- Abstract
The pulp and paper sector has a notable highlight in the Brazilian economy, contributing significantly to the trade balance, job creation and investments. Currently, the sector basically uses wood from two genus to produce pulp for the short fiber and long fiber segments, Eucalyptus and Pinus, respectively. However, it's essential to study new raw materials, which may arise as an alternative to those already consolidated. In this sense, the objective is to evaluate the properties of Liquidambar styraciflua wood for the pulp and paper production. For this, five 7-year-old trees were used, from which discs were extracted along the trunk to evaluate the basic density, chemical composition and morphology of the wood fibers. The mean and weighted basic density values obtained for L. styraciflua wood were 0.482 and 0.484 g/cm², respectively, which allowed classifying it as medium density, a value close to that of other hardwood species used for pulp production. Regarding the chemical composition, low levels of ash (0.29%) and lignin (24.71%) and high levels of holocellulose (70.88%) and extractives (4.40%) were observed. As for the morphological characterization of the fibers, the mean values of length of 1.82 mm, width of 27.84 µm, lumen diameter of 16.10 µm and wall thickness of 5.87 µm were observed. In addition, mean values of 42.60%, 57.40%, 0.77 and 65.22 were obtained for the parameters of wall fraction, flexibility coefficient, Runkel index and felting index, respectively. In general, based on the physical-chemical-anatomical characteristics obtained for the L. styraciflua wood, it's concluded that it has aptitude for the pulp and paper production. - Abstract
The process of continuously updating technologies, processes, and products has placed innovation at the center of the discussions of different institutions. Once the need to remain competitive, and beyond that, to be at the forefront of these modifications has become something necessary for the survival of organizations, the process of renewing project portfolios, as well as their management, is fundamental to tread the path towards innovation. Several methodologies are available to promote the generation of ideas and enhance the processes already underway. Among these, the Tecnology Roadmap (TRM) is an important tool for collecting ideas, helping in the process of strategic formulation, as well as in the definition of actions related to the planning of new products, processes and technologies. The use of the TRM methodology allowed a company in the metal-mechanic segment to delineate its project portfolio from the collection and prioritization of ideas in a collaborative way. Thus, the hot forming process was considered in 2019 as a process aligned to the company's strategic direction, being prioritized and incorporated to the project portfolio. From the use of test specimens with 22MnB5 hot forming steel with 8.00 mm thickness, through the analysis of cooling rate, microstructure, and microhardness, it was possible to verify satisfactory mechanical and metallurgical behavior, enabling the use of steel for commercial road vehicle structures. - Abstract
The existence of neutron stars was suggested soon after the discovery of such particles, and it soon became clear that Newtonian physics was innapropriate to study such stars. The problem was initially addressed by Richard C. Tolman, whose results were used by J. Robert Oppenheimer and George M. Volkoff for the deduction of what is known as Tolman-Oppenheimer-Volkoff (TOV) equation. This equation represents the hydrostatic equilibrium of a sphere of perfect fluid in the relativistic regime and, when combined with a suitable equation of state, yields a mathematical model for neutron stars. This paper presents the deduction of the TOV equation in a detailed and didactic way, since the treatment of Einstein's equations of general relativity (GR) until the application to the case where the star is made up of a Fermi gas of degenerate neutrons, whence we can deduce that there is a maximum mass possible for such objects. Although today we know that the Fermi gas model is by itself unsuitable in this case, the analysis is interesting from the historic and didactic viewpoint, once it consists in a fairly simple example of application of an equation of state to the calculations of the structure of neutron stars. VIOLENT deaths , *VIOLENCE , *PERIODICAL publishing , *VICTIMS , *RACISM - Abstract
This paper aims to understand how violent deaths suffered by common people and their media coverage are approached in the field of Communication, focusing on the sense-making processes about violence and its structural nature. In order to do so, we analysed papers about the media coverage around murders, published in 26 journals in the field of Communication, classified as A2 and B1 in the Brazilian "Qualis Capes" ranking. Based on the ways of identifying the victims and the circumstances of their deaths, in interaction with the ways of naming such violence, presented in the papers' empirical and analytical dimensions, we designed an overview of the silences and absences in the epistemic constructions about violence in media and academia in Brazil. Paper Kinship: Law, Power and Resistance in an Ethnographic Scene with Foreign Migrants starts from an "ethnographic scene" with foreign migrants in a lawyer's office to discuss the role that migratory documents play on kinship in the transnational movement. By doing this, it highlights how the state and the Law discipline these relations and how migrants themselves, using the legal logic of documentary production, elaborate themselves as persons, in resistance to state power. Based on this experience, named here as paper kinship, a reelaboration of the concept of document is proposed, encompassing both the bureaucratic agency and that of the subjects of documentation. YOUNG'S modulus , *STRAINS & stresses (Mechanics) , *DEFORMATIONS (Mechanics) , *HANDWRITING , *WRIST , *OPTICAL coherence tomography - Abstract
In this work, we present a methodology to assess wrist pressure during the handwriting process. Using optical coherence tomography, it was possible to determine the deformation suffered by the paper during the handwriting process. A calibration of the deformation suffered by the paper as a function of the pressure exerted by the pen was performed, making it possible to determine several parameters of interest, such as the radius of the pen tip sphere R = 488 ± 2 ¡im, the Poisson coefficient v = 0.30 ± 0.02 and the effective Young's modulus of bond paper 75 g/m2. To this end, we developed a method for determining the Hooke modulus for a spring, with which we built a device for applying a known force to a ballpoint pen during the handwriting process. We also performed the study depending on the type of substrate, with five volunteers trying to copy the same signature on four different types of paper. Using the optical coherence tomography technique, we demonstrate that it is possible to differentiate the authorship of a signature also by the depth of deformation on the paper. The experimental procedure also made it possible to determine the Poisson's coefficient and determine the effective Young's Modulus of the paper. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper aims to analyze a high-impact management article to understand the contribution of rhetoric in it. To this end, we selected the most cited study in research about TQM in 25 years, the article on strategy "The capabilities of market-driven organizations", by George S. Day (1994). To ground this analysis, a theoretical framework was developed mainly considering the rhetorical concepts of speaker, auditorium, agreement, and types of argument, as elaborated by Perelman and Olbrechts-Tyteca (2010). Finally, the results showed that Day used rhetorical tools - such as the arguments of example, authority and reciprocity - consistently throughout the article, thus increasing the adhesion to his thesis, which may have contributed to the success and repercussion achieved by the author. The Revista de la Universidad Técnica del Estado (1969–1973) was an academic periodical publication. Its aim was to disseminate the institution’s processes of transformation, which drew from the university reform movement. The periodical was immersed in the period of political transition, from the Christian democratic regime of Eduardo Frei Montalva to the socialist government programs of Salvador Allende. Its editorial production and printing processes were handled by the Universidad Técnica del Estado’s editorial department and graphic workshop, respectively—areas of the university whose work extended beyond institutional walls. This article aims to establish a dialogue between the publication and its political-educational context through reviewing a variety of topics, authors, and writing styles. Finally, it seeks to make visible the dynamics and experiences of the journal’s design work through analyzing visual production (covers and part-title pages) and the previously unpublished testimonials of the group of designers responsible for each issue. The text aims to analyze the territorialization of the capital in Alagoa's agrarian space through the expansion of the wood-paper-cellulose complex. During a long period the monoculture of sugar cane occupied the best lands of the State, however within the last few years in the face of the sugar-ethanol sector crisis, extensive hectares of land, once designed to grasses, have been set as ide space to Eucalyptus monoculture. The phenomenon is inserted as part of the globalized accumulation of capitals context, in which capitalist stake possession of lands between the tropics for the monoculture of commercial trees, combining the trade of commodities, and to the financial capital. It is assumed that the extraordinary soil and climatic conditions found in Alagoas and the support offered by the State act as an incentive to the partial replacement the sugar cane for eucalyptus. The underlyingcontradictionsregardingthephenomenonfollowingtheexampleoftheState'sfoodsover eigntyweakeningandofenvironmentalimpacts, also are objects in the present reflection. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

DIGITAL natives , *DISCOURSE , *POSSIBILITY - Abstract
The present study aims to analyze how the digital environment has influenced the production of a specific genre: the paper presentation in scientific events. Thus, based on a brief overview of studies around the notion of genre (Voloschinov, 1997; Adam, 2001; Adam and Heidman, 2011, Marcuschi, 2008), we seek to point out to what extent this genre maintains or not its characteristics in the face of technodiscursive affordances (Paveau, 2017) in the online production mode. For this, we started by analyzing three presentations made during the Linguistweets event, organized by ABRALIN, on Twitter. The analysis of the productions allowed us to trace a continuum of possibilities of appropriation of the technodiscursive potentialities afforded by the platform from two poles. One tends to maintain a more traditional model of this genre, and the other moves towards its updating. These emerge from the way the readwriters mobilize Twitter's technodiscursive affordances. Thus, we verify, on the one hand, the maintenance of certain characteristics of offline presentations and, on the other hand, the production of multi/delinearized presentations, marked by relationality, by enunciative augmentation, by more horizontal and symmetrical dynamics, which characterize, therefore, the digital native discourses. Investments in training and development programs are steadily increasing in organizations. Along with them, the concern of companies in analyzing the results of their programs grows. This study has the objective of building an evaluation model of training results, proposed for the Coil Finishing area of a Pulp and Paper company, using the Kirkpatrick methodology, which proposes the division of the evaluation into 4 levels, which are: Reaction, Learning, Behavior and Results. The final model is presented, and may guide other studies in the creation of their own models, however, indicators and data should be adapted to each organizational situation, considering their particularities. RELIGIOUS studies - Abstract
The paper analyzes the intellectual production of undergraduated students of the Degree course in Religious Studies at the University of the State of Pará, in particular that emerging from Course Conclusion Papers from 2004 to 2019. It investigates the privileged themes and the space Amazon religions occupy in these Papers. It results from a bibliographic research in the style of studies on the state of knowledge, whose objective is to analyze the intellectual production of a given area of knowledge, in this case Religious Studies. Theoretically, it is based on Candau's (2003) and Fleuri's (2006) ideas on interculturality, understood as a way to build a more democratic society that respects cultural diversity. Its conclusion is that most of these productions do not encompass the local religious diversity, the reason why it highlights the need for more research that focuses on the Amazon religions. - Abstract
Nowadays, organizations face strong competition, making it essential to look for new ways of operating in the market. One of the strategies they use to survive is to internationalize their businesses. Given its importance, the aim of this research was to draw up an overview of publications on internationalization on the Scopus scientific database, considering the time frame from January 2013 to December 2023. The research, which took a quantitative approach, searched for papers with the word "internationalization" in the title, abstract and keywords in the Scopus database using the RStudio, Bibliometrix and Biblioshiny tools. To this end, we opted for a study characterized as bibliometric research using data collected from the databases. At the end of the collection, the corpus of the research was 40 articles, including articles from national and international journals. It can be said that the topic needs more research due to its importance for organizations. It was also observed that most of the papers published in these databases are concentrated in Brazil and Colombia. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
This paper aims to analyze the impact of lockdown on education in the context of social acceleration. In this paper, we address the necessary (re)construction required to enhance the education of adolescents. From this perspective, it examines the potential of the adolescent brain, as advocated by Daniel Siegel. The present study employs a bibliographical research methodology to investigate the impact of social acceleration on education in the aftermath of the lockdown. We emphasize that the adolescent phase is crucial for the development of potentials in the educational context. In this vein, a philosophical analysis of the school is conducted, highlighting it as a space for (re)constructing practices that encourage adolescents to listen to the world around them. Therefore, the school must illuminate the potential of adolescence, such as creativity and openness to novelty, as a space for (re)creating subjects in times of acceleration. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
Purpose: This article aimed to analyze the effects of CPC 06 (R2) - Leases adoption on the rents line of the Value-Added Statement (VAS) and on the percentage of value-added distributed as rents. Methodology: The approach of this paper is quantitative, and the data collection method is documental. The sample is composed by merchants listed on B3. Analysis of variations and Wilcoxon signed-rank test were applied on the VAS rent line and on the percentage of valueadded distributed as rents of these companies in the three-year period after (2019-2021) and before (2016-2018) the CPC 06 (R2) adoption. Results: It was identified that, after the CPC 06 (R2) adoption, there was a significant reduction in the values of the VAS rent line and in the percentage of value-added distributed as rents of the sample companies. This occurred because companies have been allocating payments of the same economic nature (compensation to third parties for the use of their capital) in three different lines in the VAS, namely rent, depreciation and interest. The Wilcoxon signed-rank test indicated statistically significant differences in the average value of the VAS rents line and in the average percentage of value-added distributed as rents in the three-year period after the implementation of CPC 06 (R2) compared to the previous three-year period. Contributions of the Study: The paper contributes to the literature about leases and VAS, being pioneer in the analysis of the effects of leases on this statement after the CPC 06 (R2) adoption. It also helps users of accounting information to understand the effects of leases on the VAS and properly interpret the lines affected by CPC 06 (R2). Finally, it contributes to regulatory authorities, because indicates a potential need to revise the VAS standard. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

MODERNITY - Abstract
Starting from a movement of attraction and repulsion between the ideas of Mário de Andrade and Walter Benjamin on cinema, in this paper are presented simultaneities in the reflection of both authors on the new art. With this aim, it develops a reflected reading of Mario's essays of the 1920s, contrasting with the Benjaminian discussion of the following decade. Although conceptually about Art as Photography the author are not in agreement each other --about a new aesthetic sensitivity that is established in modernity where the image begins to place itself as an aesthetic foundation even in non-cinematographic--, Benjamin's analytical hypothesis may sustain a reading of a novel like Macunaíma, by Mario. Then, the paper discusses the tension in the Brazilian essayist and novelist Oeuvre, paying attention to how Art as Photography stands as power in its own aesthetics. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
Heart diseases are potentially fatal pathologies considered a risk factor for anxiety disorders. This paper aims to present a systematic literature review on anxiety in cardiology. Five databases were selected: SciElo, PsycINFO, Web of Science, and PubMed. The descriptors "cardiologia" and "ansiedade" and their equivalents in English, "anxiety" and "cardiology" were used. The inclusion criteria were papers published in Portuguese, English, or Spanish between 2017 and 2021. Twenty-six studies were selected, and four topics stood out: socio-demographic profile; anxiety and cardiac rehabilitation; anxiety-related risk and protective factors; and anxiety and depression. The results indicate that healthy anxiety levels play a protective role in promoting patient self-care. However, maladaptive anxiety levels hinder patients from coping with the disease. - Abstract
This article is a theoretical study arising from the umbrella research project, Psychoanalytic Investigation of Clinical Phenomena in Depression in the Context of COVID-19, by the Laboratory for the Investigation of Contemporary Psychopathologies (UFF. Volta Redonda Campus), in an inter-institutional partnership with the Graduate Program in Psychology at UFRJ. The aim of the research is to demarcate and define the effects of the contemporary mutation of the social bond on subjectivity, based on the recognition that humanitarian/sanitary emergencies are catastrophic for subjective functioning. In this paper, we will present the Freudian démarche that led us to recognize melancholization as the main impact of humanitarian/sanitary emergencies on subjective functioning. The paper recalls the use of the term catastrophe and its epistemological status within the framework of psychoanalysis. This term is fundamental to our research hypothesis: humanitarian/sanitary emergencies are a catastrophe because they produce the civilizational ruin of guarantees for the affected population and the suspension of the functioning of subjective defences and sublimatory strategies for dealing with the condition of helplessness. By considering humanitarian/sanitary emergencies as a catastrophe, the paper highlights, in the line of argument developed by Sigmund Freud, the emergence of the affect of despondency or melancholization as pathos in dark times of humanitarian/sanitary emergencies. - Abstract
The crisis of Fordism implemented in post-World War II Europe began to show its most explicit symptoms at the end of the 1960s, during a period of growing organizational strength among the working class. In the British case, the inflationary spiral and the low productivity of the economy began to have as a scapegoat the design of industrial relations in that country defined in the first decades of the 20th century. In this paper, we will analyse the first two attempts to get around the trade union issue in the period: the proposal for state control and interference by Labour based on the In Place of Strife bill at the end of the first Wilson government (1964- 1970) and the failure of the attempt at judicialization and control contained in the Industrial Relations Act by the Conservatives led by Edward Heath in 1972. In common, the attempt by the British ruling classes, through the state and the law, to bend the organized power of labor. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this paper we present a categorization of autonomies implemented by indigenous and peasant movements in Latin America into three types: a) juridical versus de facto autonomies; b) explicit versus implicit autonomies; and c) (mono)ethnic versus popular or class-based autonomies. We argue that the debate concerning these different conceptions is of strategic importance both in the dialogue between indigenous and peasant struggles for the defense of territories, and in the question of peasant autonomy, understood as a strategy of struggle. - Abstract
The present paper aims at analyzing the polysemy of the Darwinian concept of adaptation in High School Biology textbooks approved in the 2015 Brazilian National Textbook Program. As a theoretical-methodological tool, we used a semantic matrix containing systematized ontological and epistemological dimensions that provided the bases for the proposition of zones in a Conceptual Profile model of the adaptation concept. The analyses showed that the frequent use of the concept of adaptation in addressing contents from Zoology, Botany, Paleontology, and Physiology reinforced the integrative and central role of Evolution in school discourse. A utilitarian notion of adaptation as a state of being or to refer to characteristics of living beings prevailed among the recording units, in which functionality showed up as a sufficient condition to define them as adaptations, independently of their origin by natural selection. This way of presenting adaptations can lead the students to relegate the role of natural selection in their explanation to a second plane, or even to neglect it entirely, or to an understanding of it as a natural process that necessarily acts to produce characteristics appropriate to the current conditions of the environment. Several approaches involving the concept of adaptation emphasized the notions of goal and purpose, from a teleological perspective. The recurrent use of such teleological explanations may be associated with the fact that this way of thinking is rather common in cognitive activities, such that its use might be justified by the expectation that a language based on it might have heuristic value in the students' conceptual evolution. Nevertheless, there is a necessity of grounding these explanations properly, from an evolutionary and/or organizational approach to living systems, such that modes of thinking incompatible with scientific understanding in contemporary biology are not promoted. This brings about difficulties that are potentially hard to confront in high school, especially if we consider the general absence in teacher education of an appropriate grounding of valid teleological explanations under the light of contemporary biological thinking. - Abstract
The paper intertwines the Hobbesian curriculum elements presented at Leviathan's chapter XXX with Natural Laws described in chapters XIV and XV. The analysis was divided in 4 phases: 1) listing chapter XXX educational contents; 2) finding Natural Laws aspects which were potential equivalents to the content listed; 3) comparing pertinent arguments and theoretical points to those correspondences; 4) emphasizing interpretative insights that resulted from the analytical comparison. Such methodological approach justifies the few references to texts other than Leviathan. Amongst the findings, the paper underlines that all curriculum elements could be articulated with, at least, one Natural Law, being the third law the most frequent. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

INVESTIGATIVE reporting , *JOURNALISM - Abstract
This paper resorts to a literature review to cover 100 years of investigative journalism history, focusing on the concept by choosing journalistic investigation as the prime embodiment of high-quality journalism, providing a broad perspective on the topic. Resuming the debate on the differences between investigative journalism and day-to-day journalism, which still creates rifts among the journalistic class, but also within academia, this article dismisses the all-encompassing view that all journalism is investigative. By assessing the impact of external factors, such as the market and technology, on the matrix of the investigative journalism concept, this analysis seeks to identify potential solutions that can sustain the watchdog role associated with investigative journalism. As such, this paper delves into the new frontiers of investigative journalism, simultaneously highlighting the potential of digital technology to keep powers under scrutiny in an increasingly complex world; create collaborative networks among journalists that expand the scope and enhance the impact of published stories; foster partnerships between media organisations, nonprofit organisations and universities; and find long overdue solutions to ensure that investigative journalism reaches peripheral territories, where it still has an utterly marginal presence. - Abstract
This paper presents a theoretical reflection on the fundamentals of using financial profitability as a performance indicator and on the contribution of state-owned enterprises to social wellbeing. In specific terms, it is intended to provide greater familiarity with academic discussions on the subject, to understand the limitations of transposing performance metrics of enterprises that pursue the greatest possible financial return for their shareholders, in measuring the performance of state-owned enterprises that in addition to pursuing economic objectives, they also pursue social, political and even national security objectives. The central question of the research is: does greater financial profitability reflect a good performance and contribution of state-owned enterprises to social well-being? In the search for the answer to the research question, a qualitative study was carried out through technical procedures of bibliographic research with a focus on critical content analysis. The conclusion of the research is that a high financial return does not always represent an efficient use of public resources and, therefore, a good performance of state-owned enterprises. Government policies, including those on setting and reviewing prices, the monopolistic nature in which some public companies operate can camouflage operational inefficiencies by companies, with high economic and social costs that are borne by the citizen. JOB stress , *PSYCHOLOGICAL stress , *POLICE - Abstract
This paper aimed to map the studies published in journals on occupational stress in the Brazilian public security forces in the period between 2018 - 2023, highlighting the stressors, the consequences of stress and the actions taken to prevent it. For this purpose, a bibliometric and systematic review was carried out, using the ProKnow-C method, considering the articles published in the Spell and Scielo databases of the studied period. The results demonstrated the concentration of studies published in the South, Southeast and Midwest regions. The main stressors identified were pressure, high workload, accumulation of functions, low pay, lack of autonomy, discrimination and favoritism in the workplace. The consequences of stress include physical and psychological impairment, reduced quality of life and burnout. Some of the preventive actions are increasing rest time between shifts and psychological monitoring and treatment. Despite the results, it is concluded that stress in public security forces is still little investigated in Brazil, both by academia and by the police institutions themselves. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
In this paper, I present the results of ethnographic research that analyzes the social effects on peasant communities (dedicated to working the land and fishing in the river) due to the delivery of compensation and the carrying out of works for the installation of the hydroelectric dam "El Quimbo", located in the inter-Andean valleys of the Upper Magdalena River basin, in Huila, Colombia. Those lands were flooded in 2015, and affected people received different treatments that changed their relationships with the land, the river and their communities. Thus, the theoretical contribution of the article lies in the dialogue between ecological economics and economic anthropology, hence I describe the effects of restricting to a value paid in cash or measured in productivity regarding the social value of the elements present in the territory (land, river, forest) and community relations. Methodologically, six standard-situations were constructed inductively based on interviews and conversations collected in fieldwork that covered various moments between 2010 and 2021. The six standard-situations evince the effects on the social positions of affected groups: some partially reproduced their relations with the land; some began a situation of new subordination; and others were expropriated from the reproduction of their previous social relations. I complemented the article with secondary sources based on a review of archives, newspapers, and public documents of the company and the social movement. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

SEXUALLY transmitted diseases , *CANCER in dogs , *TUMORS , *CANCER chemotherapy , *ULTRASONIC imaging - Abstract
Background: Transmissible venereal tumour (TVT), also called Sticker Tumour, is a round cell tumour whose transmission occurs mainly through sexual contact between animals or direct transplantation of the neoplastic cell through licking or through direct contact with the lesioned area. TVT is the most common tumor found in stray dogs and predominantly affects the genital area and, in case of bitches, occurs in the vagina and foreskin, as well as the oral and nasal cavities. Intracavitary TVT is rarely reported. The aim of this paper is to report a case of an old neutered bitch affected by vaginal and intracavitary TVT, treated at the Veterinary School Clinic (CVE) of the Federal University of Santa Catarina (UFSC), Curitibanos campus, Brazil. Case: An approximately 10-year-old mixed breed bitch, weighing 18,5 kg and, neutered 2 years previously at the same institution, was brought by her owner, who reported dyskinesia, constipation, and serosanguinous vaginal discharge for a few weeks. Physical examination showed a row of 4 smooth, round masses with a soft consistency ranging from 1 to 2 cm at the bottom of the vaginal roof. The patient was referred for an ultrasound (US) and a vaginal swab was taken for cytological examination, whose result demonstrated TVT. The result of the US scan showed a heterogeneously shaped structure, with a more hypoechogenic center in relation to the periphery and irregular contours, measuring around 2.63 x 6.10 cm, in the uterine topography caudally to the bladder. Exploratory laparotomy was performed with total removal of the mass, which was surrounding the proximal urethra, and the material was sent for histological and cytological analysis, whose both results indicated TVT. Chemotherapy was then initiated, with 6 intravenous administrations of vincristine (0.5 mg/m2) with an interval of 15 days between each administration. The animal underwent a total of 6 chemotherapy sessions, without complete improvement of the vaginal tumours. A 2nd chemotherapy protocol based on doxorubicin was suggested, which was not accepted by the owner. Three months after the end of the original chemotherapy protocol, the patient was assessed again and it was found that there had been no progression of the vaginal masses on vaginal palpation and no signs of recurrence of the intracavitary mass on ultrasound. Discussion: TVT is a venereal tumor that affects almost 100% of non-neutered animals, males and females. In the case of bitches, the most common sites are the vagina (53%), vulva (13%) and extragenital areas (14%). This animal had no intracavitary mass at the time of her castration 2 years earlier. At the time of diagnosis, she had the extragenital form of the tumor, consisting of an intra-abdominal mass, in addition to the genital masses in the vaginal roof. The chemotherapy drug vincristine is the drug of choice for the treatment of transmissible venereal tumors, due to its high efficacy associated with 4 to 6 sessions. However, in this case, there was no total improvement, so it was classified as a case of proven pharmacological resistance as the chemotherapy was ineffective for the complete regression of the tumor. It was therefore concluded that the occurrence of intracavitary TVTs, although rare, warrants a thorough physical examination combined with diagnostic tools such as ultrasound and histology, even in castrated old patients. PATELLA fractures , *CATS , *INTERNAL fixation in fractures , *ORTHOPEDICS , *RADIOGRAPHY - Abstract
Background: Longitudinal patellar fractures are uncommon in veterinary orthopedics routine. These fractures directly affect pelvic limb movements and can result in joint incongruity and potentially degenerative joint disease. Surgical repair is necessary to preserve the quadriceps extensor mechanism and reduce possible complications. This paper describes the clinical status of a cat suffering from a longitudinal patellar fracture, the surgical procedure used to repair and stabilize the bone, and the postoperative outcomes during the animal's different healing phases. Case: One cat with a longitudinal patellar fracture of the left pelvic limb was treated at the Veterinary Hospital of the Federal University of Santa Maria (UFSM), in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. The patient was diagnosed based on physical and radiographic examinations of the affected pelvic limb. Under anesthesia, the patella was subjected to osteosynthesis using cerclage wire and to trochlear sulcoplasty to prevent luxation. The veterinarian recommended postoperative rest and basic care involving hygiene of the surgical wound. After 60 days, the cat was brought back to the hospital for radiographic reassessment to verify the osseous consolidation of the patella. The X-ray exam revealed non-consolidation of the bone fragments, despite the cemented implant and the proper joining of the fragments. However, although the fracture did not consolidate, the animal exhibited clinical improvement of its lameness. Discussion: Longitudinal fractures are rare and the literature contains few reports about them. It is believed that cats are more likely to present longitudinal fractures after direct blows that cause compression of the patella over the trochlear groove, since the patella in this species is relatively wider and smoother than that of dogs. The literature still lacks a clear description of the causal mechanism of longitudinal fractures; however, but the main causes may vary according to the clinical presentation. The choice of the best method to treat patellar fractures still poses a challenge, since several methods have been described, depending on how the fracture presents. Regardless of the choice of treatment, the techniques for surgical repair of patellar fractures must involve the following steps: the fracture must be reduced, the fragments kept in apposition until the fracture closes, the soft tissues are healed, and the knee function restored. The cat's patellar fracture was repaired with cerclage wire to restore its anatomical normality, reducing the fracture and stabilizing the bone fragments in order to immobilize them and ensure proper better bone healing. Maintenance and approximation of the lateral fragment of the longitudinal fracture, in conjunction with sulcoplasty, were proposed to ensure greater contact between the patella and the trochlear groove, thereby reducing the possibility of luxation. Despite the non-consolidation of the fracture, the fragment remained intact and immobile, and no post-surgical complications were reported. This confirmed the success of the technique employed to bring together the patellar fragments of the lateral longitudinal fracture, even in the absence of bone callus formation. Moreover, the technique proved to be simple and resulted in complete joint stability after 60 days. This is therefore an important tool for patellar fractures, whose lateral longitudinal fragment was retained, allowing for correct approximation and fragment immobilization, without the need for excision by partial patellectomy. - Abstract
Strategic environmental assessment (EAE) is a tool that allows the approach of territorial and environmental issues from the perspective of strategic planning and whose incidence is given in policies, projects, plans or programs. A transcendental aspect within the EAE is that it should seek the participation of diverse social and institutional actors, given the impact that some indicators can generate. Therefore, the objective of this paper is to present some challenges and contributions for the approach to participation based on the experience of the EAE for the World Heritage Site Cordillera de Talamanca Reserves - La Amistad International Park (Costa Rica) developed by ProDUS-UCR in 2021. This process was carried out through two modalities: virtual and face-to-face, in which techniques such as surveys, telephone interviews, virtual meetings and workshops were used to generate spaces for discussion, validation and proposal generation from a participatory perspective. During the research, it was seen how contemplating cultural, ethnic, age and gender aspects allows to encourage even more participation, especially when this within the SEA is of utmost importance since it allows this and similar processes to be more in line with the needs of the population and place, there is an even greater appropriation process, the proposals are better contextualized and the population becomes an active agent and generator of proposals for its own environment. - Abstract
Advances in the past few decades have led to a radical transformation in how healthcare systems, communities, and individuals approach the concepts of well-being, health, and disease. Today, it is possible to access an infinite amount of data with the potential to diagnose, predict, prevent, and personalize disease treatment. The digital transformation generates a huge demand for the development and management of health information systems. At the same time, effective communication of medical information is one of the critical points for the person-centred care approach, to generate value and reduce waste. In the face of complex social challenges, interprofessional collaboration between design and health is already seen as indispensable. With the aim of contributing to the debate on information design for health in Brazil, this paper presents an overview of the area, discusses the current challenges of the health sector and the synergies with information design. It concludes that participatory approaches, performance evaluations and a greater link between information design and service design are important for the creation of more sustainable collaboration strategies between the areas, to increase the social impact of design research in Brazil. This paper addresses the theme of communications between the province of Mato Grosso and the Atlantic through the territory of the province of Paraná, using as sources, preferably, the reports of the presidents of the two provinces, and having as a background the concerns of the Brazilian national state due to the remote and border condition of Mato Grosso. It is shown that the routes sought were initially terrestrial-fluvial and, later, rail-fluvial, and that the leaders of Paraná had a greater interest in such communications than their counterparts in Mato Grosso. In addition to envisioning the possibility of Paraná becoming the "emporium" of Mato Grosso commerce, those leaders also sought the benefits brought to their province by the central government's investments in roads to Mato Grosso. URBAN planning - Abstract
This paper aims to estimate the scale and shape parameters of the Weibull Probability Density Function (PDF) to analyze the wind distribution in the city of Macaé, RJ. The wind study covered the meteorological stations in the following locations: Glória, Estrada de Morro Grande, Miramar, Mirante da Lagoa, Parque Aeroporto, and Trapiche, considering different seasons of the year from autumn 2021 to summer 2022. After performing statistical analyses on the databases, the coefficients of the PDF were optimized to better fit the histograms columns, plotted individually for each region. Additionally, the research evaluated the seasonal behavior of each area. As a result, it was inferred which urban applications of wind resource exploitation can be recommended for each locality, based, among other factors, on the estimated wind power developed for an average wind turbine. CITIES & towns , *OLDER people , *MEMORY - Abstract
This paper analyzes the representations of memory about the city of Picos-PI, in the 1980s and 1990s. It focuses the discussions on the issue of work, as well as on the spaces of sociability and leisure in the city. It is based on oral sources, with reports of elderly residents of the city and bibliographic studies on the history of the city. It makes use of the methodology of Oral History, where the analysis of the data obtained in the interviews was carried out through the crossing and interpretation of the convergent information, mentioned by the interviewees, with a view to achieving the objectives established for this research. The theoretical reflections on the concepts of city, work, elderly and memory are based on dialogue, respectively, with Pesavento (2007), Silva (2006), Camarano (2004) and Bosi (2006), among others. The work pointed out several aspects of work in the 1980s and 1990s, as well as the main places of sociability and leisure in the city. He also highlighted the continuation of the work in the "third age" as a contribution to active and healthy aging, enriching the collective experience of the city and strengthening social ties. - Abstract
In the context of recent educational reforms, the resolution CNE/CP 02/2019 was promulgated, defining the National Curricular Guidelines for Teacher Education, replacing the old Guidelines (Resolution CNE/CP 02/2015), and requiring Higher Education Institutions to reformulate the pedagogical projects of undergraduate courses. The present paper seeks to trace a comparative analysis between the two guidelines, understanding the social, economic and political contexts of their implementation, exposing their similarities and differences, as well as the possible consequences of the modification in the training profile of new teachers. The study carried out here points out that, in general, the current guidelines are more prescriptive and standardizing in relation to their predecessors, besides not bringing elements about continuing education and not talking much about the issue of professional development of teachers. Considering such characteristics and the undemocratic context of its implementation, the current resolution can be seen as a step backwards in Brazilian public educational policies. - Abstract
This conceptual and reflective paper begins by emphasising that the assessment of suicide risk requires theoretical knowledge in suicidology, and that suicidal behaviour is not a linear phenomenon. Next, the concept of unacceptable loss thresholds is discussed. The following topic highlights the need for an adequate education and training for psychologists, given the difficulty in assessing risk, and discusses the alert signs for suicidal behaviour. The following one focuses specifically on clinical risk assessment situations, emphasizing that suicidal ideation and risk are extremely volatile, so the assessment should not be done at an isolated moment in time. Various types of suicide risk assessment instruments are then analysed: assessment scales, checklists and risk indicators, as well as self-report instruments. Then we refer to the scarcity of this type of instrument in Portugal and describe some instruments available in our country. Finally, a dichotomy is discussed: implicit/indirect methods versus direct/self-report methods and a brief clinical note is presented. It is concluded that it is useful to use several types of methods, but also that a “strict” assessment of risk factors is insufficient and that risk assessment should be carried out at several levels. Purpose: Are men more inclined to assume risks than women? The answer to this question is immediately relevant to various economic issues, including human behavior concerning medical remedies and procedures consumption. This paper aims to identify the perceived benefits of the consumption of medications centered on pharmaceutical risk assessment. Originality/value: The literature documents that risks and benefits can be considered the main trade-offs in consumer decision-making, including the pharmaceutical industry. It is a current theme with a high potential for social impact due to the many identified cases of Covid-19. In developing countries, most medication is used by self-medicating individuals, as access to health care can be insufficient. Self-medication is a potentially greater problem, as in this case, medication usage often follows advice from friends, relatives, and neighbors. Yet, there is little empirical evidence regarding this problem in the context of emerging countries. Design/methodology/approach: A survey of over 1,000 subjects using an extended regression model (ERM) in one of the biggest countries in the world, Brazil. Findings: The results reported that women perceive more risks and benefits from medication usage and medical procedures. The perception of the benefits of medications can be explained by the following dimensions: risk (personal injury, risk alertness, and risk awareness), gender, regular usage, and the benefits of medical procedures. Regarding risk dimensions, the lower the perceptions of personal injury and the higher the perceptions of risk alertness and risk awareness, the greater the perceived benefits of medication usage.
