Based on the fact that is from educational institutions that emerge the leaders of the future and, as well, examples of the impact that sustainable attitudes can bring, this study suggests that schools of most different kind adopt the in their structures an index dedicated to measuring environmental sustainability and encourage the practice of sustainability. For the composition of this index were adopted six indicators: Energy Consumption; Water Consumption; Fuel Consumption; Level of Awareness in the Use of Office Paper; Quality Waste Disposal; Environmental and Social Responsibility. The proposed methodology was tested and evaluated in a test pilot at campus Maracanã of CEFET / RJ, with base year 2012. The Socio Environmental Sustainability Index, which considers the possible inequalities as distinct indicators, reported performance of 32.3% (or 0.32), indicating that much remains to be done in the field of sustainability in the institution. It is expected that educational institutions as CEFET / RJ adopt the practice of measuring their efforts in this field, making increasingly robust assessment tools like this that is presented in this article, which integrates the dimensions of sustainability - environmental, economic and social - with the triad of education - teaching, research and extension.
