Profissional em Letras in the Federal University of Juiz de Fora. It aims to reflect about literature teaching in the final years of basic school in Brazilian public schools and also propose a pedagogical intervention to be applied in an environment of almost total lack of literary activities in this phase of our educational system. Through the study of canonical authors and adaptations to cartoons and television we seek to achieve the improvement of literary literacy and widening of repertoire of students in the ninth grade of a public school in the city of Juiz de Fora. It also tackles the specificities of the unreliable narrator in first and third persons. The works which were studied in this paper were Tell Tale Heart by Edgar Alan Poe, The Alienist by Machado de Assis and two adaptations of The nurse by Machado de Assis. Our theoritical support were the concepts of literary literacy (Cosson, 2016; Paulino e Cosson, 2009), literary canon and the right to literature (Calvino, 2007; Paulino, 2004; Cândido, 2004), polysystem theory (Even-Zohar, 2013), communities and circles of readers (Colomer, 2007; Cosson, 2017), text repertoire and widening of repertoire (Iser, 1996), adaptation (Hutcheon, 2013), short-story (Moisés, 1970) and reliable and unreliable narrator (Booth, 1983). The methodology used was research-action (Thiolent, 1983). The strategy we used while carrying out our intervention was supervised reading, which proved to be the most adequate for beginners. At the end of the process it was possible to notice a considerable advance in the process of literary literacy and widening of repertoire of the pupils involved concerning the identification of the type of narrator.

In this paper, I propose the concept of Cultural Anthropophagy (Andrade, 2011) - originally a practice of Brazilian indigenous tribes and later incorporated by the modernist literary thought - as a theoretical-procedural framework, a reading horizon, for the understanding of the dialogical relationship between different media, texts and cultures. Indeed, I intent to rethink the dialogue between different medias as a violent process of Transcultural devouring (Amorim, 2016) and, consequently, to propose the very idea of adaptation as a practice of Transconstruction. In order to do so, this paper will be underpinned by a theoretical framework that consists of dialogical and intertextual Theories of Adaptation and the Brazilian modernist concept of Cultural Anthropophagy.

The Lizzie Bennet Diaries (2012) adaptation offers commentary on Pride and Prejudice (1813) that enables the audience to make interpretations that would hardly be achieved by knowing only one of the works. In this paper, we address the dialogic relation between the novel and the adaptation (BRUHN, 2013; HUTCHEON, 2013). Knowing the novel enriches the interpretation of the adaptation, just as the adaptation comments on aspects of the novel. Under this perspective, the representation of the character Lydia Bennet in the adaptation is analyzed. Despite being secondary in previous adaptations and lacking depth in the novel, Lydia is a complex character in the web series. Transformations and additions explain aspects of the novel that could remain unnoticed by readers who do not understand the social, historical and cultural context of the early nineteenth century. Therefore, a dialogic reading of the adaptation could lead to a new perception of Lydia Bennet.

The sound systems of the world’s languages adapt to biomechanical, aerodynamic and cognitive pressures associated with sound production and discrimination. Such pressures help to yield the greater frequency of some sound types and the reduced frequency of others. In this paper I explore such adaptation, pointing out that sound systems not only adapt to such pressures in ways that are clear from a typological perspective, but that they adapt in more subtle ways that are only now becoming apparent. Furthermore, I survey a host of recent studies suggesting that sound systems likely adapt to some pressures that vary across populations and environments. While the extent of adaptation to such variable pressures is certainly debatable, the mere existence of phonetic/phonological adaptation to pressures that differ across populations is increasingly well supported. The evidence in support of such adaptation ranges from large-scale quantitative data, to biomechanical modeling, to the speech of Freddie Mercury.

ABSTRACT The field of the Human Dimensions of Climate Change there is a rich debate grounded in the theoretical frameworks of the Social Science on how responses to climate change are intrinsically related to local factors and determinants that shape adaptive processes in different systems. Other theoretical-analytical possibilities, also focused on adaptation, vulnerability and adaptive capacity, have sought to explore intersections with the literatures on resilience and sustainable development. In this paper, the authors provide a critical review of these theoretical perspectives, and propose a reflection on the Brazilian context and the adjustment processes needed to anticipate and respond to climate impact in the cities. Drawing on empirical studies in Brazil, the authors of this paper advocate the need for a set of critical variables (and an analysis of possible synergies and tradeoffs amongst them) in future studies focused on analyzing the Brazilian context.

Trouble awaits the scholar who decides to study movie adaptations of videogames – or, as they are more commonly called, ‘videogame adaptations’. Literary and post-literary biases, an unfriendly critical environment and the lack of systematic references are but a few of the many obstacles on her or his path. By addressing these issues and attempting to understand them against the historical and theoretical backdrop that informed them in the first place, this paper aims at a reevaluation, however partial, of these productions as symptoms of a self-reflexive tendency present in contemporary commercial cinema. In the process of nearing a new understanding of these cultural and industrial artifacts, a cross-examination of key concepts belonging to three fields of studies (game studies, film studies and adaptation studies) opens up the possibility of an interdisciplinary cooperation aimed at the adjustment and rectification of mutual assumptions and misconceptions.

In this paper we intend to analyze the last two versions of Jules Verne’s Frritt-Flacc published in Brazil. The first Brazilian translation of Verne’s story was published in 2012 by Pulo do Gato and it was illustrated by Alexandre Camanho, while the second version was released in 2016 as a free app-book and it was created by StoryMax with Novozymes and SESI-PR.Our research explores how the above-mentioned Frritt-Flacc versions attempt to catch the imagination of their target young audiences through a series of specific themes and formal feature. The main objective of our project is precisely to investigate how narrative devices and visual language expand and redefine the scope and meanings of the original French work under discussion, thus, helping readers and critics to have a deeper, more significant understanding of Verne’s rich fantasy story.

This paper aims to identify modalities of dialogue between the television series Capitu by Luis Fernando Carvalho and the novel Dom Casmurro by Machado de Assis. It is based on the theory of narratology, mainly on Gerard Genette's contributions. In order to consolidate the study on the nature of narratives, we propose that the texts be read based on the available scrutiny of the two pieces. Moreover, we intend to apprehend the meanings of image and time related to the television show, the process of adaptation, and the modern artistic movements that are found in the process of transmutation of the narrative from a support based on verbal code to a support based on audio-visual-verbal code.

ABSTRACT The aim of this paper is to present the adaptation of the Life Satisfaction Scale in Specific Domains to be used in adults from Buenos Aires. In a first stage, work was done in the linguistic and conceptual equivalence. In the second stage, the local version of the scale was applied to a sample by 187 adults (women = 56.10 %) with an average age of 31.20 (SD = 10.70). We studied the ability of discrimination of items, the reliability, construct validity and content. The results showed that the scale has adequate content validity to be applied in adults of our environment, and presents clear evidence of construct validity and adequate precision for almost all the subscales. The results are discussed in view of the importance of generating new conceptual and instrumental developments relating to the concepts of positive psychology.
